The first CN novel that got me hooked till the end!

I must say, it's been years since I have read this but the story is well-paced and every event connects. Frankly, I remember being awed with the way the author introduced the characters and the universe this novel is in. The characters are loveable and funny. Also, the plot left me engaged the whole way through and made me wish for more!

Some people may say that this novel is really a lot to take in (imagine: 1.6k chapters) but I... more>> personally like how the world building came out. I'm also very satisfied on how the romance (or women in general) doesn't go overboard and instead integrates itself into the story seamlessly.

Note: Harem and/or romance really isn't my thing and I don't think they really add more volume to an adventure story than it's worth reading so imagine my surprise when I didn't mind it on this one! (Was actually sorta cheering them on)

Romance subplot and yadda yaddas aside, the story is engaging for me as the author has provided much food for thought and a profound history for this universe. Kudos as well to the translators who did an AWESOME job and for sharing this gem! Having read quite a lot and not being able to understand Chinese, your work has really brought me to tears (in a good way) as I believe translating the work did not make the story lose any of it's essence. Thank you! <<less

If you are into the Xianxia genre and have never ever read I Shall Seal the Heavens (ISSTH), please start reading it. It is a fact that MOST light novels are simply terrible in character development, story coherence and are overall very predictable. Yet most people (myself included) read it anyways, as it provides this interesting content and an pleasurable sense of progression (the main character [MC] will ALWAYS get stronger and beat stronger and stronger opponents -- except maybe Emperor's Domination?). Yet, ISSTH is a cream of the crop... more>> example of how good a novel can be when there are no such writing problems.

Having read my fair share of light novels, I absolutely recommend ISSTH as everything you'd expect from a Xianxia novel: Delightful MC development (absolutely coherent development) ; Plenty of comic relief moments; Plenty of fighting, with varied yet captivating scenes; And yes, he will keep getting stronger (most of the time?).

To top it all off, Er Gen, the author, has made 4 other novels that are set in the same universe (ISSTH is the last and probably the most polished one), if you decide you wanna keep reading it.

Happy reading! <<less

This novel is more like 3, 5 stars for me, I put 3 because it doesn't deserve 4 stars which in my book means a good read.

It doesn't mean that this novel is bad, it's quite enjoyable actually but there are so many plotholes and missing/forgotten powers that was only used once for the sake of plot armor. This kind of thing is very annoying when it happened multiple times throughout the read.

Still it got great world building and variations. Also great translations.

Edit: Although I did not reread, I changed this to a 4 due to bias of not reading much making me give it a 5 before. I remember that there was lots of filler, but anyways, this is still by far one of the actual good cultivation novels out there

One of the best books I have ever read. To be honest this is the book that made me learn to love reading and now I'm stuck on this site. Although I didn't like the last 100 or 200 chapters... more>> that much everything up to there was great. Plot twists, comedy, romance, realism, heaven-defying, grinding, hope, mystery, revenge, almost anything you could wish for in a novel... Is in the book I won't describe it much as I have finished reading this way before writing this review, but I can say you will never regret this choice of reading. Please... I encourage/begging you to! <<less

It is thought to review this novel because I found it so great at imes, but so bad at others. The MC was great, and then later on he changes without reason. Side characters are practically nonexistent and are introduced solely to be forgotten. Learn 5 techniques and forgets 3. Romance sucks beyond compare. A lot of plot was recycled and very generic. The ending was such a disappointment = (and the crowd reactions on every single little thing that is going on dudeeeeeeee. Even things that never ever... more>> happen before you'll read from someone in the crowd: "I once heard a legend." Clearly the author was just filling in as many words as possible

Yuou should read it for it is worth your time <<less

Why most of the non-Chinese readers in general get attracted towards Chinese light novel? The answers is for it's typical cultivation concept and the concept of dao. ISSTH did greatest justice in this genre.

The most important thing is MC is clever (It's sad that I have to specially mention about MC in this novel being cleaver and decisive because 99% of Chinese MCs are fools regardless of Authors keep mentioning how cleaver they are which actually shows these authors are the real fools.).

