Many islands dotted the vast oceans of this world. However, some of the islands were a lot more sinister than the rest. Those islands, known as Nightmare Islands, were true nightmares to all but the strongest and most fortunate. Children were kidnapped and thrown on these isolated islands by the Nightmare Palace, forced to sign soul pacts with evil soul pets: Nightmares. These devils slowly devoured the souls of their trainers to grow stronger. If the children did not cultivate fast enough, their souls will be devoured whole, leaving only an empty husk behind.

Chu Mu, the protagonist, was an heir to the Chu Clan, but due to a plotted mu*der, he was thrown on the island, sentencing him to almost certain death. Dancing on the edge of life and death, he struggled to survive with a small Moonlight Fox he captured. When he finally escaped the devilish foremen on his island, he couldn’t help but let a breath out. But little does he know, the experience was only a beginning to a fated journey with his little Moonlight Fox…

I must say I really do try to like this novel. However, it grate my nerve that this is essentially dog fighting with more death. I know its weird, its basically in the title, but I guess I thought I can enjoy this like Pokemon but since the pets die as growth foods are the hearts, I'm feeling soft-hearted.

It just grate my nerve that these soul pets basically should face extinction as you need to eat more and more and stronger and stronger pets to evolve. Like Douluo Dalu where... more>> monsters become scarcer. <<less

Honestly I loved this novel, I was instantly hooked to it. The characters were really enjoyable and it was a great read. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because the ending was extremely unsatisfying. Overall though this is a great novel and I highly recommend that you read it.

Real Score: 3.3

Exactly as everyone has described: Adult version of Pokemon

It was is quite entertaining but could have been better. There is a lot of annoyingly detailed narrations of each fight which makes you want to skip reading paragraphs. Additionally, the 'grinding/leveling' is tedious in some arcs, however, all in all not bad.

It gets interesting and than declines.

Dark pokemon cultivation story. I drop stories faster now, so it was interesting enough that I read to c54. Problem happened when I really started thinking about it.

Everyone is described as cold, ruthless, filled with killer intent; yet as soon as MC appears they underestimate him, they get c*cky, they fail to see obvious traps. How did these people survive a death game with 300 others?

Why is MC better than everyone else? He found a mutated soul pet, and his ruthless; really if you have the option to highlight these... more>> key works you will see what I mean. Everyone is cold and dark.

The end result is a character who coasts his way though brutal death match. Who in order to be dark, never has any feeling about the situation he is in. All the characters are the same way unless they meet MC.

This stems from all the contests being constant death matches. We know the MC can't lose because then he's dead, story over. If he doesn't dominate the fight he loses.

The plus of this novel is no romance and good magic system. Read if you dont look to deeply. <<less

It's a pocket monster raising story with rather gritty/gory details. I quite enjoy the concept of it.

The storyline is somewhat generic, but if you've read one chinese xianxia style novel, you've essentially read most of them. This one in particular has a very strong focus on developing only the main character and his pets though so it might feel even more barren than most novels of this nature (whereby most "normal" practitioners serve a purpose early on and are replaced by later characters doing the same thing on MC's path... more>> to being too overpowered.), that said, I do enjoy that the MC has a hint of darkness, but doesn't feel like he indulges into it too heavily, rather I feel like the MC is quite pragmatic about his experiences. Also seriously, the main pet is too cute.

Romance is fairly light (although all the description of women who flit in and out of the novel on a regular basis is actually fairly annoying), and mostly non existent. I think the author could do with exploring more from the female's point of view as it might be nice to get a firmer idea of where these ladies' intention lie, but thus far, we're shown a lot of different females having a crush on MC, primarily due to his power, and then they disappear from the novel entirely and I'm personally left wondering, "why bother bringing this person up at all?"

The pacing of power though... is a weird mix of interesting and way too fast, it follows the usual xianxia novel format of different realms having large differences in power, but MC is shown to break through these differences in realms quite frequently but the overall growth of his pets makes it so small individual differences are completely trivialized (and there's a LOT of messed up terminology with regards to the realms anyway which appear to be present even in the raws) to make it even more confusing. Overall, I think the in universe power scaling and definitions are completely ridiculous and even more obtuse than the usual Xianxia novel.

