Okay, I read this novel almost two years ago because I was intrigued from the manga and I have not stopped thinking about it since then because I am absolutely MINDBOGGLED at the atrocious writing that occurs later on in the novel. Whenever I read other people's great reviews of the series that say that it gets better later, I feel like I'm going crazy! Honestly, I really enjoyed the first arc where the MC is just grinding in the dungeon and the side stories of the other people getting... more>> reincarnated. However, it's only later on in the novel when sh*t really starts to get s*upid. Heavy spoilers below for what I mean.

Spoiler

So far, as the spider MC is leaving the dungeon to explore the outside world, I'm all in for it. I'm absolutely on board with the series and I'm loving it so far. However, things start to get s*upid fast. After a couple of cool scenes where spider MC fishes for dragons and gets worshipped by a village (these were honestly really dope story elements tbh), apparently the mother spider was killed offscreen by her parallel minds that she sent earlier. And here's where things get convoluted, so try to follow:

The death of the mother spider alerted the demon queen, who attacks and destroys the spider MC. However the spider MC isn't actually dead because she has a backup egg and so she's back in the dungeon. The demon queen realizes this and goes to the dungeon, looking for her, only to fight against all the earth dragons. However, by the time she's done fighting the earth dragons, the spider MC has already planted more backups in case she is killed again. And then the demon queen goes to spider MC and asks to team up and the admins show up and other dumb sh*t happens that make no sense. Then the spider MC goes to the overworld to see war between villages and attacks both sides, despite one side being the village that worshipped her earlier. Oh, and she becomes an arachne at some point in time. There's also a (somwhat interesting) side story that is dubious in terms of time where she is and a bunch of other stuff.

[collapse]

It's been two years since I read this, so how I presented the story may be a bit off, but the point is: sh*t starts to get real dumb. The elements that come together make the spider MC so overpowered it's not even funny or interesting to read anymore. And the worst part is: it doesn't make any sense. I can suspend my disbelief for a student reincarnated into a fantasy world as a spider, but please make it consistent and believable. After she leaves the dungeon, the author doesn't even bother trying and introduces the most nonsensical elements and it doesn't even feel like she's a character anymore.

I'll be honest, when I first read the series I felt awful reading it, because there were already hints of the bad writing and I was afraid it would get worse. However, the author manages to hold it together (with actually good scenes and writing) until the MC leaves the dungeon, then sh*t gets really s*upid real fast. The worst part is, I held off dropping the series for a hundred chapters because I thought the author could pull it back together again, but the longer I read the dumber it got. I eventually gave up because the series was so nonsensical that I could no longer follow what was going on nor did I care at that point.

In retrospect, I would say the biggest red flag was the OP power the spider MC receives after defeating the monkey swarm. Up to that point, spider MC was able to obtain all her powers based on what she worked for: she grinded and deserved what she got. The main reason her victory over the monkey swarm was so satisfying is because that is what she did HERSELF without any help. However, giving her OP "sin" powers completely took that element away and instead it became a substandard power fantasy. I almost dropped the series at that point, but I naively thought the author would be able to come back. There are good moments after that, but honestly the monkey swarm fight was the only really satisfying moment in the series because spider MC did it herself without cheat powers.

However, the reason I'm talking about this moment is because the author keeps stabbing themselves in the foot by giving the MC unnecessary powers or introducing completely unestablished elements that are extremely convoluted and actively take away from the most compelling elements of the story. Anyway, I just wanted to rant at length about why I absolutely hate this novel because it was actually amazing for the first couple chapters and that initial amazingness made me hold on for hundreds of more chapters than I really should've. I remember being pissed when I dropped this novel and being shocked at all the reviews that praised the latter half of the series, when the latter half is what is actively the worst part. <<less

So basically I don't really know what chapter am I... (maybe around 220+?) I'm still continuing to read the remaining chapters. The intro started out really nice, the premise really looks promising and you get alot of explanation on the skills the MC develops along the way and how she've gotten them. I just didn't like all this side stories, because it deviates the story from the MC and practically becomed filler chapters to be honest. With all those chapters, there are certain parts of the story that confuses me...... more>> it wasn't structured thoroughly. And up until the chapter I'm currently on, I realize that the whole story just became too much absurd even for a fantasy-fictional story. There was too much of everything that it simply gives you a headache trying to understand the whole point of the author. Character development started getting bad and side stories became unbearable to read. Honestly, I really think the whole story became amatuerish like it was written on fanfiction.

So its not a hype, The hype was exagerated.

