Story getting more interesting in ch800+, especially when Yun Che traveling into Realm of Gods.

Something that makes me love this novel is the world building is already written early. Very different from SoTR that always appear another city/sect/kingdom which is powerful than his present land or sect.

For example:

Finally after MC conquering the present kingdom.. bu*t waittt... aaknaikn kingdom is much more powerful than his first, then after MC conquering the second kingdom.. bu*t waitttt... xcxcxcx kingdom is two-time more powerful than his second kingdom, then after MC conquering the third kingdom... buttt waitt.. asmdakdm kingdom is the most powerful kingdom! then after MC conquering the fourth (strongest) kingom, bu*t waittt... cmvcvmcvn kingdom from other continent is much more powerful than his fourth, , and more so...

Well since this was one of my first CN, I really like it event if it have flaws.

Ok, there is lot of girls with snow white skin and arrogant MC. But I like that those girls have still bit of character. Not everyone same like MGA (Material god asura), where there are line like -> and girls this, girls that.

I mean here autor bother to think of lanes, that go with theyr character.

So I like how MC have some character progres too. He have some flaws (a lot) and some... more>> good points. But I really like YC.

Story - Been long time but I remeber wanting drop at some point. Abaut ch.400? Im glad I overcame it. Autor really thinks when he is building story. Not that much at start but in charpers 700+ indeed.

So if you are looking for long reading or instant drop, I recommend this one. (One big flaw - this novel dont have enough charpers :D) <<less

I quite enjoyed reading this novel. There are better ones out there but ATG is still a good read.

The MC is a real womaniser and can't seem to keep his hands off good looking woman. I think he likes anything in skirts and big b**bs. Besides being a skirt chaser, he is selfish, a killing machine and worst of all, an egotistic pig of a man. Overall not a likeable character.

Plot wise, it is similar to most of xuanhuan genre. Nothing fantastic.

... more>> My input as of C1549.

I grew to looking forward to every new posting of this novel. It is just awesome. I take back my word "similar to most xuanhuan genre". This novel is way above most of xuanhuan novels out there. The plot is seriously getting more and more interesting and intriguing. For those who dropped the novel, I implore you to pick it up again. You won't regret it. <<less

Just a disclaimer, this is the first chinese wuxia/xianxia novel I have ever read, so I am quite biased towards this book. Thus, I really hold fond memories of the novel.

I really love Against the Gods. The main character is pretty good, his love interests are all quite diverse and interesting, and the fighting is really awesome. One thing that I hate about a lot of chinese wuxia/xianxia novels is that once they become powerful, they never think about their family again. Not in this book. He always thinks about... more>> his family and there are a lot of jumps in the POV to the MC.

The fighting is really awesome. The times where the MC decides to fight for his faction/clan and beats the sh*t out of his enemies while having a lower cultivation base is really great to read. The speech he made at the Yun Clan fight against the the Dukes and Guardian clans is my favorite scene in any book.

Great book <<less

You should read beyond chapter 359 (I'm at 1059) if you want to see these seven important aspects:

    1. Super funny reactions of enemies in response to Yun Che's actions, which never gets tiresome. I dare say, at present, you will never see so unique reactions outside the ATG novel.
    2. Power development of Yun Che that appears very dispersed at first glance. Nonetheless, great harmony exits between his abilities, which makes him the most interesting of OP protagonists. In battles or attacks you wonder which abilities he will use and in which ingenious way he does them.
    3. New characters that actually do things in unpredictable ways. As well as evil antagonists that have their own motivations, schemes, and extreme personalities who have been shaped by their own backgrounds.
    4. How Yun Che overcomes seemingly epic tasks in unexpected ways and under these circumstances how he reacts amusingly when in a pinch.
    5. Deep family bonds that in many ways are seen as more precious and unbreakable than in our Western world. You will feel your heart burn by the commitment.
    6. Gradual character development of existing characters and changes in outcomes, which make things more uncertain.
    7. How unsolved enigmas gradually surface and the world-building becomes much more nuanced.
With respect to the power gaps in realms that has been empathized all this time between Yun Che and his enemies. Personally, I would not like to see this removed as this differentiates Yun Che from other characters. It also gives the impression that you are a vulnerable target to his enemies, which is not something you would like to change. It fits very well with the hidden power aspect. I.e. It is a defining trait of Yun Che. Now, this specific trait might not change but you get all the above-mentioned seven aspects, which makes this "the" web novel, among several dousin others up-to-date novels, I get hooked on the most.

