Year 2056, in a city in the Yuan Jiang Su Jin area. On top of a ruined, shattered six story residential apartment sits a teenager wearing a combat vest, militaristic trousers, and alloyed battle boots. On his back is a hexagonal shield and equipped is a blood-shadow battle knife. He sits there silently on the edge of the roof. At this time, the sparkling sky was shining and there was a refreshing breath within the air that blew towards him. However, there was only silence within the ruined, deserted city, with an occasional howl that makes your heart skip a beat.

The characters are likeable except the very random, out of nowhere girlfriend. This is a pretty good read.

The MC though seems very incompetent and makes very s*upid decisions throughout the story.

Spoiler

He decided to take on his enemies when they were NOT alone but were with some very strong fighters that had nothing to do with his revenge. He then involved and killed all of those people while they were just defending themselves. He could have waited until his enemies were not on a mission with some other team, like they always did. But no he had to meddle with them right then for no reason.

Or his decision to steal off some powerful fighters he had no way to defeat. The author explained that this was because of his love for his brother, but it's not convincing because he could easily make money just by doing what he usually did. Of course he always survives because of plot armor.

[collapse]

The author has a bad habit of making the MC sound mentally handicapped by repeating everything he hears as questions:

A: Luo Feng, you're 18 now.

LF: I'm 18?

A: Yes, it's time to get a girlfriend.

LF: A girlfriend?

A: How about XYZ? She's quite the looker.

LF: XYZ?

...

This sort of writing happens so many times and it will drive you crazy.

You will also find many occasions where people will explain things in extreme details (even with unnecessary background info) to someone else while both of them clearly already know about this and there is zero need to say it out loud. Of course the MC is just around to overhear this. This is extremely cheap and weak writing. Someone like IET should be better than this:

Evil guy: Hehehe dear evil wife who is speaking with me on the phone, I am going to my secret hideout and I hid the key under the largest rock in front of the door! But even with the key no one can enter because there is actually a secret door which is to the left of the normal door! You can only enter through this secret door and not the normal door! Oh I'm just telling you this for no reason! If that brat I'm chasing knows this, I'll be screwed! But there's no way he can know this hahaha!

LF who overheard this: Sweet!

4/5 stars because of the bad writing. <<less

Honestly, I am disheartened to read the reviews, and I mean any reviews at all, that say that the author is either a) tr*sh, or b) should stop writing or c) anything demeaning.

If you don't like it, you don't have to comment. And if you really do have to comment, it should be about the story. Hating on the author and saying anything demeaning about them as a human is really low.

Also, I thought that people already knew that when they read anything FICTIONAL at all, they should not... more>> use reality to measure what happens in whatever they read (?). So, please stop imposing whatever views, bias, etc., on these novels and just read them without judging based on reality.

Anyway, I just want to say that reviews should not be used as a way to ATTACK on the author but to comment on the novel instead. Seriously, stop it. <<less

Simply amazing. This isn't your typical, pill concocting, OP AF, harem, kill every clan if they piss you off novel.

The MC is a smart, level headed person who knows how to fight and always has a plan. It starts off with just powerful clans from Earth, but then it slowly moves to the universe where we see sooo much more, from different species, universal kingdoms, and much more. Right now, MC is still young, has a wife and two sons, and he is fighting in a universal tournament, trying... more>> to make it to in top 1000 at the Star level. <<less

I usually don't read novels that take place on modern-day Earth but when I do, I read Swallowed Star. (Dos Equis reference) Jokes aside, this novel is more interesting than I thought it would be at first. Like most of IET's other novels, the protagonist starts off as a complete weakling. Then, he somewhat quickly becomes extremely extremely strong. One of the main differences from most of IET's other novels (like Stellar Transformations, Coiling Dragon, and The Desolate Era) is that the story is more like a sci-fi novel with... more>> superhumans (like Galactic Dark Net). I think this novel is really interesting and enjoy reading it. <<less

Plot: +1 - Good plot with many areas to explore.

Narration: Described with Earth in mind, which allowed better integration to the real world. All major decisions by the main characters were explained well. Oftentimes, many details were expected to be overlooked or forgotten, given the complexity of the novel with many storylines; however, these were explained as well. Fight scenes were well described.

The plots were coherent with no loose ends up to approximately Chapter 1100-1200. Starting Volume 28, Chapter 1213, the plot became absurd and boring with Duan Yong River... more>> Wu inheritance. 300 geniuses lined up to die because they wanted an inheritance despite having no chance of getting it. Power was too reliant on treasures with almost zero skills involved. The arc with Sector Beast was also unreasonable. The last 2 chapters wrapped everything up too quickly. Cultivation: Cultivation improvement was simple level-ups and understandings of what's required. No typical tribulations that always happened in this type of Xianxia genre. Leveling made sense and appeared realistic.

