I came into this series wanting to like it. It seems like it could be similar to Battlestar Galactica or Macross. But it's not.

My first big problem with the series is the crazy fake science. The author doesn't seem to have a great grasp on most scientific subjects, and rather than gloss over that lack of knowledge (e.g. Our sensors say that planet has an atmosphere) he explains that events happen because of fake reasons (e.g. That planet has an atmosphere because there isn't an asteroid belt around it and... more>> the gravity is stable). Making up pretend science is fine in sci-fi, but making up real science makes your genius scientists sound s*upid.

I'm also not happy with the racism in the series. Characters are often completely defined by stereotypes of their race. The main character expresses relief that he had an excuse to not save any Indians or Indonesians.

I'd say that characters are extremely flat for what should be an ensemble cast. There are maybe three that have a real personality so far, but not much of one. That can maybe be forgiven since it's still early, and the main story has barely started.

The story seems like it has promise. Like I said at the beginning, it reminds me of Macross and Battlestar Galactica with the space ark feel. Unfortunately, I don't really trust this author to pull it off.

So I'm glad Qidian International brought this unique novel to the English language, but I wish they had chosen a higher quality one. I would love to see some good Chinese military sf. <<less

None of the previous reviews do this novel any justice, and an overall score of 2.4 is heartbreaking when it deserves a 4.4 or 4.5.

The main problem everyone has is that it tries for "real science" and falls short of the mark with inaccuracy abound, but this is a scifi fiction and not based on real life. The author is the god of this world, and what he says is the truth within it. The aforementioned issue isn't even a concern to those with little to no working knowledge in... more>> the sciences, and for those who are more competent in the area it comes down to whether you can accept it and enjoy the story for what it is, a fictional space exploration of the final human survivors searching for a new planet and avoiding dangers in between while technologically growing in the process.

What is not mentioned in the reviews, is that AOCE has a solid lineup of characters with their own distinct personalities and very little to no cringe worthy backstories or moments. The character interactions are superb, and nothing feels forced.

The plot is slow at the start and doesn't really pick up until they leave earth in it's apocalypse, so you do have to trudge through quite a few chapters in the beginning, but you will be glad you did. The plot itself is inspired and has an excellent pace. There were a few chapters I found a bit tedious, but the overall quality of the story more than makes up for it.

My only concern is that the story being complete with just under 500 chapters, a short story by the qidian ruler, there isn't enough room to explore all the potential growth the human race is shown to potentially have in the novel, and that later on the story will be rushed or cut short, but that is only speculation until we get to that point.

Overall, don't let the current rating of the novel mislead you into not reading this novel, because you will end up regretting it. <<less

With only 13 chapters there is not much info, but there is racism and a mayor plot hole....

Spoiler

The MC is the ex-captain from a special operation team and with that team he is trying to get a spaceship to leave earth, the reason is that earth days are numbered, the year is 2029 so not the far future, now that is all fine and good, but the mayor plothole I diden´t like, was that the US and other governments decided to leave the bigest spaceship on earth, leaving on smaller ships that could carry less people, the plot realy felt forced to leave that big ship for the MC.... also the racism came out of nowhere, first he wanted to save humanity, so because of the limited space, he wanted the best people from the world, but that changed to 5 million must be from china, the rest of the space was 1.3 m US, 1.4 EU, 1.2 canada/australia ending with only 9000 people from africa (that felt low with the MC having a african team member) and the rest of the world got the middle finger.... not picking people from india/japan/south america etc. felt really shity

Okay so I'm someone with an interest in space and basic knowledge about science. When reading this novel I couldn't help but notice some statements that are horribly wrong. While some things can be explained by a bad translation (like the issue raised by pendevin), some other things are just nonsense.

First off, several times the author talks about the ozone layer as if it was some sort of membrane that is difficult to break through, both when leaving and entering an atmosphere. The ozone layer is actually just a part... more>> of the atmosphere with higher concentration in ozone gaz, which is made of three atoms of oxygen instead of two like the type we breathe, but it is notable because of the filtering effect it has on harmful solar radiation (ultraviolet light), which makes life on earth much safer, however it is not physically noticeable and it wont slow you down or anything. The author seems to be confused because you often see those scenes of atmospheric entry and how the space ship heats up to bright red, but that's only because of entering the atmosphere at extreme speeds, not the ozone layer.

