It was a Fun ride. The story was interesting and fun.

The character was develop. But the end was rushed is what I believed. No mention of some characters too.

Like the girl with the snake eyes. (Not medusa)

... more>> But some would say the story was sh*t or the usual clichè.

Lets be honest here. In this time I doubt theres something new to novels. Everyone would use the same concept eventually. So only idiots would say its the usual clichè stuff. Only thing needed was how it was written.

So if you are someone who don't give a damn about every last detail in the frikkin story. Juat read this and have fun with it. Don't mind the 'MC being too much of a chick magnet' kind of thing.

In this setting strength is power and fame. Its what attracts people to them. <<less

This is certainly one of the novels I have enjoyed the most. It is very long, but it's very interesting. Spoilers are marked
Some people say that the training/ refining part is boring... But they simply don't know what they want. This is not a Japanese light novel, so the characters aren't supposed to go BOOM ONE PUNCH MAN. The training arcs are necessary to make the character grow stronger, and there is also a lot of fighting at the limits of the character's strength because it makes it more... more>> exciting (than just a lv.60 character destroying lv.25 noobs like in SAO)
The refining part is also much better than just a single sentence: "He refined his flame and advanced a level"

It's much more interesting to learn the path of the refinement inside the body, and feel the pain with the character.

Also, if you don't like harem, then this isn't for you. Honestly, if people actually read the tags next to a novel, they wouldn't be complaining...

EDIT: I finally finished the novel, and honestly, I don't know how to feel about it. It feels quite rushed near the end, and many of the things that made the novel interesting stop becoming interesting when
Spoiler

the MC becomes so OP there is basically only one person in the universe to contend with him

The translations and edits are pretty good. The levels of power get quite confusing but I got it for the most part. I would like it better if the growth of the power levels were translated into some better phrasings.

The story has some cliche moments but I felt it did tell some unique ideas, especially the alchemy parts. I like reading about training, I like seeing how they get to become stronger and why. So this story has lots of that in great detail. A very well thought out system... more>> and great ideas here, at least for me. A fun adventure and great tension.

There is even a consistent love interest, though some of the other females seem to fall for the hero a tad too much, it's never so bad that I can't go along with it. It's a long tale and while some patterns do repeat I don't mind as the author has made them all have something interesting.

Not much learning depth or deeper truths. Most villains are just raging out of control which leaves me wishing for one evil type that is just trying to make a living and feed his family.

I enjoy the writing and have read up to the latest release. Some very fun ideas and a very big world. I like the mysteries the author has created and one evil group truly creeps me out. <<less

Decent novel so far. MC is a super talented and hardworking, even though at the start of the novel there was a short period where he was a "tr*sh". He has an old teacher that is a spiritual body inside a ring. His teacher was very powerful alchemist.

The world that is created has multiple lifeforms, even few intelligent lifeforms besides Magic Beasts. Cultivators has a specific affinity towards either wind, fire, wood etc... So they practice different Qi Methods and techniques, which are hard to find and get. Alchemists are... more>> rare since they are people who have mutated soul - MC is alchemist. World has something called "Heavenly/Essence Flames" which are some naturally formed strong flames.

The thing that I don't like is that there are only these strong flames in the world - there is no strong lightning essence or water essence or any other kind of essence... This sucks.

Story plot is not boring and is not repetitive. Also, MC has a few setbacks so this is not the type of novel where MC just keeps wining or gets revenge very fast.

Because of this novel I'm sick of following words: "cold", "soft", "smile/smiled", "jade", "startled", "slightly", "laughter"... The number of these words in this novel is hugeeeeeeeeee....

What I didn't like so far, besides the fact that other essences are missing in the created world:

Spoiler
    • Rape
    • Romance has started very well but I read in spoilers that it ends as harem, which basically broke this aspect of the novel. Although harem is common in the novels, I think that this novel would have been much better if that didn't happen
    • MC has talent for cultivation and alchemy, but sucks at tactics and is too impulsive. He isn't a calculating person and lacks good strategies when going into a fight. This happens even after a few setbacks where he is a "matured" person.
    • MC has too much (poorly described) luck. Every MC in novels is lucky so he has a good teacher, finds treasures and techniques so these things happen in this novel too. However, additionally to this, there is, for example, one scene before chapter 700 where MC has not only miraculously survived but also become much stronger and here author didn't even know how to explain this. There was absolutely no logic behind it so author couldn't find words to describe it - he basically said that "something unknown happened" and after that MC got incredible gains (when MC consumed second Heavenly/Essence Flame)
    • Battles have too many loopholes and s*upid scenes... like when MC is using one of his techniques to move very fast... One other example is a battle where they anticipated that someone from Hall of Souls will show up so they left Medusa hidden to fight against him. The next scene, he shows up, he talks a little bit and then he kills two Dou Wangs, while Medusa has still not shown up - WTF??? It also sucks that battle scenes are described in a way that someone says something before an (sneak) attack and when opponent blocks that attack it gives an impression that he managed to block it because the person was s*upid to first say something before attacking.

