The year is 2013, and it’s the city of No. 6: a stringently controlled, diligently maintained megalopolis that embodies the highest ideals of humankind. Sion has lived under close supervision as a “high-ranking elite and therefore one of the city’s assets” since the age of two, and feels secure – if not particularly happy – in his carefully planned out, government-sponsored future.

On the night of his twelfth birthday, his comfortable lifestyle is turned upside-down when he meets, tends the wounds of, and shelters, a strange boy with an icy demeanour who calls himself “Nezumi” (Rat).

Why did I open the window that night? If I had not, I’d never have been forced to know what it’s like to fight, to starve, and to suffer in anguish…

  1. So good. The dynamic between the main characters is great. The story sucks you in and you wont want to stop. It doesn't seem like so much of a romance, more of a need or addiction to each other. Yet throughout the story they only kiss twice. Focuses on a "utopia" city in the future where humans have destroyed everything else. Reminds me of books like the giver, hunger games... so forth. Story is well thought out and I highly recommend it!
The only thing I wish is that there was more... more>> of an epilogue, or what happens next... but that's okay. Leave it to the readers imagination <<less

The story that converted me to BL. Completely fell in love with the characters and down the rabbit hole I went.

If you're not sure you'll like it or if reading the entire novel series seems like too much work, check out the manga or anime for a less pressured glimpse of the story!

This is a novel that absolutely destroyed me (emotionally) when I read it - and that was more than 7 years ago, when I've just started university. Perhaps I'd handle it differently now if I were to read it again.

Needless to say, the novel and its plot are really good and well thought out. It pretty much revolves about seemingly utopian city that hides some dark secrets. I absolutely fell in love with the characters; they are so well written and dynamics between two main characters (Nezumi and Shion) is... more>> just amazing. There are 9 volumes, so you have a lot of time to really look into their heart and understand why they are the way they are. The character development is present, as they are both different at the end of the novel from how they were at the beginning.

This novel is so dear to me and I love it to bits, but I gotta say this: usually, when I like a novel, I tend to come back to reread it (and I do it often). But No.6 is one novel I loved that I've read only once! I experienced my first huge post-book depression after reading it (I was young though, so have that in mind) and I wasn't able to shrug it off for quite a long time. And to this day, I still clearly remember the plot, the characters and the scenes, the dialogues - and my poor reader's heart STILL aches just when I think about it. Though not as much as it did during the first 2 years (XD) after I read it. I know it sounds dramatic as heck, but more than 7 years later, I still didn't get over it enough to be able to reread it.

The novel doesn't have a sad ending, but it ends with a promise - or, well, actually more than one promise.

First is Nezumi's promise to Shion,

Spoiler

Nezumi leaves, but he promises Shion that they will reunite again. "Reunion will come, Shion."

[collapse]

And then there's Shion's promise,

Spoiler

He promises to Nezumi that he will be different from previous leaders of No. 6 and that he won't become corrupted. Shion was always exceptionally smart, but he never used his intelligence to hurt others, nor tried to take advantage of others in any way. He promises that he'll always stay true to himself

[collapse]

And the reader has no other option but to believe that promise. The ending kinda leaves you hoping so badly for the promises to be fulfilled - just to see them fulfilled - but, well, we never get to see it. We have no option but to believe in our characters.

"No. 6: Beyond" contains some bonus stories from the main novel, as well as a sort of epilogue - a bit about what happens after the ending of No. 6.

Now, if you think this bonus chapters from Beyond will give you any comfort - it won't, on the contrary. As a reader who loves this novel, I honestly wish the author didn't write "No. 6: Beyond", lol. I wanted closure, not to be torn apart even more.

Like, bonus stories are cute as heck, but they contain some chapters that make you really, really think and question how the things would turn out realistically in the story.

