As a certified Crazy Cat Lady, I can't believe it's taken me this long to find and read this series... I only regret that I didn't find it sooner! This is a lively and entertaining story about a cat-turned-demon.

If you like stories with...

  • Non-human, simple protagonists
  • Straightforward, optimistic female main character
  • Loyal male love interest
  • Funny misunderstandings
  • Immortal/demon fantasy
  • Well-paced, steady romance
... then you will probably enjoy this series!

... more>> But if you don't like...

  • s*upid/simple/naive main characters
  • People who try to trick/take advantage of naive characters
  • Stories without detailed or action-packed fight scenes
  • A main character who forgives and forgets quickly
  • Cats
... then this novel may not be for you.

However, for anyone thinking of giving this a try, I recommend it!

SUMMARY:

A normal housecat dies and is reborn in the body of a powerful demon cat... but she doesn't care about being a demon, she just wants to enjoy her life as a cat! Through a series of events, she's taken in as a disciple/pet of a powerful immortal. Shifu struggles to teach his disciple the rules of being human... but Miao Miao just wants to eat fish, play, sleep in the sun, sleep in Shifu's bed... What do you mean, that's not allowed?

REVIEW:

Despite the simple title, characters, description, this novel is surprisingly well-written. The pacing is great, the translation is excellent, the characters are endearing, and nothing feels too cheesy or like mindless fluff. The romance is real and the way the main character slowly learns what it means to be human (despite being very much a cat) is gradual and realistic. Despite the light-hearted and whimsical tone, there are a few moments that really hit your emotions, and I actually teared up a bit at the end of the first book. This novel really surprised me (I expected it to be just comedy/fluff) and it's quickly become one of my favorites (and no, it's not just my cat lady bias!)

Lastly, I want to remind you that the main character is, first and foremost, a cat. She will always be a cat. Her limited view of the world, impulsive reactions, and logic are like a cat. True, she does grow and change into something more than a cat over time, but deep down she is a cat. If you go into this expecting her to suddenly go and smarten up, and human-up, you will be sadly disappointed. But if you go into this with an open mind, expecting to get a view of humans, demons, and immortals from the POV of a cat, you will have an easier time accepting things as they come, and just enjoying the ride.

Other Recommendations:

If you really like this novel and are looking for another that has a similar optimistic tone and simple-minded, non-human female protagonists, I recommend trying "Heavy Sweetness Ash-Like Frost" (a fairy imprisoned for thousands of years) or "Sansheng, Wangchuan Wu Shang" (a rock that becomes a demon). These have the most similar in tone and main character that I've found so far. <<less

This is a fluffy read, without much action going on. It's a very slow life style kinda pace. Still, since it's completed, it's a good binge read for the weekend or something. The translator also did a really good job and had helpful notes. The side character interactions were also cute and often comical.

The main character, Miao Miao, is also... interesting. I don't mind her tactlessness as much because it part of her character. She's a cat. Still, there's a reason there's no interracial breeding in nature. They just don't... more>> match up, an it it's made even clearer by her thought process. It's disgusting to see how the male leads in this novel treat her. Her actions and thought process is innocent and childlike despite her appearance. The second male lead, Ao Yun (or something), was straight up trying to r*pe her, which then was completely overlooked after he later fell for her "innocence (internal screaming: FBI there he is!)." The male lead's no better either. Even though her tries-mostly- to be "gentlemanly" and waited for her to mature, actions suggests otherwise. He, as her mentor, seemed like a teacher taking advantage of an especially innocent teenager. It's not okay how he kissed and married her without her truly understanding the true significance of the acts. The law doesn't protect minors against these kind of things for no reason! <<less

Really an excellent story !

This novel can seem cute and silly but in reality, this novel is really "smart".
With the volume 1 finished, I can say that the author has done a very good job with his story. The MC, Miao Miao, is well constructed and the way she is developped is well paced. It's not easy to create such a well balanced developpement with a character and the way the MC learns about human logic, moral and emotions is written in an impressive way. The side characters have... more>> all something that makes this story more pleasant. The background is a little fuzzy, making the story self-centered around the MC's narrow view of the world, but it's not that important because this novel is just a small story. Around the hundredth chapter, I was dumbstruck by the sudden intensity in emotions that has awakened me from this strange numbness that the MC has created around her because of her lack of sensibility. The author knows well how to trick his readers by changing his novel's tags in whatever ways he chooses. Well done !

This novel is reallyl an "hidden gem". <<less

This story begins when a cat transmigrated into the body of a powerful demoness.

