Started out strong but it became lame later on. Basically an action novel about Doraemon. Bringing out things (scrolls and whatnot) out of nothing. "Oh why didn't I think of that before?!"

De fak? Why didn't he just said that "Wait a minute, I have solution to everything because I have reached the pinnacle in my past life."

Getting treasures here and there, encountering precious treasures in the auction just before he needs it. A godly alchemist who doesn't know how to refine cultivation medicines for his group. A chick magnet who acts like a JP novel MC. Ret*rded and stick to one even when their world allows polygamy. He acts like he just wanted to be with the main heroine but is not allowing anyone to touch other women who he 'rejected' at first. An egoistic ret*rd who wouldn't kill his enemy just because they have the same goal. This MC DOES NOT FEEL HUMAN at all.

Spoiler

Later, they will go to a sect and cultivate there. Life and death is not a problem, they just have to save from the save point (put their souls on the altar or whatever it is) and even if the died outside then viola! They can always return alive. They just need to load from the saved game LOL. It's like they are just playing catch the thief. No consequences, no worries just cultivate, die then cultivate again then try again. :D

[collapse]

This novel is too faulty but maybe, just maybe, this is better than nothing to read.

I dropped this some time ago, but I honestly don't regret doing so!
This novel is way too focused on the MC'S awesomeness. He's mister "know-it-all" and is so disappointing that I won't try to explain much, but some of it has been said before!

You'll have a good read for the first chapters (like 50-150, depending on how patient you are), but it will just keep on being the same thing repeating itself again and again.
Spoiler

He's godlike, has godlike luck, and nobody has 0.001% of his talent and knowledge except for the people he 'carries'. And even those people end up as side character later on.

[collapse]

So why read this crap? I don't know! Why is this ranked first? I don't know! Just don't waste your time. And go read something else :) There are so many marvels out of here!

imo the story started off well. Good world building, characters weren't bad and everything was okay. The problems mainly stem from the MC knowing everything about the future. There is absolutely NO suspense in most fight scenes cus the MC quite literally knows everything there is to know. He just "miraculously" finds a whole load of, for lack of a more fitting word, "heaven-defying" artifacts everywhere he goes. To make matters worse, the author barely ever releases a new chapter, and when he does 'poof!' it's finished (it's just that... more>> short).

I guess the story had too much potential and was written by someone who didn't even know the potential was there.

Do not read this EVER! You'll only be disappointed due to what could have been. <<less

Honestly I really like this when I first started reading it years ago I like the world building and I liked the side characters the romance thing as long as it stayed two girls didn't bother me that much I also like that he kind of couldn't handle certain people the first time he fought them it would take multiple times before he can feed them we have to plan ways of finding other people to defeat them I'm not going to lie I like that. But

I can't take this... more>> anymore everything I like about this has literally gone out the window from the World building 2 training skills getting you spirits understanding each other side acs I don't even know where the story is going anymore it was bad enough that the characters personalities disgusting but it was funny sometimes when he was interacting with his friends oh with people that was stronger than him now you can't even get a decent chapter I have no idea what the story is about anymore for people still like it but only can complain about the updates Different Strokes for different folks is all I can say but this story is horrible there's no redeeming quality for other than the fact that I used to like it <<less

***************************warning!!!**************************

read at your own risk, this is a mad snail novel and he is known for dropping novels or rushed endings

at the moment the release pace is 1 chapter each month, and its a chapter that can be summed up in 3 sentences.

... more>> examples of authors works I know of:

  1. Cult of the Sacred Runes - the novel before TDG, rushed and disappointing ending
  2. Star Martial God Technique- newest novel, on hiatus for a while now.
this is what I would've rated the story had the author stuck with it and not just up and left

translation - 5/5 - good translators, nice and reliable pace, caught up to the author so sadly pace has to slow.

pace - 4/5 - until recently good, he doesn't grow too fast, yet fast enough for this kind of story to keep the flow interesting.

story - 4/5 - albeit all of its shortcomings, and it has a lot, its still enjoyable somehow manages to keep you interested enough to keep reading.

characters - 2/5 nie li is alright, a fair enough MC, the rest are just static 1 dimensional characters, especially the main side characters, they don't develop at all personality wise.

