This is the absolute best of its genre its concept is new and their is always a new development by the author it has the best amount of fights, daring attitude of MC.

Its comedic aspects shines like the radiant pearl, and the turn of events in the story makes us not bored. The world of ISSTH has been beautifully described by the writer unlike other xianxia novels, the best point of the story is, it not only focuses on MC but in it other character also dazzles.
It gives us... more>> a lesson that "Never to lose hope in darkness because eventually their will be a morning sun". <<less

First I would like to say that this genre is generally one of my least favorite, BUT Er Gen writes in such a way that removes or minimizes the major negatives of this genre. (Negatives such as extremely obvious plot armor, jack*ss MC, a harem of brainless girls who fawn over the MC, underdeveloped plot-line, and various others)

Instead he gives you a likeable, relate-able, intelligent and humorous MC, with a well build world and great plot-line. (It has made me laugh so hard I was crying, and cry my... more>> eyes out, that is how good it is.)

I should also point out that the translator does an excellent job making it that much better. My Rating for this would be 7 out of 5 stars.

5 for the story and 2 for the translation team. <<less

I hereby declare that this novel is neither a 5 nor a 1, even giving it a 2 would be difficult. Everyone who gave such reviews can therefore be ignored. After reading through over half of it in the time it takes an incense stick to burn I have decided: This novel is worth reading, especially considering that it currently consists of well over 800 chapters and therefore offers a longer lasting experience, which is a rare thing to find in current times. Personal Rating: 3.8

Well-paced story of a penny-pinching, smart guy who inadvertently enters the path to immortality after being kidnapped by a sect.
Spoiler

Although the story is a bit slow in the beginning Meng Hao eventually becomes a badass scam artist. Story includes epic battle scenes and non-frustrating/realistic plot armor.

Not gonna say much but this is one of the best Chinese novels I have read till date. Has a fantastic and intriguing plot. MC stays loyal to only one heroine. Plot elements in some cases get explained after 400 chapters so it keeps you going. And finally Meng Hao whos pretty much one of the most comedic yet badass MCs I have seen.

I have to admit, I love ISSTH more than I thought I'd ever be. Sure, it bores me during the exposition (which is like what? 100+ chaps?) but I endured, lying to myself, saying the patience will be worth it. Guess what? I'm 772 chapters in and is hungry for more. While some people may complain about Meng Hao and Xu Qing pairing, I actually find it okay. There are people who just turned out that way. Simplicity at its finest :3 Even if their interaction is basically... staring at... more>> each other, saying just a few words more than 1 while a whole tons in their mind (or heart, whichever suits you). Meng Hao is a very fun MC, especially (a lot of people has been saying this), when he's conning others xD When Meng Hao starts conning, you better start running~

While the aboves seems like a pretty good reason for me to love ISSTH, the main reason why I do now is just 1...

The fact that the things mentioned hundreds of chapters ago is, not without reason and actually hold significance a good who-knows-how-many-damn-chapters ahead. This, is what I consider the main value of ISSTH and what sets it above many others.

Sincerely, that's all :v <<less

I fell in love with this story. The first time I stumbled upon web novels was when I was fed up with anime, I found a Korean series known as the Legendary Moonlight sculptor a game based series actually. The main character is a really shady person loving to con people, similar to meng hao in some ways naturally and I didnt know I liked such personalities. I like bad people conning bad people, not that I mind

Long story short, this is hands down, one of the best xianxia stories out there. I have read too many similar novels, dropped many of them but this one is sticking out to be one of the best in many aspects. The story (thank god) is not a reincarnation, is not teen drama, is not creepy ecchi moments, is not excessive repetitive explanations, is not harem (so far), is not too slow. It has 2 moments though that drove me crazy. That is the famous "CHASE" parts. I should warn... more>> that Er Gen gets carried away in the chase scenes and it just drags on like an endless bitter taste in your mouth. Very annoying. Apart from the 2 chase scenes, I enjoyed everything else. Very seldom you will see slow chapters, every chapter is usually very well thought, full of logic, tied to the very early chapters or tied too far ahead in the story, basically I don't remember reading a huge nonsense that popped out of nowhere (which is a very very common thing in many other novels). The writing of the story I would say is high level in terms of quality. Sometimes I read a section few times to digest the depth of the message. On top of the original writing, have to mention that Deathblade plays a huge part in delivering very high quality translation, this is probably one of the main reason how good the novel is portrayed. Novels starts off slow at the beginning, but the pace picks up afterwards.. <<less

