Unbearably disgusting !!!

The MC gives the "nice guy" vibes, he truly makes you want to throw up! His comments are absolutely appalling!

Also, the missing tag is "rape"not "r*pe victim"; because the mc's actions towards the drugged woman are exactly that.

... more>> Just by how much he mentions that women are property, how jealous he gets when other women and men are interacting, and by how he degrades handsome men apperances because he is ugly as f***, you would already despise such character.

But that's not the only thing, he is also extremely homophobic and transphobic, being utterly disgusted at men wearing women's clothes, and claiming that one could only feel attracted by the opposite gender, even when they are under an aphrodisiac's effects. He also disdains men with feminine appearences and tastes. You could literally feel from what he says when his male friends tease him playfully (grabbing him, hitting him... etc) the "no homo" undertone.

What would end it for you is when the author describes his desire for women; really one of the most disgusting things ever!

Just imagine an ugly guy with fragile masculinity who can't stop saying "no homo" when his friends tease him, who is also a "nice guy"with a rapist behavior who thinks women are property. And that same guy is telling you about how much he lusts after a woman (creepily describing her breasts and body to you in the process) while said woman is probably disgusted by him or doesn't even know he exists. This perfectly fits this novel. So if you want to be disgusted, go ahead and read it! <<less

I read all the chapters including the raw. I got to say this is an amazing story up to the part he leaves his original world. Since then he has gone through a rinse and repeat version of powering up from being very weak and running away from powerful foes. Towards the end of his time in the spiritual word, he finally meets up with his original wife, but has to go to the fairy world shortly afterwards. This part of the story ruins any lingering hope I had of... more>> having a decent read. The author rushed and left the story on a cliff hanger with the MC leaving behind all his companions he reunited with after 20 chps. And through out the story he lost his powers over three times, hasn't had any nice war arcs since the first one before transporting to the sea region and his cultivation just keeps growing with out any problems appearing. Overall the whole spiritual realm was a waste and any readers should stop right when he removes the curse from his beloved. Otherwise you'll feel bitter with the half-ass writing the author did for the second half of the story. Wasting so much potential..... 3/5 (Only due to the amazing beginning.) <<less

Well, another cultivation novel where people want to sit in a remote cave alone for eternity and their boring stories are told through overly extend and repetitive paragraphs. There are even more interesting events in my humble short mortal life. From positive side, the story and fights are more believable and consistent than most of the famous cultivation novels.

This is a well thought out and brilliant story and has villains that actually uses their brains which I found to be quite refreshing. But the absolute highlight of this story is the protagonist and whether you will actually like this novel or hate it entirely depends on whether you will like the protagonist. The reason for that is while this novel has does do a decent job of portraying the various side characters, The story completely revolves around the MC (who is average in looks and has below average... more>> magical aptitude and has no other remarkable qualities except for his superior intelligence and cunning) and his pursuit of immortality. And since the MC is definitely not the sentimental type he just passes through these side characters with just a passing acquaintance except for one or two that actually manages to leave a lasting impression on him. In fact you can describe the MC in three words as the ultimate pragmatist. He dosen't care about whats righteous or not nor does he care about useless morals or emotions for the most part. He is 100% completely devoted to his goal of immortality and for the most past does not care about anything else. It would be accurate to say he absolutely has no heroic bone in his body as he values own life as most precious and does his utmost to avoid conflict and getting noticed cuz he understand heroes die and dosen't wanna be a just another tragic hero. Although for some this might look like cowardice I for one find this quite refreshing as this novel dosen't have the usual cliche tr*sh villains who shittalk and brag about power level for whole chapters then get steamrolled by the MC in the next chapter. Action for the most part is short and bloody where MC does not s*upidly talk with his enemy about his skills or power for chapters and just goes strait for the kill.

If you are looking for a novel where there's constant action and battles just keeps ramping up for whole chapters then this isn't a novels for you. While there are some long action scenes for the most past it's short and vicious where the MC only fights whenever he has to and actually tries his best to avoid fighting. Most of the times the MC goes to battle that's cuz either when his life is threatened or he has to get a special cultivation resource or something like that.

