I only write review when I feel like I stumble on an "unpolish gem". So it's one of those moment.

Spoiler

So the story start with a village boy in a certain village. What made this boy special is the he have "innate wisdom"="Reincarnate". His parents left him an inheritance a very ordinary bull. He grew with the bull and become a part time farmer but when he starts dreaming of his past life; He starts to yearn for adventure. Thats where he learned that his inheritance isn't simple as a bull. So that marks the journey to become a Demon or a Saint.

From the current chapter people might think his becoming OP but he is supposed to be due to him being a cultivator in a world of martial arts; It's just he cultivate the body and people tend to classify it as a martial arts training. (Difference is he cultivate the body using world energy rather than pumping up muscles.)

[collapse]

Anyway read it if you like Records of immortal journey or any Er Gen novel due to it's detail and Chinese proverbs. <<less

The first 100 chapters are exceptional, but after that the novel becomes somewhat generic.

You see, in the beginning the story seems almost philosophical, the character is placed in some tough situations and the way he gets out of those situations has a moral to it. You can see him learning things in a way that it's satisfying.

And it isn't only him, some other characters learn some lessons too (the pupil of the sickly tiger for example).

But then he truly enters the world of cultivation and the cliches we are tired... more>> of reading start appearing.

Of course there are still a few good moments in between and some characters aren't so bad, but it's still a noticeable decrease in quality.

The author said in a note that he didn't want to just write about the MC grinding levels, he wanted to write a story that is about it's characters, and I believe he could achieve that if he focused on world building, but he wastes so much of time escalating some small disputes.

It's just tiring to read about some unimportant Joe finding trouble with the MC because he thinks he is a small fry, just to die a little bit later inviting his seniors to investigate, thus scalating the conflict, but the dynamics of what comes next is just a repetition of what just happened.

Anyway, it's not horrible, but this novel has it's flaws, quite a few even. <<less

Great Story!!

Nicely written (and translated) with a great phasing (story development) not too slow, yet not too rush. It was true that this story is not much different with the novel with the same genre BUT whats redeeming about it, was the Author's writing style which is catchy and attractive.. Not only was the author narrating a story, he was also taking his time teaching the readers how it (a xuanhuan/xianxia) should be done. Do this, Do that. Don't do this, Don't do that.

Great narrative and descriptive. It also come... more>> with a bit moral lessons.

Mc's a half-demonic beast culivator. Mc's character developing was great and also every character is colorful not dull. Overall I just love it! Hope Tl keep translating this.. And more readers appreciate this

After reading webnovels for half a decade now, I've read my fair share of wuxia and xianxia. However, I often cringe at the immature writing style, poor translation, and repetitive narrative when I reread them.

This novel has none of these issues, it captures my adolescent interest in action, but also my matured desire for more nuance. To elaborate: I never did get tired of this novel, even though I've already read more chapters than any other wuxia/xianxia I've come across.
Often I have even screenshotted certain paragraphs just because I liked them that much.

Another aspect of chinese webnovels I dislike is the blatant sexism/racism. Though the MC is explicitly sexist in this novel, the author tries to separate the MC's thoughts from his own and the novel's female characters are very much fleshed out, with their own character development and sovereignty over themselves. I believe this is more important than implicit sexism you may find in mediums that appear openly feminist.

Lastly, there is no overbearing exposition. Information is given when it is necessary for the reader to understand something.

I can easily recommend this novel, even to seasoned webnovel readers who have become tired of "out by the roots" wuxias.

Novel is good, but I can't recommend it at all. The author constantly goes on hiatus, leaving not very much for the translator, and there is little hope of it ever being finished. I put this on the same page as something like Tales of Demons and Gods.