After reading the first few chapters, I got hooked by how funny and amusing the story seemed to be so I continued reading.

Judging from the title, I thought this would only be a comedic story with little plotline, but the story proved me wrong.

I liked the story and this was a good read.

The character development is very good here. You can even feel as Miao Miao's thinking and outlook towards the world changes as she progresses towards human feeling from a cat's simplicity.

For ML, I can't figure out when he started to like MC but it was gradual. When I noticed ML getting jealous and then his very unnoticeable behaviors from a few days ago in the story, I found that after bring back MC and supposedly the part where MC thrashes his palace in order to express her anger that... more>> he won't let her sleep with him, that's the part perhaps where ML came to like her. ML's liking MC was so gradual that only when I felt that he loved her did I came to know of it.

All other characters are also very fleshed out.

That's why based on my understanding up till now, it's worth a read.

___

Must say that I had to pity the ML in first 70 chapters.

Especially when..

Spoiler

Miao Miao came to like a 'handsome guy' and he got upset and jealous. With his bff ML came to stalk MC to find out his rival if possible kill him. He dared to make MC like him. Surprisingly it turned out to be a cat. ML's bff laughed very hard and told him that he couldn't even compare to a cat and what would happen to his image in the heavens if people found that he killed a (normal) cat in anger.

[collapse]

And must say it was a total turn over when MC decided to be a vegetarian cat just because..
Spoiler

she had to eat fish cooked by ML, which turned out to be a total unrecognizable thing, because ML seemed disappointed when seeing MC seemingly not wanting to eat that stuff. MC's tongue went numb for three days straight.

After ch82

Oh God! I'm scared with Yin Ze's behaviour!!??

Our MC doesn't want to lose this friend. He is still the one who lived with her for 300 years. And although I liked Bull and Luo couple at the start but now I hate them. One had an affair with a Fox and the other indulges her child too much to the point that he can go and kill other demons without reason. Hate! Hate! Hate! ???

____

After ch87

Thank God! Yin Ze hasn't turned crazy and still the best friend of MC. He supposedly raised our MC for 300 years and this dad doesn't really want this daughter to marry off so early to a big man who just came and snatched her off in their happy times. And it seems that all the other possible suitors are just getting set up with the various beautiful girls that came into being her very cherished friends.

And yay for Mo Lin. Put together main cp together. ????

Spoiler

Mo Lin, "Miao Miao, do you know what marriage is?"

Miao Miao, "I do! It's when two people are together forever, living and passing their days happily together."

Mo Lin praised Miao Miao and then looked at Bi Qingshen Jun and said, "You don't need me to help you with the rest, do you?"

Bi Qingshen Jun stammered, "Miao Miao.... do you.... what do you think of marrying me?"

Miao Miao, "Good! Miao Miao wants to be together with Shifu."

There was a silence all around. Shortly after, Bi Qingshen Jun began giggling like silly, Yin Zi stood dumbfounded, and Mo'lin and Haiyang began applauding. Wawa and Xiao Tian joined in with them and cheered loudly.

___

After ch91

Oh god!?????? Our Miao Miao was almost eaten!
Spoiler

Freshly washed, served on bed and ready-to-eat Miao Miao for Bi Qingshen. But a Mo Lin came and destroyed the good deeds of his friend. But no worries, Bi Qingshen decided to relax his knuckles with Mo Lin, after all for three days he didn't exercise, as he covered ready-to-eat Miao Miao with the blanket.

______

At ch161

The last chapter of first volume brought me to tears and snot. The next first few chapters of second volume made me feel sad, helpless and angry. I dislike the human ML's family very much. Especially that mother-in-law. ? ???

The story is progressing well but can't help hate the ancients for their towards women. ??????? <<less

Dropping this @ ch61. It's actually funny and entertaining. FL's s*upidity is cute in general but most of the time it frustrates me. I don't blame her but the way the people abuse, trick, and take advantage of her frustrates me so damn much. Especially the thing about physically touching her and even make suggestive moves on her even after realizing and knowing that she doesn't understand a thing about it. She genuinely wonders and asks if it's okay to do those things and what those things were for but... more>> people trick her! They actually trick her into thinking that they're doing it to 'make friends', to be more 'likeable'. Wtf??? And later on the people still continue to trick her and take advantage of her s*upidity, their reason was they 'like' her to the point of wanting her.

*Sigh. I don't hate it everything about it, okay? It's just those type of things that frustrates me to hell. It's my deal breaker.