EDIT:

First part of the review was for the part until chapter 1270. After reading until chapter 1401, I just have to add that it doesn't get better and the number of plot holes keeps increasing : ( <<less

Seems like a ton of people rate it low now'adays, "generic". But what if this was the first introduction someone had to the fantastic world of wuxia and xianxia.

I do get it, I've read my fair share of online novels can't say I'm an expert on the topic. So I'll just state the obvious, it has common elements to the majority of novels out there. But these elements shouldn't be the downside but make you realise that's the fun in this type of novels.

This novel was one of my... more>> firsts, still remember when I was surfing with no real purpose and I stumble on the gem He-Man was translating Stellar Transformation. What can I say, I was hooked on the genre.

I enjoy the fact that you grow along side your specific MC through out the novel, sure he may not act as you want in some cases, but the MC isn't something you as a reader can control. The MC has all the luck one can find an amazing teacher and to top it all off "the plot armor is strong in this one". True I wish it had a darker tone, don't be such a goodie-goodie-two-shoes. No problem with the harem, heck get more for all I care, the characters aren't really worth while in my opinion I tend to forget most of 'em.

I'll rate it at a 3.5, mainly because I remember the time I was stoked to see a new chapter here and there, when the amount of novels translated were about 3-4 can't remember but few in any case. <<less

I tried to like this story. I honestly did. However when the story reads like watching the author play an mmo, I just lost patience with it as a whole. The MC takes a quest that seems really interesting then decided to do 100 unrelated sidequests before getting to the part of the story you're interested in and this happens multiple times it just gets tiring. Even sidequests get pushed aside in favour of other sidequests.

Decent, worth a read just to get a feel of the authors work, for example there is a somewhat good alchemy training but can't be compared to issth though it's still really good to read. Suggest giving it a try if you don't like it then quit.

Like many said competent MC, he works hard, has the talent, and a mysterious however good teaching from a strong power of a teacher. Many lucky drops in the novel which do get annoying but his ability and rapid growth is limited by his young age so it must be accepted. Good read if you have the time so go for it!

Great story, never gets bogged down with over explaining anything, main character isn't an op monster all the time, enemies have more identity then "You are inferior, now die" yeah those guys are there but they're usually minions or random encounters, the ranking system is told as needed with a basic explanation at the beginning and details told when encountered, and I don't know if this was important to you but the main character isn't some Tymora blessed fool who lucks into everything. He works for it.

A story that majorly revolves around alchemy, cultivation, and growing powerful, while developing characters, an interesting world, and a great martial arts system. This is definitely one of the better series out there. The plot is interesting, the author places a lot of emphasis on world building and character development, and pretty much every character in this book (even the standard xianxia villains) have a background. The author builds his plot and the pacing can seem slow, but It is totally worth it. Literally reading every chapter makes you want... more>> the next one. The only weakness is that the author’s description of character’s appearances can be a little poor (not compared to other web novels, but in terms of writing in general). If you don’t mind women sometimes being simply described as attractive without going into detail, or the main character being described as handsome, you won’t care. <<less

The Good
- BTTH has one of the best MC's in my opinion. He is not crazy ruthless, is very respectful of others and is extremely hard working.
- He slowly works his way up the ladder of power despite having the ridiculous cheat that is his teacher.
- Although it is a harem, Xiao Yan is very true to his loved ones and is not unfaithful but put in positions leaving him no choice.
- All in all Xiao Yan is a very balanced MC who is not a... more>> condescending jackass.
The Bad
- The story is sometimes dragged out with the author sometimes taking several chapters to just describe the MC gaining a level, recovering from an injury or creating a pill. So it does tend to get rather boring during such times. <<less

Could’ve been a great story but just feel a bit dragging at times. Also the author likes to “try” to build up a hype for an event, only when it came to the actual event, it was quite lacking and unimpressive. Moreover, the MC’s drive for revenge seems a bit unwarranted and immature at times. Meaning that sometimes I just don’t understand how is the MC is so furious over something that really isn’t that serious. Lime how he put emphasis on the 3 yr meet that he has been... more>> wronged so badly, but to me it was just a trivial thing... additionally the MC doesn’t have show any kind of patience or tact at times, and doesn’t think things through and worry about consequences.

