When a futuristic scientist is transported into the body of a young man in a fantasy world, his curiosity and desire for power push him to pursue magic. In a world without mercy, Leylin has no qualms about doing anything if it means benefits. He is cold, ruthless and calculating, never forming attachments that could impede his ultimate goal…

Honor? Who needs that… Hmmm… that guy seems too powerful for me to take on now… I better keep a low profile for now.

You want me to help you? What do I get out of it? Nothing? Bye.

Hmm… that guy looks like he might cause me problems in the future. Better kill him before he becomes a problem…

Summarize this novel is anti-hero with decent plot. It's not perfect or smart but it's refreshing enough among tons of other novels because it's dark and you can't help thinking that the author probably just hates human. MC is somewhat very robot-like, he adheres to some weird philosophies of his. Of course the typical heaven's luck or every-step-MC-makes-MC-steps-on-landmine setting is there but it's in the realm of 'Well.. Fair enough' kind of feeling.

You can't help to notice that there are some stuffs inspired from Harry Potter. After that, some new... more>> elements are being introduced such as science, demons, devils, etc. <<less

A ruthless mage who is actually ruthless. If something does not benefit him he does not do it but he's not evil. He helps others when it does not cause too much trouble to him and he does not kill for pleasure. Really enjoyable MC great change from the standard MC in oriental media.

This writer is wonderful, because I do not have to wait long to read the next chapter.. the plot of the story is interesting.. and I like MC's habit.. good pacing.. he's not MC that strengthens To become a Hero.. he strengthens to survive in a strange world.. and I like the part with other worlds where he can travel and become more powerful... overall this is great..

A rather average addition to the weak to strong trope followed by most chinese novels.

The MC, Leylin, is characterized as a super intelligent scientist who is reincarnated into a world where people can train their spiritual strength and become varying ranks of "official magi". He takes over the body of someone who is on this path and had just died so the entire childhood process is skipped (his family is barely mentioned at all throughout the story). His OPness is in his intelligence and his AI chip, which somehow reincarnated... more>> with him and provides OP analysis and recommendations. I'll list the stories pros and cons for efficiency:

Pros

  1. Leylin is not superstrong, just super advantaged when it comes to training. As a result, he constantly has to deal with opponents who are slightly to much stronger than he is in a direct fight.
  2. The author has clearly thought the system through and it doesn't feel like he's constantly pulling stuff out of his ass to justify things.
  3. The world Leylin is a part of is vast and varied. The multiple changes in settings feel unique and don't feel copy-pasted.
Cons

  1. Leylin is monolithically selfish and seems to exhibit no emotions or characteristics other than "power hungry", which can be uninteresting. A cardboard cutout feel-good hero is not an interesting protagonist. A cardboard cutout self-interested villain is not much better.
  2. The story falls into the unfortunate shonen trope of "protagonist is weak, trains to be strong, only to end up in another place where his newfound power is common as dirt, upon which the process repeats". The power level of the world doesn't seem well justified and feels artificially adjusted to constantly keep pace with the MC's training only to make things interesting.
  3. Because of MC's selfishness, the side characters are not that interesting either since he only has a limited set of interactions with them, either elevating unfortunate characters to slightly more fortunate s*aves to exploiting would-be allies and supplicants. I've lost count of how many times people have tried to suck up to Leylin in exchange for training guidance only to be brutally exploited and thrown away.
Conclusion

Warlock of the Magus World is a mediocre addition to the genre and with some effort, a reader can find much better. However, it's good enough for a new reader who's unfamiliar with the genre and its tropes. <<less

Not gonna plop down a rating as of yet since I'm planning on throwing this onto the backburner.

There's a LOT of clamor around how the MC is hard and logical in the description and sure I can safely say most of his actions reflect this except due to how the novel is structured, there's always been only one real plausible path, meaning there's no pros or cons to weight, it's a linear road because no other way would get you to the same results as what the MC does. That... more>> takes a lot of the logic and troubleshooting away from the novel and what's left feels hollow and dull in comparison.