world building - 3.5/5 - while the locations they are in are detailed and well described, there isnt really much of a "world" feel to it, the author shows us a small part of the world and then jumps to some other world, shows us a tiny portion of it and moves to another world.

the spoiler is for a little bit more information, I dont think there are any spoilers there :)

Spoiler

will start with the good:

the novel itself is a generic "reincarnation of a super OP old guy that learned and knew everything into his past body after dying" type of novel.

does it sound good? Not really

is it good? Surprisingly it makes for a fun and immersive read and if I was rating the story up to the latest chapters I would've actually rated it 4/5.

the other good point is the translation quality and speed - Thyaeria and her team did a very good job translating this novel a but sadly a good translation team is wasted on a novel thats bound to be dropped/ have a rushed ending., which brings me to the bad part.

while the novel is a nice and fun read there are a couple of things that you will need to ignore to make it so:

the first being the "main" side characters, they are introduced at a young age, act childish and are not of a lot of use to the main character, which is acceptable as they are still little kids, sadly as the novel progresses they do not, they remain childish and just about useless the entire novel, be it their temperaments or their hopeless reliance on the MC helping them get stronger, they remain exactly the same.

the second is the romance, sadly I don't think mad snail is very good at writing romance, not good at all actually. During the entire novel there is absolutely no progress between the main character and his love interests, actually their relationship with each other doesn't change at all. One will always get "playfully" angry with him when he tries to flirt with her, while the other will "hide" her clearly visible feeling for him while he ignores her, thinking he should love her more or something on that line.

all in all, through out all the novel there is little to no character development, regardless of all the life and death situations they get into together, not to mention the fact that they physically age but mentally stay exactly the same.

I can't recommend this now; releases have slowed to about one chapter per month. At this rate, the author will die before we get any closure. By the time each chapter comes out, I forget who everybody is all over again.

Otherwise, recent story arcs have felt a bit routine, and making death largely irrelevant for a time by having characters be able to stick their soul in a safety deposit box seems antithetical to good storytelling. But on the whole I've found it very easy to like.

If deliciously-cheaty heroes are... more>> your thing, this one's great. The author pulls all the sinister tricks of school arcs and auctions and scams and exploitative magic god tools that only the main character can figure out how to use, and does it well.

TDG is typically about getting an edge against classmates and impressing girls; there aren't long and drawn-out battles between gods. When the MC gains a treasure, it isn't just some upgrade to a big overburdened keychain ring of special effects; usually it has a unique function and the author already has a plan in motion for how it can be used to cleverly exploit an advantage outside of combat.

Naturally, the MC can't help but stand out, and makes enemies everywhere he goes, but having a sea of troubles rain down upon you from figures of authority is the spice of life for a xianxia protagonist.

I also appreciate that the MC prioritizes raising the strengths of his friends over his own growth (though in self-interest, as if raising pokemon), because his own personal potential for reaching his goals is limited. As such, the supporting cast members are often superior to him in raw combat ability, which has the consequence of keeping them relevant in the novels -- at least in theory. Most series see their main character grow too fast, and so other characters either get replaced by more useful people, or they get free bumps up to the MC's power tier, which feels kind of empty and diminishes the impact of getting powerful in the first place.

While the relationships with women are far from being on even-footing (like virtually every webnovel), it's fun within the formula of "hero does something outrageous, everybody swoons for him". They all tend to seem manipulated and they exist in a subservient role, either directly or by way of a tsundere-esque disposition. And I do wish that Nie Li didn't act like a disgusting pickup artist at times. But I think girls who follow pretty routine and unfortunate character tropes still make for a much more enjoyable read than meek female characters who don't really express any personality, and whom we get no romantic sparks from, beyond the writer telling us that the characters love each other. <<less

Have a lot of love for this novel, but not so much for the author. So unprofessional and disappointing with how slow he is with his updates. This is a novel that will never see a well deserved ending or any ending at all for that matter and it’s quite sad. No point in anybody reading this as you’d simply be wasting your time. Overall, just avoid any novel written by this author.

"Infinite cliffhanger has no beginning, no beginning mean no end"

Such an unfathomably annoying intent coming from this sentence.