Spoiler

So after his dad goes missing after the attack of misty mistycloud elder, he still charges into the mistycloud sect to kill the elder and damages the entire sect along the way. Now I understand that he’s made because of what happened and I was initially ok with it cause I thought mistycloud captured his dad, but that wasn’t the case... they even tried to explain that things aren’t so bad and that no one really died and offered to give restitution for the damages and give him face, and offered to help find his dad, so things won’t go spiraling out of control, still he wouldn’t hear it... even after everyone tried to talk him down and offer a solution to the problem he didn’t want to talk and just wanted to kill and destroy... I might understand if he still wanted to kill the elder but at this point he should’ve shown some restraint because he still had other options. He could plot, and bide his time, at least until he gets stronger to do something about it.

When I said get stronger, it wasn’t so he is strong enough to kill the elder easily and defend against yan shan, but strong enough to protect and ensure his clan’s safety. Does he thinks that he is strong enough to protect them? I mean sure he moved them, but that doesn’t ensure their safety. At this point the mistycloud sect is strong enough to damage and destroy the his clan while he isn’t around... again, he should think things through and stop acting like there isn’t any other way... but no, he wants to kill and wage and open all out war with a section that he still couldn’t handle by himself... of course mistycloud will retaliate after what he had done to the sect... he didn’t just kill a single person but also damaged the whole sect while people were trying to reason with him...

Review as of Ch 344.

Battle Through the Heavens is one of the prime examples of a popular Chinese novel. The author's previous work "Wu Dong Qian Kun" was very average of the genre, and the improvements in BTTH is quite noticeable, though still plagued by a meandering plot which in turn increased the chapter count. Xiao Yan is an example of a MC with a straightforward goal. Scorned by the cancellation of an engagement, he swore to return the humiliation in a duel on a set date. It is perhaps... more>> because of this deadline that made the series take so many twists and turns in his quest to power up. Indeed, I often feel that the author regretted making the deadline being three years later and not five, because the numerous events seemed so crammed in.

The MC Xiao Yan is a likable MC whose frankness and noble character has caused a handful of beautiful women characters to be thrown into chaos. Despite this, the author has never made the MC gave in to his desires like Yun Che of "Against the Gods". He is not as stoic or immovable like Meng Hao of "I Shall Seal The Heavens", but loyal to one single love like Tang San of "Douluo Dalu".

A notable point that differentiates BTTH from other stories is the frank objectives and goal of the story (thus far translated). The antagonist who broke the engagement is fleshed out and not just some bogeyman, we know of her motivations and reasoning behind her actions.

Whereas Douluo Dalu's supporting cast is well built, there is pretty much none here as the MC travels mostly alone with his immortal spirit teacher. Indeed, the supporting cast of BTTH are the women who revolve in and out of the MC's life as they cross paths here and there. The reader might even question the author for making these fortuitous encounters female in nature as the MC isn't going to be shaken from his true love in the first place. Right the top of my head I can't think of any male friend of his age for the MC, the ones who know him well are much older and powerful figures.

Despite all the superfluous content, BTTH is a great example of a story that is driven by an obvious goal. It would be fine if the story ended with the duel, but the numerous loose ends meant the story will drag on for quite a bit. The quality of the writing and dialogue helps to break up the monotony and it remains an enjoyable read. <<less

Another XianXia novel who has a main character start out as tr*sh due to something happening while he was young.. Gets a mentor and becomes OP and falls in love..

While that doesn't sound appealing, I must stress that each of these XianXia novels have their own twists and turns, their own worlds and techniques protag's use. The world building in this novel is well done and I would say is on par with most IET worlds. The character building is a little bit weak but you can overlook it as... more>> the action scenes are well done and the important characters are well developed. <<less

3/10 (And only because im baised, honestly? A 2 is more correct)

Being honest here? The first 100~ chapters are probably what you want from this story, until the fight with Nalan Yanran after the deal of three years, after that, what do you expected? Its a wuxia! It will allways follow the same recipe; Xio yan fights a new enemy, loses, new jade beuty to his harem, fights back, and kills, repeat, if not a young master, a organization, if not an organization, a clan, ext. You can see... more>> the pattern.

