The Monogatari series centers on Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjōgahara, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi’s arms.

He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. Despite being threatened by her, Koyomi offers his help, and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

The animated Monogatari series is one that I hold to a decent deal of acclaim considering the fact that it's an ecchi harem, yet manages to enthrall me with Shaft's superb anime adaptation along with good pacing, dialogue, and characters.

None of Shaft's charm is seen in the novel. What made the anime good wasn't the original material, but the way Shaft manages to pick and choose the best parts of the series and put them into an animation medium. It's almost an entirely different story. People have slightly different personalities,... more>> certain things are more emphasized, additional dialogue is cut, and the delivery of certain lines that were vague were creatively interpreted in the anime.

Reading the novel is a completely different experience, and not in a good way. Like I said, Shaft basically could have adapted anything and made it good, and it just so happened to be Monogatari Series. Nisio Isin is an author that's hit or miss, but certainly talented and has made good works before. This work clearly demonstrates the nascent stages of his style: creating characters that talk about psuedo psychological topics in a way that's certainly unique to him, but perhaps not always executed properly. Both Araragi and Senjougahara clearly has as different character profile compared to the anime, and not in a good way. How do I say this? Shaft's rendition of the series is so good that it makes it look like the novel adapted off the anime.

Even the ecchi scenes that were clearly undermined in the anime are dragged on to no end in the novel, another change that I cannot agree with. Overall, the novel's the original, and no one can take that away, but as for whether or not I liked the novel? Absolutely not. There's not much, if at all, that I can say positively about the novel that the anime does not do better. If you want to read Nisio Isin's works, Zaregoto and Medako Box are certainly better alternatives. <<less