Spoiler

Take the latest "development" in the story for example, we're told that no other ways exist to become a magus except signing a contract and/or getting access to materials which are controlled by mages, with no actual consideration whatsoever such as the average life span of a magus, what restrictions are placed on him etc, Leylin immediately decides to decline a contract. I don't necessarily disagree with the decision, but I wanted to hear a more reasonable line of logic than "I value freedom" especially from someone who covets power and decided to go back to the academy after being 90% sure he wouldn't be killed.

[collapse]

The xianxia powercurve aspect seems to be even more annoying in this one since we're not given a clear power structure of anything at all, all we've known for most of the chapters is that power goes
Spoiler

Normal people -> Knight/Acolyte 1 -> Acolyte 2 -> Grand Knight/Acolyte 3 -> Magus

[collapse]
then apparently they added ranks to Magus around late 7x.... I'm now waiting for Grandmagus who will get even more adoration from the world, despite the fact that even lower level mages are supposed some of the toppest peoples around.... Excuse the s*upidity of that term because not having a clear power level/ranking makes it difficult to understand the world being built up in general.... Although that's ALSO in question given that the world is never fully mentioned, how wide is it? how many continents are there? Do magi exist in greater numbers elsewhere? NONE of this has been mentioned and has to be inferred from Leylin's travels thus far.

I'm leaning towards not interested moreso than interested. I'll push through and read more at a later date, but tentatively, I'm not sold on the premise. <<less

PLAIGIARISED from the wizard world.

And no not just the basic setting but the exact PLOT! This one, although is more refined in those copied areas, the overall level of the story dropped due to OP AI and the whole Harem thing.

I dont mind reading about OP MC's and Harems at times, but after reading the "original work" I can kinda see how this novel just degraded the story line.

It's not terrible and is fine to read, but the story has become shallow. Its too easy to compare since its plaigiarised.

So very amazing! The MC is not a good guy but he is someone who will live forever while everyone else around him will end up dead at some point. The world it is set in is amazing and how the story progresses is great. One can never have enough power and there is never finish line with an end, only a continuous journey the MC is travelling. ------------

It has finished and it was great journey, I really enjoyed reading it.

Quite hard to get the emotions and feelings expressed by the characters due to the abusive use of exclamation marks but other than that it seems quite ok.

Best novel ever ! It's just... the best thing I have ever seen. I was hooked on chapter 1. When I started there were only 50 chapters, every time a new one came out I would try to sneak some time to read it, it's just that good. While some may call the MC a meatbag for a chip, remember that the chip only enhances his memory and processing power, every plan is his own. Contrarily to most novels out there where the MC is just reacting to situations with... more>> an OP plot armour, in WMW, the MC is in control of events and there is little to no plot armour.

Also most of the female characters are overly sexualised. It gets quite annoying where most women are described way too much or they try to seduced everyone with their 'milky white peaks' -_-

I would suggest reading it, but if you are bored and uninterested even around chapter 400 I would stop. This is a pretty good read. I've read all 1200 chapters of this thing despite the fact I get bored easily and usually switch novels pretty fast.

About this novel: prepare yourself, this MC is tr*sh. Self-centred, narcissistic tr*sh without morals and does not give a f**k about anyone else.
And that actually fits really well with the story. It also allows it to progress without getting boring when stuff like harems show up because, since the protag Really does not give a f**k, we can continue on without all the usual bs. I liked that.

The flow of this novel goes like your standard shonen novel: every time our MC wins against someone, someone else stronger shows up. Or, to be more specific, our MC goes looking for them. Because he has to be the best. He's the best in class, then the best in the school, the best in the country, the continent, the world, another world, the best in the UNIVERSE! And that is just because the novel is over, otherwise we would see him be the best of something else even greater. Just your typical chinese MC, I am right?

But even if MC ends up being really OP, its progressive. He gets strong through his own means and schemes, and it does not feel rushed or covered in plot armor.

Anyway, despite all the basics of this novel being standards like I described, the content is really not standard, our MC goes way beyond that (it might leave you shocked if you have a faint heart). I guess that is what kept me reading this novel.

All in all, a pretty good read. Try it out, if you have time.

