Nidome no Yuusha (WN)

Ukei Kaito fought a desperate struggle in order to fulfill his role as a summoned hero. He defeated the Demon Lord and saved the very world, only to meet an end filled with betrayal. The companions that he’d trusted throughout his journey betrayed him and killed him by sticking a blade through his chest.

It was then that he swore to himself.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would no longer so rigidly cling to the concept of “faith/believe.”

He swore that, if given another chance, he would dedicate himself to enacting the most atrocious act of revenge possible.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would do things right.

「I’ll kill every single last one of you… I swear it…」

And so, he died, leaving behind not but a series of menacing last words — but his story had yet to end. A voice resounded through his head and informed him that there was more to his fate than what lay beyond the grave.

Even kaifuku jutsushi no yarinaoshi is better than this story at the start as MC has or makes a reason for revenge.

In this story MC goes on torturing and killing spree without any reason like a mad person. Well in my eyes these kind of where MC either takes revenge to excessive heights or where MC just acts like a a timid or anti-hero type character clearly shows how degenerate is the mind of authors.

The synopsis is really a trap, when you read it you expect some action and a psycho anti-hero with a personality twist, but there is none only a MC with twisted brain and degraded intelligence, he's brainless and there's no logic in the story much less any ingenious development.

From the start it was fuc*ked up, the first action the MC did when he traveledback in time was attack/torture the princess (future betrayer) and her guards without much thinking about the consequences nor did he finished her after the torture... he... more>> just made a potential ennemy that was not going to take action against him any time soon, he could've even took advantage of the situation if he had just used just a little bit of his brain but unfortunately he got none the MC is complete moron.

This novel is reallt too overrated, that tricked me too...

In short, it's a story for young teens, or maybe not because these kind of stories may hinder your intelligence. <<less

Edgy, but good-sort of edgy.

There's not much to say outside of what's already visible in the synopsis. Just, don't expect it to be a masterpiece by virtue of it's moral depth or character interaction. This is a 'tr*sh' story that can only be enjoyed by being awfully blazé about it.

Spoiler

TL quality is good too, although not superb. CardboardTL has some sort of fixation on using bad-form English at place, even doubling down when a mistake it pointed out. I'm personally dropping the story at v2c22 because I was getting bored, but it was a close-thing when I was still debating keeping or flushing it. CardboardTL doubling-down on using 'could care less' instead of 'couldn't care less' was really the straw that broke the camel's back. It completely broke the flow and immersion for me.

Well, the MC has gone thru some painful sh*t and has become a totally sadistic psycho. I admit that the story is well written and it's satisfying when someone gets his revenge, but it's just too dark and cruel for my taste. The MC punishes people for what they didn't done yet but would eventually do. If it’s justified or not is debatable. Literally everyone is an A**hole and the MC and his companion are no exception.

Maybe I'm not qualified to judge this novel, since I can't stand depictions of... more>> cruelty and when innocent bystanders get dragged in someone’s revenge, but well this is a review and it tends to be subjective. Therefor 3/5. <<less

Maybe what I'm about to say is a dilemma, Nidome no Yuusha is one of my favorite LN since it got a very different taste than other novel which is about OP character and harem and so on. I really like it when the MC vow for revenge and do everything to finish it.

However there is a downside, in the first gameplay, the MC is betrayed by the kingdom and he died. And the god give him a new game+ which start all over again from the beginning and he... more>> swore revenge to everyone who betray him (which is everyone on the first gameplay). The thing is, isn't that just like killing someone who didn't know anything? I mean come on, the world is reset to beginning you know... which mean the people who betray MC didn't do anything and didn't know about what they will do yet (Except for the princess since she already plot everything from the start to betray the MC).

Its like "Hei you, you betray me in the past life so I will kill you in this life", seriously it's better if the author just make the MC vow for revenge in his past gameplay, that will make more sense

Well if anyone trying to read it don't expect too much since this novel is pure to fulfill MC desire for revenge to someone who betray him in the past life.

Still it's enjoyable and frustrating at the same time to read for me. <<less

First. 4 of 5 stars is mainly because these kinds of stories seem too much shock value and less good Punisher of Marvel Netflix style.

I went in thinking it was more like Punisher going out to get a good vengeance run on his hated enemies that hurt him bad.

Not quite.

... more>> I'd put our MC as about say 98% Punisher. So the story of rampaging vengeance is there. At times it seems the MC meanders around and doesn't get any where in his vengeance upon his foes and betrayers.

Then you get a few chapters where we see more insight (back flashes) to WHY he has such a hard on for hurting his old 'friends'.