One could never witness the ending as there was never meant to end it since the beginning. You might waste your entire life until you death and keep pondering about it in afterlife and still you will never see the true ending hidden within that profound sentence.

Cliffhanger God Mad Snail is truly an existence beyond legends.

This used to be one of my favorite novels. A hundred chapters ago I would have given it a 4 out of 5. In the first two hundred chapters I would have given it a 5 out of 5. I would absolutely recommend this to anybody who likes xianhuan though. It isn't high-quality, but the beginning world-building is great and original. This is a standard xianhuan with a setting that feels different from the usual sects or isolated mountain village that most xianhuan start with. The author does a great... more>> job of making a new world for his run-of-the-mill cultivator reincarnation story. Plus, the pacing is consistently good. Even later, when the story starts to get weak, the author avoids lingering on any particular event or battle for too long, and always keeps a clear short-term motivation for the MC.

Unfortunately, the writing isn't good enough to last so many chapters. The author should have wrapped this up long ago. Instead, we have fallen into the old xianhuan trope of new areas with stronger people, and an over-reliance on cheat items that only the MC has. The original setting that I was praising earlier is even swapped out for a new area filled with the usual sects that other stories have. The author still manages to add his own flair to the cliche sect life, but I have yet to read a xianhuan that actually gets better when a new land with stronger people is added.

Basically, if you are looking for a fun story with cultivators and an OP MC, give this a shot. It has lots of action, a fresh feeling, and moves at a constant pace without stumbling over the problems that slow down other xianhuan. On the downside, this is ultimately only medium quality. After a certain point, the author's flaws start to become apparent. If you've read good quality xianhuan like ISSTH, you know it is possible for a story to stay good for hundreds of chapters. Sadly, this doesn't quite manage. But I loved the beginning so much that I am still interested in seeing how things turned out. <<less

This novel is actually horseshit. Repetition of a details is an understandable mistake, but when it's already happening in the first two chapters, you know something is wrong. In Tales of Demons and Gods, the MC is actually an author insert and the story is written for the express purpose of jacking him off. From that perspective, this novel is literally the wuxia equivalent of Mahouka, except Mahouka isn't 'quite' as badly written. Mahouka really likes to jack its readers off about how Miyuki is just soooo beautiful, but Tales... more>> of Demons and Gods literally goes back and forth between saying how this love interest is beautiful and talented to how she's from a great noble family, and then back to how beautiful and talented she 'really' is, and then back to how she's from a REALLY great noble family!!

But even putting aside this novel's 7th grade level of writing, the actual characters themselves are beyond garbage. Not only is everyone a stereotype, but everything the main character does warps the details around him into jacking him off through fantasy technobabble. Character reactions and world details make no f*cking sense because the author wrote the scene with the reaction in mind and then invented the method, and the MC himself is about as mature as his age when his soul is supposed to be old as shit. At least some of the other characters in Mahouka are allowed to be 'kind of' smart, but in Tales of Demons and Gods, everyone is just an idiot in comparison to the MC who wins all of his arguments by spouting Meaningless Meaningful Worlds. "Oh wow, this cultivation method is so much better! How do I know this? Because for some reason, I do!"

In short, don't read this novel. I can already see from the reading the other 1 and 2 star reviews that this series never gets better, it's literally just an author jacking himself off, and not in way that would be entertaining for you. <<less

Not much to say here. Besides the obvious laziness in the author writing the story it has several other major issues. To clarify this was one of the first novels I've read as I transitioned from anime/manga into novels. I loved the manga version of this so continued to read it. The story starts off really well and I like the whole glory city arc, but from then on it keeps going on a downward trajectory. I really dislike big time skips in novels. I'm talking about ISSTH style 500-thousands... more>> of years of time skips, but the opposite is also true. This story after arriving in the whole dragon world or whatever takes place in the matter of a SINGLE YEAR!!! Yeah he goes from zero to hero, becomes sect leader and powers his sect up to an OP status in the span of a year. Most of the story takes place in the span of this f*cking year. Not only is it just unrealistic even by chinese novel standards, but in the story itself the author constantly reminds us that things are gonna go down in the future 100 years. While he says this shit, the author completely ignores his own words and does the things that're supposed to take many many years in 1 single year. At this point I don't have a lot of hope for anything concerning this novel, but if the author actually manages to finish this and doesn't make excuses then I'll probably read it all the way through since I've come this far already. My advice? Don't read it unless you're ready to be disappointed. All in all it's not a bad reincarnation novel. The pacing is just f*cked up. <<less