I think in the end, it's a pretty solid xianxia novel, due to the sheer adorableness of the pets and the style shown in the novel, I'd give it around 3.5 or so. Certainly above average but nowhere near where I'd say it's exceptional. <<less

Surprisingly this is one of my favorites. I actually am not that big a fan of pokemon or pretty much any 3rd party fighting. However the main character is very interesting and dark and well fleshed out. According to some reviews he might get softer (personally hoping it is minimal) however the take of how someone can change and the main character development is very realistic and well fleshed out. The main issues I can see so far is the lack of side characters. He is pretty much solo and... more>> really the closest thing to a side character still has limited impact on the story. If you want great world building this probably will only be so so for you but if you read because you want to enjoy the character you are reading about then this should be a great choice as long as you can stomach a character that isnt exactly nice and has no issue with wholesale slaughter. <<less

Do you like pokemon? Do you like Naruto? Well, then, this is for you!

I might change my 4star rating depending on its evolution, but for now it's not too repetitive yet (which is the main problem of this kind of novels). Quite the plot armor, but that's a given.

My all-time favourite web novel. Maybe it's because I was able to read this in one go, instead of waiting for incremental updates, but I thought this was the perfect blend of entertainment and underlying meaning. I would strongly recommend anyone to give this book a read!

Spoiler

I was so excited to find out that the author is the same as Versatile Mage, but the ending for that is much more drawn out in comparision

Well a quick summary of only reading the first chapters would be pokemon X kinda-dark cultivation world.

I really liked the novel, it has very emotional moments and others of incredible fights. But it must be admitted that everything is very subject to the MC seen as a genius, also he never really lost a single battle in the entire work. Also, the ending left many things unfinished, how could it be ... more>>

what happened to what old Li asked him to do when he was strong enough? Old man Li's master? The item that the ice gate old man gave to Ye Wansheng? The sigil of the entity trapped in the black star? Why is it that only the crimson sun is not affected by reincarnations, the black one too, and that is why the black nightmere gave the sigil to Chu Mu?

Very s*upid Story.

I have read the whole novel three times but didn't find. Some questions.

1. What Is Sealed Event, when the villian is also died.

2. Why his father soul pets sealed and died.

3. Why his mother is upset with his father.

So if someone know about it please comment me.

I really like the concept, basically a dark Pokémon where people can just go for the trainer instead. The main problem is that there is basically no consistency or logic. One important number in particular has changed at least three times so far, and some things are contradicted even within the same chapter. Even if you can get past that kind of thing, there's also characters getting super evolutions in the middle of a fight because the MC would've died... after the previous one took days of rest? Judging from... more>> the other reviews it seems like those problems actually get worse later, so I'm dropping this. If you don't mind that kind of thing and just want darker Pokémon, this is probably perfect though. <<less

At first I just picked this novel randomly and started reading it but after I started reading it, I could barely stop myself and I have finished it up in a week. This novel basically has same underlying structure as Pokemon but trust me, it's far from that. The idea behind the novel was incredibly fresh and intriguing.

The novel synopsis was very interesting and the intial half of the novel definitely didn't disappoint. There was good worldbuilding, good plot and pacing was also great. MC gradually climbs to higher realms,... more>> has adventures and meets new characters. All in all, its a good novel.

Now for a few problems. More than half of the characters were forgotten but it was still much better than many other generic xianxia novels. Also, I don't know if you notice it or not, almost every character sometimes only exist to show how great the MC is. It gets a bit annoying. Another problem is the ending. I felt the ending was quite rushed and complicated. Clearly, the first half of the novel was carefully planned, events and all. But later on, it just dumps info and events progress too fast and monotonically. Second half was not as satisfying to read as first half. Also.....

Spoiler

Man, will it kill CN authors if they don't include something "heavenly" at the end of the novel. In xixanxia novels, final enemy is the heavens. I mean, I understand xianxia novels having final enemy as heavens but here also its the same thing in the end. It's a bit disappointing.

[collapse]

I love romance in a novel. The romance in this novel was quite good and organic. I loved the main female lead. The interactions between MC and main FL are worth something and they gradually have a great relationship. BUT.....

Spoiler

Somehow, in the later chapters, the MC suddenly haves an affair with another female character who was his supposedly first crush out of the blue. Clearly the interactions of MC with Ye Qingzi was much more in quality and quantity in comparison to Jin Rou, but still somehow he cheats on Ye Qingzi. Man, it was extremely disappointing. Ye Qingzi was an incredible character but the MC doesn't value her as much she values him. I felt extremely bad for her.