THOSE are the juiciest moments that give me reason why I love to hate hate. And why we still love a good Punisher storyline idea.

a**holes are there to be reamed and boy does our MC has a whole bunch that will be needing to be reamed. Though, like the Punisher, he does have a line he has discovered he won't cross. Lest he winds up being as twisted as the tw*ts he wants to crush.

I do look forward to the occasional translation. It seems to be slow going. But worth it for the wait.

Here's to more getting medieval on their arses. <<less

Basically, this is a revenge story about a guy who hates the world and want to watch it burn. But the problem is that his life when he's betrayed is only skimmed over before he's sent back in time. That's why I just can't feel the satisfy feeling when he enacts his revenge and sometimes even think that he went a little overboard with it.

Reading the description makes you expect an edgy MC gee main character. However the story is written surprisingly well, instead of being edgy the main character is just a sadist.

I definitely recommend reading this even if you are scared of edgy mary sues.

Ok yeah there is a lot of edgy betrayal in the beginning. Hopefully we get past that

5/5 for now

Interested by the possible romance through hatred that isn’t as common in Novels, but the constant torture that seemed to go on and on just got old and unenjoyable. It’s okay to be edgy, but my god this comes off as some uncomfortable and embarrassing amount of edge. I finally found myself giving up on the series because it really didn’t feel rewarding to read. I can see why people like it but it really doesn’t have a lot of charm or positive characteristics about it.

The more I read the worse it gets. In the beginning it was nice with refreshing setting and then it deteriorated a lot. Waste of time. Confusing perspective while reading all the time and focusing on less interesting elements as story slowly drags on. Skip this one :)

First things first, I am reviewing not only on the novel itself, but also on an issue with the translations itself.

Despite the rating, I need to address that I absolutely love this concept and this series. The story of a young Japanese boy or girl, being summoned to another world is very common nowadays, with the Isekai tag. Many series try to be creative with it, especially those who go back to the genre's roots and go into another direction with it. This series really caught me off guard at... more>> its execution, concept and story. A revenge story centering around the MC who got betrayed by the people who he trusted the most, especially in an unfamiliar place. Safe to say, after discovreing and reading the manga, I wanted to see more than what it currently offered, especially since the manga would take more time to update. But it pains me to say how all my drive and motovation of this series has gone when I read the novel.

This mainly stems from the irrational way the translations had released it. The first 23 chapters were absolutely, beautifully done by "Isekai Summon Me!" translations. But apparently they dropped it and "FoxTeller" had picked it up. At first I noticed how weird the situation was and if I missed some info. Turns out, I did. Probably 7 chapters worth of it or less.

Spoiler

A minor spoiler, but really confused me. They were in the middle of supplying poison gas into the Boss room via a small hole. The next chapter immediately described a battle with an orc, which I presumed to be the boss. The rest og thr story went smoothly until the change in translator again.

[collapse]

For some reason, they decided to continue at chapter 30, which I'm guessing is the third chapter of Vol 2. Then dropped it at chapter 5, part 2. Next, it was done by "CardboardTL" who decided to skip 3 chapters and start at the ninth chapter of the same volume. At this point, I was at the edge of dropping this series and it was when I noticed that chapter 11 was missing, yet the rest was complete. As you can see, as of writing this, I was at that chapter before dropping it. Looking at the rest, it seems that they did a pretty good job until dropping it before being picked up by "wn404" and them dropping it as well afterwards. Currently, this novel is being translated by "Light Novels Translations" and I don't know if they too skipped some chapters when they picked it up.

Lastly, I would like to quickly inform that I don't know on the situations of the individual translators and so I can't really say that they're lazy or incompetent. But I will say, to those looking to read this: If you like this concept of revenge isekai, this novel is an interesting read, but also read at your own risk. Be sure to have a big heart to forgive the missing chapters/information as this may confuse you at times. Regardless, I hope you would enjoy it more than I did!

Edit: Before anyone flames me, I'd rather you inform me of why there are missing chapters. Thank you. <<less

While this novel is certainly edgy enough, it is woefully lacking in world building and character building. It's like the author was trying to put his homicidal thoughts on paper rather than trying to write a coherent narrative.

Firstly the MC lacks any real personality, we are told that he was a kind person whose kindness was taken advantage of, but this fails to come through in the writing. It would have been nice to see him struggle with his inherently good nature and his rage but that is never seen.... more>> He is a complete sociopath from beginning to end. This tends to stand out as a missed opportunity as the MC never seems to be in any sort of danger as all of his plans are pulled off perfectly without a single slip-up such as, for example, granting a crying villain mercy only for them to turn the tables and force him into a fight on their terms.