Another good thing is that MC is extremely intelligent and meticulous and plans things well ahead and always has a backup plan in hand and I don't mean where he gets beaten to sh*t and just pulls up some super shiny rainbow awesome gadget or a powerup out of his arse suddenly. No I mean actual planning where the reader knows beforehand what he's doing and his plans. Now while it can be argued this may lead to some losing of suspense it is absolutely isn't the case. The suspense comes from from when and where he actually uses these contingencies in the fight and since the MC isn't above using the others to wear out the enemy or as a meatshied to test the waters it is absolutely satisfying to watch when he actually pulls off these schemes and dispatches powerful enemies. Also sometimes even his best laid plans are just aren't enough which actually gives these fights quite a sense of realism.

So in final thoughts I do highly recommend this to those that are tired of the usual cliche boring xianxia tropes. But if my description of the MC is not to your liking then I recommend staying away. But for me this is definitely a 5/5. <<less

This is one of the very few novels were the MC actually acts and thinks rationally. The MC doesn't make it his job to go against the heavens or kill everyone he sees but to live a normal life of a cultivator, but what makes this novel good is that a series of situations lead the MC into taking rational paths to survive instead of using plot armor and luck to survive his calamities.

The novel is really rich in lore and content, is MC focused, and people give the correct... more>> amount of dialogue while keeping filler content to a minimum.

One of the best novels out there but translation speed is extremely slow because I think it's one of the writers current projects were the raws aren't really far ahead for huge donations. <<less

I'll note here that I will consider the novel's end at 2451, so without the immortal arc.

Sooo...

The idea is a great one. Instead of following a super talented MC that will powerlevel through the entire cultivation process, the protagonist is a talentless mortal with an (at best) average cultivation talent.

The issue is, it doesn't last long enough.

Spoiler

It was interesting to see, for example, the MC be part of a group "to be sacrificed" by his sect to guarantee its survival.

But later on, it simply ceases to matter. He manages to become super powerful, and he cultivates incredibly fast, and this makes the entire "Mediocre talent" pointrtless, as he is CONSTANTLY faster than anyone at cultivation. Moreover, in terms of power, he is above everyone else, as he becomes to consistently face people at the very least one stage above himself. It would have been more interesting to see a character forced to consistently use his brains instead. For example, make him find an "alternative" cultivation path that will allow him to gain an edge if used right. For example, make him a formation master, and use his wits to trap his enemies into inescapable situations, while keeping him weaker than his counterparts of the same cultivation levels in direct battles.

[collapse]

Another issue could be shortened very simply : "

Huh. That's... convenient."

However, there are still good points that aren't seen as often as I'd like.

For one, the world feels "alive". Not everything turns around the MC.

Spoiler

If I were to give an example, around the end, once an immortal comes down in the Spirit Realm to use blood sacrifices to perfect one of his weapons, and bring back a "traitor" to the Immortal Realm, he is attacked by a group of cultivators, including one that the MC befriended beforehand. Well, during this battle, the MC doesn't arrive to save the day, they aren't fighting the Immortal for anything related to Han Li, in short, this entire battle isn't related at all to Han Li. And this is something good, because it makes us feel like the MC is but a fraction of the world, not the one thing around which everything revolves. And that's something I appreciate.

[collapse]

For two, there is some internal consistency. Although some things "conveniently happen exactly at the right time", there aren't that many unfired Chekhov's guns. There are, but not that many.

But there is ONE major issue with this novel.

It isn't due to the author, nor the translator. It's simply due to Webnovel.

The Immortal Arc is licensed by Webnovel, and they simply dropped it after 60 chapters. So we will probably never be able to get a proper complete translation of the novel. And that's a real shame. Although, it will not enter in my rating, you need to know that the quality translation stops right as the Spirit Realm ark closes.

Overall, it's a good novel, if you're ready to accept a slow pace. I'd rate it 3, 5 if I could, but seeing as I can't, I'll roud up to 4. <<less

For all its weak points: awkward and very superficial character interaction, extremely lucky and unlucky encounters on a daily basis and sucky romance... this is still one of seldom novels that create a background world that seems capable of existing even in the MC's absence - it has lore and a culture that develop to showcase the vast difference in power between cultivation realms, which for once are appropriately hard to climb.

A good point is the author takes his work seriously and doesn't forget what he wrote a few... more>> chapters back. <<less

As of this review, I have read up to Chapter 389.