  • I'd compare this novel's protagonist a bit to Reverend Insanity's protogonist. Li Qingshan is such a unique MC in chinese novels I was surprised how original he actually feels doesn't care what happens as long as he lives his lifefull of freedom (as short as that may be to him) without caring about consequences altough that might be contradictory since he got the big promise to fulfill (you will know which one when u read it). That plays a huge role in his advancement when you'll see where his power comes from
    Spoiler

the transformation of ox (being stubborn) and tiger (being fearless)

    [collapse]
    .
  • Now about the characters, I've seen a lot of reviewes complain about the females and stuff, I can assure you most of the romance is just either short scenes or.The obsession with the commander (please just power through that part of the novel, it gets so much better after he gets over the commander) fades away the more time passes and you can see him maturing and not being blinded by her looks and power. He has like 2 or 3 love interests and they actually have feeling and can think for themselves, they are not blinded with love that aren't just unique looking jade beauties. There's a part with the spider queen where he has s*x with her but that's just a momentary thing. You can call him hypocritical but he himself admits he loves freedom and wont be bound by a single person.
  • Then you have Xiao An, and man, I love Xiao An's development.
    Spoiler

She goes from being a skeleton with no feeling towards anything else beside Li Quingshan and because of her cultivation method and fallowing everything he says towards actually looking out for him thinking about the bigger picture, being forced to learn about the rest of the cast.

    [collapse]
  • Translation is actually top quality as it should be from pingu for such a novel with so many unique and entertaining points.
  • The world building is as usual in chinese novels, quite good. We got different areas in the main planet (or dimension whatever u want to call it) and then you got the asura realm, the ghost realm and so much more, you'll see if u read for yourself, I don't wanna spoiler it, lets just say even I'm exited to see where he decides to go.
  • Now about the cultivation speed, it's slow i'll agree with you, but i've never been more satisfied by a powerup in any of the 50+novels i've read where you can actually see that even a small progress means something. There's actual hard work and traveling and going to places and not just time skips of (he spent 100 years doing x to level up)
  • Young Masters and s*upid clan elders coming to help the dumb s*upid arrogant kid are almost inexistent, and I can't stress it enough how good that feels.
  • I'd rate this 110/100 because its just that entertaining and you will love it if you keep reading it. Don't expect a novel where the MC just kills everything just cuz he can, don't expect a novel where in 200 chapters the MC will go from being a weak pathetic f*ck to overpowering entire clans.

Ok, I hate harems, so my opinion always gonna be based on that.

The start of the novel was great, we had a very intelligent MC and a powerful master, he got tecnichques, only killed evil people and had a great sense of pride.

I was enjoying very much UNTIL the first wife appear. *Sigh*

... more>> He has probably one of the greatest inheritance of this world, but "falls in love" with a woman that can barely be called cultivator and tbh, It was something like: Oh, she's beautiful and likes me, furthermore, her background is kinda nice, so, yeah, lets marry.

Rip.

That's the end for me, I'm not gonna continue to read something like that cuz I know that other wives are going to enter in harem in the same way and in my opinion, If you want to be the strongest, how can u build an harem while you are progressing? Waste of time. Probably the author put harem cuz he said he loves to do novels of romance, but he s*cks. <<less

Yes, its true that this follows some typical formulaic tropes. However, the world building is pretty good, there are entertaining interactions between the characters, and some unique aspects to the story. It is better then most of the stories you can find in this genre.

One thing bothers me though, and that is the "harem" stuff. The character will casually grope or sexually assault women all while in his head expounding on how he isn't cheating on the women he is in a relationship with because he hasn't crossed some arbitrary... more>> line. There is even a scene that implied r*pe at one point. <<less

One big disappointment!

The story started awesome, but from academy arc became mediory. Why?

  • MC stopped thinking with brain, but with lower part in pants (he spared every girl who tried to kill him)
  • MC became arrogant idiot
  • Useless romantic drama with Han girl
  • Xiao An set aside (I really like adventures of her and mc)
  • Plot armors in fights...
  • the author has already forgotten about MC struggle behavior problems in between human and monster

The most likable part of this novel for me is, it is a breath of fresh air for martial arts novels, I see a lot of good martial arts novels, and I really liked them for a while, but eventually you see that most authors just doing the same thing, probably because the way they are doing it is good, but it is overdone, this one brings a simple but different cultivation to martial arts novels and it does not just have interesting martial arts cultivation but the direction the... more>> novel goes is interesting as well.

