He was on his way home from school with his best friends when a magical circle appeared underneath their feet. On that certain day, Transportation magic!

Suimei was too late in realizing what was happening. He and his two friends, without any way to defend themselves, were sent flying to a parallel world.

…..This is the story of the summoned Yuusha’s friend who was also transported into the other world. Since this novel have some exaggerated bad comment, I am going to justify the review this novel been having here. First, is this a typical Jp novel?
Spoiler

I would say NO. Typical jp novel involves of being transported or reincarnated into another world, either have op power from the start or slowly getting op, is the main alpha in the story, having harem easily, becomes hero or along all these lines. In this case, the MC is actually a side character if seen from the hero POV (which is actually his best, childhood friend), who wanted to stay being low profile in order to hide about his true self from his best friend. He has been hiding his power from normal, modern people, so why would he just disclose it to his childhood friend just because they were summoned together???

[collapse]

HE IS HUMBLE TO THE KING?
Spoiler

what bad joke is this? Did anyone who said this really read the story? He basically threatened the king, sarcastically saying "oh I am powerless" in front of him, and even beat up the king's personal, best magician.

Also, duh, its normal to be cautious and not indebted to anyone, even to a king. Why should he not doubt the king's goodwill? The king got too much money to even bother with him? Oh come on, the one who said this surely is either too rich in real life, spoiled brat, never make any loan, or read too much xianxia/wuxia. Try make a loan with a bank, ever thought why they would be persistent in taking the payment back, even tho what we loaned doesnt even pass 1% from their treasury? The bank objective is profit, and the king, as a leader of a country, should have an objective to profit his country. Where's your logic in this? This is not some xianxia or wuxia for god sake.
[collapse]

MC is OP and can crush a country?
Spoiler

Again did anyone who said this read the novel? The meteor thingy he summoned is just nothinh but illusion. And he is not OP. His modern magic used diff system than that world magic system, and because of this, he has to use one of his masterpiece to fight a mere demon general.

[collapse]

They tried to make him seen smart?
MC is over thinking?
Too much monologue?
Spoiler

Duh, go play some chess, this novel is not about being smart or such, but about how cautious an MC should be, after all he in diff world. He has to think about why his magic is not working as it should be too. MC is not smart, but that just the way of a magician, to looks like a scholars, and ponder how things work.

Bad writing? Too much detail on character?

Everyone has their own writing style, so let just admit it, this author writing style is not your cup of coffee, and you just like a simple character without any detail like this one. The writing style depends on how author see things, while details is what author tried to emphasis that he is foreshadowing something related to it later on. Also, the characters detail is written in a good way and if you could accept the writing style, they aren't just some boring lines.

Unoriginal ideas?

Is there any other novel with a magician MC who think himself as a side character transported into another world with sword and magic theme? If there is then gimme the name cuz I want to read it. Also, there never been anything original these day, so if you're so pu*sy about being original, stop reading, driving, riding, sleeping, playing or do anything cuz everything you use is not original, even your techniques in bed are also not original.

A unexpected hidden gem. The writing is well paced, the story can defintely keep me interested.

Just one thing: where is the harem? Haven't seen it yet so far....

Note to fellow readers:

... more>> You shouldn't care about what others think. If you find this novel interesting for any reason, give it a go. Critics are critics. They are not writers. Hell... they are often not good readers either.

You need to understand a bit of Jap culture when reading Jap novel. Don't like Jap culture? Why are you even here?

MC is more alpha than most Jap MC. After all, not every MC needs to be a jerk/megalomaniac/tyrant to be a real protagonist in his story.

Why are you still reading this? Go ahead and read the novel! Have fun ? <<less

Typical JP trope.

Slight spoiler below, Read at risk

MC is partically a half-saint I could puke looking at his actions, he has power enough to bring destruction to the kingdom but still bows his head and be very very humble to the king that bought him to the world, he recieved some money from the king and thought that the king was a sly fox and made himself indebted to him ? Wtf, if it was like 10% of the kingdom’s money then it would have made sense but a freakin pouch ?! God knows how could that meager ammount could possibly made him indebted to it.

The MC apologises to everyone who wrongs him. Every useless thing that nobody really cares about is explained in so much detail that you find your eyes feeling heavier and heavier as you carry on reading.

But the real problem with this novel is how several people have wronged him by either trying to kill or seriously injure him with it ending with the MC apologising when he didn't do anything to apologise for.

The only thing this novel is good for is raising your blood pressure.

They try to make him seem smart, but he's not really.

There's too much description of everything and not in a good way. It's mostly just infuriating inner monologue of the MC about every useless action. It doesn't help that he over thinks everything so a couple minutes would take a whole chapter of this shit. There is a lot of repetition of the same details about magic and actions. Though that could be the result of them trying to meet word count.