Also, the Author had to add an "aphrodisiac" chapter and forcefully mate MC with yet another female character. And somehow she gets pregnant after only doing it once while other two female characters don't even after multiple times. I don't even know what to say.

[collapse]

Overall, it is a good read in the initial half and later on it deteriorates a bit but is still pretty readable. Give it a try. <<less

The pokemon thingy resemblance, the fact that they themselves also fight on the battles, and there is no absurd plot holes like in vanilla-for childs' actual pokemon. Is really great.
Except, that may as well be the only and last good 'bout it.

Because for more than 100 chapters straight, the whole story and novel progression is completely one-sided, isn't well (probably not even-) thought at all and every new little piece of information, is either of something already existing and being important for the paragraph it's being mentioned, or is just coming from nowhere to make things connect.
For an example, at some point a brand new pet that enemy has easily destroy and maims one of his pets, no explanation allowed, it happens so it happens; then he takes out his strongest one, one move and done, enemy's pet is easily mu*dered... it's only mentioned that both are the same rank and same phase, that's it. Absurdly convenient. And is filled with those things all over from before, and I sure as hell expect to see that non-stop were I to continue reading.

Fish's Sky also treats you as if you've known MC for his and yours' whole life; as if at the very mention of his tragic past and his tragic clan is 'bout to put you into tears almost summoning Leviathan. And it never stops.
--Now, i've spoiled myself, and I gotta say, sometimes when I do it I'm very glad, some other I just wished I had to see it for myself, this one I'm glad as hell I listened to my head and heart. There's a f*cking weird and unnecessary and completely 'didn't needed that nor in the story nor in the whole novel as it is'. And is a thing that takes almost to the whole last few arcs or so of the novel to wrap up... f*cking god. And guess what, is also someone completely debatable important to the MC I mean, it HAS to be, otherwise it's a story that showcases the poor talent of world-building and creativity, I'm not content, but I'm glad I can now avoid it.
----
Or you give me a story or just a shot 300 chapters' novel.
---
If it's one of your first choices for fantasy asian novels, you probably won't notice things are amiss, so I more or less recommend it, but if you want at least what is known as a real, well thought and devoted authors' novel, then no, this is a no.

The start is good, I really ike how they did the pets part, and the progression of the MC at the start is interesting. However, I feel the novel was extended way too much, after the big main plot ended, the rest just feels like filler.

Definitely reigns as king, or queen if you are a fan of Mo Xie, among all other pet cultivator novels of the same genre. You have all the right ingredients, a good central plot with plenty of foreshadowing, a relatable and clever protagonist with an understandable motivation leading the limelight, secondary characters and antagonists who aren’t made out of 2d cardboard, a unique blend of pets within a massive world well built all in all makes for a delicious read.

However, there are a plethora of flaws and issues which make... more>> this novel rather difficult to recommend, even putting aside its controversial ending and obvious monumental size of 2000 chapters.

*A salute to the translators and the author for finishing this undertaking*

The character interactions were very peculiar in this novel, as everyone fell more or less within the classic cliches and worse still the romantic entanglement between characters were an utter mess. It read more as someone’s imagination and fantasy of romance and relationships, although there were so many characters you got all the cliches mashed into one setting. Almost passing grade, but not quite.

In particular it was disappointing to see how the author resolved the central and most important relationship, the fundamental driving force behind our mc’s growth, that of his first soul pact. Instead of a predictable redemption arc, the author went for matching abuse with more abuse and created an utter mess which never really resolved itself. It felt like putting a band-aid on an amputated limb. Quite a few times while reading this I wondered if perhaps someone had personally offended the author at a given point in their life and they were just taking vengeance on a fictional character. A definite weakpoint in the novel and made the thousands of chapters excruciating whenever the plot steered away from combat and world building.

Speaking of, the world building and combat were phenomenally portrayed. It could have done with a little less deus ex, and the powercreep trivialized earlier content, but its xianxia so this is normal. The author did not do anything new here, just more of the same old, but its done well enough to allow the world building and action to shine through. I am not going to speak much of the pets and mc’s interaction with them as it is a delectable treat imo, so less said is more said here.