Also another good thing that it seems it might be doing, that I have not really seen much of before but when I do they are great.
Spoiler

The main character does not just steadily grow, he goes through phases, at first he was a weak villager, then he started cultivating and became more heroic, then he became more ruthless and domineering when he gained proficiency in his martial arts, but then when his martial arts merge he transforms from the seemingly powerful human body tempering martial artist, into a 10 feet tall bull demon, and from what I read in the tags and the new cover it seems he will eventually get his human form back, I mean I love how he turns into a big demon, but it gets in the way of a lot of things if you want romance and such things in the novel, but if it just a small part of the big I can see myself really enjoying how he deals with turning into a monster from a human.

I just want to ask why this is still not getting updated? Usually when a novel stops getting updated for a month I don't think about it anymore, but it's already been five months and I am still anxiously waiting for this to be updated! <<less

When I read it a few years ago I thought it was one of the best cultivation novel. But when I read it again recently, it's actually not as good as I remember it to be.

It's not bad, if not I wouldn't have read 1000 chapters of it. But I just dislike the slow pacing of the story and how weak the MC is compared to his opponents. Plus the plot became very messy at around 1000 chapters.

There is a review saying that the main character haven't lost to anyone... more>> but
Spoiler

he barely won in most of his fights and he did lose, ran away from his enemies, or get killed. But later got the ability to resurrect himself so dying is not a big deal for him

I like this novel, and I like most parts of it, but occasionally the MC just decides "today I am an a-hole". Like, early on, he is pretty sexually restrained, with a crush for one girl and a relationship with another... but later on he's just like "y'know I'll just cheat on my fiance with one girl... and another... and another... and another" and then lies to her about it, and the author acts like this is just normal and not POS behavior from the MC. And another time, he's... more>> like, "yeah, this race has a lot of people who kinda act like jerks... time to commit genocide with a bioweapon".

Free and unrestrained is one thing, but being a d*ck is a totally different matter.

EDIT: As of 1559 I officially am dropping it. The "today I am an a-hole" stuff continued on and on and on, and the side characters basically disappeared. It got to the point where I was struggling to continue reading, because I felt like the story had nothing grounding it to the world.

But what finally broke me was the friggen filler arcs. At one point the MC lives like 100 years in this mini-world, has a bunch of kids, and becomes god of that world... and that's basically off screen. It just takes up a ton of chapters and doesn't feel meaningful at all, especially since he abandons all his kids anyways and they never show up again, and only a handful of years pass in the normal world. There were two that were the final straws though. In the first one, the MC and his clone lose their memories in separate adventures that last for a ton of chapters and have to struggle to remember them before merging and regaining them. Then, they go to a different plane... AND IMMEDIATELY LOSE THEM AGAIN IN ANOTHER FILLER ARC. God it's infuriating.

I wish we could have our cool demons vs humans conflict back in the really interesting and detailed world, but they had to pull that whole xianxia ascension BS and now we're in a handful of underdeveloped worlds with underdeveloped characters and everything we grew to care about is no longer relevant. I really gotta remember my xianxia rule of thumb: If they ascend to a new plane or do more than a 10 year timeskip, drop then and there, because the author will inevitably f**k it up. <<less

The Legend of The Great Sage is currently still being updated and by 3/27/22 there are 1383 chapters. The story itself is about a mortal, Li Qingshan who has a ox who turns out to be a godly figure in a place called "beyond the nine heavens" and his main goal is to go there.

Overall, the story itself is quite good. Its worldbuilding, interactions between characters, and the translation quality is top tier. The comedic elements that are shown throughout the story and overall the personality of the main character... more>> gives me quite a bit of chortles every now and then and keeps me going. The action scenes are engaging the story progression is at a moderate pace that gives a little bit of everything. The main character himself is quite OP, so wish fulfillment will be given.