Time distribution: Time spent at high-level cultivations with supreme abilities was well distributed. Resurrection ability happened by mid-novel, not towards the end. Other novels spent only the last few dozen chapters on supreme beings. This novel offered insights into these abilities early, enabling the appreciation of what's beyond the end of other stories. The word "era" was translated too lightly. In other novels, an era meant 10-100 million years. This story's description of an era was confusing, which per my understanding was supposed to be only 10, 000 years. The passage of time was slow at first but towards the end, it grew to thousands of trillion years, yet the MC still was still 2 levels below the strongest.

No extreme persistent unrealistic quest for revenge or love lasted for the entirety of the novel. The story moved quickly from one storyline to the next.

Challenge: +1. The main character had many difficulties. In similar stories like this, it was difficult to demonstrate a powerful MC without making him overpowered. This novel did this very well. The MC didn't feel overpowered. There was always something more powerful to show that the MC was indeed lacking. He lost many fights. In the end, MC still had 2 more levels of power (Holy, Godly King) which he hadn't yet obtained. MC: +1. Consistent. Righteous. Not cruel. Though killing other races just because they belong to a different race didn't feel right yet this concept was a given in the story.

Romance: +1. Very little romance but that's a good thing. It's good to leave romance out of stories like this. The romance was boring, involved just a little to satisfy readers' curiosity and expectations. The novel didn't overdo it. No s*xual assault fantasies. No polygamy. No annoying persistent unending quest for love that lasted from beginning to end of the story. Well done.

Emotion: +0. Not too much. No real loss. More meaningful touching losses would have been better.

Comedy: +0. No humor

Overall: 4/6 - OK-Good.

What would be better is to have some humor in the story like A Will Eternal, and to have real losses to the MC, like loss of cultivation, loss of family members, loss of love life and to be regained through a different cultivation path or a different love interest. <<less

The story was interesting at the beginning but turned boring soon enough. It's a cliche with a MC that rides on plot armour. There's hardly any kind of anticipation or thrill for the story or how situations would unfold since you already know he's somehow gonna get his way and what he wanted on a gold platter served. He's the kind of MC who'd accidentally step on some SS grade battleship material from 50, 000 years ago.
Spoiler

oh wait he already did and the list goes on

[collapse]

If something bad would happen to luo feng which isn't even relatively bad compared to the other xuanhuan novels,

Spoiler

you'd find him immediately dumped on with treasures compensated in the next few chapters by finding some secret treasure trove or becoming the disciple of the most powerful undying being and getting all his inheritance on top of a OP AI that can do mostly anything etc etc

[collapse]

the translation is kinda stiff and inflexible too with quite a few grammatical mistakes or maybe the writing of the author itself wasnt smooth enough.

The role of the family and romance in the novel is incredibly s*upid and nonexistent and feels like it's just there to fill gaps, you'd find the MC uselessly blabbering about them so much which makes you wonder where the heck is the "caring protagonist" Tag for I could've avoided this cliche story all together. The unnecessary one chapter plots on his family and love interest are annoyingly dumb.
Spoiler

the world's in a calamity? But lets find my parent's relatives (who they don't meet much and aren't even mentioned later on) since I've got enough authority now.

Also his 'romantic' times with Xu xin are quite cringe, there's too much of them every where that a "romance" Gerne included wouldn't be out of place.

Their moments together aren't even emotional or deep but like a bad scripted show. Both of them just have a cardboard like personality when they're together.
[collapse]

The chapters on his family and love interest are so useless that you could just skip through them and not find anything missed or relevant.

In conclusion, dropped.

I personally love this novel but I can understand why people might have problems with it. If you want a modern day xuanhuan/xianxia and don't get bothered by small issues here and there, then you'll probably love this. If you like to look for every small plot hole, repetitive plot point, trope and so on, then why are you even reading web novels? Lmao.

Incredibly underrated piece of work. I Eat Tomatoes is known for his cultivation stories but this one melds Science Fiction into it really well. It's a typical cultivation story, as that's what you'd expect from IET, but the Science Fiction and other tweaks to the tried and tested genre that we all love that are within this story really have elevated it to a whole new level. It's most certainly in the top 3 of IET's work. And at the time of writing this review, is one of the best... more>> ongoing translations available to read. <<less

Quite a interesting novel of a person with... Stuff doing things and saving mankind and blah blah blah.

