The Death Mage Who Doesn’t Want a Fourth Time

Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

This novel is too unrealistic. Horrific events happen to the main character but they don't seem to affect him in any lasting way. He's still a pacifist who refuses to harm all but the most evil people. A town tortured and burned his mother and all he does is take away their walls without hurting anyone. It's ridiculous to read about or look up to such a "hero". In reality, no one who has lived his life would be so kind and such a kind person could be easily killed... more>> no matter how strong he is. <<less

Promising start, but quickly devolves into your average isekai with a touch of edge. The MC gets super powerful, super quick, and if that weren't enough, the author takes every opportunity to shove your stereotypical harem characters at the baby.

The baby.

Because the MC is 1-2 when the some of the early harem members think about how they like him and/or want to have his babies.

If harem with a toddler is your thing, here's a summary of what harem members he's gotten so far from where I've read:

Spoiler

We have:

  • Two pieces of bikini and leotard armour haunted by spirits that the MC conveniently finds in a dungeon. To be fair, it takes a while for the spirits to gain a human form, so I'll give the author that much.
  • A 290 year-old ghoul who apparently looks like a pre-teen human girl with grey skin (that's right, the author put in an "I'm actually 9000 years old!" loli). Also, ghoul women look exactly like human women aside from skin colour but the ghoul men look like monsters with the head of lions. Another boring trope.
  • Multiple other ghouls of various ages really desperate to get pregnant by the MC (one of whom is a former prostitute)
  • Another former prostitute, but a high-ranking vampire this time
  • A Titan princess ghost
  • And more to come! I assume, because if a new character is introduced with particular emphasis on their b**bs and ass, you can assume she'll become a harem member.
[collapse]

Stuck through it for a while because I was curious about what was going to happen with him, the other reincarnators, and his relations with "people" (i.e. humans, elves, dwarves), but dropped it because of a couple things being the last few straws:

Spoiler
  • The first reincarnator is a completely irredeemable a**hole. I'd even go as far as to say he's worse than the other heroes in The Rising of the Shield Hero - at least they f*ck up because they're just dumbasses. This dude literally goes around and r*pes and mu*ders people as he pleases to get sh*t then attack the MC.
  • Princess instantly becomes a harem member. At least the MC is 7 at this point instead of 1. Amazing.

It's possible that the author turns things around and doesn't have any more ridiculously 1D as*hole reincarnators (we get a brief intro to the next three and they seem okay at least), but I just don't have that much faith in this story anymore. It's your stereotypical power fantasy harem isekai with a dash of monster girls and a dash of revenge p*rn à la ShieldBro or hell, Nidome no Yuusha.

Except the revenge p*rn isn't even fun because some of the revenge targets are sympathetic (ex. Heinz, who's actively doing his best to atone for his mistakes since the moment he made them, and the reincarnators who aren't a**holes and didn't know that MC was the Undead being experimented on back on Origin). And yet the MC still wants to mu*der Heinz and his friends, and the MC still expects the other reincarnators to get on their knees and apologize profusely for the crime of... not being mind readers?

The MC isn't being written as the most sane person, sure, so it might be a deliberate narrative choice and he's going to undergo character development and let go of his hatred.

Or not, because again, this author relies waaaay too much on stereotypical tropes.

[collapse]

non-spoiler-y tl;dr: I don't trust the writing to treat certain plot points they way they should be anymore because there's been way too many stereotypical isekai tropes and plot shoved in. <<less

This is one of the best novels shown on this site, and easily my favourite novel. The plot is interesting, the world is fleshed out and well designed, the characters are interesting and unique.

There are a few things that can turn people away, these are not concerns for me, but may be of concern to some of you who are looking through the comments to get our opinion of the story, so I am going to try to be as unbiased as possible.

Firstly, yes there is a harem, a large... more>> one, yet unlike other harem novels, the characters are unique, all have their interesting personality quirks, and are memorable. Also, this isn't a "Every single female character falls in love with the MC", just a lot of them. There are still plenty of female characters who are interested in other people.