If you want to know, here's the spoiler (related to both Nezumi and Shion's promises at the end of No. 6 and what happens afterwards) :

Spoiler

Nezumi goes on a journey of discovering himself and who he really is underneath that boy that was consumed with revenge, because revenge is all he's ever known. In order to do that, he needs to get away from everything that connects him to his past. On his journey, he meets Shion's father (who abandoned his family when Shion was a kid). He's on his way to No. 6, because he heard there's a new ruler (his son Shion). In short, during their interaction, Shion's father tells Nezumi that every ruler will eventually become corrupted, or otherwise, he won't survive in that position for too long. After the interaction (and deciding not to kill Shion's father), Nezumi considers turning back and going back to Shion, because he's worried. But at the end, he decides to continue forward, believe in Shion and his promise, and leave the past behind him - and he says, that Shion is his past too.

Meanwhile, inside of No. 6, Shion ends up setting a trap to catch a bad guy. It was for a good cause and because he had no other option - but he has used his position as a leader in a way that he shouldn't have, and the way he used it (he sort of "fabricated" proof against the guy to get rid of him, but the dude wasn't innocent either and was plotting against Shion) is unlike Shion, because Shion was always honest and faced others directly, in a very naive and pure-hearted way, and has never used such sneaky way to achieve anything. And now he's torn because of the way he had to deal with the situation. During a storm, he opens the windows and calls for Nezumi, just like he did when they met for the first time. But Nezumi doesn't come and Shion closes the window, filled with desperation because he wants to see him so badly. He still remains there, in charge of No. 6, because that's what he promised Nezumi, and he'll always wait for his return.

[collapse]

Nezumi is known for never breaking his promises, but when reading Beyond, we get two questions,

Spoiler

1. Nezumi clearly states that Shion is his past, but he doesn't tell us if Shion will be his future too. We know that "reunion will come", so that's some closure at least (though it's still ambiguous).

2. We know that Shion is still our kind-hearted, honest Shion, but we see him doing something so unlike him and using his position as a leader of No. 6 in a way he shouldn't - for a good cause and because he had no other way. It makes you wonder about what Shion's father told Nezumi (and again, this conversation happens after the main story has ended) about rulers having no option but to become corrupted in order to last on their positions. As readers, we are left thinking; was what we just saw a slow beginning of Shion's change? Or will Shion stay strong and true to himself, and not let himself be lead astray?

[collapse]

At the end, we can only believe in our characters, their promises and that things will turn out well in the future. But you're left with this feeling "I wish... I wish, I really, really wish...!" (no spoilers here pfft)

The story isn't focused on romance but there IS love between the characters (and they kiss!). I read somewhere (not 100% sure it's true) that the author originally wanted to write this story with one of them being a girl, but then wanted to avoid the usual "girl and boy falling in love" so they went with two boys. However, our two boys still ended up falling in love with each other pffftt.

This novel is a must read - even though I say it "destroyed" me, lol.

But only a good book can make you feel so much. Go read it, it's definitely worth it. <<less

I do really love this novel! I'd probably give it closer to a 4.5/5 but I'll round down. Anyways, the story is great and the characters are well written! I have very little to complain about. But I will say that I wasn't a huge fan of all the perspective shifting. It dragged on at times, but it definitely made the plot more interesting! I wished that there could have been more in the story, like some more after the end.
Spoiler

I wish Shion (Sion?) and Nezumi would stay together in the end! Their relationship is so cute and not forced at all. I was so sad when Nezumi left. Well its fine that he left, but I wish the author wrote stuff about him coming back.

[collapse]
All and all there could have been more interesting plot stuff and some more romance. I can't complain too much since I really did enjoy the plot and the romance that was provided. I even read the manga and watched the anime haha. I would definitely recommend this novel because although there could have been more, the novel is still incredible! But you have to be prepared to read some boring parts cause it does drag along at times.

Even though the anime is not as good as the novel, I still think it's a great novel. I found the anime disappointing. I watched the anime two years ago, but even though it's a great series, there are many holes in the story. Additionally, there were many questions that the animation did not address, such as nezumi's origin and Shion and Nezumi's relationship, how they feel toward one another and how they think about one another. My only disappointment with the novel was the ending. In any case, I... more>> appreciate the translator's effort to translate this masterpiece. <<less