Spoiler

Second, when they reach the first planet, they need to physically enter the atmosphere to find out it's composition. This is ignoring the fact that we can already discover something like that from far away if we just look at the spectrum of light coming through the atmosphere. Each element like oxygen, nitrogen, etc... has unique bands of emission/absorption from which you can deduce the atmosphere's composition very easily.

In simpler terms this means that light will change in color when going through the air and so they just need to analyze the color to know what the air is made of.

Funnily, this is actually because of this property of absorption that the ozone layer mentioned above has a protective effect against ultraviolet light.

Considering that they have so many scientists on board, it's impossible for them not to know that, also at the time this is the type of information that is the most critical so they would definitely try to find that out as soon as they got out of warp.

[collapse]

Overall, while there are some parts that are scientifically accurate and on point, some other parts cannot be chalked up to science fiction, and can only be called ignorance.

Spoiler

For instance, I have no issue with the fact that about 400 people mysteriously fall ill in some sort of "awakening" or "evolution" because of space, or the fact that they find an unknown gas in the planet's atmosphere, this is something invented by the author and part of his universe unrelated to reality, however some other parts are just blatantly wrong.

Disregarding the fake science and just classifying it as sci-fi rather than fantasy, it has good premise and transition of plot at the beginning and you can find likable arcs too but as the story progresses the author becomes idiot and don't know what to write anymore or he ran out of ideas and just act like an unreasonable god of the story. You can feel it, it has become tr*sh novel. Yeah, readers in China force the novel to end early because of bad review and negative reactions. It... more>> has a good potential for a long novel but got destroyed midway.

Edit: May 2021, so after almost 3 years, a Manhua adaptation for the novel was push, they say the story will be different as the author stated before adaptation, but I won't hoping anything at all, as the author is DUMBASS, pretty sure this manhua will be good at the beginning then a disaster later same as the novel.
Saying they will change the story on manhua when they could have done it on the novel back then is a d*ck move already. <<less

Very enjoyable read, I give it 4 stars only because of the amount of "haters" whom are frogs in a well and can't see mount tai so to offset the 1 star ratings I give it a 5, if not for the author giving this story such a disappointing "ending" I would've still given it a 5.

If you are someone who likes sci-fi or anything related with space together with some base building aspects and understand it's just a story and don't give a sh*t about the fake science, or... more>> some half-assed racism (which was just a single sentence which could barely be considered racism) then this is something you should definitely read.

Around chapter 70 it gets interesting, but it's not until chapter 100 when the story truly takes a interesting turn.

it's sad that the majority of people don't have the patience to get to that point. <<less

a decidedly useless summery.

i assumed this story has something to due with space, since it has cosmic in the title but seriously, I wish the translator or poster would add even just a one or two sentence description so we know what the story is actually about (which is what a summery is supposed to do by definition). So irritating to be forced to waste my time reading something I might never have bothered with if there was an actual summery instead of a poor attempt a vague grandiosity and... more>> a need for spectacle. on to the story. Yes, the made up faux-science is bad. Usually in sci-fi they write a mixture of the science we already know (such as Aeleil's comments) with the science tech the author makes up, usually placed in a futuristic setting and often based off of unproven but possible scientific theories. This author doesn't do that. He says whatever and doesn't even chuck in a comment to say this is an alternate reality and try to wiggle out of his mistakes and lack of basic research that way. as for the racism, it's par for the course for novels from QI to be racist if not downright xeniohobic and obsessively nationalistic. It's not as obvious in most of the cultivation novels but in those set in the modern era or the future its very present. someone else wrote to give it until c40 before deciding to drop. I made it to 50 and I'm done. <<less

Why is this novel hated? I honestly kind of understand Zhttty is one of the more pro china authors when it comes to creating novels. Be it from a nationalistic or racial point of view, however ignoring that entirly. I LOVE THIS NOVEL and hate that it ended so badly. In fact it such a disappointing I stopped at around the 400 just to keep good. When it comes to the scify technology it really gets good and just having a bit of suspension of disbelief makes this so enjoyable.... more>> But sadly it just stops so I stopped reading just to not get disappointed.

The space saga after they leave earth is just amazing, encountering problems one after another and surviving.

This novel is anywhere between a 4 to 4.5 but the same as other reviewers im giving it a 5 star simply due to the amount of negative reviews that are absurd. Quoting wrong science or chinese nationalism as bad things which are generally specifically completely ignorable. <<less