I'm too tired of reading this for now. I'll... more>> probably read the word magic novel instead for now. Similar concept story wise. <<less

Some reasonably good ideas hampered by rather hamfisted writing. I find It strange that, even though there is the use of 3rd party narration, the author still insists on excessively using the characters to do the "telling." I think this leads to unatural dialogue/monologue chains and verbosity.

An earlier reviewer noted that the author "could do a better job of 'getting to the point'." I concur.

The author spends way too much time describing each character's inner monologue. In and of itself this wouldn't be a bad thing, but they do this for entire chapters (and even back to back). Other than that, the world, the story and the MC are interesting. But, like I said, the the author could do a better job of 'getting to the point'.

This novel is really good, the first vol. is quite slow and there isn't much in it because the Yakagi want to stay low key but in vol 2... god, that was so epic and so great that my Iove bar for this serie went out of control.

The wait is now killing me. For now, there is no harem but who knows ? Well, I'm good with Suimei going with Lefille. I like to think that I am a part of the OTP sect after all.

Can't say much about the later half, never managed to bring myself to read past chapter 20. The first half so far has been, in two words, dreadfully boring and

To sum it up, nearly everything the MC does is driven by his "common sense", the "common sense" of a magician who has been hunted and wronged by the forces from his original world. The author makes sure to write the story in a way that makes it seem like everything he does is rational, but then you take a... more>> step back and realize that everything damned thing he does is s*upid as hell, and is purely for his own desires to appear cool and powerful.

To give an example, very early in the chapters, he uses his common sense as a mage to join the adventurer's guild because he wishes to gather information about the new world in a low-key manner. As an experienced combatant, that would be perfectly reasonable, if not for one very tiny flaw. The very first thing he does in the following assessment combat is use a good number of imba-for-this-world level magic to beat down three idiots looking down on him for wearing the clothes of a commoner and looking like a short pretty boy.

It's not the only example naturally, he does it again and again, then excuses himself by saying, "Oh! This world's common sense and my own are different! That's why I'm exposing myself!"

Might get better further down the road, but honestly, given his own stated background, his own mental monologue/explanation of magic systems (OF WHICH THERE IS A LOT AND COMPRISE NEARLY 70% OF EACH CHAPTER) nearly everything he does is outright s*upid and childish. <<less

Its a straight up OP MC and a cute heroine on an adventure, he basically in love with her so he always saves her. The story line is pretty nice getting to see two exiled characters fall in love with each other on the way to kill the demon king. Overall the LN is a masterpiece (just that the author takes to long to get anywhere) 2 volumes and they aren't even to the second village or town yet.

Spoiler

PREDICTION: his two friends are gonna die in battle and he and waifu will take the place of them and kill the demon king and then get married and live happily ever after. Probably the married part wont happen but im pretty sure the first part is gonna happen, since the MC is stronger than his two friends

I was very much enjoying this, for a while. While it is true that the descriptions were overly long, I found them interesting at times and enjoyed the main character.

Until I didn't.

Which was precisely when this starting to become a true harem. God help me but I thought a veteran of life and death with experience far beyond his age would act like a mature person. But no, his harem members are like "I'm gonna shove my b**bs onto his arm to compete with the other harem members" and he's... more>> practically like "oh no don't do that I'm super shy I might get a nosebleed". The further we go, the worse it gets.

The MC, who started out basically not giving a crap about gender suddenly becomes friggen yuuki rito from to love ru and is like super shy and runs away from any potential romance despite the girls clearly liking him. It's not in character, it's not endearing, and it takes away from the best parts of the character. Heck, it comes out of nowhere too; for like 3 volumes the dude has been basically like "IDC about romance" and then suddenly he's like "oh no a girl I've never seen one of these before!"

It's decent outside the harem but the harem itself is pretty dang terrible, and that's coming from someone who enjoys harem novels. 3/5. <<less

Not a bad read, very well written in many respects. My biggest problem with it is that chapters 31, 32 and 33 have not been translated and cannot be found anywhere despite it being probably the best part of the story so far. Seriously, how do you just skip three chapters and just continue on like nothing happened!? Anyway, the story is good the translation is well done... usually. Despite this story being all over the place due to inconsistent releases it's still pretty good.

My main reason for disliking this is that at least through the first arc MC portrays a small fry who just got power and is drunk off of that feeling. Can't go into details without some spoilers so that will be below but as the first arc sets the mood for the story this leaves me inclined to not read further even though the MC's character may improve.

Spoiler

As they are in a different world MC is free from the hate and prejudice of his previous world but still chooses to hide it from his friends even though if they do somehow go back they'd be in the same situation as him.

It's inferred that he is essentially brainwashed in that he needs to go back to complete and submit his research because what sane person wants to persecuted. There is also allusions to social bonds but the "prophecy" he received seems to show that most of the people he's concerned with will be coming to this world further denoting that while MC may have high "intelligence (INT) " he has low, if not negative, "wisdom (WIS) " although you could defend him by saying he doesn't remember the prophecy.