One of the reasons why I'm dropping this is also because I don't have the patience to wait til FL matures and understands her surroundings. I don't think this novel is for me. <<less

A household cat reincarnated into demon cat. Demon cat, as in the demon in Journey to the West. It is definitely funny, especially at the early chapter. Bi Qing Shen Jun is your typical doting (owner) lover and Miao Miao is adorable, despite being a klutz. It's a really light hearted romance with no big drama/tragedy.

The problem? It is super slow, be it in character development or romance. I often found myself looking at Bi Qing Shen Jun with pity, as it's pretty much one sided love from his part.

This story is fluffy and interesting, a normal housecat transmigrated into a cat demon's body. Well, at first it was interesting, for me.

I found the romance of this novel too fast and a bit unreasonable. Maybe because I don't like fast romance?? And I think there was a love at first sight atmosphere here when the ML tried to bathe MC in her cat form and she suddenly transformed in her human form, his reaction was a bit overboard. (Well, I think it is normal for a guy to become... more>> flustered when he sees a beautiful woman drenched in water?? However, it was explained in the later chapters that he was a formidable general who lived for a thousand years already and he was even pursued by the beautiful Apricot fairy for a long time. So why would he react that way to a demon cat who he just seen recently? So it was love at first sight right?? And I was never been a fan of an ML being attracted because the other one was just pretty. It's a no no for me.)

And the way he treats her omayagahd, I can't stand it. He indulges her even they just recently met?? If he was a general who they respected out of fear, it was soooooo out of character to spoil her like that. I mean letting her sleep on his bed??? Feeding her the food that she only likes?? Letting her break all the artifacts and furniture on his house? That really blowed my mind. And she was his student for goodness sake. Yes, she was a cat. Literally a cat with a past memory of her being a pet cat. But is it hard to reprimand her that it is not appropriate to sleep on her teacher's bed because she was his student?? She could comprehend even though she doesn't have a common sense, buuuuut she could still understand some reasoning, ppl.

Based from the world structure of the story, the MC is like a newly transformed demon acquiring a human body and she behaves like a total simpleton even after living 300 years before the ML took her as his disciple /slaps my forehead; She's been wandering around the mortal world for 300 years and she gained no basic knowledge. Seriously.

The ML is considered as an emotionless man because he had no friends (that what was the story had said) However, it was obvious that he had a friendly relationship with the doctor as they have this tacit understanding and the doctor likes to visit his place, which isn't something that a stranger or only acquaintance would do.

What really made me drop this novel is when the MC asked why did the ML left her that day, when she approached him because he looks like her former owner. And the ML was guilty as fck when he shouldn't be??? I mean, why would he be saddened and worse, guilty, when he saw a random cat demon clinging to him and decided to leave that cat because he has nothing to do with it?? Take note, he had no recollection or any memories about him being a normal human who has a pet cat. And also take note, he is a formidable god general of the heavens who slays evil demons. It really ticked me off when he even tried to explain that day to her, why did he leave her hshshshs. This story would've been better.

If you just want to read something to pass some time and a cat lover (well, I'm a cat lover too that's why I picked this up but meh), then this is for u. However, if you don't like fast paced romance and plot holes, then you should reconsider twice. Give it a try at least /shrugs; <<less

Read this novel if you love My Disciple Died Yet Again. It is similar in terms to the Master-Disciple relationship but the Master this time is more active in showing his feelings. The disciple is utterly s*upid though but only because she is a lazy & spoiled house CAT.

Some may not like Miao Miao but keep in mind that she is a CAT through and through. Im not fond of overly cutesy s*upid female main characters but Miao Miao is an exception cause... She is a CAT. This also brings... more>> out the hilarious comedy in this series.

Think about your pet cat suddenly becoming a cat demon that can transform to a human.

Not much cultivation is going on here and it just mentions it here and there but she jumps from the mortal realm up to the heavenly realm instantly so even if she needs to cultivate, she wont cause she'd rather bask under the sun on top of a roof or catch fish. (Benefits of a pet cat)

There's no plot and it just goes through the life of Miao Miao. It was fine as we read about Miao Miao and how hilariously innocent and naive and FORGETFUL she is... Squirrel! But then the story slowed down in around chapter 70 or so because of a lack of actual plot.

I'm still reading so will update when I catch up.

Update: I caught up with the chapters and I have to say to DEFINITELY READ ON. So much happened and it was like a bang and catnip and pain and then it's comedy again and then you will be rolling in laughter with so many funny moments as if I'm reading My Disciple Died Yet Again with the magical and abrupt change of pace and setting and it is AMAZING.