However, before all this you must accept the basic assumptions of the novel. Your basic intrinsic values does not necessarily fit a setting where power and family bonds rule. In the Western world you would get a spouse, which most of the time is not for life. In the novel getting a spouse is integrating the families, which is set in stone. It's like numbers does not matter anymore. As long as you have very intense feelings and see your spouses from the perspective of family bonds that will never break and you are willing to die for, I think it is much better to stomach. That would generally never have happened in the modern Western world.

The MC is very selfish and a total pe*vert.. All his wives are uncomparable beauties and very devoted to him.

Readers can hate this kind of MC, alright! But I like the MC so much. He has power, and he uses it to totally protect the people he loves. Everybody who hurt his people will be killed and all clan members will be annihilated till the root. Yet, the MC will never kill innocent people. He is humble and kind hearted. I said he is a pe*vert, yes, but he loves... more>> his women so much. Noone of his women mistreated, but too bad he has a lot of things to take care of so he cant spend a lot of time with them. But he will think of his women everytime. I kinda understand those women feelings. The MC pampered them rotten, unconditionally! Sometimes he almost die just for protecting his women, too.

I like the plot. Good naration and easy to read.

There are s*x scenes. MC has 3 gods bloodlines. At first, he got injured, a gravely one. Then he will need s*x with his women to save his life. After the deeds, not only he can be saved, but also his cultivation will soaring. This applied to his women too.

Mostly of his women are cool beauties. Some has kind and warm characteristics. But all of them love him so much. The MC totally, pampered them rotten, I said, till all his women cant even think to get jealous.

2 of his women are missing, one of them gave birth a daughter for him. MC did everything he could to found them, spent lots resources, but still failed. His master, from one of god realms, told him that the mother and daughter are dead, and the MC got very devastated. Still, he dont want to give up, till he see their corpes with his own eyes. This is what I like the most from the MC. He wont run from his responsibilities.

Overall, this story is about love, despite r*pe and s*x cultivation tags, despite how ruthless the MC is. White and black sides of love. All kind of love. How they got strong because of love too. How they became evil because of love. And how became a savior because of love too. But not only this, the action scenes are very interesting and sometimes you will want to read the chapters faster because of curiousity.

A great story. <<less

The world and background of the characters is mysterious, and every volume is connected, multiple plots running in the world, the story is not linear.

The harem is actually one of the best (the best) i've seen, I love the way the author writes and the relationships between the world and the characters.

The MC has a lot of abilities where it is interesting to see how will he use them

There's no useless filler in ATG, some chapters are used as "filler" to let us know a bit of the relationship of... more>> the characters, the strength of another person, etc, most of the chapters are useful to the plot and while it has a lot of characters, not many of them are ignored later on. While some authors just plans the major points of the story, in ATG everything was planned and it's connected with each other, there are some plot holes of course, the world is really big, a single author can't write that, but there are not that many plot holes.

Every love interest has their own personality, strength and interesting background. They are not "decorations", instead, they all help the MC to overcome his problems and fights.

The MC is really OP and smart and he is really lucky. While most of the times he solves his problems with brute force, there are good chapters where he uses strategy to beat enemies and even words to beat people stronger than him, he is cunning and really smart.

Enemies are true enemies! Their fights against the MC are amazing!

Spoiler

I loved the fight against Xuanyuan Wentian, Yun Che had to use a lot of "debuffs" since Xuanyuan Wentian was far stronger than him.

Usual Chinese fantasy ln with all the repetitiveness and annoying tropes you can imagine.