MC is philosophic in nature and dao comprehension... more>> in ISSTH is great.

MC's dream is to become rich which I like very much. Why would you like a MC without any special trait or dream?

The comedy in ISSTH has the class, not just some cheap comedy. At the same time the comedy is done with just the right amount it needed, it never gets excessive. It's damn serious when required and sometimes comedic and philosophic which gives you enough room to breathe. This is why ISSTH is superior to both renegade immortal and A will eternal. Renegade immortal is excessively serious without breather and comedy in A will eternal is overdosed to the point of being annoying sometimes. But ISSTH is great combination of both seriousness and comedy.

The development of characters is good. Characters feel real and make readers emotionally attached. Master-deciple relationship with Pill Demon, fatherly love of Ke Yunhai, brotherly bonds, Xu Qing's sacrifice of life force just to give a little extra chance for MC's life e.t.c will surely make you emotional.

The description of nature and thinking about way of life are sometimes quite poetic and philosophic which make it worthy reading all these descriptions unlike some other novels where descriptions are boring and just for the sake of increasing lenth of the novel.

At the same time romance with Xu Qing is pitifully lacking and Chu Yuyan is just pathetically tragic as I personally fill she deserved more.

Staring few hundred chapters as well as some war related arcs are rather boring.

Despite some boring arcs and injustice to romance I have to give ISSTH five stars which clearly shows the pros are so strong that they completely overshadow the cons. <<less

This was hands down legendary.

I loved it to the core

sure there were some parts where sh*t was kinda boring... ie book 1-2

... more>> BUT WHO CARES CUZ EVERITHING ELSSE MORE THAN ENOUGH MAKES UP FOR IT

basically in most novels, I don’t give a crap about the characters, even if they die as they are given pretty much NO character development. In some novels I don’t even care if the MC dies.

BUT IN ISSTH I cry if even a random dog dies as it is given more character development than many MCs of other novels. Every single damn sidestory in issth is like an entire novel and they are written so beautifully. Every single thing is given a personality.

This makes issth really amazing. the ending could’ve been made a teeeny bit better but I’m satisfied nonetheless.

WORLD BUILDING is hands down one of the best. Not perfect but it is still in the top 5.

only thing which saddens me is Chu yuyan.......

romance was only okay. I mean it’s like the only thing which bothers me

Spoiler

I mean seriously.... not a single cuddling and kissy kissy scene only romance is.....

* xu qing was staring at men hao with a gentle gaze. It warmed meng’s heart and he feels very relaxed whenever he’s with xu Qing

xu qing was staring at men hao with a gentle gaze. It warmed meng’s heart and he feels very relaxed whenever he’s with xu Qing

xu qing was staring at men hao with a gentle gaze. It warmed meng’s heart and he feels very relaxed whenever he’s with xu Qing

xu qing was staring at men hao with a gentle gaze. It warmed meng’s heart and he feels very relaxed whenever he’s with xu Qing*

THATS LITERALLY THE ONLY THING ERGEN SAYS EVERY f*ckIN TIME MENG IS WITH XU QING. Nothing else happens

But only the interactions between them is messed up. The things they do for each other, sacrificing and stuff almost made me tear up and were reeaaallly beautiful

also I STILL DONT GET HOW XU QING ENDED UP MENG HAO. No confessions, nothing. Just BAM and they’re now lovers

[collapse]

but don’t worry cuz despite all of this. Issth remains as my favourite novel and most novels can’t compare.