The only thing that may need to be warned is the pacing at the beginning of the novel. At the start, things are a bit slow and he is still a mortal and the immortal shiz really picks up at around 73 ish.

In comparison to other tr*shy stories, this one deserves a read, so I highly recommend you give it a try. <<less

As of this point I'm dropping my rating from a 3 to 2. The MC is dumb. Like, really dumb. The author seems to want to write combat and set piece battles at the expense of any and all sense so the MC repeatedly makes idiotic decisions and walks into dangerous situations that he could have easily avoided with even the slightest bit of caution and common sense. He then of course proceeds to escape these situations through asspulls.

The author also seems allergic to having the MC stay in a... more>> safe location for any period of time.

Spoiler

He goes to a cultivation school, because he wants to avoid getting killed by a sect, immediately after he gets there, before even entering the school, he makes a deal with a local leader of the sect to leave him alone, then is immediately sent on a mission outside of the school. Like, the whole point was to avoid being in danger from powerful enemies wasn't it? What was even the point if he can just get sent out on missions anyways? Plus he recognizes obvious traps and then walks right into them, for no reason, it's incredibly annoying.

I liked Xiao An at the start but she's becoming way to overpowered and perfect, and it's coming at the expense of her character. <<less

This novel is easily the best one to come out of china in modern times. The world is vivid, almost all characters have depth. The plot interconnects and shifts extremely well. The protagonist and everyone around him feel like humans, with their flaws, quirks and mistakes. Sometimes, I even find myself rooting for the "Evil" people, which is a pretty clear sign of a well written "villain".

The people are also much more down to earth. The protagonist doesn't kill everyone that looks at him in an ugly way, and neither... more>> do most other people. Not all grievances end up as a life and death things, and some even lead to the protagonist make new allies.

As an extra, there's almost no filler and most battles tend to be either really well written or really quick. You don't have the usual "courting death" spam from a faceless audience every three paragraphs, nor the endless stream of conceited young masters that the MC takes ages to finish off. Conceited people always die young in the Jianghu after all, and the MC makes sure of this.

The MC is also a demon, and he isn't an eternal virg*n, so that's that just in case you're interested *Wink*. <<less

Great novel but the author is too unrelieable with his mind-boggling unbelievable plot twists
And I'm not talking about the good unbelievable, but the unbelievable where you as a reader start questioning the credibility of the story itself, completely out of nowhere stuff (like an ant backstabbing a god, why is this a thing)

Spoiler

The main character Li Qingshan is very likeable and his interactions quite unique
his cultivation starts VERY slow, but it starts picking up around chapter 390+
His personality is pretty average, he won't act like he's a saint but he's not letting his daemon side change him either, a 50/50. (Personally, I like his daemon side the most, maybe because human cultivators are the norm)

Xiao An, Li Qingshan's companion, keeps his daemon side on check while being as powerful as Qingshan himself
(maybe not as strong as Li Qingshan right now but you know she will always stay around his powerlevel)
She has a very robotic personality and is very adorable
(she just recovererd her memories so this might change)
But the author wronged this character so bad it's crazy, at the start of the story she would travel with Li Qingshan, fight alongside with him, cultivate, have some wholesome moments and some character development.

But now all we get is Xiao An sitting for months in buddhist temples because the big brain author won't stop sh*tting these buddhist masters who find out that Xiao An has a buddhist affinity, of course, these monks will ALWAYS manage to force Xiao An into becoming their disciple because their cultivation will always be 1 or 2 realms above Li Qingshan's, coincidence? I think not!

Why? Is it because she's too strong and teaming up with Qingshan would be too overpowered so he has to take her out of the story for a while? That isn't the reader's problem, the author himself should've known this would happen when he wrote her techniques earlier, also I think we all saw through this Cicada guy promise as a way to keep Xiao An out of the story, shameless.