After a while IET 'Expands' his world and after that it turns into a bit of mess but at the same time interesting to read.

Um... I didn't notice that there were more Swallowed Star chapters until I noticed when I checked... So... Yea... Back to the bas**ent of reading I go!

Really good. It's pretty much similar to The Desolate Era but on a different plane though. The start might seem weird since it gives a feel of a futuristic sci-fi novel compared to other wuxia novels out here, in case you've read a lot of those. eg: there's no pill/dan making etc etc. (It was a refreshing change indeed!) But you get used to it quite soon. The romance is well... ummm.. negligible. IET sucks at cheesy romance lets face it lol. Its on a very mature level though I'll... more>> give you that. Spoiler:It gets better once he leaves earth in order to save it.

The main story gets better & better and broader as it progresses and makes you wonder if you really are reading the same novel. Heck I never knew the thought of travelling through space would make me feel so good since I always thought it'd be like the old star trek/wars movie crap which I never got used to with the annoying music which is ringing in my mind as I'm writing this. Nevertheless, this is one worth reading and deserves to be on your reading list. <<less

It starts off reasonably interesting, but the MC quickly outgrows the planet and starts dealing with interstellar stuff, which is of more generic quality.

The threat to Earth has totally vanished in current chapters, so there is no motive except self interest at this point. Both his wife and brother have apparently limitless money making potential, and could seemingly just hire mercenaries stronger than the MC to protect it.

This is one of those easily digestible novels: not too extreme in terms of character or plot, but interesting. As I'm not the intended audience (mainland Chinese), I deducted a star because of the often present nationalism. The technology and battles are fun, but suffers from too much exposition. As a pro translated novel reader, I am very good at skimming all BS to find dialogue. It makes a normally 5-6 minutes-to-read chapter around 2 minutes, and nothing of value was lost. Would recommend.

Probably my favourite IET work along with CD and DE; then again most of his works start out interesting.. Like the modern twist and my only problem is the super slow translation speed. (It is like 1/3 or 1/4 of other "hot" novels which have a new release one per day)

A very nice scifi xianxia blend I would not recommend it to everyone though as there is a lot of racism, Chinese supremacy and eugenics propaganda you have to ignore to enjoy the novel.

An alternate timeline where a Covid virus prolifically spreads around Earth and killed about a third of all life. But what it did not kill made all lifeforms a heck of a lot stronger. Swallowed Star follows the diligent Luo Feng, equipped with the basic protagonist perks of: accelerated growth, lucky chances & a rare ability. Making the early monster hunting and PvP enjoyable, although feeling rather lacking. Until the real levels of cultivation are revealed. Which honestly scales to an absurd degree, with everything eventually being measured in km,... more>> light years & eras.

But before then there's a great deal of focus on VR, allowing Luo Feng to avoid any real danger for a great majority of the story. Cultivating and partaking in trials to get stronger, with the occasional killings; as we embark on a journey into space, the wider universe and beyond. Unfortunately there are very few interesting recurring characters throughout that journey, as the ladies (especially love interests) rapidly become irrelevant, whilst all the guys are out there simping or snitching.

In the end the story becomes a predictable race for the MC to raise his cultivation to the appropriate level, in order to save the world/universe/whatever and unlock the "true endgame" we'll likely never see. <<less

At first, I felt that this really is an interesting book. Actually, it really is interesting if not taking into consideration the way the MC was written. The character was fine at first, but it just became twisted for me as the story goes on. The main character felt so shallow.

i just finished reading this story, and after reading the ending, I'm very confused.

overall, I really enjoyed this story. The MC is pretty OP, and there are many many secrets involved in this universe, which are slowly revealed. You get some hints to it along the way, but the details in this world are really fleshed out, and the journey is quite entertaining. The MC is able to broaden his horizons slowly step by step, and he encounters stronger and stronger enemies, but is still able to handle them every... more>> time. He is quite loyal and set on his motives and morals, and also only has one wife, though polygamy is extremely common in the universe. In any case romance is not a big deal at all in this story, so honestly nothing is really important besides the MC's cultivation. I do like how close the MC is with his teachers, and there are a bunch of really good and strong relationships that appear in the story, which is quite endearing.

i was quite invested in this story all the way until the end. This story has such an abrupt ending. The last chapter is really long and the author reveals some big secrets and big developments, but then it just stops with the MC on his way there, halfway through his growth. No satisfaction at all here. Is there a sequel? Do we just assume that he becomes successful in his growth? I don't really even know what to think right now. <<less