Claims he needs to hide himself but makes it obvious that stuff has been messed with and left clues leading to him.

Purely for self satisfaction beats the royal mage, a woman who is inferior to him in magic, so completely and then forces her into a life/death contract that he practically breaks her.

With the above basically reveals himself to the king, whom he threatens, while still hiding from his friends. And the king is such a nice person that he accepts the threat while pleading for the life/death contract on the royal court mage be revoked.

After leaving the castle goes to the guild with the "intention" of getting an average evaluation but instead of pretending to be weaker than he is or just taking care of things with mind magic decides he want's to show off, thrashes the two evaluators, and still takes care of things with mind magic that he could have done in the first place but with this he "mistakenly" missed someone such that she knows his true abilities

There are a few things I want to say in regards to this story.

Overall, the premise is okay.... not the best but also not the worst.

Here is my list of good and bad things so far:

  1. There are missing chapters. I personally hate reading a web/light novel only to find out that not all chapters are available. Chapters 30-33 are missing.
  2. I like that the MC did not get his abilities due to the summons. He had them already on Earth and is solely relying on them in this other world.
  3. I do not like the fact that the author specifically mentions his limited items that came with him to the new world, but there is no mention of certain spells he cannot use due to that, or that he needs to locate replacement items.
  4. The MC's reason for not joining his friend is absolutely sketchy. He is obsessed with returning in order to finish his work but the issue is that it is not his work, it is his father's work. I cannot buy into this line of reasoning at all.
Overall, I cannot give a rating higher than a 2 for the simple reason of the missing chapters.

Premise: The protagonist and friends are seemingly average modern day Japanese high schoolers. One day they get summoned to a magical world in order to defeat a demon lord. However, it turns out that the Hero is the protagonist's dense harem protagonist friend. It also turns out that their original world also wasn't just a cookie-cutter modern day Japan, but a gritty urban fantasy world with a masquerade in effect. Furthermore, the protagonist himself is a magician.

After the summoning, he refuses the call and decides to let his friends... more>> go on whatever world-saving shenanigans they want to while he would try and figure out a way to unsummon them all back to their original world. It also quickly becomes apparent that, while in their original world the protagonist was, by his own words, a lower-middle-tier magician (read: slightly below average mage), this world, due to certain circumstances, is thousands of years behind in magic theory, which makes him the proverbial average fish in a tiny pond, something he tries to hide because of his experiences with being hunted in his own world, and then naturally fails to do so, since this is a Japanese light novel with all the mandatory heroics that imply.

Plot: The main plot follows multiple POVs, but it mostly focuses on our protagonist. Originally his goal is to travel around the world and analyze all the hero summoning ritual circles in hopes of finding a way home, but on his journey he repeatedly gets involved with the demon invasions and gets entangled with girls who enter into his very own harem of followers. There are also hints of secret societies scheming in the background, a recurring theme of the local religion being bad for the world on a metaphysical level, and of course the demon king and her generals proceeding with their own plans of world domination, et cetera.

Characters: The characterizations are not bad, though I wouldn't call them great either, as the author has a bad habit of first making a character annoying and unlikable (happens with both the protagonist and practically all the love interests) and the retro-actively justifying their earlier behavior. That said, we have a colorful cast, the harem is cute if eclectic (did we really need a deadpan gothic loli in a somewhat grounded setting like this?) and the bad guys are easily hate-able. It's not amazing, but perfectly serviceable.

Recommendation: I would recommend this series for people who like detailed metaphysics, as a lot of the wordcount is taken up by very detailed (and sometimes overly verbose) descriptions and explanations of magic systems. I would also recommend it for people who like mild deconstructions that nevertheless keep a fairly upbeat and jovial tone. I would not recommend for anyone who is looking for really nuanced characters or people who do not like harem comedy antics, though the latter only starts showing up around Vol. 4.

Overall I think this is a fairly good, enjoyable read, with a somewhat OP male lead, interesting metaphysics and a pretty likable group of female leads. It's a little heavier than your average LN, but at the end of the day, it is still a light read, and it serves that purpose perfectly. <<less

Well written, but the biggest flaws are the unoriginal ideas and plot. It doesn't matter how well you can write a story, if it's one we have all read before, albeit written slightly differently. Admittedly I would have given this a 3 star rating, if it weren't for the incredibly chuunibyou chapters at the end of volume 2. It was fairly well written (?) up until that point, so I had a hard time believing it was the same author writing these chapters. Unless the author is a chuunibyou, which... more>> I could well believe looking at the illustrations he approved. <<less

Chapter 28.

First of all, YES, AT LONG LAST, they resumed translating.