Secondly, the MC's power level. Let me get this straight, He is op, but not overwhelmingly so from the beginning. If you read the Synopsis and notice the words "death magic" and "enormous mana pool." You would come to the conclusion that the MC is op as balls from the start. You would be incorrect. True, if he had, for instance, fire magic, he probably would be op, capable of annihilating large cities with ease. But he has death magic, which has very little in terms of offensive ability. At most he can kill bugs or germs, create golems and weak undead (about as dangerous as a racoon). Death magic has a lot of benefits for "home life, " raising minions, buffing allies and minions, and some defensive spells, but nothing for offence, aside from being able to use poison and disease. At least, not for the first few books. Don't get me wrong, he is strong in many ways, and can do things that nobody else can, but, at least at the start, he is not "op." (in the later chapters he is VERY strong.)

Next is the Mc's personality. A lot of people don't understand his personality, A certain event, Explained in spoiler tab below, combined with his shitty past lives, results in him..... going insane. Yes, the MC is insane, but not in the ways you are thinking. He doesn't run around massacring people, even when we readers expect him to. (also explained in spoiler tab. Instead what he does is fixate on people/things/concepts. Let me put it this way, when a person in most novels gets strong, and someone is a d*ck to them, often a fight ensues, and the as*hole is killed. This MC would not do that, he even gets cheated out of some money, and forgets about the incident soon after. However, don't mistake him to be "naive." If he decides to kill somebody, regardless of who it is, or their background, then there is nothing you can do to persuade him otherwise. Whether that person is an emperor, noble, adventurer, hero, criminal or s*ave, if he decides you deserve to die, then he will work towards killing you. A certain incident (again, spoiler tab), often makes people think he is a "typical kind Japanese protagonist." I will tell you this now, nobody who walks down the path of being a Cosmic horror is a "typical kind MC."

Spoiler

Ok, the incident in question is basically at the start of the story. He, a Dhampir, is born in a nation that hates vampires. His mother is ratted out by villagers, captured by adventurers and vampire hunters, and is tortured and burned to death. He escapes, returning a few months later. The adventurers and Vampire hunters are way too strong for him, and have left, leaving the villagers who ratted his mother out. The hunters who ratted her out were killed, and the villagers who stood there and watched and cheered on the spectacle were punished.

Now most people expected him to massacre the entire village in vengeance, instead he didn't kill any of them (again, aside from the hunters who personally ratted out his mother). Instead, he turned the mayor's house, the Adventurer's guild building, the defensive wall around the town, and the fields growing crops and fruit for wine (the towns main export) into golems, and made them all run away from the town. Now, most people view this as too kind, but I love this vengeance. I am so bored of MC's simplifying their vengeance by killing everyone. This vengeance set the village back decades. The wall had to be rebuilt to protect the town from monster attacks, the mayor had to wait for it to be rebuilt to start rebuilding his house, the crops for the year were mostly ruined, and the orchards would take years to regain. He also spoiled all the wine in the village, and killed all the bacteria that would help ferment the alcohol, so that also would take a long time to fix. As the final nail in the coffin, the mayor was about to be promoted for helping end a "dangerous Dhampir." That promotion was canceled. All in all, I found it to be one of the most satisfying acts of revenge I ever seen, in books, movies or manga.

"It could have been great" 4/10
Redflag:
Spoiler

The main character is a dhampir.

[collapse]

Too many genres and too many tropes, though I blame the author writing talent equally. For a feel-good slice of life, I find the complicated and dark intro unnecessary and a letdown. It was like being promised the heartstopping, insurance-not-guaranteed, fatally thrilling ride - only to be shown after that 200 meters high nosedive is a traffic jam. And you don't even get to crash!! Ofc, it could have been premature of a review, but 40~ chapters (3 volumes worth) in and I still have to wait for satisfaction? If you wish to read it, avoid my mistakes and start from the 2nd or 3rd volume. Wait till there's actual development before you turn back and read the 1st volume (or don't, I skimmed 60-80, it doesn't get better). Better yet, read slime tensei or dead march. They're better example of this type of novels.

Spoiler

P/s: And that's why I was pissing on the author's writing talent. That dark episode of parenticide could have been a f*cking flashback, gradually introduced to expand and explain his f*cked up attitude, with the added bonus of not f*cking up the story and not f*cking with readers expecting intense dark and gritty stuff, or at least tie both aspects of the story closer together and make actual sense of it.