Finish reading season 1 and dropped, this novel has too much asspulls, every fight MC will bring new powers/spells out of nowhere and everything is inconsistent, there's a guy that his "AI" manage to discover all his powers without MC knowing any information about this guy, and then just a few chapters later his AI can't find out anything about another person who is waaaaay weaker than the other one. After reading all these cool 5/5 reviews and liking the tags it's surprisingly not another 5.

the good thing about this novel is the setting and plot/story development, although that could be disputed, but that's about it, as was stated by others it is not scientific, which is fine by me cause magic, but the problem comes from the backstory of it, see MC is s scientist and has an AI, which means he comes from an extremely advanced world, and where are all the scientific advancements? you'd expect that but... more>> no there's none of it here. why is not explained either so we're left guessing.

problems begin in its execution as can be seen, another example would be rules of the world, it's being constantly stated that magi are rational logical beings mostly driven by benefit, and author makes it clear that MC is exactly that, yet when it comes to it somehow all that rationality logic and desire for benefits goes out the window when author/MC wants to go about things a certain way. here be 2 examples:
Spoiler

MC read all the books in the library, he has no reason to be there except for making appearances and is just wasting time, where is the logic in that? MC uses that as an excuse to avoid women and socialising, huh, it's known by this point that MC is a very capable socialite if need be, logically and rationally you would use this wasted time for something useful like experimenting or to socialise and make connections that could benefit you, MC has no reason not to, but who cares! so our extremely logical and rational MC is making such a blunder, who knows if he will do it again.

next is something that happened just now (around c267) and made me write this review, nothing new in this example, just the rules of the novels world being blatantly ignored: so by this point everyone knows that the difference between magi ranks is huge, if a rank 1 magi fight then acolytes can only run away or die from collateral damage, and if rank 2 magi fight then rank 1 magi can only run or die from collateral damage, see very cool, now our "logical and rational" magi see a fight between 3 rank 2 magi and what do they do? need some info here - the 3 magi are standing in a line with 2 of them as allies against the one in the middle, the one in the middle being MC and the one behind him being logically closer than the one in front, so what do the random allied rank 1 magi do? they get so close to MC that they get closer to MC than the rank 2 magi are. ??? logical and rational??? where is that? did I forget the meaning of those words? but wait the author is constantly talking about it, so what happened? all of those logical and rational magi just had a mass brain fart and went s*upid? and no the magi being logical and rational means they're cold hearted so they didn't think that they would be protected by the stronger magi, it just doesn't make any sense... and yea not 5 seconds later they all died gg logic n reason ftw!

[collapse]
this novel is fine, it's different I guess, but it does not deserve 5 stars, it's a cool idea in a cool world but everything else falls apart, the one thing that is really annoying to me is how author makes rules of the world but then breaks them and instead of this "oh shit! all bets are off!" kind of feel instead everyone just ignores that it happened and it gets swept under the rug. It's disappointing.

I will keep reading it cause I don't have to read now, but I was really fooled by everyone lauding this novel as being great when the blatantly obvious novice amateur mistakes and lack of logical judgement just drag this novel down. in the end to everyone who cares disappointment there is no sci-fi in a magical world, the world and plot while entertaining is filled with holes and inconsistencies, might not be that noticeable at first but if the core rule gets thrown out the window so soon then what garbage plot nonsense won't? oh actually Deus Ex Machina already happened just a few chapters previously, and yea author tried to weasel out of bad it was but it didn't convince me, too far fetched, and that's not to mention the several bs asspulls MC does out of nowhere previously as well.

as for MC personality and character, well, what you see is what you get, tada! tag episode here, yes this time the tags about MC are ACTUALLY true, all the people whining about how evil MC is should read the tags cause it surprisingly states correctly that MC is evil, which he is, author constantly trying to plead readers with disbelieving MC evilness cannot hide the truth. there is a polygamy tag hmhm, didn't come to that yet but MC needs alot of character development for it to be possible, we'll see. oh and MC is clever, surprise! perhaps because of his other qualities but MC actually has some cleverness to himself, whether that's just the way author writes or what, but a moment where I called MC plain s*upid did not happen, yet, we'll see.

that's it, I'll come back to this review if something outstanding happens that needs commenting, otherwise what-you-see-is-what-you-get bye

edit: c347 and MC had to make a foolish s*upid dumb thing yay.
Spoiler

so MC used a technique that allowed him to see into the future and he realised that his three (two) companions have great destiny and they will/can impact the future stability of the place they're in, so what MC does is basically "haha lol go f*ck yourselves right off cuz I ain't helping u or anything buhbye hope u dun die!" yeah, seems weird eh, when we remember the time he killed a noble girl just cause she looked at him the wrong way, now here are people who can decide the future on a large scale and instead of being on their good side or getting rid of potential trouble he just let's them go.