DESOLATE ERA was quite good and it can compete with issth. If there was more character development in this then it would have been on par with issth. To me it is one of the novels which has better world building than issth but romance was pretty much negligible. Nonetheless THIS WAS ALSO REALLY FRICKIN AMAZING. And had lot of unexpected plot points and mysteries just like issth

Tales of demons and gods was a fun read and my very first novel but it’s kinda sh*t compared to issth and DE however, It never got boring and was really fun to read

Martial world was also really good

and I really LOVE AGAINST THE GODS which was like really fun to read. It had harem but was not bad as all the characters had a personality and also the MC cares about his loved ones and helps them and interacts with them a lot which is really good.

i liked a lot of other novels but I’m too lazy to talk about them....

speakin of which, why exactly am I writing reviews for other novels in THE ISSTH FORUM

meh whatever.. <<less

I was really surprised by how emotionally attached I got to these characters. I often found myself laughing hysterically at the hyperbolic character flaws of the main trio; my heart ached along with the MC at multiple junctions; and at one point I was so unhappy at the turn of events in a single chapter that I refused to pick the book back up for a week.

With each book comes a vastly different path for the MC, as he masters skills from the dao of pills to beast taming to... more>> straight up swindling people. As the character truly comes into his own, his shameless nature had me in stitches so many times.

My only criticism is that the book builds, and builds, and builds, to... a fairly unsatisfying ending. But the MC was also so much more powerful than everyone at that point that going any further was just telling the story of a deity. <<less

Plot: +1 - Good plot with many twists. Great description regarding the path of cultivation. Many realms, each with its own stories. Good translation.

Challenge: +1 - Main character had many difficulties. Won a lot. Lost a few.

Main Character: +1 - Consistent character. An eye for an eye mentality is fair. Not too cruel.

... more>> Romance: +0.5 - Boring with just one relationship. Romantic partner had no personality. Non-romantic partners were more interesting, but relationships with them were cut dried.

Emotion: +1 - Losses were touching and meaningful. Passage of time was sad.

Comedy: +1 - Good amount of humor.

Overall: 5.5/6 (Best series read so far. Used as standard for the perfect series.) <<less

Dropped. Hard time following the flow of the story. Disjointed action with most of the action standing around and pointing with great descriptions of how magical trinkets fight each other rather than the characters. Confusing due to so many characters introduced once then goes away. Love story is not really there and the constant shallow physical descriptions of women that seemed to dictate their worth was a bit hard to read.

And every other line is someone spitting, swallowing, puking or leaking blood from their mouths. I like the MC for... more>> A Thought Through Eternity better even if the story has a lower rating the MC is hilarious and the story flows better with fun characters that aren't thrown around.

But I recommend you read this since the author does a good job but I just couldn't get into it. <<less

I am surprised I forgot to review this immediately after finishing it. But, that is good as well. Finally, I am out of the nostalgia and able to be rational.

First off, for a CN cultivation novel, this is Mango approved.

ISSTH is probably one of the most beloved CN, and for a good reason. For starters, the length of the novel is more or less perfect. Yes, it does get draggy at a lot of times, but it still is a good chapter number.

We have a protagonist who is basically thrown... more>> into the world of cultivation, and the story shows how he manages to survive in it. Along the way, he uncovers his mysterious past and makes many new friends who will only be forgotten after the entire book. Yes, even though they may not get too much of screen time, trust me. They are not forgotten. It's just that they haven't been able to keep up with the MC.

The foreshadowing and plot thingy in this is divine. It is pretty much the reason why I gave it 4 stars out of 5, inspite of how boring and filler like it gets at times. Like, there is a foreshadowing for an event that takes place 400 chapters later! And that just completely adds to the experience.

The romance is kinda forgettable. It isn't exactly a harem, but him and his wife... just fell in love. That's it. After that, they managed to reach the very apex when it comes to couple goals. But, there is another female character who... stays till the very end. Like, the sidestories!! I feel like that storyline should have had a proper closure. Like, if she was to be the main female MC... the romance alone would make me give this 5.

Comedy wise this is rated GOLD. YES. Not all chapters have comic moments. At most, a grand total of 25-30% of the chapters have comedy in them. But that comedy itself is gold!! I am sure that almost every CN reader has heard about characters like Lord Fifth and Lord Third. And they make for some amazing sidekicks for our protagonist.

Our MC doesn't really have a proper rival during ANY part of the series, and that is a downer. Why? because for a major part of the series, he got no aims. But this is not a SoL!! However, the plot does kick-in from time to time, and it kicks in hard.