(Maybe I went a bit too hard with the Xiao An part, but man i've read 662 chapters and now I'm slightly invested, so I do have the right to complain about the author actively taking Xiao An out of the story)

About the side characters I won't say much because the author has recently started obsessing over the "karma" and "karmic ties", so I expect everyone dying sooner or later because Li Qingshan will stop caring about them.

The fights are pretty good, not over the top exaggerations like: (his sword slash severed the myriad dao, the karmic cycles, the ying and yang, mt. Tai and killed the author as well)
So far the most interesting fight was Qingshan's vs Lolth, the techniques were on point, Qingshan's breakthrough made sense and the reason for the fight wasn't petty, by the way i've read people say that Qingshan "r*ped" a woman (i guess they're talking about little Lolth?) which is completely untrue because:
1st. Lolth is a demon spider who transformed into a human after the tribulation, so she's still a demonic animal
2nd. The author clearly stated that Lolth "played" with her victims before eating them
3rd. Once Lolth trapped Qingshan with her silk, only his face (we know our boy Northmoon is a jade beauty) and his "lower" half remained intact, so we knew what was coming if he lost
4th. Qingshan outsmarted and defeated Lolth so he had the right give her a taste of her own medicine, and even though she was unwilling at the start, it wasn't because of the act itself but because Qingshan was a Demon General while she was a Demon Commander. (You dare!?)

The fight with the Corpse King? I didn't care one bit, honestly, can we get rid of zombies and ghosts in Wuxia novels? They're just sponges taking infinite damage then regenerating or growing stronger!
I would even say it was filler but Xiao An got a little bit of development so whatever.

Also i've read people say there aren't young masters in this novel which is wrong
The sword dude Fu Qingjin is a young master in disguise, also Zhou Zhibo, Mo Yu and Si Qing.
Just because they don't directly ask Li Qingshan to kowtow 100 times, slap himself 100 times, cut his left arm and hand over his jade beauties (he only has one and she's not known for her beauty!) doesn't mean they're not young masters, all of them are/were delusional and used the names of their sect/master/title or position to throw their weight around or to oppress people.

[collapse]

Even though the translation speed seems to be very slow I really recommend this novel, there will be times where you might want to drop the novel because of the slow cultivation or the Rongzhi nonsense but just skim through, don't give it up that easy because it will get better.

Last but not least Rongzhi is a tr*sh character, let's get rid of her, thanks.

I have enjoyed this novel and there were parts which I did not like, however, if you can get past those, then this is a great novel. This may seem like just another cultivation novel, but what's different here are a couple of things: MC is well-written, you know his passions and get to watch him struggle with his humanity. Certain characters will take the spotlight away from MC and I enjoy when this happens. Women are written pretty well although this is a harem novel.

This novel had a very... more>> strong start:

I loved the bull part and him turning into a demon and the subsequent events. Very fun part of the story.

After that, it kind of slowed down and we are introduced to some new characters and a great antagonist/villain

that will definitely continue to be a part of the story. Some people may not like this part of the story as its slow and its a whole new environment but once we get past that, things pick up again and new twists are enjoyable to read.

I will admit that it's not as enjoyable as when I first started reading this, but its still a great novel, not an amazing one, but pretty good. Hopefully it continues this way. 4/5. <<less

Excellent read. To be honest it makes me wish to continue reading without stopping. Is not as if this was a "has it all" or "perfect in the genre" novel but I'm accustomed to reading so much garbage that starts off very good and then at the 100 chapters gets killed. Following some of the plots and possible 'future interactions' it seems that this has a good future ahead.

The romance part is also very well written. This novel is not about it but already does it pretty well. I was... more>> expecting the girls of the MC to fall in love with him for random reasons or for him to already have a +5 harem in the first two hundred chapters but I was honestly surprised.

Even though I know there are +1600 MTL chapters I refuse to acknowledge their existence.

I praise the TL for his good job. I'm loving this :) <<less