World building is A
Cultivation Rank is roughly the same as other similar novel (too similar in fact)
Personality Building is A
Inter Relationship with Minor Character is never dull, so another A

But why is it rated 3 star?
For just one reason, it is by far the most insanely detailed novel I've read, similar to how you waited 5 minutes for Son Goku to cast his Kamehameha.
Sometimes it's a totally useless description which does not improve the plot line (because some of them die the next chapter when the author takes his times to mentioned the villain in detail in the previous chapter).

Nonetheless, it's a fun ride. I would still read this to the end and come back to rate this review again once the translation is done.

It is no 1 for a reason.

When I first thought of reading few years back, first few chapters put me off.

When I read it now, I felt bitter why I didn't read it in first time. Its way too good after you pass 100 chapters.

... more>> This and Grasping evil are the two novels I highly recommend to thirsty readers who are searching for good read.

Compared to these two novels other novels will feel sub standard and bleak. Even the likes of Issth, Atg, ST, cg, warlock of Magnus, and much more are beneath these two. That's how much I highly regard them. <<less

This is just a xianxia. It does not have much originality nor does it bring many new themes to the table. Instead what it does is make an fantastic xianxia story. Like many have said, the first fight with the villian is amazing, about 4-5 chapters long, longest fight so far. So detailed, so many twists and turns and just a respectable villian. It brings xianxia themes and makes it flow amazingly despite not repeating anything (so far) as xianxia has many themes which makes one wonder why other authors... more>> repeat so much.

Just think of an amazing xianxia novel, with an MC not strong (he isn't strong and isn't seen as strong by others) but nor is it a torturous one with an MC with nothing who can't do anything until he gets this amazing ring with a 4 million old martial master who has everything needed ever. Instead he gets a vase thats speeds up the growth of plants, thats it. And yet using that to make pills, using his wit to play with others, using his logic to not be the knight in shining armor, he makes for an amazing MC that is just downright likeable. Also it seems to have romance but so far it hasn't developed so far but has suggested a partner. But I couldnt care less, forgot about romance or any other wanted themes when you realise how good this is anyway.

Bad thing: The only bad thing is that the author skips some possible arcs. When you think about the possible arcs he skips, they are always ones that were bound to be boring and repetitive as it is similar to something he has written before or just boring. So why is it bad?

Because he builds them up too much. Not a lot, but too much for an arc you will just fast forward anyway like the MC's journey to the first villians homeland. It was good apart from the fact that the fight lasted less than 1 chapter. Apart from that, very good novel. <<less

One of the better reads of Xian Xia I have come across, this Xian Xia is based on how an ordinary person managed to make it into the cultivation world. Most protagonists of this kind story are based on heaven-defying luck and innate talent to the point that it is unbelievable even for a fantasy and only seemed possible if it is written as a book. Not to mention that the antagonists are usually flat out used as the villain with no other purpose that to be evil and as... more>> an obstacle instead of being known as an actual person. While it is still a good read but it takes away a large part of the realism. A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality, in my opinion, managed these two aspects very well. While your MC does get a heaven-defying item but isn't overly reliant on it. Of course, all MC needs an unfair asset to be able to make it to the top, but it shouldn't be entirely fixated on it. The MC relies on both his intelligence and wits coupled with his heaven-defying item to make it. Yet it doesn't instantly make him instantly outstanding, little by little you see improvement. The pacing for his progress while a bit slow, but is very enjoyable to read through. The challenges and antagonist he faces are quite realistically shown as if it would be what an actual cultivator faces along the way, especially the antagonist. They all have their own motives for clashing with the MC, other than existing for the sake of being an antagonist. This is part of the most attractive details of the novel, as the characters in this story feature intelligence. A rare trait in most Xian Xia stories. <<less

If you are looking for a novel that has a pragmatic and clever cultivator that steadily climbs the cultivation world with a hidden cheat item then this is for you. The translator paces the story and tone very well and every chapter leaves you wanting for more which kinda clashes with the translating speed as reading is faster than translating. That is really the only downside to this novel is that you want more after catching up!

The thing I love about this novel is that there is actual character development... more>> and progression. Where you grow with the character and become investing in his actions and the consequences which unlike other novels doesn't end with clan annihilation and getting all the hot babes ;D <<less

I honestly need to start reading again and catch up cause I am beeeehiind, but before I do that I'll give you my impression of the first couple of chapters.