The philosophical ad emotional parts of this novel are the torchbearers for CN on NU, if you ask me. The action is also well done, with crazy good translation. Of course, towards the end, it gets repetitive AF, but that is why this gets a 4/5. The ending was really rushed. But I don't think that it could have been done any other way. The author did meander a LOT during the middle portions of the series.

On the whole: Should I read it? Yes. Why? Basically because this would be an ideal beginner's pick for CN. Must I read it? No. Definitely no. Why? Because binge reading ISSTH is definitely less than half the experience of live reading it. That is the only way yo appreciate the cliffs and the little perks in the story.

PS: Now that I see this review later, ISSTH is probably only a 3. But nostalgia adds up to give 4, though it is a 3.5 at best. <<less

This is a roller coaster of a story which I enjoyed reading all though there were some parts that are repetitive.

PROS: Not a wimpy MC, Good transition of power levels, some decent funny scenes. Balanced action and romance.

CONS: Repetitive. Making this really good for drinking game if you listen to the audio version. Just look for "mouth full of blood" and "Mountain and Seas" and you will be drunk if not past out by the end of most chapters.

I just can't take it anymore.

MC: no brag no life, acute money grubber, idiot who believed himself as 'intelligent person', child who thought himself as 'adult', cool cool and sooo cool (sick of this single word).

Mobs: typical common fodder idiot (muscle+pride brain).

... more>> comedy: from overused jokes till not funny at all jokes, you'll get all of it here.

plot armor: overpowered.

Story: 1-200: boring and tedious, 200-650: there are some interesting parts, but most of the chapters are not too much different than those boring and tedious chapters.

p.s. The reason I give it two stars is because if you simply skim through the chapters and ignore any gibberish things then this novel should be quite bearable to read (?).

sigh, with all those gibberish things jumbled up in this novel, all I firmly understand here is, the most important factor at cultivating is your wealth, as long as you have an infinite amount of wealth, you could simply buy drugs to boost cultivation, and get the strongest armament to protect yourself. <<less

Update after Completion:

While re-reading I noticed, a lot of things inside the story were different then I remembered. How time twists and turns memories. Accompanied by nostalgia, I thoroughly enjoyed the novel.

I won't change the rating from 4 to 5 as I reconfirmed how I love and hate the mysteries spanned over thousands of chapters. Most of all those that get forgotten or not fully uncovered.

It also has something to do with my preference when it comes to the shared universe part. I would prefer to rather not have... more>> to read shared universe novels.

Renegade immortal is best being the first installment. I dropped 'beseech the devil' due to its darker and serious theme. I dropped 'a will eternal' and even this Issth. Even though I read all three before RI, I dropped them due to one reason or another.

Upon completing Issth I don't find it in myself to reread and complete the other two. I was planning to but not anymore.

If it has to be a shared universe by er gen then I would prefer stories with starting point of hero at the fourth step of cultivation or in a higher level world. Or a deeper connection between the heroes of the story. This vague and slight connection was tormenting.

Wang lin exists and so does Su ming, now meng hao does and so does that unmentioned universe. Knowing all that, how could I read another shared universe novel where the hero starts from the bottom.? Sigh.

2 dropped and 2 completed stories about the same level are enough I guess, specially with more then 5000 chapters between them that I read. It has completely killed of my desire to read any er gen works even though they are awesome.

Different translators for different novels with shared novels ain't fun either.

Previously:

i dropped it first in the early chapters when I read about a man's ass exploding when he was in monkey form. (As I was suffering from external hemorrhoids back then and It's a pain that can only be described for mild pain as someone poking needles in ur an*s to extreme pain as someone using glass shards to cut ur anus. It's unbearable, and reading about an exploding ass gave me nightmares.) well I quickly forgot it in a few days as I'm a happy go lucky fellow and continued the story because a lot of people praised it.

it was a good decision to continue, Story is amazing, for me it has romance, suspense, humour, one of the best translator translating it, with a release rate that is quite fast comparitvely to other good novels (and now its complete u can just binge read it)

Others can better explain its good points, I enjoyed Everything in this novel until I read till the latest chapter at that point in time, translations were fast and quality was excellent but a difference in binge reading and reading daily for me is I read slow when daily and noticed a couple of things I hadn't before, they were the two sentences in every battle, at the start " He snorted Coldly" and at the end, "Everything takes a lot of time to describe but it happened in the space of a breath or something about sparks."