Read if you want, do it at your own pace <<less

Add me to the pile of people who gave up on this story after being confused to death. To be fair, the story itself is actually pretty engaging. I enjoyed both the slice of life first half and the epic second half, but after Blastron drops the translations around chapter 115 or so, a lot of what happens is just completely incomprehensible. It's very difficult to follow the plot and the grammar is all over the place. Still, if you don't mind machine translation, this might be a good novel... more>> for you. <<less

Honestly. It started off awesome, the kind where you love it or hate it, cheat skills, levels, dungeon, etc...

Chapter 200 is where it all starts to crumble...

The story changes completely, everything prior is basically discarded, and it's like when DBZ went DBGT but worse...

Spoiler

Essentially the sin skills end up influencing the MC to be a jerk... not even like evil in a cool way. In the "yay humans are yummy" way...

It literally turns into a LN about reading things from a monsters perspective instead of from a reincarnators.

No even any thought other than the compulsory animal urges...

Firsr LN I've ever dropped.

Kumo desu ga Nani ka is by far one of my favourite novels.
The main part follows, kumo being kumo.. and my god its hilarious.
Kumo, our MC has been reincarnated into a spider and she's great
at first... the side story's are confusing as everything doesnt seem to match well together, but if you continue reading everything just clicks!
and when that happens, its the immediate feeling of satisfaction and the desire to read more
everyone is different in hilarious ways.. and no character is truly boring. they are all entertaining in their own right.
the plot at first seems simple- to survive. but there's a deeper story that is so complex that its hard to figure it all out, only left with some hints of whats to come.
I really do like this novel, and Im not the greatest reviewer.... or that good at all really -_-'
but I just cant recommend enough of this.
its just... great!

Kumo ain't no typical reincarnator. Nai wa~!

Kumo is a spider. Most of the webnovel is written from her perspective and is fully embodied with our lovable spider's personality. Instead of a cheat-like god-given ability, Kumo spends a huge amount of time grinding skills and exploiting all the game-like systems she encounters. Later on, the story gets quite fragmented and can be confusing when placing a timeline to it all.

The characters are colorful and interesting, though besides Kumo they tend to lack development. The overall plot isn't very shocking but serves... more>> its purpose. While not perfect it's a helluva good read filled to the brim with character quirks and reads somewhere between a reincarnated hero and a VRMMO story. <<less

As a gamer when I read a trapped in another world or reincarnation story I am looking for wish fullfillment plus a great story. Who doesn't want to be able to experience the thrill of leveling up and becoming a god for real! Sadly while Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? Does have a compelling story it hits the typical pitfall of many reincaranation stoires. They create a character that does things that can't imagine any sane human doing.
Spoiler

Slightly before chapter 147 she was unwilling to overlook somone being in danger in the span only a few chapters she has mu*dered humans. Not because they were a threat but because they were going to burn her house. At this point in the story though she doesn't need the house for protection and it's really easy for her to put back together. It is like mu*dering someone because you think they are gonna pee on your rug

[collapse]

The reason this is a problem is it ruins the ability to connect with the character. I can't root for a mu*der. She is just jerk being cruel to people who commit minor offenses like some overprivileged brat. Of course if you like watching evil people bully people who have done them no real damage then have I got a story for you psycho!

The story also has the problem of the author made their character to strong so lets make them evil to keep things interesting. It's boring.

If TLDR then the main character is a douche by chapter 147, you can no longer sympathize with her and this causes darkness induced apathy.

Really. I spent couple of hours reading hundreds of chapters expecting something good and all I got for more than half the chapters was basically, watching Himoto, (Anime) and the comedy and the cuteness they speak of, its really almost non-existent that is, unless you just want only smile for a mere sec instead of laughing your bu*t off and giggling your bu*t off. For the WHOLE first volume or arc or so, it was nothing but utter casual reading and non-sense. If you hope to get something amazing out... more>> of it. To the point of driving me crazy; this is not it that is, for the first volume. Reading into the 2nd arc or so, the story indeed builds up and becomes interesting, but not to the point of me simply recommending a person to read a hundred of chapters of Happy Smile Lala Land nor will it make up for its wasted efforts of the whole first-many chapters. Into the 2nd arc or so, I can't simply acknowledge that this spider deserve the MC title. Not to mention that even after the first arc, the story builds up so slow, I'd rather not lose my hair and just re read a novel. The development given was really unnecessary and simply gave the spider the title of a normie. However, this novel is something I'd recommend to a fresh-new LN reader, while a more experience one I believe will dislike this more expecting many things they could only get specifically from just a unique novel. <<less

One of the best so far. The first and the reason I find this website (for real man). The story is quite unique. At first it was simply about reincarnated from as a low class monster in a dungeon, fight for survival, and evolve to become stronger. But then, as the story goes, plot become thicker and deeper, one by one mystery is revealed (nope, no spoiler from me). Most of the time (especially in the earlier chapters) shiraori or kumo with no name is doing monologue to herself, joking... more>> and tsukkomi herself. But that part was well written, and I don't find in boring. The characters are also well written, and some even have their own side story to reveal more about the character. It was well written and also the MC and some significant characters undergoing some development, so they are not just static or 2D. <<less

I like the plot and characters except the hero and his party, the human, demons, and Sariel.