People seem to think a bloodthirsty MC is better... Why is that? Well for one the MC would have been able to let loose and slaughter all that has wronged them...

Well Frick that! Van-sama may be emotional but the actions he takes are really given some thought, ... more>>
Spoiler

his revenge against the ones who killed his mother while not immediate, were fulfilled, with the exception of one...

[collapse]

And the village, why do people think slaughtering a village is justified? They were not the ones responsible, the only sin they committed was agreeing with the perpetrators, what Van did to them was way better. No casualties but devastating none-the-less, and with no way of knowing the culprit, they cannot direct their hatred at him...

Regarding the novel as a whole, it's not entirely exciting but takes cause and effect into consideration. Not much cliche and popular themes, action imho is just about right (idk about other peeps) but still engaging.

For one that has harem as a tag nothing overly s*xual happens (bcuz he still young), the females aren't completely gone on the MC, have their own personalities, and aren't treated as collectibles or background music.

The males aren't garnishes, they don't act like they want to have the same things the MC has, making it look like the MC is luckier than them...

The background characters are not forgotten or overly used, they surface in future chapters.

The main antagonist is a dck, but has his reasons for being so, even if they make him even more of a dck.

Good attention to detail, one cannot completely hate all of the MCs enemies, because just like dck god, they have their reasons, and most side characters are actually dependable and the heroes are not all actually deplorable...

And van? He was never normal to begin with
Spoiler

his soul is made out of pieces from four dead heroes, and was abused, experimented on, and was treated like he was disposable by the dck god

[collapse]
but despite that, he still has the ability to care... Honestly if he acted any other way, I would have dropped this novel like a bag full of roaches in an open fire...

Overall, it's not perfect, but whole world's better than most isekai stories... <<less

Novel had a perfect start about revenge, but as it is usual, he lost the desire rapidly.

This novel suffers from the same disease as many other novels, which is the incapacity of the author to follow his own premises. He says he will not do something, and does it.

Spoiler

It is incredibly annoying how the author keeps introducing new character every other chapter, and does not sees how it destroys the world. As it is on chapter 120, we are expected to remember at least 30 names from his close allies, which by the way have different races and abilities.

[collapse]

I guess what really puts me down about novels like these, who introduces so many characters, is that they are incapable of developing those same characters, and therefore, are only seen as fillers. There so many good characters introduced at the beggining, but the author does not keep them around and only mentions them once in a while. That really kills a novel for me. <<less

A very good story, at first I thought it was a bit slow but then the volumes got much better.

I like that the characters are not abandoned, as is the case in other stories.

The development of the world is very good, very well explained.

... more>> I don't like what it has to do with food, but it's not something I do that's completely disappointing so it's okay.

I like how each character keeps his personality and the different personalities that exist.

Maybe there are some characters that I wish would die but it's part of the charm of the story.

That's why it deserves its 5 stars and I recommend it for reading.

Sorry about my English if you find any mistakes.

I see a lot of people giving this a 1 star and only reading up to chapter 20-30. Although, I agree with them that the beginning was pretty boring and the MC then almost made me give up this novel, but after, I forget what chapter, the novel picks up and introduces cool stuff and goes into great detail, and overall just get better and better. So for those reading the first dozen chapters, bear through them until the MC establishes his city and it gets more and more interesting... more>> after that.

I actually miss-cl**ked and gave it 5 stars instead of a solid 4 that I think it deserves. There are some things that would make this story more interesting. For example, less otaku stuff, a bit less "Japanese food, the greatest" stuff, more character development (making them more realistic instead of anime characters that they are modeled after), less appeal to 15 year olds, and more appeal towards 18+ year olds. Those are the negatives that made the review 4 stars instead of 5.

Some positives are: World building in detail, kingdom building, MC's powers, side character development shown in detail. Translation quality is also pretty good. <<less

So a lot of people have complained about the MC not being a revenge obsessed maniac who kills everyone. I can understand that, it can be very cathartic to see someone get their @$$ handed to them for all of the bad things they've done, but the problem is what happened to the MC and why it happened are all things that an adult would be able to understand. And that's the most important thing to remember, he's still an adult. Sure he's a pretty broken one but rather than... more>> being a story about "revenge at all costs" it makes the story better by saying "fight like hell to protect everyone you call family".