[collapse]
this is author bending a characters established personality in order to get what they want to get the plot going, or as some might dare say "tr*sh writing", oh and let's not forget - s*upid as f*ckall.

my opinion of MC tag "clever protagonist" has deteriorated (not that it was high since in novelupdates having average intelligence means being "clever", usually even complete moronic degenerated ret*rds get the "clever protagonist" tag though), although it can be seen to be for plot reasons, turning a character into a ret*rd for one instance to get what author wants doesn't change that the character has, in the novels world, permanently made a blunder that would make all the other characters in-the-know think that something wrong happened, and if that doesn't get called out then it's just tr*sh writing wholly undeserved of 5 stars by my books.

but hey the novel is entertaining so what bs author cooks up goes, right?

edit2: as of c410 MC doesn't like being "too shameless" lol

Spoiler

rank 3 normal magus can live 1000 years and there was one such old magus shown, warlocks can live longer than normal magi due to bloodline, MC as a rank 3 warlock can live for 900 years, logical and rational conclusion? bs.

[collapse]
There should be an "unreliable whatever" tag cause author either makes changes to suit math plot or our MC has serious brain problems that even affect the AI. <<less

This novel introduced me to chinese novels with evil protagonists who has goals that they would move earth and heaven just to achieve. Before reading this novel, I was still muddling along the usual ring of chinese novels with OP "nice guy" protags or those who are just plain s*upid male protagonists. So I just finished reading Reverend insanity and wanted to read similar novels which had evil MC like Fang Yuan. I heard about WMW and that it has an evil MC and decided to give it a try. Long story short I hated it. Now I am not against MC's having cheat items but....... Everytime A.I chip is mentioned it makes me want to puke. 'Any problems with cultivation ? ' AI chip scan and boom problem resolved. Want to kill someone 5 ranks above you? AI chip make plan... more>> to kill target, Done. Want to know if a person is bad or good ? AI chip scan! Want to know what is happening 10 trillion light years away which even rank 8 can't find out? AI chip scan. Want to find lost ancient super mega potion that can make you a gigachad, AI chip check database. It's like the MC can't do sh*t by himself even higher rank people can't do sh*t to him because 'AI chip' Even scheming and planning is all done via AI chip.

Next about the personality of MC :

MC is NOT evil. Compared to fang yuan he is only like an ant compared to an elephant. The only difference between him and the other cringe ' I'm going to risk my life for other people' MC's like Meng hao, Ji Ning, etc is he just gives a different excuse for saving people.

Other MC- I have to risk my life and save my friend I won't let him die.

Leylin- I just have some free time so why not save him anyway.

Bruh they both are the same. Where is the merciless innocent humans slaughter I came for? The only people Leylin- is ruthless towards are the antagonists.

Anyway if you just want to read OP MC everything goes right. MC never faces any difficulties, then this novel is for you. <<less

Sorry, I meant 4 stars not 5.

Now hear me out. Story wise, it is good. (I do not know about those saying that it is plagiarized so I won't say anything about it). Though there are some problems in writing like the exclamation mark after every sentence or the writing style is not really that good with that cliches and a munchkin storyline. But it is not as bad as the MC is not really fit for the story. I know the MC is really dependant on the AI chip... more>> but isn't that natural? It's been a while since I read this, but I keep thinking back to it as a story I loved. Cultivation novels are my favorite and this one ranks in my top five.

Some people don't like how the MC can seem emotionless, but I don't have a problem with it. He has own way of seeing the world, people he likes, and lines he won't cross. You have to keep in mind though that his one true love is his goal, eternity.

The pace is good for me up until the... more>> very end where it speeds up a lot at the last step. However I won't dock the story because...