I really enjoyed the story. I don't care about points which some people didn't like. My goal to read a story is to enjoy it. If I try to find faults in it how can I enjoy it then?. If story is written in a genre that I like and is entertaining then I don't care about mistakes pointed out by other people. I don't think those people are good who points out mistakes of about all little things. Those people if they are that eager to point things out... more>> then I recommend them to start writing their own novel.

I read novels to enjoy it, to observe mentality of the writer and try to read the writer's ideas. <<less

For those who are currently complaining about Cult of Sacred Runes and saying it has a bad ending or what not lol you must be s*upid haha because currently Cult of Sacred Runes is still releasing new chapters and the most recent chapter they released was chapter 235, the chinese raw version has over 600 something chapters so if you are reading the translated versions there still so much to read. Also the prequel isn't that bad.

Tales of demons and Gods is one of the best novels out there today... more>> so quit dissing it, if you dont like it then dont read it then. For those who are saying the plot is the worst you've seen and so on lol then you clearly don't understand the plot at all. The world the MC lives in is a vast universe with multiple realms here and there so its not confusing at all nor wrong if the characters happen to find another realm with different types of sects in it and so on. Another review I read recently about this novel being based on luck and whatnot lmao its not its based on skill and knowledge something you, as in the person who wrote this particular review about this novel being based on luck, cant comprehend anyways quit whining about this novel because this novel is amazing. <<less

The writing is totally devoid of any kind of poetics or style, repeating phraseology and idioms almost in biblical fashion. Despite that, events and actions are communicated with grandiosity and are able to give feelings of vastness and expansion. This is analogous to the strengths and weaknesses of A Tale of Demons and Gods. No bullshit--insignificant characters are given brusque, one or two sentence outros. For instance, in the beginning of TDG, Nie Li gains three brothers who are introduced as unimportant side characters, with the reader being occasionally updated... more>> on their stat growth. One might wonder why the author even bothered adding them to the story at all. Nevertheless, the continuation of the story manages to breathe soul into a conspicuously mechanical plot (with the exception of recent chapters), giving bursts of energy and a fix of power fantasy satisfaction through each new arc. The main character is an incorrigible douchebag, whether it comes to women, enemies, or friends. This is both satisfying and hilarious when he causes everyone around him who he doesn't like to constantly vomit blood, which could be because he's an inimitable as*hole or because he's Typhoid Mary except with ebola and magical powers. This also can lead to a cognitive disconnect when interactions which would be light-hearted and humorous in a graphical format (manga) do not translate as well to pure text and read like him just being a dick. For example: his interactions with his family when meeting them for his academic recess. Still, there's very little more satisfying than when NIe Li picks up a new follower, or gets a new knick-knack, or humiliates some baddies. Unfortunately, the quality of the plot suffers from an extremely steep gradient, and by recent releases one wonders if the author even wants to keep writing the story at all. In short, A Tales of Demons and Gods is a mediocre story with shallow characters situated in a rich and vibrant world. Read to be quickly immersed into the magical atmosphere, and slowly disaffected with the unsatisfactory progression. <<less

I had read TDG until chapter 250 before drop it. Actually the plot is pretty interesting. Time travel, Beast horde attack, treasure hunting and many other interesting aspecs. The reason why I drop this novel is because the MC's personality. It's okay at first but he gradually become lolicon arrogant egoistic and possesive jerk. May be if you love Shoujo manga with jerk male MC you will love this story. He doesn't respect oldery including his own family patriatch and worse. He stalks the female protagonis whom only 14 years... more>> old like she is his. Snucked into her home, join her when she is bathing and many other. while reading this, I really hope I could kick his ass to the moon.

I don't get why people are dissing this novel so much. In my opinion, I think it's one of the top of time travel/redo genre. Some people are b*tching about how the MC knows everything and the author glorifying the MC or some bs. Well, notice the time leap, previous life talent, second chance in the tags section? Well, deal with it!