That's a good story. That's something people can get behind. That's something that should be universal.

If you want an edgelord MC who is so obsessed with revenge and killing that it sounds like a chunni diary of someone with legitimate anger issues this story is not for you.

10/10 Grade A waifu leveling simulator. <<less

A bit odd to get in to, but surprisingly great if you can get past all the weird interactions the MC has. I specifically like how the story has a frequent recurring tradition of side stories, explanations from how the characters surrounding the MC view him and what he accomplishes. In short, what is treated as completely normal when reading from the MC's perspective raises quite a few eyebrows in the side stories.

Translation quality is top-notch.

BEHOLD!!! THIS ONE OF A KIND REINCARNATION STORY THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE USUAL TROUPE AND A PROTAGONIST THAT BEING FORCED TO HARSH AND TERRIBLE FATE. BUT WOULD NOT LET IT SHOVE INTO HIS FACE AND ALWAYS MOVE FORWARD, ERASING THINGS THAT COME ABOUT HARMING HIS HAPPINESS!!!

Always motivated about this with good grammars, nice plot, moving info and details, fantastic characters and amazing storyline. Worth not to be confused with all the things mushed up as it tells you a lot of things regarding the world and how everything works with semblance to game elements.

MC having 40 years compressed to each world on Earth and Origin is not having change but merged to his young self on the new world he is in Lambda.
A mixture of Youjo Senki/Overlord/Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken. Like tragedy, unfortunate fate, revenge, blood, dark, kingdom building, OP powers and differentiate characters sides.

Valuating much effort towards his interest and hard work even though in such a young age. Determined unlike anyone else to revived his dead mom a beautiful Dark Elf who is now a Spirit that always been with her son as a fragment of her is kept near to her son all the times.

Discrimination is always there as him also part of that being a Dhampir, half Dark Elf/half Vampire. Yet not letting the way things are as him going over the top. Harem of course is there with beautiful OPPAIS but not humans of course but like him nonhumans but to the humans see them as monsters.

A Marvelous Story with an Overwhelming Protagonist that Offset changing the Way things are that are seriously Wrong in that World. Not gonna let that God put him in there into such Unfortunate events. He's going for the First time in life Happiness and Anyone who dared harm, intrude, mess up his Happiness only OBLIVION awaits with no second, third or fourth times gonna happen.

The main MC has been through a lot of crap and he get reincarnated goes through more crap goes through some more dies and has a rough start has a pretty good feeling and is interesting to read kid acts like a hybrid of adult and child. The kid meets a ghoul who he saves invited back to their village meets the ghouls daughter who states intentions of having him be her second husband after she gets pregnant, he helps her get pregnant with a fertility device he creates and while he feels discomfort over it he resigns himself to just being a "child". And yes after the pregnancy she still shows interest in him afterwards as a love interest.

So our MC is a willing cuckold :/

i Honestly like this novel, it's not without faults but it's better than most Isekai out there, the biggest issue is the age of the protagonist and you'll have to brace you bridge of disbelief to let that slide but i've seen worse so I could roll with it.

The protagonist is pretty logical, he don't slaughter people just because he can, he save people when he can and he kills people that he think will be more problem then they're worth, and that is rare in most japanese LN the... more>> character suffer from messiah syndrome and want to save everyone and hurt no one. One chapter is pretty long compared to average, so the chapters that I've read should be plenty enough to determine the style and potential.

1. Initially the author tried to be in depth in world and character building, but soon after he contradicts that style by spouting nonsense and a complete 180° change of MC's personality, which is an instant turn off for most readers.

Imagine seeing John Wick becomes a complete sissy and doesn't kill the villains who killed his loved ones. That's the exact situation and personality our MC has.

Spoiler

MC's mother got tormented in public, laughed at, and burned alive at stake. MC even immediatly develop mental corruption skill from level 1 straight to 10 by learning what happened to his mother. By this point readers are all excited for a massive revenge plot, right? But no, just a few chapter later, MC turned into a completely soft hypocrite. He doesn't kill the villagers who discriminated his non-human mother but just punish them by destryong the village's farm and walls...