At least, the MC is likeable/vicious here and the other characters are also half-decent. The romance also goes somewhere and by somewhere I hope you know it's either r*pe or marriage - f*cking hell.

this novel is total crap, it had a interesting starting point and a somewhat clever main character, but it seems the MC managed to become somewhat strong he became a totally arrogant prick that once someone attacks u offends him will cripple if there are too many witness or just kill the offender if there is no one to see it, main character has (ultra thick I am this story author and this is my power trip grade) plot armor that also extend to any of his wives concubines, as... more>> the story progresses a large amount of godly treasures will just fall on his lap aka, godly weapons cultivation skills and medical ingredients, he is also a terrible womanizer who will go after the closes cliche heroine while totally forgetting about the previous ones event if they are pregnant with his child, a total hypocrite that blames and lectures others when they try to take revenge against him when he offends them but is totally ok when he does the same when he is the offended one, he also r*ped one of the heroines

Spoiler

she said no so it is r*pe and he didnt do it to save her life since after spending 5 months inside the trial her life was no longer in danger only her ability to cultivate was crippled, which in the end was a waste of time since once it was know she broke the sect taboo she was crippled again

[collapse]

there is no real tension since no one important ever dies, other than the dumb villain of the moment, the characters are uni-dimensional to the point of being predictable while the plot is repetitive to the point of boredom, the author has to keep making the MC do s*upid actions in order to make the story advance since it seems he has no other ideas other than make him do something s*upid and make everyone think he is dead, the whole cultivation system is pointless since the MC can deus ex machina with his godly skills and beat guys that are 20 lvls above his own, did I also mention that he is totally immune to poison fire and water?

all in all is not worth wasting your time reading it <<less

Chapter 1475 Update: I'm really losing interest in this series.

Yun Che has become a non-actor in his own story, and his strengths are barely being displayed at all. I don't mind his perversion, but it's played out in such a way as to make him look s*upid in context.

Spoiler

Xia Qingyue and Mu Xuanyin are probably the most disappointing aspect of the story presently. They are distinctly in the harem and yet act so utterly cold and detached that it's off-putting and makes me not like them (similarly to how Jasmine acted earlier in the series, where she was just an unhelpful bit*h constantly). Qingyue is by far the worse offender though, as she's been married to him for nearly 1500 chapters and yet she's STILL acting like she has no emotional connections to anyone or anything, EVEN THOUGH she was SUPPOSED to have gotten over that in a previous character arc! What do you even call this? Character regression?

Everyone is bizarrely focused on the God Emperors, despite the fact that they're utterly irrelevant in the face of what has just been revealed. It's really bad pacing and it's throwing me off. Qingyue is acting like God Emperors are really dangerous and a big deal, but... none of that matters!

He was about to go get True God powers and yet that got interrupted for this super unimportant segment where Yun Che becomes an unthinking yesman and Qingyue just acts cold while telling him what to do. It's so boring and uninteresting.

The thing that really worries me, and this goes beyond Against the Gods, is that I'm noticing trends in authors' writing. Authors don't seem to be able to change how they write. Yun Che is THE ETERNAL UNDERDOG and he's always struggling no matter how powerful he gets. Qingyue seems to be afflicted by this too, she's completely locked into acting as cold and distant and possible, and it makes her impossible to like or sympathize with.

Sure, she may somehow succeed with whatever weird sh*t she's trying to pull by removing herself from fate or something and thus erasing her past and connections to Yun Che, but if that's going to happen, she shouldn't have been written into the story in the first place. (That's totally speculation on my part)

I'll be honest, and I don't care if this sounds bad, but the fact that she hasn't had s*x with Yun Che yet is a massive red flag and gives me paranoia in regards to her character. Yun Che's harem is a huge part of the story, and that's fallen off more than it should have (Xia Qingyue & Mu Xuanyin having bad personalities in this regard doesn't help).

[collapse]

---

The story really shines when Yun Che is chewing someone out for being evil and dominating with words alone. I really feel like those segments are the most enjoyable parts of the story.

The protagonist is genuinely likeable, but it can be pretty frustrating when things can't just be dealt with and it has to be a long, drawn-out process (it makes me feel like I'm watching One Piece, blegh).

It's enjoyable when he uses his disguising ability or knowledge of medicine, but it doesn't happen nearly often enough. This is actually a really significant letdown, when I'm reading a reincarnation story, the protagonist is supposed to utilize his past life experiences to get an edge- but farther in the story he does this less-and-less.