ISSTH has one area where it's severely lacking: fight scenes. It's not lacking in the sense that there's not enough of it; on the contrary this novel is packed with more fight scenes than most other CNs I've read in my day. The problem is that all the fight scenes are boring, repetitive and incredibly drawn out. It's Just the same old shlick where both parties end up taking out divine artifacts and hurling them at one another, only to cough blood, use a emergency escape/life preservation technique and do... more>> it all over again only for the foe to escape and then a chase scene commences, rinse and repeat the above 2-3x until finally someone dies. There are a lot of other little things that bother me as well, some more annoying than others. One of the bigger annoyances is the stereotypical movements that the author takes the character too. Too many times do people put on a 'serious look', and every other paragraph you'll have someone vomiting blood. I highly recommend that anyone who reads this novel just skips every single fight scene, apart from the first few, since when you've read one or two you've pretty much read them all. Apart from the grievances I mentioned, the rest of the story is actually pretty solid. So for the repetitive fight scenes this story gets a 3/5. If you were to skip these scenes, 4-4.5/5 - the novel is much better this way. <<less

Meng Hao just lost is cultivation, this is a risky move by Er Gen, nevertheless the moments that follow that shows why he is such a good writter to the point that if the novel ended right this chapter I would be sastified. The fact that I know that there is more fill me with both anticipation and desire

Conclusion: read it! You don't like the fights or whatever, do yourself a favor read it because chapter like this makes all more than worth it <<less

I really love this novel, the MC is like Weed from LMS and is really enjoyable to see him scamming people. I enjoy the adventure, it is a whole other world with interesting mechanics. This is the first Wuxia (world) type story I have read and it does a good job letting someone like me who knows nothing into the genre, with the help of the side notes and additional pages for newbs to the story type/concepts. Now I am actively looking for more stories from this genre.

Anyway it is... more>> great story, great characters and interesting side romances. I like all the girls and wonder who he will end up with (of course I want it to be the first girl as that could be considered his first love) but I think he may just end up with all of them or none of them even. Rather interesting and I look forward to finding out at the end. I also find it amazing as to how he can make the same moves and skills interesting in fights, it never has got old or boring to read for me. <<less

I was one of those influenced by the very few poor reviews into "judging this book by its cover"; which I am now thoroughly ashamed of. I don't literally mean the cover art, but the generalizations which idiots give to this series. After reading up to the current Human translations, I must say this is deserving of being one of the top series in China and globally as well. I won't go into the specifics, so I may as well be generalizing as well, but this series seriously is of... more>> an incredible magnitude at the moment. I hope for two semi-obscure things for the future of this novel; the author remembers to keep Meng Hao's hair whatever color it changed to (white especially, thats badass if he still looks young with white hair) / as well as an in depth and gratifying romance/romances at least somewhat soon... it seems to have been building up for an incredibly long time, so I hope it pays off. I would also like to see a bunch of little Meng Haos running around later on as well... Try this series if you have not yet. <<less

While my previous review still holds true, I have had time to reconsider and realized that I was quite bitter about my disappointments. I don't think I going to far in saying this is a masterpiece for eastern world where writing is more of a painting, but it doesn't hold true for western standards where things are more structured and logically sound. Which leaves a somewhat unsettling contrast for audience experiencing both cultures.

Let me re-illustrate of what I said before about the shortcoming of this novel. In compensation for... more>> not having repetitive scenes loses some of the symmetry in the backdrop. There is nothing to lead me to believe that dragons, zombies, vampires, and other popular pop culture themes where suppose to be there until they where they. Now what makes author nothing short of genius is his ability to interweave this entertaining and unique slice of a cultivator life forward though not backward into the story

Taking from brutal outside world for a time for a time, you find yourself falling in love with characters and their worlds. But love becomes bitter when it's taken away. Not lingering on memories, nor seeing there faces again, the audience is left to feel continuously more lonely, but that is what it means to be a cultivator... so I suppose it's not the author's fault.

A cold wind dissipates, with the introduction of meat jelly, the annoying odd companion who set up to change our wicked ways. The audience isn't sure if they hate our love him, but he's a most welcome companion to our protagonist in his solitude. Then unfortunate strikes with the introduction of wicked lord fifth who drives what of left of scholarly aura of the protagonist into nearly a ruthless cultivator. Though it was gradual change that forsaken what we knew to be rest of what was left of the humble scholar, it is somewhat unsettling to look back at fine example of character development.