Miao Miao is that endearing s*upid character done RIGHT!

Her devotion and loyalty as a pet ca---as a lover is truly in the level of the saints.

Do yourself a favor and read this! <<less

the novel started out fun. the author is very good at writing cat behaviour and humanizing it. I loved miao miao slow growth. laughed at her antics and cried with her when growing pains started to grip her.

miao miao is a gem that must be protected.

however...

... more>> i am very conflicted with the romance aspect of this novel.

a part of me just keeps screaming "grooming! grooming! grooming!"

mostly bc of just how child-like miao miao is. she embodied the trope "born sexy yesterday" where a woman is considered sexually attractive but has the mentality of a child. and their love interest is usually the person who teaches them the ways of love and sexuality. so that's why this relationship makes me uncomfortable. miao miao is basically being groomed and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth everytime characters allude to them getting together. it does not help that sometimes shen jun acts like her father at times.

so that's why I couldn't finish this. the more the plot started to go further and further into this direction the more uncomfortable I got. this just wasn't my cup of tea. <<less

Honestly, I’m not sure what to feel regarding this novel. I actually enjoyed the first book, it was mostly funny though there was that heartbreaking scene at the end. I felt the same way in the second book but for the third one, I think it somehow got quite chaotic. Although I think it was brilliant that the author was able to make all those connections, I just feel that the execution at the end did not work well for me. I lost enthusiasm on the third book and barely... more>> finished reading since it’d be a waste that I’m almost done anyway. Initially, I thought this novel will be all fun and a light read based on the summary, I was not really expecting that this will cover numerous years and multiple lifetimes. I did appreciate that this kind of twist was included in the novel and it was actually deeper that I thought.

The FL is too innocent for her own good though that’s what makes it more fun. It was hilarious that she had no idea about human matters though I think mating, in any case, is part of animal instinct so she should not be totally clueless.
Spoiler

(That’s why I think this part of her is quite inconsistent since she, who has a mindset of a cat, knows that she won’t get pregnant unless it’s a male cat. Moreover, she was able to initiate a deep kiss between her and the ML while making fun of the latter who only did a light kiss.)

[collapse]
It was nice to see her develop common sense and understand human emotions. I just hope she she paid more love and attention to XM. I felt that she was too focused on the ML and XM somehow has a dispensable existence to her except for the end part.

As to the ML, I love he how he always have a soft spot for the FL. He tolerates and pampers her very well. I think I don’t have much to say about his characters. On another note, I do love that the people around them are always present and supportive to them for all their lifetimes. <<less

One of the best books on reincarnation in terms of buildup of emotions. All three books have their own place in the circle of each persons life. Everything is so beautifully connected to butterfly effect and the comedic relief in the beginning of the each book helps balance out the bleakness towards each books end.

BUT WORRY NOT, IT IS A HAPPY ENDING; one that is very normal, natural and human.

Miao Miao, a cat, is very naive, cute, and straightforward. Her antics were adorable but also cruel sometimes because she was a sheltered and spoiled cat before and doesn't know empathy.

Knowing this novel is gonna be naive Miao Miao's slice of life, I was already not expecting much but leisure, enjoyment, and fluff. But I was really hoping for at least a little bit of character development. She doesn't have to completely learn to be "human" cause that would just make this leisure novel complicated but she should really learn... more>> to empathise cause hurting people left and right, even unintentionally, is very not cute. Most importantly, where in the world is her wariness?? I guess it's because theres always people to protect her but for 300+ years theres not even a little bit of wariness??? It's always so frustrating to see her being taken advantage of by others specially that r*pist Ao Yun. I don't know what else is his role gonna be in this novel but as far as c61 he only appears to sexually harass Miao Miao EVERY. TIME. In the first place, even an indoor cat knows empathy and after so many years her mind should at least mature a little bit. Enough to recognise maliciousness. The author didn't have to make her this clueless. Not for 300+ years. <<less

The novel had excellent pacing and was extremely funny and well written. The author consistently adapts the POV of a cat which is a strength for it (for instance she doesn't miraculously change into a human with normal thoughts more like she is a cat who develops some human-like traits). Even when she develops emotions and some understanding of humanity she doesn't change much). Probably one of the most funny elements in the story is the way the novelist describes sexuality through the POV of a cat. Hilarity ensues. I... more>> did raise an eyebrow when this cat finally engages in the act itself if only because she didn't seem to have a full understanding of what is going to happen but it was still funny (sorry... it was...) and consistent with her character. Don't get me started on 'Turtles'. I strongly recommend it. <<less
