Zhang Jiaohua, just another ordinary Post-80, with no speciality compared to his peers. Same food, diet and play, acting like a spoiled child towards his parents, towards his Grandpa and Grandma like a Tyrant, getting into fights and scuffles with village brats, stealing one mao from parents to go buy a popsicle, picking grapes to eat from the grapevine in Zhang Jiujin’s house, going to the mountains to fish out birds nest…….just the same, just the same, there was nothing unusual in any way.

At the age of six years he experienced an unusual event, that completely changed his life path.

Great Dao is Life, Life is Great Dao.

Good story of pre-modernized rural China, with a bit of daoism & cultivation as the *background*. Story of 7 yo boy who was born in the poorest rural village where rice grain is sold 3 cents a pound. The story ultra-slowly told his life, along with atmosphere of '80 (which like USA/EU of 1940 era!).

Everything evolved around the small village which has no electric, just kerosene lamp and candle, no plumbing water but only running stream. Most luxury entertaining item is 14-inch black&white TV. Very nostralgic.

Not only MC's life, but tens of village people life too. Do not expect the flying sword, or mountain-destroying qi. Just the slow life of the people, children, dogs, farmers, aunts, uncles, friends, teacher. Day after day, night after night. Life in the clean and pure village revealed itself to your mind.

If you love Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series, this novel is for you. If you never read them, should think carefully before click the first chapter.

BTW, this story is written better than the author's previous one.

UPDATE : So sad. Have to reduce the rating.
Spoiler

Seem that the author can't escape from the 'writer block syndrome'. The later chapters become boring and boring and boring. Not 'dao' or 'cultivation' anymore but ordinary novel about tea business. That's reason why I stop reading at ch.335th.

I really like the previous novel by the author My Daoist Life. This one seems to be just as good. Reading about the rural life in China in the 80s and adding martial arts cultivation is a bit surreal but it just works. It has the feel of magic realism that I usually only find in western novels or Japanese novels like Demon Child by Fuyumi Ono.

Another excellent novel by the author of "My Daoist Life". Just like author's previous work, this story is set in modern world (80s) and it takes realistic take on the society when a child is influenced by the supernatural. If you are tired of usual xianxia/xuanhuan than you should give this novel a try ^^

An immortal journey begins from a mortal dream.

The novel is well-written, the story progress is steady, even the cliches are well-integrated. One of the best representatives of the xianxia genre in modern settings with a bit of supernatural/ghost fighting, poor-to-rich, cooking and science fiction.

P.S.: No harem, which covers all the novel's blandness for me.

It's a fun slice-of-life with a little bit of face-slapping, some farming, some magic. This genre is usually dominated by spunky time-traveling women but in this case the MC is a little boy, so it's a nice change.

The only downside for me so far is that at times the MC is rather OP. With the help of his magic he farms way better on his first try than veterans of many years, so there's no struggle or interest in it. It ends up being that the farming aspect of the... more>> story is kind of boring compared to the magic aspect. <<less