Still the weaving of of lord fifth into the story is what gradually over time made me let this series go.
While he did serve the after mentioned purpose, he seem to degrade the quality of the story into something more superficial instead of something deep and meaningful. He seem like the forgotten tool or plot device that other Chinese author use to drive the stories of less quality. Certainly, it could of been something worst like using females as eye candy, but the fact of matter is lord fifth exists to make the audience on a simple level happy, at the expense of it's original values.

So no longer finding any value in series, or any attachment to characters which I imagine I will see again, nor having a cohesive story to remember. I no longer find this remarkable, nor do I believe that it would survive in the standard western market without some reconsideration and conversation into an light novel. On a final thought that is more of a tangent without exploration, I think "web novel" would be better served as movie, or animated TV series in western world considering on how it's written.

* Considering the genre and source language along with elements of what make a enjoyable story, I believe it's fair to leave five stars for this novel. <<less

TL;DR: uncommon MC and really deep world building, its a story about understanding the world's secrets rather than MC's power progression.

Really nicely written Xianxia novel with multi-layered plot and many actually unexpected twists (wtf giant turtle?!).

Er Gen masterfully mixes philosophy, unique battle scenes and deep-rooted world building in ISSTH. Occasional humor included. And, most importantly, MC is a crafty one and not battle-crazed overbearing piece of OPness.

Unlike many other xianxia authors (yes, I'm looking at you IET, as well), Er Gen almost never abandons pieces that he used in... more>> earlier chapters, thus creating overall solid story instead of making several completely separate story arcs with the same MC.

It may be a bit too boring for those that read xianxia solely for battles or powerups. It lacks romance as well.

Should be noted that its one of those novels that evolve with time, becoming more and more interesting as the story progresses. MC is getting actual understanding of the world and expierence and utilizes it instead of just getting vague cultivation powerlevels.

p.s. 'this novel doesnt have any plot at all......i read 100 chapters'
Yeah, you cant skim-read this stuff, bro. You need something easier to digest instead.
It established world, outlined main goal, enemies and allies, and every smaller arc advances steadily towards this goal, adding reasoning and further details. <<less

This novel is one the best xianxia being translated. ISSTH starts out quite slow, the first 100 hundred chapters is pretty much building the world and also a lot of character development. As the MC learns how to survive the world of cultivation. Unlike all the other novels where the MC just suddenly realizes he has to be cruel and heartless, we see in this novel the mc's personality changing, from a lowly scholar to a person who is to be feared.

The novel contains humor and I could see,... more>> later on, some romance. I don't really see what the "big picture" of the novel is yet but the novel does have a lot of goals that the MC has set for himself and he progressively completes them. In conclusion don't stop reading this based on your opinion of the first 100 chapters (Chapter 70 is where I believe the story starts to get really good), you might even be confused with a lot of the terminology (names of sects, cultivation stages), I know I was, but after a while you get used to them and start remembering them. <<less

IMO one of the best xianxia series out there. The beginning is kind of slow but once I was into half of the first book I was hooked. There's a lot of humour and you just can't help but cheer for the MC because he's not a pretentious, homicidal prick that likes to tr*sh talk and kill people for no reason. The fight scenes are entertaining and the skills are very unique. This novel has one of the best world building I have read even when compared to the western... more>> fantasy novels. I can't remember exactly what chapter I left off on, which just lets me emulate Er Gen.

MH can be the coolest, best, most awesome protagonist that agrees with me and this could be the best series ever.

By the way, Er Gen would take half a dozen chapters to relay the previous sentence. Were it not for the fact that I have given up after attempting to finish ISSTH due to putting it down far too long ago, I still would have no motivation to finish it.

Maybe the biggest reason why... more>> was

Spoiler

The 10-60+ chapters per breakthrough using cheap, fortune cookie enlightenment. If you sawed off no other padding, but just the extended breakthroughs, ISSTH would go from around 1600 chapters to just breaking 1000.

[collapse]

If you want to read a decent, high chapter cultivation series, try like anything else. At the very least, you won't read a few dozen chapters to have the MC go from level 3 to 4 while telling you "people are sad when they are alone, and alone when they are sad" as the stunning revelation. <<less

  1. So, I came here after reading 'A will eternal' (which I absolutly loved). The story was entertaining, at times it was really thrilling... but it was just a bit lack-luster in comparison to 'WE'.

Especially the last 100 Chapters were hard to read through: I read like two bl-novels because it couldn't keep me interested....

Not to say it's bad, I enjoyed the overall story.... The end though I found to be a bit disappointing.
