Shibuya Yuuri was living a pretty normal life. That changed the day he was dunked into a toilet after an attempt to save a classmate from a gang of bullies. Instead of just getting a good soaking, he’s pulled in. The next thing he knows, he’s in a world that vaguely resembles medieval Europe. If that’s not odd enough, he’s told that he is to be the next Maou (Demon King), because his soul once was part of that world. The Maou is the King of the mazoku (demon tribe), who are coexisting not-so-peacefully with the humans in this world. Much to his subjects’ dismay, he’s totally different from the rulers they’re accustomed to. He’s kind, considerate, a believer in justice, and not willing to use violence to solve conflicts. Not exactly someone they want running a country on the very brink of war. Now, Yuuri has to deal with trying to become a good Maou, while at the same time attempting to adapt to this land’s customs and culture, all in a world where the tension between the humans and mazoku is reaching its peak

Maruma, also known as Kyo Kara Maoh! (or Kyou Kara Maou), is an incredible series that mixes perfectly comedy, drama and fantasy. If you love crack comedy and fantastic worlds, this is a good series for you. And if you already know the anime... this is then thousands better.

It starts with the protagonist being washed out by a toilet and present us a whole new crazy wold of swords and magic, everything is laughs and funny moments, but it's also full of drama and interesting subplots about political and social... more>> issues, war, s*avery, racism, etc. Written in a simple way, it doesn't lack double meaning or deepest, you can appreciate the nonsense of the Other World while also you enjoy other hint that are all around the text. The story continues as a comedy for several volumes, until the main plot starts to develop and we get a good doses of drama and things get serious. Every character will have their moment of spotlight at some point, and they're all really well written, with an specially good balance of good points and bad points. The author loves to "break" the characters if they're too perfect, but she does it in the most funny ways possible. Yuuri, the main character of this story, is specially real; we follow his adventures from his point of view and that makes it easy to get into his shoes and really feel what he's feeling, and also appreciate his development even more.

This series is rated Shonen Ai, and yes, it contains Shonen Ai. But it'll not be the focus of the plot and it's not really deeply romantic. Even so, you'll find present the basic principles of harem, and fanservice with all the characters with Yuuri. Usually, everything is for the laughs, as this wholes series is with all these jokes, but you'll also discover since the first volume that the plot starts with Yuuri's engagement with another boy, and later he'll end up building a family even if he's still not married. And I've said this is not a romance, but that doesn't mean you'll not find very cute scenes loaded with feels. We'll also see other gay pairings out there, there's fanservice between main chars and also other couples in the mob, because this Other World doesn't work under the same laws as ours and love is free for everyone, even if you want to marry a panda.

As a side note, if you get hooked with this series the good news are there's plenty of material for you out there!

Besides the volumes that follows the main plot we have the Gaidens that provides special chapters that help us to know better other characters, or even the side novel settled on Earth that follows the adventures of April, who later will be connected to the events in one of the last arcs published. And we have more, there are tons of other special stories called mini-minis, short-shorts or mini-novels, and also doujinshis written by Takabayashi. And then you have 70+ drama cds, some of them part of the anime canon, and some others by the author or the editor of the series (under a pseudonym).

So, if you fall in love with this series don't worry, you have a lot to read because the universe is big and full of details. And even if we were under a long hiatus, right now we're waiting the news about the continuation. <<less

Ugh, I LOVE this series! It’s rich, and in depth, and hilarious. It’s just brilliant. The lil bit of Shounen Ai is adorable for all you BL fans, like me.

please someone keep translating, because this is absolutely amazing and deserves a lot of love.

Okay.. First of all, I've been really hooked to the anime adaptation of this novel and no matter how much I rewatch and rewatch I don't get satisfied and instead increases my greediness for more. So I decided to read the novel and guess what? I love it more!!!! The anime is funny but the novel is funnier that I always get a second-hand embarrassment just by reading. The plot is also a lot more clearer since obviously the adaptations (whether anime or manga) always drop some scenes from the... more>> novel. All in all I really really fell in love with god tier piece. The story. The characters. I hope that the novel will have a very satisfying and good ending (but yeah, at the same time I also don't want it to end).

By the way, I'm a sucker for YuuRam.

This novel is certainly recommended for those who likes comedy, action, adventure, good plot line, handsome and beautiful characters, and a little bit of BL. <<less