On that note: the novel fails to really develop the villains, they are depicted as almost cartoonishly evil as their actions don't seem to relate to any sentient thought or purpose other than to try and be as evil as possible. We also don't see them actually surprised or shocked at their fate, we are TOLD they they believe their actions are justified, but they don't seem at all shocked when the MC comes by, they end up sounding angered that their evil deeds are foiled rather than the surprised reaction of someone with a skewed moral compass.

Lastly, I'd say it's gravest sin is how it fails to really adequately explain what the hell is going on. The MC's power is an absolute mess that REALLY needs to be streamlined as half the novel is an incoherent rambling of an exposition on his bag full of swords and what each one does which ends up ridiculously convoluted. Trying to keep track of it ends up being half the battle of trying to get anything out of this novel. Ironically, by comparison to the lengthy rambling about the MC's swords, nothing else is explained such as how the MC is able to overpower the villains, it explains the weaknesses but never tells how their power works as a whole to give it this new information a sense of context. This hyper-focus on a MC who lacks personality only makes this stand out more. <<less

One word:

tr*sh.

I seek revenge, I want them to suffer, that's good for revenge, but...

... more>> I've been hunted over a year before I got killed.

When I get back in time (and in life) I start my revenge asap, just to get hunted again?

wtf?! Before, the MC had over 3 years before he got hunted down after a year of track.

He just skipped those 3 years of experience. Wouldn't have been better to be fakely kind to everyone and at the last battle, to betray them all, while thanking them for all they have done to him?

And right at the beginning, he says he won't kill them, to his torture victims, while saying out loudly "how will I live next?".

What's the point in telling the victims who won't die, that you don't have a plan? trully idiotic

tr*sh fatty teenager who got rejected by some mediocre beauty wrote this crap, letting his anger and dream out in a novel.

Later, it gets so side-tracked that you even wonder if you're reading the same novel.

back to beginning, tr*sh.

PS : now I'm the one who wants revenge against the author for wasting my time LOL <<less

Cringe loser hero brat who after revenge but not using his brain properly and underestimating his enemy too much. Like when meteria came to meet him and bind him, because of his carelessness. Acting on impulse, but keep repeating his s*upidity. The author should make him more careful since, this is like new game+. And yet, he's like back to day one. Interesting story so far. Its very violent and if you cant, wont, or dont have a strong sense of empathy for the MC that may turn you off or if you have a week constitution to detailed extreme violence. The pacing is just about right in that I do not skip chapters like with some other novels and the build ups to the "revenge" are done very well. For myself I get drawn into the MC emotions, frustration, and despair from the first life and how they carry over to... more>> this one. The author does a good job of making you understand where Kaito is coming from. He was given about the most extreme form of betrayal (depending on your sense of values) and the author shows very well that the objects of his revenge are clearly criminals that would get the death sentence in any modern society and are beyond saving or so indifferent that consent through silence is their crime. If he was to ignore them this time they would still do wrong to someone else so his revenge is also the worlds salvation. This story is analogous to someone going back in time and stopping the Nazi's before they start a war but not because they want to save the world but because they have a personal grudge against those who start it. <<less

Personally, I like this one but I feel that it is either something you will really like or hate.

Let's start with the MC. There are times when this guy is dumb af but when it comes to revenge he is pretty intelligent. For example, he didn't understand the saint woman's actions ... more>>

even though he is literally carrying around the heart of the demon lord, and before it stated her reasons as being told by God that his death would allow a redo I assumed it would be because she would be the one feeling betrayed

[collapse]
. The arc with Grond is overly complex, the MC is putting to much work into making Grond feel despair, a guy who values money only second to himself isn't that hard to mess with. Seeing how Grond was handled worries me about future arcs where it will be harder to mess with someone who isn't driven by something so simple. The demon lord will also be tricky because someone still has to do something about her, she is a threat that won't go away for the sake of his revenge and he'd be the target of another hero after what he did. Also, he could have still recruited the current accomplices, got revenge on the traitors in his former party and dealt with the princess at a later time, I get being furious but take a second to make a plan instead of going on a rampage, the first thing you did was read that this is your only redo so make a proper plan.

To an extent, the story is all over the place in terms of his revenge. He is constantly changing between not messing with innocent 3rd party bystanders and actively involving them. In his current target at the time of my review, one group of innocents would be simple to fix even though he didn't iirc. <<less

I think I'll give this a 5 star rating, because our MC had undergo a character development. At first he is a pure avenger, killing anyone but in the latest chapter he doesn't kill anyone who meant no harm to him and anyone who's not a target of revenge in his 1st life. Though he wont hesitate to torture and kill people who tries to harm him.