It drove me nuts and I dropped it somewhere in between chapter 800-1200 and I forgot where and I dont wanna read it even though im quite curios about the ending, maybe someday I will read it maybe not. Anyway I would recommend it to all as its the only the second long completed novel which has some good points after coiling dragon which only had three good points action, translation, and long + completed when I read it so I could binge read it. <<less

Another great novel by Er Gen. This is actually the first xianxia I have ever read and it got me hooked into the genre. While not perfect, this novel is a cut above the rest of the xianxia novels out there.

Story (1/1 star) : A very good story. There's actually a plot here and the author knew what he wanted to write and how he wanted to write it. It is even more of an amazing story if you have read Er Gen's previous works as they are set in... more>> the same universe. It's an interesting and thought provoking story with a satisfying ending. Best of all, all the little storyline and arcs in the novels goes full circle and you will never feel that the author added something then forgot about it.

Writing (1/1 star) : Er Gen is an excellent writer. There are moments of happiness as well as sadness. There are parts where you would laugh your ass off and there are parts that would make you cry. The world the Er Gen has built is so vast and mysterious that it is breathtaking. His writing feels very tight, there are little plot holes or repetition (even if there are some part that's a bit repetitive, you wouldn't notice). There are few references to Er Gen's earlier works, especially by the end of the novel (to joy of those who have read them) but it you don't have to read the earlier novels to get the whole story. Plus Deathblade - the translator, did a very good job in pointing out the references.

Character (0.75/1 star) : Honestly the weakest part of this novel. There are so many interesting characters that could be developed. The casts of characters are memorable but I feel they don't get enough attention. They pop in every now and then but that's about it. It's disappointing because everyone of them feels like they have an interesting story to tell. The romance is lackluster to say the least but it doesn't detract much from the story. Meng Hao is an amazing character that carried the novel on his back. He feels sufficiently different from Wang Lin (RI) and Su Ming (BTD) that helps him standout amongst Er Gen's MC. We see him change and developed because of his environments. Seeing his trials and tribulations is honestly one of the most enjoyable experience I ever had.

Enjoyment (2/2 star) : Absolutely fantastic. This novel introduced and got me hooked into the genre. This felt like a proper adventure with the author knowing exactly what he wanted to write. There are many novels out there that are overly long and repetitive to milk a successful novel but this is not one of them. Loved every second of it and I cannot recommend it fast enough.

Though it seemed unnecessary, got to give 0.5 star for being a complete novel. <<less

Such a great story, though best read in 500ish chapter chunks instead of chapter to chapter. Not because you will lose interest but more because you will get frustrated having to stop every chapter. I first read this when it was at around 500 chapters, then reread it all when it was at around 1000 chapters. Only one more reread to go and its sad to just think about. If the fact that I'm happily reading 3000+ chapters of a 1600 chapter novel and that I'm sad its going to... more>> be over isn't endors**ent enough then I'll see what I can say about it without spoiling anything.

Much like many of these types of novels it follows a typically weak character who through a certain way is able to grow strong. What hooked me in the early chapters is that while he has a 'cheat' he is still weak, and his cheat is in no way free. He makes up for this weakness by using trickery and stealing away the good fortune of others. This is a strong theme in the book, stealing away good fortune, and it is one of the most satisfying things. Unlike many of these types of stories where the main character just stumbles onto this stuff and is forced into taking it Meng Hao actively seeks this stuff out and takes it knowing full well what he is doing. I can't even count how many times this happens, sometimes small sometimes big, but you can be certain that wherever Meng Hao goes he is going to try and exploit some people and make some profit.