I would absolutely recommend this novel, but I would also caution against raising expectations given its high rating. It is without a doubt at the moment one of if not the best pet cultivation novels out there, but there are definitive flaws and a lot within can get extremely repetitive (especially the rank/tier system of the pets; I felt like I was reading low -rank- intermediate -rank- every other sentence everytime a pet was introduced and it was driving me nuts). Sadly, I felt like it could really have been great had it risen above the cliches it was swamped in, but writing 2000 chapters of decent story telling and suspense building is no easy task.

Decent story made very unenjoyable by inconsistent writing and/or poor translation.

Author's writing is terribly inconsistent i.e. mixing up "thousand" and "million", sometimes even in the SAME PARAGRAPH. This just tells me he didn't even hire an editor or the editor is not doing any work. There's inconsistencies at least every other chapter, which significantly impacts the reading experience.

Translation quality is slightly above average, it's way better than MTL but many things are translated too literally. Also, translators don't bother fixing the author's mistakes (but instead will add TL notes pointing... more>> out the mistakes? Ok? Just fix the mistake?) Also, the translators consistently misuse/re-use the same words in incorrect contexts. In the first few hundred chapters I swear there's a use of "ostensibly" EVERY. SINGLE. CHAPTER. And it doesn't even make any sense in the sentence... translators, please use a dictionary...

Won't comment much on the story, but it's above average and could have easily been a 4.3/5 if there was good translators.

Harsh review but objective, as any reader would expect translators to have a solid grasp of english first before doing any translation work, and this work just tells me the translators need to spend some time polishing their english. <<less

Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking when I read this. It’s good. But since everything is so dragged out, I need to waste a lot more brainpower trying to remember everything that’s going on. I’m not quite sure about what comes after chp 1250-1300, but I know that most of the thousand or so chapters are just revenge plot. His drive is to get revenge. Cool. But still though, I understand the great distance between our MC and the enemy, but why do you have to drag things... more>> out like this? The chapters are long, or so I remember, and they are really long. I feel like most of the plot could be summarized as such:

Spoiler

Chu Mu has a white nightmare. Chu Mu finds fox. He raises fox. He gets off the island. He goes to a place called nightmare island. He gets 3 new pets. One pet turns out to be op. He leaves the island without it. Plot, plot, and more plot. Meets revenge target. Conceals rage super well apparently. Deals blow, leaves. More plot, slight romance. Subdues revenge target. Turns them into s*ave. F*cks love interest (consensually). Power progression, world level up. Meets familiar people. That’s about 1250 chapters right there. Most “plot” is just some battles against throwaway villains as our MC grows stronger. You basically never see them again, unless they’re some big organization i.e. Nightmare Palace, the organization who captured Chu Mu, or their rivals. There should probably be a mysterious family background tag, but not really.

[collapse]

Some plots are completely skippable, but I recommend you read them for entertainment, and to get a better sense of power levels. Romance was nice imo. Pretty good novel. <<less

TCOSP is a novel with a bittersweet ending. I'll not give a long explanation as there are detailed reviews below by guys who also complete reading the novel.

My rating is 3.5/5. An excellent beginning puts you right in a fantastical world. It does go sideways after dealing with soul alliance which is like 1000+ chapters in. And the ending.. Oh the ending.. I hate it. The MC had been through so much and the author had to do him and his soul pets so dirty. But in a way it's... more>> the perfect ending for the story.

The characters are wonderfully crafted for the first half. Every character has a motive and work towards their goal untill they are done dirty in the second half. The second half of the story only focuses on the MC and a grand plot which actually tries too hard to change the ultimate motive of the story which I personally feel is the greatest let down of a wonderful crafted world.

Romance is meh. World building is so awesome if you are a guy like me who enjoys imagining a really good world. The ending is ugh I can't explain how pissed I am at how the author came up with such an ending while he used the mutation plot armor for the entire story. (Well personal opinion)

Finally it's a great read with great content which will hook you up for days but be vary of a really big binge as it is a gritty story but a great ride. <<less

Actually I loved the idea with the novel... and it could be a 4 to 5 rated one

The idea of the strory is good, in which human cultivate and getting stronger by capturing soul pet (kinda like capturing pokemon, but for cultivation purposes)

The beginning is great, I like it... but after he gets permanently half devil until the end, the story being estranged and loophole keeps pops up. event the promise with old Li is gone : (. the ending also kinda a let down (it's bad)

Spoiler

Pro

  • The MC is likeable, always focus, cultivation & battle maniac
  • love the relationship story with the soul pet is great

Con

  • Bad ending
  • Many loophole
  • sad story of the MC wife : (