Dont get me started on the characters, at first, quite interesting, but after 500+ chapters of always the same, they become dull as rocks, almost every girl MC mets, becomes a part of his evergrowing Harem that never stops (Angry at how the author did dirty to the best girls Yun Yun and Medusa they deserved better, much better)

it should have an even lower score, but being honest here, it was my first wuxia that started me on those stories, so I kinda have a soft spot for it, but im not fool, this is bad, but hey, good to read if you have NO other novel to read at the moment.

Pd; believe me, dont waste your time like I did reading 1500+ chapters, let me tell you its always the same, go and read an actual good story for god sake <<less

Honestly I would give it a 4.75/5
The story is good and the world build up is beautiful don't get me wrong but sometimes it gets boring. But still you will get hooked. If you like a little romance like me then you might not get much of it. The author does add romance but not as much romantic scenes. Nevertheless, it is a enjoyable piece of work

When I think back to BTTH, I have a hard time remembering specifics.

Not that I have trouble when I jog my memory of it, but how utterly simplistic and forgettable the pieces are. I would say this is an average cultivation novel, chasing after the tropes of the older and/or better series, but that would give this series more credit than it deserves. It copies many of the tropes in somehow, a worse way than obviously doing so, in that they were rehashed and made boring. The characters that seem... more>> interesting on introduction or multifaceted when presented end up being very simple, the plot rarely tries to push you to the end of your seat, and the cultivation elements lazily push you to the next trope so you can rinse and repeat.

I have a feeling there is a bland ending waiting for me if I bother to go back and trudge through the greater chunk of the series, but I have already been warned it is not worth my time, and that I would be better off just rereading a IET story or peeling some garbage CN off the new and upcoming section to relive the often more interesting first few arcs that CNs offer.

Overall, usual CN cultivation tropes but rather than harness, explore, or surpass them, BTTH crutches on them. Hard. After you read a few cultivation novels, you need more than that. <<less

It's a pretty standard novel but has all the issues Heavenly Silkworm Potato's novels have.

MC is smart, except when he is a complete idiot. Sometimes, he can figure out stuff from the smallest hints, the other time he asks the more experienced characters the most basic questions. Sometimes he ignores obvious clues in events just so the story can fit in, instead of being derailed by everyone figuring out the bad guys' obvious plot.

Later on, the author adds in some "surprise" cultivation levels, so that MC doesn't out-level the pacing... more>> of the story. "I know no one mentioned it before, but at the peak of this stage, there are 9 more mini-stages. And each one brings in massive differences in strength... but not when opponents face you, MC, so don't worry about it".

In general, everything gets way messier, the further down the line you are. Like the author couldn't keep up with the world he set up.

The cultivation, in general, is completely bland. There is basically no dao comprehension of any kind. They say there is, but it looks like all you need is more energy, maybe some item, and you're good. MC goes from zero to the peak of the world in like 25 years, whereas for other characters that seem to be a single seclusion, as it should be. Oh, except when MC lives through long periods in some kind of time compression, but then he is still the same person, even though he's like 400 instead of 30.

Officially there is no harem, except that a bunch of girls are all over MC for a long period of time, and MC is just kinda casually flirting with them, but they are not together, so no harem ;)

r*pe - iffy, but not egregious for a Chinese novel. I would say MCs reaction is above average there. <<less

First Chinese novel that I ever read, which actually got me into reading online webnovels. When this novel was published it was one of few which was where MC was not some OP dude. Nowadays most novel have too much systems and Supreme MC reincarnation theme. This is different as MC doesn't have any actual OP powers from the start, he literally works his way to the top. I did think that the ending was too rushed but still loved it anyways. The authors other two works are also quite... more>> good even though it has same theme.

Recommended for readers who don't mind generic setting WITHOUT - OP MC, QUICK POWERUPS, SYSTEMS.

decent start but I just hate novels that revolve around MC chasing after a woman. Till the end same plot MC chasing after a girl.
MC always picking a fight but always gets his arse saved by other people.
and the annoying thing is novel lasted 1600+ chapters but MC just aged 10yrs or less near the end