MC impression: good so far, a cautious and a smart magician, too bad he's only an average level of magician in modern world though. To the Character Lefille, I love your eroticism. Can't say too much since there's not many chapters translate yet, but the first impression of the novel is pretty good so far.

This novel suffers from extremely technical descriptions and wordy descriptions.. The plot is good and the story is pretty good. While the MC isn't the hero hes still strong in his own right. He cares for his friends and all that jazz. I do recommend this to people who like magic and transportation. Just be prepared for extremely technical descriptions.

C30 through 34 no longer exist...

Also, people calling this novel typical haven't read the novel... This novel follows a side character as he researches a way to return home while the heroes go do their hero's journey. The setting's typical, but the story isn't.

People claiming that the novel is trying to make the MC look super smart, probably aren't very smart themselves. He keeps a low profile, gathers what information he can, and is ready to fight when necessary. That's it...

People calling him OP, you're half right. The people of... more>> this world are using an extremely inefficient form of magic because the demons resist other types of magic. So, the MC can stomp all over humans, but has a harder time against demons.

There are some flaws, the MC overlooks some things he shouldn't and is a bit too nice at times without sufficient motivation and there's the battle loli trope, but they're minor flaws. <<less

More or less (mostly) enjoyable story of a mage & his journey to think he knows everything & hiding useless secrets while finding out the world isn't as simple as he thinks.

The GOOD:
An acceptably written story with characters & situations that could be even more interesting if the writer weren't so busy forcing things. Oops. Sorry...
Story & secondary characters/situation mostly standard (to slightly above), world design/lore is a bit different/not bad- though nothing close to an exceptional departure from the classic 'summoned to another world/fight the big baddie'... more>> trope (with appropriate 'lampshading')

The BAD:
The story is undoubtedly better if you're one who doesn't notice, because the ideas & intent aren't bad- just the clumsiness in forcing the 'cool'/'clever' situations is awkward.

Spoiler

The MC carries mercury in a vial so he can spill it out, chant a spell & make it be a sword instead of just acquiring one that would be immediately ready. I can see the convenience of having one 'hidden' & able to be made ready in a pinch... no, wait- he's got a dimensional bag- so- it's all for 'effect'. He also does useless things to 'show off' for dumb reasons, then badly fnds overly forceful ways to keep his self-exposed secrets. He considers himself clever the whole time. Well, others 'primitive' more accurately, because somehow using curses, subtle death threats and memory wiping (after exposing your own secrets) is 'civilized' I guess?

[collapse]

Some of the writing has quite forced situations which range from 'not so terrible' to 'Ugh', but would easily make the story 4 stars if rewritten with proper (less hammer over the head-ish) construction.
Spoiler

There is a sequence after Ch.25 where Lefille is brought to despair by Rajas by a series of actions which are pretty much bs from start to finish (blamed for being targetted & thus a magnet for the evil monsters after she almost single handedly saves them. She's forced to leave due to threats from the known merciless & evil creatures (who spare no victims), who for whatever bs reason decide to go & promise to return with EVEN MORE monsters. So 'We couldn't have made it without you/it's your fault- leave/Now the EVEN LARGER group of vicious monsters will come back, but definitely not bother us! Ah-hah! We're so clever!' (not). THEN even more troll the reader/crap on Lefille stuff happens to try & break her spirit, & it could be an interesting segment, except it's all so forced. (There's even a 'It's a trap'/'I know it's a trap, but I have to try to save the ungrateful people who didn't even give me food to live when they kicked me out...) type section.
Anyway- there's more, but the bottom line is To make the MC a savior, the author makes 'seasoned expert' Lefille 'unhinged-level' emotional & completely s*upid. By descripton she should have died, but 'plot armor'- she can't die-- she's got to hang on 'doing nothing useful' long enough to be saved

[collapse]
There are also more than a few logical flaws in various sections, but many are low-key, or the characters at least don't seem to care (as a few get picked apart & forgiven/'explained away' by characters)...
More lampshading now that I think about it.

Actually, the major directive of this story is a 'response to villainy' tale- where everything revolves around surviving/overcoming a superior threat (which sounds pretty normal, actually) except in this one the villains are at least partially successful very often, so a LOT of innocents die. Some writers do this to make things 'dark', but all it really serves is to (usually) make the 'heroes side' incompetent.

The different:
Hmm...
The world canon does do a bit of exploration of the nature of magic, it's origins & implied differences between worlds. It implies how those differences guide effective spell evolution, and how prejudging effectiveness without understanding actual effectiveness/context can be dangerous.
Yes, surprisingly, that's in there.

There are many missing chapters (though it seems to be currently being re-translated as well), so until it's 'whole' again go to 'Related Series' above & read the light novel version. (That's what I'm gonna do- I'll report which is better later- though LN (light novel) versions are generally 'fixed' versions of the WN (web novel)). <<less