Its a little hard to explain as I'm not the greatest wordsmith but it is refreshing to just see a character who isn't acting all righteous when doing bad things. He knows he is tricking people, you can see it on his face, but he wants to reach the top and with his power alone that isn't possible. <<less

At first it was indeed slow paced but after some chapters you just find yourself lost to the story, the MC is really lovable (for me) I love his cunning side, the way he can't seem to stop making trouble everywhere he goes, the struggles He faced to gain strength, the pain and joy He experienced in love and life are all things that makes this novel amazing!... more>> Every end of the chapter always leaves you wanting for more! First of all I want to say that this is my first review, now with that said lets begin the review

I personally find the dao as the best part of the novel, like how beautiful and detailed it is "The Dao is a combination of road, way, path, course, direction, say, talk, speak, truth, principle" and how whenever the MC gets asked about the dao he always tells a different answer.

While usually in xianxia the MC tends to leave side characters behind never to talk again about them, in this... more>> novel even when they stop being relevant they keep appearing in future chapters and arcs, even giving them a important role, beside the MC always keeps them in his heart and if any of his enemies dares to hurt them he will go full berserk on them

If you ask what is the weakest part on the novel I would say the romance, I dont say its bad I just say it doesn't feel as solid as the rest of the novel, while it s a beautiful love it is just so scarse you cant feel it complety.

As for the rest of the novel, it has funny characters that liven up the mood like lord 6 and the meat jelly, along with the money grubber and greedy personality of the MC.

Don't pay attention to vamsi, while the MC relies on pills principally during the firsts vols thats because of two reasons,
Spoiler

the first being his lack of talent at the beggining of the series, and the second being that after he remodels his body and gets good talent, because of the path he choose he can't get energy from the heavens so he has to rely on pills for about 4 or 5 vols

[collapse]

For me its a solid 5/5 novel <<less

ISSTH is an amazing novel and the MC Meng Hao is really a refreshing character, which shows exactly the real Chinese attitude of a scholar who starts on the path to become Immortal from the state of Zhao. I love all the reference of the Chinese mythology and historical one. And the translator DB has an amazing knowledge. Furthermore DB is really cute (but my daughter is cuter)

ISSTH, such a classic. Before I read it I saw a lot of people on noveltranslations (reddit) recommend it and after reading it I can understand why. What a journey. It starts out slooow as other reviewers have warned, but once you get past the first arc (chapter +70ish) it introduces you to a crazy world and even crazier universe. I loved the alchemy arc but, although I liked the story, I did not start to love it until somewhere around late 300 where I found myself laughing out loud.... more>> I expected action, hardship, maybe even tragedy from this genre. I just did not expect Meng Hao to be such a troll or Lord Fifth to be so shameless.

ISSTH is a classic to me because it is so far from a western fantasy it can get, filled with eastern and daoist themes. The monsters, the gods, the settings are incredible. Yes, in the end the numbers starts to become ridiculous with skills that can turn you to incredibly tall giants etc. But it does not give the IET vibe (who just gives me a feeling that he is throwing out numbers) but rather a sense of just how friggin awesome and powerful these figures are.

I have one pet peeve though which is the usage of the word "shocked". In some chapters I started to get annoyed with all these people who were "shocked" by Meng Hao. Either the author needs to expand his vocabulary or the translator does. Mind you, I am not criticizing Deathblade (the translator). His release speed is insane (two chapters a day, consistently, and sometimes three). But that is not all, if you try reading machine translation of ISSTH you will realise how fiendishly difficult this novel is to translate. DB does an amazing job. I am very particular about the grammar, spelling etc (hence my pet peeve) but the translation is of exceedingly high quality. Given the release schedule that is a mean feat.

I really believe everyone who reads this genre should read ISSTH. I am in awe over the author Er Gen and wants to read his other stories, expecially Xian Ni (Renegade Immortal). However, I heard that it is tragic and I do not like those so I will wait until the translation is finished on Xian Ni before reading it. I also heard the translation on Xian Ni is not of the same standard as ISSTH, which just shows how good DB is. <<less