Sariel and the others are s*upid because if you saved the world half of population will die but if you saved the population the world will crumble. I know that a lot of people will die but its better than all dying. Its like kill the the half and let the half live or abandon all. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

First of all,

This is not everyone's cup of tea. Because you actually need some brainpower to read this. There are multiple pov with different timelines so if you cannot distingush between them, its not for you. Due to difference in timeline, it might seem that there are lots of spoilers given very early, but that is not the case. It will only give you a very small glimpse of the future. To know the full story, you have to read the novel.

This isnt your wish granting op protagonist type... more>> of sh*t, its a LOOOT different from other novels. Its unique. You may not be able to understand it if you dont be patient. The first few chapter might make it seem its just another op MC type of story, but as the story progresses you can see that there is deeper story behind everything.

World Building

Its absolutely superb. The world, its traditions, its history everything is really well thought out and logical

The characters

The characters and their growth, their goals, their history, everything is really well written. You will be surprised to see how deep some characters go. But you will have to be patient as many characters background isnt revealed till a lot later.

Anyway, its comedy is gold. There is almost no wish granting type of thing. The challenges faced by different characters are very real and so is their struggle. Extremely lovable MC and some side characters. But, as said before, be patient and be smart. Unless you can process different pov's and timelines, you will become confused and feel lost (Its not really that complex, I dont know why people cant understand it). <<less

I wouldn't give it 5 stars normally, but relatively to other 5 star novels this should be masterpiece, I guess. The first part is really good just like I like it, but there are many unnecessary parts about other students, which someone, who wants to read KUMO desu ga, nani ka, doesn't really care, and although I appreciate world building, schemes and politics, the third part also isn't about spider. 7/10

The idea is UNIQUE compared to those jp isekai novels where there is the never-ending beta male MCs collecting harem members.

After that, instead of getting boring, the story just became more interesting!! She meddles with the human wars on ch. 160 because of a good reason.

And if you think its just that, there's even more!

Her communication ability that is funny to read and the plot twist made me think if author-san planned the story from the whole beginning.

All in all, its a nice read. Refreshing since the author executed that unique plot nicely.

Although the beginning can feel a little slow due to the worldbuilding, after the necessary foundation is there the story picks up. The way it's written, you get an idea of what's going on from a couple of perspectives but after the story picks up is when you learn what's really been going on and the way it's revealed is really satisfying.

Spoiler

You get side stories from another reincarnators point of view and also kumoko's point of view, but later on realize that what's happening on one side is much further in the future. So essentially you get an excerpt of some future happenings from one perspective and then everything that happens to get there, from kumoko's perspective and then the timelines converge.

The only problem I have is that it's so close to what looks to be a conclusion to the story but it's on hiatus and hasn't been updated for a while, so I don't know when i'll get to find out what happens in the end : ( <<less

All I can say is.

Isekai with an unexpected plot twist and hardships. Starting as a small prey and then struggling to become stronger.

A world with a game's interface but later on the story, everything will be explained with realistic reason (or not. At least it still realistic). Might be confused about the timeline if read it in the first time, but after everything connected the story will become interesting after that.

This story singlehandedly renewed my interest in light novels and anime after years of just ignoring all but a few releases. It starts off very simple and unfocused with the main character simply trying to survive in a hellhole and and like all isekai protagonists becomes completely overpowered... but she's not the hero, she's the hero's villain, so of course she has to be strong. She's the one making the plot, not responding to it. And once there stops being serious threats to her, she stops getting into real fights.

There... more>> are so many small things to praise about this story. The villain group's POV is very sympathetic, but also fundamentally flawed. The protagonist in particular goes from seeming completely happy go lucky to showing multiple different mental illnesses which cause most of the conflict. The ridiculous skill system actually has a legit reason for existing. The characters have a lot of depth and all have significant flaws and conflicts. It really isn't clear where the story is going or who will 'win' in the end and so on. It all comes together quite nicely with a lot of intrigue and mystery as characters all struggle for opposing goals where even the villains mostly can't be considered truly evil nor the heroes totally good.

It is not without flaws. The first part of the story is basically impossible to get invested in if you do not like the protagonist. There are no other significant characters for a LONG time. The first and second half of the story vary wildly in tone and themes. But despite all this, it's easily my favorite isekai story and Shiraori in particular is the most fascinating and complicated characters I've seen in years. I hope things work out for her.

It's truly a shame about the spotty translation the series has at times and the long hiatuses. <<less

currently waiting for yen press to release v3 so that I can smash through it as soon as they release.