I'd say the single biggest problem with Against the Gods is that the author CANNOT deviate from the status quo for more than a short-segment. Yun Che must ETERNALLY be the underdog. The bad guy ALWAYS has to be within inches of victory. It's really annoying because the scenario plays out pretty much the exact same way in every iteration.

The biggest problem with this repetitive formula is that once you realize how formulaic it is, it becomes clear that it's a cheap emotionally-manipulative technique. It doesn't feel like a genuine story is being told and instead it's like the SAME story keeps being REtold. It has serious diminishing returns, until eventually the readers simply won't care anymore.

Another thing that bothers me is when the author rubs our faces in how close to immiment doom Yun Che's friends and family are while he's miles away or busy. It wouldn't be as significant a point if he didn't do it so often.

I finally realized the important fact that Jasmine is s*upid when:

Spoiler

She took the Evil Infant's Wheel of Myriad Tribulations because she was confident she could suppress mu*derous, jealous or angry urges. This is ludicrous because those are practically the only things she feels.

It's like she's asking for trouble.

[collapse]

Ultimately, the story is overall quite enjoyable, but it has some seriously obnoxious parts. The author's inflexibility in regards to his story-flow are the greatest impediment to the story. I'd still recommend this, but it's committed too many writing sins to be one of my all-time favorites.

One final note: get used to Yun Che sitting back and letting a situation go on without doing anything once you get farther in the story. <<less

Okay I'll say this to start off. You're either going to really like this novel or you're going to absolutely hate it. I personally enjoy this story greatly except for a few things. I'll list out the biggest issues I have here:

1. This is my biggest peeve in this story and the one preventing me from reading any further. The MC has literally gotten trapped 4 different times for years at a time without his friends and family even knowing if he's alive and everything going to sh*t while he's... more>> away within the first 330 chapters. After he finally made it back home I was hoping everything would be good, but as soon as I read that he got trapped in the ocean of darkness area, I just closed the page.

2. The multiple near NTR's. This has to be a close second; it wouldn't make me drop the story, but it makes me extremely reluctant to start reading it again.

3. The overused tropes such as tournament arcs really hurt my soul but they're manageable. <<less

I read a many rewievs for this novel and there was one review who expressed more or less waht I wanted to say. I will say it in my own words now.

I like this novel, all the stuff with the divinities and godbeast is really cool. I also like most the character. As example, the queen of the illusory demon realm is a badass.
Now to the only thing I don't like: The MC personality, I do not like how he handles things, the best example is the Heaven Burning... more>> Clan, it was totally exaggerated. He does implicate many innocent people.

I will continue to read the novel and I hope it becomes better. <<less

Steroid doped MC where he say something and do the exact opposite, always get mysteriously saved/survive when he stir up trouble vs an enemy which he can't deal with as well as a h*ny one who jump at every women he meet (literally).

Well there is no need to point out that half (if not more) of the trouble are because of women, overall a very classic novel, nothing new.

The only thing that make it worth a ride is the plot the author build, hopefully it won't turn bad.

The thing I see most people hating about is the fact the YC has plot armor or is facing ABSOLUTE DEATH but still gets out fine with a bit of hurt and heals in a few days to a month. Little do people remember how the Mirror of Samsara works. (No he is not going to reincarnate, its still needs to recharge)

There exist techniques that allow an actual gods power to transfer to a 12yr old girl and an attack the lets someone use a hair they left on... more>> a planet in a different realm to kill somebody. Every being reincarnates and there most definately exists at least 1 technique to allow them to keep there memories when they do. People forget what the mirror does. It shatters karmic virtue to send the wearers soul through time to give them another life. YC was the focus of that whole event, karmic virtue being shattered would have made all the good things great and all the bad things worse, something definately worth the title Heavenly Profound Treasure.

