One day an unknown suffocating feeling leads Hagil to run away from home in the midst of studying. Sitting on a bench in Bupyeong with nowhere to go, Hagil meets eyes with Junhyung. Not wanting to return home, he takes on Junhyung’s offer and goes home with the other.

Junhyung calls him “Happy” and Junhyung’s family members also accept him as such. Due to Junhyung unusually taking care of him and even introducing him to his friends as his pet, Hagil realizes that something is weird.

Honestly, this is one of the worst MC's I've ever read about. It's crazy how often he runs from his problems, at some point you start to think he deserves some of it becomes they're so easily resolvable.

In summary,

MC runs from home because he feels suffocated that his mom does everything for him and has that only-son-raised-by-a-single-mom pressure.

[collapse]

Honestly not a great reason to run away from home a ruin your life for. If he was being abused or neglected, I can understand but the basis of his whole 'running away' is nothing short of bizarre. I feel like everything that happens with his mom is mostlhis fault... Like, if you have a problem with your family... You talk to them right? Or try to make the situation better? You wouldn't just run away and make the people you love worry.

He then gets picked up and treated as a pet by ML, who is

austistic

And since his family wants ML to get better from his condition, they take MC in, no questions asked. MC over thinks a lot about various issues during this time and starts to fall for ML.
Spoiler

the more he falls for ML, the more he feels upset about being treated as a pet. Then, even though the family and ML treats him kindly and likes him, he runs away again. He's naive enough to think everything will be better when he gets home but learns his mother died in an accident looking for him. It's even worse when you think about how someone tried to tell him about his mom's death but he didn't want to hear about it; he ran away, not even knowing that he missed his mom's funeral

[collapse]

The MC's avoidence with reality is probably the biggest issue in this entire story. It plays out like a tragedy because every problem MC has can be fixed or made a little better if he actually did something about it or said something about it but he doesn't. He over thinks it a lot and decides to run away, making the situations worse and worse.

On the plus side, the writing isn't bad and it has a feeling like I'm in a hazy storybook where everything is a little vague and dreamy. Maybe the aurhor's writing is supposed to associate you with MC's disassociation problems. Another note: I love Sangryeol. He is literally the only character here that tries to pull MC's life together and get him to face his problems without being insensitive.

MC's mom did just die afteral

He's lonely and kind and tries to offer MC his home and money when he saw how depressed MC was. It didn't seem like he liked MC though... He just saw a person as lonely as himself and wanted conpany. I honestly wished he was the actual ML near the end of this story but of course, I can't have that. <<less

Five star for angst.

The MC did a lot of things I wouldn't. And if went through the same things he went through, I'll probably be filled with regret that I will not be able to live with.

Still, I liked it because it made me cry. Even though the MC is always running away, it's just how he is. And when he decided to not run away, harsh reality faced him. I think it was well deserved. It was a beautiful plot instrument. But I hoped that it would turn out... more>> better for him.

Spoiler

The MLs family is selfish, prioritizing their own fanily's happiness. It was understandable. You will know where they are coming from and it was well explained.

It's just a pity because I wanted them to be more concerned of the MC's personal happiness too.

I think, the story is lacking in clarity as to what drives other side characters. The MC is a lost teenager and made mistakes. He's lost and wants to escape. In the process of escaping reality, he found happiness and at the same time became even more lost. Then found himself again, prioritizing himself. I liked that. That was my favorite part, facing reality. It takes a lot of courage, especially for the MC who is cowardly.

[collapse]

The piece was beautifully written. I don't like any of the characters in this story, except from the MCs mom. But because it's beautifully written, I gave it a five. <<less

It should have been two stars, my hand slipped.

Now about the story. It was strange... Many people like this story, well, I might have liked it too, but instead I feel so much disdain towards the MC and the ML’s family.

Well... He ran away. Not because he was mentally and physically abused. No! But because it was unbearable for him to cope with the pressure of... of what? Too much studying? No! - Too much his mom’s love, too much her sacrifice. It suffocated him and he wanted to escape the reality. How selfish could a person be?! He thinks and cares only about himself. Not even ONCE for a very long period of time he remembered his mom. Not even once (while perfectly knowing how much she cares for him) he took a thought about her condition when he escaped without a warning.

And the family... Despite the reason why they welcome the MC, how it was possible for adults (ml’s mom and dad, elder sister) never once thought that it is wrong! Someone else’s child (MC looks the same age as their son, or even younger) appears in their home. They don’t ask ANITHING! They have their own children but they don’t care that somewhere there could be parents who are searching for their son who had escaped...

It would be much better and acceptable if the author made him an orphan living with relatives, or made his mom a disposable woman, or... Any case would be better. Because it is impossible to emphasize with such a selfish, egoistic character.

[collapse]

I am not against dark stories but I can’t stand despicable characters. <<less

MTL'd after chapter 25 or so (well-done translation from Miri). A mellow, slow-paced coming-of-age story with interesting psychological twists that explores themes of family, love, and mental disorder.

The description is spot-on. Both the MC and ML have stuff going on in their heads: MC appears to be depressed, and ML appears to be on the spectrum. Through their interactions with each other, they become stronger and better people. There's light smut later in the story. The author is very good at creating tension and teasing out plot hints (some scenes... more>> are really weird), but it's all more or less resolved neatly so don't let those scenes give you pause and keep reading. It's a HE!

Despite the two living in a supportive environment, the MC and ML still bump up against cultural issues for which there are no insta-fixes. While it's rapidly changing and evolving, South Korean society is notoriously ill-equipped at handling mental health, homosexuality, bullying, class differences (rich versus poor) — and on top of that, they're two high-school students in a highly competitive system.

While at times the story is pretty melancholy because of those topics, it's very much a heart-warming story. For such a short story, the side characters have a lot of life. In particular, ML's family was great: while they're imperfect, their love for each other is cavity-inducing. ML's friend group is also funny. <<less

Interesting, only three chapters in, need to wait a little longer before finalizing my judgement of the story. However, the translation is good, the editing is good, and the story isn't slow but rather moving along at an acceptable pace. It is only at 3 chapters, so too early to give it bad ratings. Though the chapters are short, thats nothing new with light novels.

Over all it was interesting enough for me to finish the novel, but honestly I just can’t sympathize with MC bc of what he put his mother through. It was kind of weird with the whole Happy pet thing. ... more>>
Spoiler

My heart breaks for his poor mother. At the beginning I was wondering what is so bad at home that he had to run away? But after learning that he ran away because he felt too suffocated due to his mother’s loves and sacrifice for him, I was so bothered! His mother worked so hard as a single mom and to think that her last day on earth was stressing and worrying about her son... errrr What bother me even more is even after he learned of her death, his main concern was ML. Dude!!! You ungrateful son, go pay respect to you mother!

[collapse]
Hence it’s only a 3/5. I think I would of like it better if he ran away because of something else. <<less

it was so sad that MC’s mother died while looking for him, it showed how important communication is, how important family is

i feel so bad when MC left his place, whether its because he fell in love w/ MC or because he felt a certain camaraderie with the MC, he grew attached to the MC still and it was so said when he said “dont go” I really wish he was included in the epilogue or an extra because he deserves closure!!!

[collapse]

I can’t say that I like the MC cause most of the problems spring from his lack of communication but that’s how real world people are <<less

A story I would definetly recommend. Throughout the story you could feel something brew while everything happened. It made me emotional and got me to accidentally cry and the later chapters.

Recently picked up the translations for this. It’s a somewhat somber story about a boy who picks up another boy to replace his pet. It’s kind of weird, a little depressing, but not a bad read.