Also, there are some saying how the author suddenly skipped a realm during the mc's training. I think that's a pretty reasonable thing to do considering the strength of... more>> his enemies, which are way above his. So far most of it's been the MC exploiting his previous experience to gather resources or rely on their league power. Therefore, it's time for the MC to power up and let us see him in action.

Rather, I think that with his knowledge, he should have the upperhand in terms of strength. But it's also thanks to the previous experience of the MC that we can enjoy the occasional treasure hunting, resource gathering, wealth spending, auction part of the novel. They are obviously one of the exciting part of xianxia novels. Tho it isn't extreme like the hoarding MC of issth who only rely on treasures all the time. Overall, it's a great read for people who enjoy this genre and this novel is obviously underated at novelupdates thanks to those unneccesary low ratings given by others. <<less

This LN just like almost any other CN LN started off strong but just fell apart very quickly after 200 chaps or so. The initial story according to the author is that the MC died in his previous life but due to some weird treasure he had on his person at the time he died, his soul is transferred back in time to when he is 13-14. The story from there on is that MC knows all the future events and he knows that the city that he lives in... more>> will be destroyed by a demon horde in near future and he needs to get stronger quickly to save the city. Thats it. That is the story that is suggested by author. In accordance with this purported story, the first 100-200 chaps are interesting (atleast for a CN Xianxia novel). The MC gets stronger, pursues his love interest (girl he loved in his previous life.. although it is quite uncomfortable, since, MC has a soul which hundreds of years old but still is infatuated by a girl who is 12 years), MC also makes his friends stronger so that they can fend for themselves and if possible help him (MC) in future. Soon afterwards, MC manages to save the city from the demon horde and discovers the main person behind the demon horde. However, afterwards, the story just goes downhill from there. MC enters a major sect in some other plane and all of a sudden, we have an expansion in cultivation realms and super powers which we did not know of. Then it just becomes a standard Xianxia LN.

The reason why I gave this LN only 2 stars is that the LN had a lot of potential at the start, just like against the gods. The story started of strong and just falls apart not even 300 chaps in. This is more infuriating that reading a crap LN from the start as, atleast reading a crap LN will not build up strong expectations. This LN builds strong expectations at the start even though it does have its flaws (such as poor side character and MC development, poor romance, average and dry writing style of author and so on... but lets be honest these flaws are present in... like 90% of xianxia novels... not like it is exclusive to this particular LN... after all it IS an LN not a mainstream fiction so we cannot expect an excellent writing style) but after building strong expectations it just crashes through. To me this is more infuriating and hence the low rating. <<less

I'm really sad to see this novel in "Hiatus". This novel is the one who introduced to wuxia novels. Since then I haven't stop reading them and till this day this novel is yet to be completed or more like... Abandoned. It's really painful to see that the author is not giving the same attention he gave to write this novel when he started it. Now it seems he abandoned this one and focused in other novels that sadly aren't of my interest. This novel could be my favorite one... more>> but it's not complete, and at this phase it will never be or it will only have a rushed ending... The story, the powers, the relationships, the different situations that move the story, all of that is amazing. I love how OP the MC is and how he tries to save everyone even tho not always it's possible because he is not the only OP character... This story is just wholesome at another level. I only hope for the author to re-take this novel, and finish this masterpiece without a rushed ending. : ( <<less

This novel is really popular for a reason, it's overall pretty interesting and fun for the first few hundred chapters. Unfortunately, as the story progresses, the author lost motivation. The result is that updates became more and more infrequent, the pacing became extremely rushed, and tons of huge plot holes and and random gaps in content appeared. Basically, expect a generally fun story that can keep you distracted for 300-400 chapters, but be prepared to not get much worthwhile from the latest stuff.

Aside from a "rushed" feeling in the past 100 + chapters, this story has been great so far. The new chapter releases only happen once a month so once you catch up it's a little depressing.

Aside from that, unlike a ton of other cn/jp novels this novel is wholesome. The love/relationships between MC and his harem are pure.

There is no r*pe or NTR in this novel series.

It has become my favorite cn.