Actually there's a girl who always persuades him to stop his revenge, but he always refused that because he promised to get his revenge in order for him to move on. He stay faithful in his path. Also the maou woman whom his lover was also on path of revenge though they're seperate from each other

He wants to punish all the target of his revenge because of their evilness.

Whalla! Four stars! Because I enjoyed this one quite a lot >:3 But as usual, imma write a formal review for this.

First of all, its interesting! A revenge story followed by a main character that knows what will happen in the future is a great mix! Sadly the MC isnt twisted enough to do r*pe n s*xual torture, so not much on the +18 part, well I guess he tortures the way he likes it ;-;

Next, the female lead is OwO! Shes a bit annoying when you put into count... more>> that shes always trying to control the MC, but it is forgiven for her Yandere'ish tendencies and all that she does is actually a plot to make the MC hers, not a good personality for a s*ave though but whatever.

Now, onto the parts that I dont like, MC thinks too much! I know like hes a psycopath and thinks a lot but cant you just restrict it to whats important or something? The latter half of volume 1 feels boring af, Volume 1 is just simply "MC got summoned, he made the Princess suffer, he bought a s*ave, he enters a dungeon, he left town" but wow, it took a lot of chapters for something thats supposed to be over in like 5 chaps or so, 10 if details were needed, its unnecesarily long, but the Volume 2 changes this, a bit though.

Then theres the part where everyones a dikhead, well I guess it works with the theme of revenge, ya wouldnt feel bad for killin em if theyre dikheads afterall, but boi hes cruel af and the way he kills is just e.e. the author has a big imajination power for sure.

In conclusion, a pretty good story about a boy and his revenge filled with racist mofo's, dikheads and dumb prideful peoples while he travels the land looking for targets to kill, oh and I guess he is kinda OP? He did beat 16 goblins afterall...

Also wtf is with the goblins? Is this Goblin slayer or something? Is his name actually Orcbolg Kato?? Well that aside, I really wanted to get to the part where he meets the demon lord, she seems like a good waifu candidate, hopefully he isnt too corrupted by the s*ave when that happens. Also for those wanting to read something simmilar to this, try "Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi", imagine Nidome no Yuusha but his job was a healer instead... also its much darker than NNY, but nevertheless interesting! <<less

Second of the "Three Amigos" of Revenge.

-----------------------

I don't think I've read such an intense and impactful LN since Mushoku Tensei.

Spoiler

I'm not saying that Rudeus and Kaito are similar, the comparison is due to the fact that they fight against an unfair world that tries to steal everything from them.

[collapse]

I can say that Kaito is justified to be a lot of "edgy" because of all that sh*t he needed to deal in the "first world" due to the "villains" of the story, but I feel sometimes is just too forced, at least in the first arcs of the story. The first "vengeances" were boring and empty due to the lack of sustance, I can understand that the author wanted to show how "evil" are the main character and the cast, but in the end, it was kind of childish. The fights are the weakest part of the story, mostly because the author is not good describing the powers from some characters of the cast.

At the end of the vol 4, things gets better, in the end of the volume 5 (with the mandatory "harry potter" arc that every isekai have for whatever reason), it was a total trainwreck in a good way.

Spoiler

It was totally unexpected for me that Meteria go full yandere for Kaito and returned him to the original world. The volume dedicated to the "original world" reminds me to those thriller horror stories, it was too dark for a fantasy isekai story, and the mecha part was total bullshit, but well, it's a escapism story so meh, and the revenge was okay, that c*cky bit*h was killed in a painful way.

The next stage of the "revenge" was normal, nothing special until the Leticia revelation, it really makes me happy the meeting between those two, I love that couple despite the fact we don't have a proper flashback between them, both are really cute, there's not enough flashback of them, author-san! Give more.

I like the thoughts and monologues of Kaito, he has a lot of regrets from his past and the original world. That makes it feel more injured and more human, it's a bit of refreshing from his forced "revenge" attitude.

[collapse]

The characters fulfill their mission, but mostly of them lack of personality, there's a least 5 yandere in the story and the villains are divided between good-evil, bad-evil and boring-evil, the only characters that actually had a personality is the MC, that never lose his motivation for achieve his goal and the demon king who shows a lot of attitude towards that happen in their environment.

Overall it's a great story, I like the narrative, the story moves according to the flashbacks and the setup of the world is interesting, the plot started to move in the latest volumes, but it's fine. It's a good read if you're searching for a revenge story. <<less