The first time the mirror activated, YC had about 14yr of blissful life with a loving "father" and contact with a heavenly profound treasure but "father" was killed and he was hunted. 7yr of demonic hatred and vengence but gained a woman that loved him so much that her feelings crossed through that karmic rift to her younger self. He was condemned to death and jumped of a cliff but got to keep the Sky Poison Pearl. You can see where im going with this, and with him dying and the mirror breaking karmic virtue to "return his soul through time to his original, already dead body and grant him life again" (sounds pretty heaven defying put that way) karma would just get messed up to the extreme. All girls who love him are kingdom toppling beauties (get over it people) but he almost dies or goes through hellish pain everytime he wants just one thing. Whenever he goes into a dangerous location, karma will make sure he has at least one way out. I know this is long but so many people keep saying the same thing about these topics, its like they only skimmed through the action bits.

Last thing I promise. People complain that everyone is s*upid and arrogant. This world is founded on "Strength is Law". Only wemon practice the five arts (calligraphy, painting, etc.) Very few people are sensible. YC is smart, crafty, mature because he has gone through two lives and suffered more then most and makes sure they will never happen again, only when things are going well or someone pisses him of is he ever arrogant and he always has good reason.

Ranting over haters. <<less

At beginning novel was good, MC had brain and used it, story progressed at decent pace, but later on it became one endless filler chapter after another, repeating things that had been said over and over again, villains all have some tr*sh talk, which was usually totally irrelevant to the story, before they have they ass tr*shed. I have to agree with most of the reviewers here in regards to the enjoyment and level of creativity of this novel.

Of course, with the same interesting plot of reincarnation to a waste and how he became stronger and shock people and take revenge for those that hurt his love ones.

However, after the initial of gaining his strength and able to cultivate, it just became downhill and the more I read it, the more irritated and annoyed I get with the main character.

Honestly, this is the first... more>> novel that I've read where instead of liking the main character into dislike slowly to hate. He's just cruel in his ways of things to the extreme. I can understand that you should payback for those that hurt your families/loves one, but no need to be that extreme of killing all those innocent lives standby.

His arrogance in thinking he's the best and male-desire god for all females is just outrageous! Honestly, he's just a big pe*vert and love no one. His desire for females leading to the changing and destroy a hundred years tradition of a sect?! come on now.... be real. I dont know if there's any woman who would fall in love with a man knowingly he's married, still continue to love him and be together with him still, even after knowing he have a baby-mama too.

Honestly, I would continue to read this novel had the author not made this MC to be so lucky to have everything he needs and all world-desire skills, treasures, and woman to just fall on his lap. Be real! that's not how life works! But the discouragement of MC not actually in love with anyone and really focus on them, annoyed and discourage me from continuing with the novels. I know that male dream of having a harem of beautiful woman, but it's just not realistic! Had he been focus on one female interest and love and not being a pe*vert who says love, but in the end just because of their looks and substance in their love at all.

I really agree that this author is having a fantasy of himself in this novel, in which it didn't happen to him, and desire that to happen to his character.... so unrealistic in novels or life. really wish there's medicine for regret or time travel back to the time I did not invest my time to read this novel up to chap 312, just waste of my time when I could be reading other novels.

Recommendation: Tales of Demon and Gods - Awesome novels with the lead as male. Actually I start explore this novel because I was fidgeting waiting for updates from Tales of Demon and Gods. However, after reading, It was not on par and a waste of my time! <<less

Okay this novel can be summed up in one word: REPETITIVE - like every god damn arc.

At first it interesting with the whole world to explore, Villians underestimating him blah blah blah. But once you get deep into the novel you realise something *cough*first word of second arc*cough* This author has just *control C**control V* on Generic-everyxianxiafirstarc. Jpeg for all arcs with a little windows photoshop in the mix. Like everyone is the f*cking same, no difference at all!!!!! The only thing that changes each arc is the name of... more>> the place and people.

Basically it's fun for about 200-300 chapters then is boring af if you like a generic harem xianxia and if you don't well you'll only be reading IEatTomatoes or ErGen anyway cause everyone else is pretty much the same up till chapter 50-100 anyway. So give it a shot.

On a side note: Don't know how it's number 2. It's far too boring for that-atleast TDG is exciting with different people, scenes and solution even if you know the result is a huge power boost or cool treasure for the MC with a 2D dripping wet v*gina in the corner. <<less
