This is one of those novels I got hyped once it got an anime, and then did few summaries for some friends, though Flere on AS was faster so you may like searching his summaries there.

As the anime, Mayo Chiki is pretty much tons of comedy, teasing and more comedy with just bits of romance and a lot of family issues for every character. How much is this different compared with the anime? Not really that much.
I'd say it's more about how the MC and the girls get to know themselves through a lot of painful experiences. Kanade, Masamune, Subaru, etc., each one has some heavy experiences in their childhood and it's thanks to Jiro that they will overcome them. The ln itself is much more detailed, and some interactions are more emotive compared with the animated series.

The one thing I like is how the author and editor structured the whole LN. It really manages well the cliffhangers each volume, and it doesn't get much verbose. It's a pleasant reading that will make you cheer up for everyone.

3 stars but at a guess you will either love it or hate it.

I actually liked the opening but then it started to get weird and things started getting strange. There was also that Asian/Japanese trope of people being loyal to a family/clan even though it's not at all in their best interest.

Spoiler

Subaru Konoe, is being groomed to be a butler, despite being a girl and having exceptional capabilities, that would easily allow her to make her own way in the world.

At the end of the story the MC winds up fulfilling the obligation so he can be with Konoe. Just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

[collapse]

Absurdist comedy is difficult, and in this case in my opinion it wasn't done well. As the story went on it just had more stuff out of nowhere. As the shocks and not very surprising surprises accumulated it just got harder and harder to laugh. <<less

Fun story. Had its ups and downs, but I mostly enjoyed it. I think the ending is solid, giving a good sense of closure.

Seems like the translator didn't like the ending - there was a slight drop in quality for the last volume.