[collapse]

2. The age progression is very slow and the illogical sense of morality is messed up even if it's a fantasy. The MC is still under 1 year old baby for f*ck sake. But the author makes almost all the woman he encountered to fall for him. The reason for this is a passive undead charm skill as a death mage, but wtf? Imagine a nearly 300 years old lolibaba who already has grandchildren and usually had s*x with huge beastman-like male feeling dokidoki against a baby with less than 1 year of age.

3. Many more too mention, but from what I've read, I can only conclude this novel as something that is written by amateur young teenager boy. The writing style is better than most other average isekai, but is still a mess the more I read it. <<less

First off, love the length of each chapter (long), so there is more to read than it appears. For reference, 26 chapters was Book 1.

Just wanted to write that I think the comparison to Overlord is weird. I read it more like Tensei Slime than Overlord.

For me personally, any novel that you compare to Overlord is gonna be (much) worse, but I see them as different styles. Compared to Slime, which it is similar to, I like the thought process of MC and logical nature of the book. Helps that... more>> the translation of this is cleaner/better. <<less

This is a very good example of a novel taking a cliche premise and doing its best to build a novel idea around it. I would say as of where I am in the novel, it has both succeeded and failed.

There is one and only blemish on this novel, and it is its original setup. If it were not for this one problem that is never explained in any way to the audience how one man can be this dumb and be put in such a high and mighty position,... more>> this novel would be probably my favorite without any doubt.

Spoiler

The story seems like your average reincarnation story of a heroic but self hating MC, who lived a fairly tragic and sad life bordering on almost constant child abuse and neglect, dying while attempting to save others. Unfortunately when he and the rest of the group picked up by this "God" are being divvied up their shares of good luck, our MC gets snubbed because of a clerical error and gets nothing, which would be fine if that meant only not getting unnaturally lucky or cheat powers, but it also meant that anything bad could and did happen to him in his reincarnated life. He lives that Life and dies in the most tragic ways possible in that sate and when he gets back to god of middle management, Rodcorte, he is rightfully angry. But instead of apologizing, that god decides it is a better idea to double down on his mistakes while refusing to acknowledge that he is right to be angry at being literally and absolutely not figuratively tortured for the full length of his short life and finally mu*dered by people who hoped and expected to be his friends, and forcefully reincarnate our MC again in yet another world, but this time, he not only gets no luck or blessing, but is instead cursed by that god because reasons.

[collapse]

and all this happens because god doesn't know how to read. The worst part is that he truly does not see how it is his fault. When others are explained the story, he tells it truthfully without missing any points in it and expects that others would obviously side with him on the matter. As long as you can get through the set up of this novel, which I would say is the first 5 or so chapters of getting the MC to his "Starting point" of his journey, it is a great read. Somewhat long chapters, beautiful world building, many characters, both complex, and extreme one notes. And a main character who seems like the normal extra kind iseki MC, but has an interesting thought process and character progression. <<less

The world building is great it's better than a lot of light novels I'd say. But the characters are pretty much boring and shallow as far as I know and don't have any spec of common sense to relate to them.

The begining wasn't so bad until he found those devils things started to change to the worst and the drag of him being an kid is too long plus giving him harem at the age of 3 isn't smart idea.

The MC has a poor life, he first gets abused by his uncle, then abused by some god, then held captive worse than an animal for many years, only to be killed by his former classmates. But those peaceful days will not last. The MC's mother gets killed (you could see that flag from miles away) ; she gets tortured and burned alive. The MCs mind gets corrupted, he swears revenge. But he is too weak. He levels up and comes back. With his new found power and minions he goes to destroy the city's wall's so that the citizens have to fend against wild animals and also spoils all the fermenting wine so that the city loses its production. Mmmm... my review is quite average. MC is dark at the beginning but later on is completely different and that change is well made. Story line is awesome so many different paths are available it has good potential. But if your looking for romance, harem you have to wait some more but it's deathly intriguing how it's going to happen. Fan service x@x appears here and there.
