I could never rate this novel higher than a 4 and thats only when the story is at its highest of points. I honestly hate the MC in this story and stopped reading it.

I may be slightly biased, because I always like a good rise from the ashes kind of story, but this one kind took the cake from all the others. The beginning, I'd say up through around the Phoenix art, is really good. It kind of downscales from that arc on, but since I decided to stick with it through the cringe phase, it ended on a REALLY good note. Or at least a really satisfying and wholesome one. 5/5, would recommend to anyone with a bit of time on their... more>> hands. <<less

Like many other said this novel slowly became something different. The MC was reasonable at the start but then his character development pretty much dissapeared into thin air after characters like the Chocobo Loli showed up. The revenge was only satisfactory and his fights are anything but mediocre.

I wouldn't call it bad but calling it great would just be a lie. I didn't really focus on the good parts at all but I don't think it deserves anything less than a 2.5

tl:dr It's pretty tr*shy, but still enjoyable until around 3/5 of the way through.

Despite the isekai genre being so overdone at this point, Shield Hero still managed to try something different in that everyone despises the MC despite being a hero. A typical underdog story taken to its extreme. It starts off very strong. It's hard not to root for Naofumi, as you get to see how poorly he gets treated by everyone else. Even the other heroes, also being isekai'd from Earth, do very little to help... more>> him.
Spoiler

And in the case of the Spear Hero, go out of their way to antagonize him.

[collapse]

Spoiler

When he finally does get revenge against Malty and gets his name cleared, it really is satisfying.

[collapse]

Being the weakest hero and starting off with practically no offensive skills, it's interesting to watch him grow stronger using unorthodox methods. I enjoyed how he unlocked each new shield using the different methods he's forced to train himself with.

Spoiler

Raphtalia starts off strong but devolves into a typical harem member trying to get Naofumi's attention, with him being a typical dense MC. Exactly the same for most of the other female characters, each trying to get his attention. It's not too bad near the start since there's really only Raphtalia and Filo, but it gets worse as more females get added to the cast. Par for the course when it comes to these types of stories I suppose.

[collapse]

The end wasn't too satisfying <<less

This is a good novel to start with, if you are making transition from Anime to manga, then manga to novel.

After getting tired of unfinished anime, you went to find their manga counter parts. And find yourself wanting to read more manga to end up feeling like what you have felt in anime. And maybe came to the conclusion that light novel/ web novel might help you remedy those feeling of being lost on what to do next after reading something unfinished or yet to be translated/ subbed.

This is a... more>> good novel to practice your imagination. Easy to understand and somehow can be related to typical anime/manga.

Have fun reading, Which you will be. <<less

This story is far from perfect, yet I found it enjoyable.

The revenge part is carried strongly until a certain point in the story. Eventually, it comes to an 'end', and lingering prejudices bring forth some minor conflict here and there. The middle part of the story is weighed down with slice of life like stories. However, they fit in relatively smoothly, not forced and unrealistic like most.

This particular take on weak to strong is unique

Spoiler

While there is a kind of grinding involved in getting stronger slowly, the MC (as well as other characters) also can get stronger through sacrificing their sanity, which is unique. This also puts emphasis on having friends nearby, to pick you up when you fall down.

[collapse]

If I were to summarize this story, it would be 'satisfying'. Not perfect, but it is very satisfying when there is a purpose behind every event, and there is weight and careful thinking behind the MC's actions.

There is a romance aspect, but it is carried out in a way that is nice to watch, and isn't explicitly harem. The MC isn't dense either. The romance is done slowly and steadily but, however, it might disappoint some people in the end.
Spoiler

As soon as he hooks up, the story ends. It also says that he got roped into other relationships in the end as well, which is strange.

[collapse]

In conclusion, the story starts off very strong, gets a bit less intense towards the middle, and then explodes gloriously towards the end, bringing back the revenge aspect in an unexpected way.

Really liked it. The best way to enjoy it, in my opinion, is to be prepared for a constant change in status quo in the storyline. Everything keeps changing and happening at once. Enemies become allies, friends perish, and new characters are constantly introduced.

Spoiler

There is also a quick jab at the reincarnation genre, highlighting it's sloppiness and inconveniences.

Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha) is easily one of the greatest (if not the greatest) transported to another world fantasy stories out there.

The main character doesn't act like a crappy otaku who is living his dream in this fantasy world. This is all do to the events of the first couple of chapters that make him into a bit of a cynical and distrusting person. This is great because it is refreshing to have a main characters who isn't after every girl in the story.

The story is well made. Nothing... more>> too different, but still enough twists to make it enjoyable and unique. Four Heroes are summoned and have to fight off these waves of monsters, etc... We get great character development and a very satisfactory redemption of Naofumi and revenge towards those who did him wrong.

Is there romance? Yes there is, but it takes a very long time to develop. This is fine though because it doesn't come off as unnatural or sudden. Plus, they make a great couple.

There is an anime in the works, and frankly I can't wait for it. I've been slowly buying the light novels as they come out in my country, and I only buy something if I really like it. <<less

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is by far one of the best stories I've ever read. It might start off slow but the time invested into it definitely pays off. This story was a gateway for me to start reading other novels because I had only initially tried to read it because the manga adaption was taking too slow. I would recommend it.

Shield hero was a series filled with betrayal, despair, and revenge. There are a lot of a**holes you will want to stab to death when you read this. Though there are also good people like Raphtalia and Firo that you'll thank the heavens for letting the protagonist meet them.

Because of the betrayal the main character, Naofumi, experienced in the beginning, he turned into some anti-hero guy with a bad mouth. This also explains his lacking sense of taste (in the beginning - because he didn't find any joy in living... more>> in that world) and his lack of interest in women (because it's a b*tch who betrayed him in the first place). He is by no means dense. It just won't register in his head unless he gets over his "trauma" of his experience when he was first summoned in that world.

While the story was good, the light novel is apparently better because of the improved writing and fleshed out characters and better developments in the story. And I do agree that a lot of the events could've worked out better if the author gave more details in those (some parts just progressed way too smoothly for my liking).

There are boring arcs that almost made me want to not read them,
Spoiler

town building with demi-human s*aves and the part where he gets taken over by the weird shield that made him extremely smart - actually didn't enjoy the town building this time even though it's one of my favorite tags. Sad.

but it goes back to normal again after that and you can continue enjoying the fights and adventure this story originally offered.

Regarding the ending,
Spoiler

I feel a bit complicated about this. For me, it didn't feel like a choice Naofumi would make or maybe I just felt like that kind of ending came out of the left field and didn't fit in how the story was written and how it progressed till then (this is about them becoming gods).

[collapse]
This actually made me hesitate reading the official light novel. I was thinking of waiting for the official Japanese publication to end and search some spoilers on the internet to find out if it ends the same way. Depending on the opinions on this, I might not read the official English publication (ironic how I only decided to read this webnovel because I wanted to compare the differences when I read the official one).

It's an okay read if you have time on your hands and enjoy the tears and despair of humans being betrayed and also the sweet feeling of satisfaction of having their revenge. Just read the light novel if you want better writing though. <<less

if you hate the MC who can't attack properly and lack of proper action and badassness don't read it. If you like overly dense hero when it comes to women and whose pet is giant chicken read it. Well I do not like it!!!