Before I start I of course have to say that this has the outline if the typical xianxia, but hey-- what xianxia doesn't? The important aspect of the story is that even though it is slow-paced it fleshes out in the long run. It covers things overtime and gas very few plot holes.

Overall it is an enjoyable read and gas aspects... more>> that make it unique. The MC's separation from the mortal world is extremely touching. He just doesn't suddenly become an immortal practitioner. He eases into it and it makes sense (sort of like how ISSTH's MC eases out of his mortal roots). The MC is thoughtful and he doesn't exactly remind of other xianxia MCs. I know people may say it's boring, but it puts bread on the table. Please check this out. Burrow through and you'll find a gem. Even if it isn't your cup of tea, I hope you won't ruin it for other people who may like it.

Enjoy and thank you for reading. *Hugs* <<less

This is a very good series with an interesting MC, cultivation method, and story line. The world building is very well done and sets itself apart from other xianxia novels in a meaningful enough way to feel as if you're reading something new and different. All in all, a very good read.

There is one downside to this novel and that is that the release time is long, the chapter length is short, and the pacing is relatively slow. As a result if following this novel on a release to release... more>> basis it can be pretty unsatisfying as very little happens on a chapter to chapter basis. I would recommend stockpiling this particular novel to read in spurts, aside from the short chapter lengths it's a fantastic story that has a lot to offer. <<less

It starts off alright, but gradually deteriorates. As of the second half of the story, it just becomes a load of drivel.

The author starts making up nonsensical races (Explosion race, Stone coccoon race, Crystal race, Cloud race.. Etc) without providing any context or explanation.

The story is repetitive, the protagonist is the luckiest unluckiest man in that world. Anywhere he goes, it always goes sideways in the most absurd manner. And yet, he always comes up on top for some reason.

The main love interest is the most boring and least fleshed... more>> out female character in the entire story. Random maids where more interesting. It also didn't help the romance itself was rather forced, and that she was missing from 90% of the story.

This novel is overrated, and most of those 5 star reviews didn't read it all the way through to judge it properly. I've read about 80% of the novel before I got sick of it and gave up. <<less

As with typical novels, starts off strong but gets a bit padded towards the end.

MC starts out weak (er) and develops reasonably smart strategies early on (assassination, quick kill) to offset his lower strength. Towards the end though, the best the author comes up with is he becomes King Kong and throws rocks. All the antagonists have fancy tricks but MC throws rocks??? (mountains).

The big battles are pure padding. The MC's sides idea of defense is put up shields and throw treasures. Period. Despite having a thousand years, their best... more>> strategy is to shield and throw stuff. Meanwhile the opponents put up traps, various troops, times their attacks, brings in reinforcements etc. MC's side is "let's relax and cultivate" and when the time comes we'll press this button and release something. Ooops fail? Yeah, who could have guessed.

MC is supposed to have super fast weapons but is constantly "shocked, I say, shocked" when EVERY opponents weapons seems to hit faster. Meanwhile MC's "SUPER FAST" weapons give the opponents time to take a tea break, throw up 55 layers of defense, teleport, while having a lunch break in between before they arrive. By the way, if you have a weapon that TELEPORTS, why teleport it 1000 meters away from the opponent then SLOWLY approach the opponent and give them time to have the 55 reactions and 100 defenses.

MCs approach to entering restricted lands - lets brute force our way through restrictions. Yup, sophisticated. Every problem is met with "hmmm... what happens if I punch it or slash it with a sword?" - and the MC is supposedly expert at formations and restrictions.

I get it - how else would EVERY encounter take 5 chapters. Throw out swords, throw out mountains (rocks!), punch, turn into King Kong, throw the same rocks, but harder. Then finally, ONE PUNCH MAN. This is the distillation of 2000 years of battling. Earlier on, the MC is smart, figures out weaknesses and does stealth kills but the later chapters is literally (not kidding!) turn into ape, beat chest, rush opponent and throw punches - for every single encounter. <<less

I'll distill the chief strengths and weaknesses of this novel (I completed the whole thing) :

  • Pros
    • Minimal petty conflicts: for example, the standard xianxia formula of MC offending arrogant young master at an inn or auction triggering escalating feuds with stronger enemies is completely absent. The MC is very cautious, ruthless and decisive and there are virtually no such random calamities striking him like this. He doesn't stick his nose in others business easily unless there are benefits outweighing the drawbacks.
    • Author's attention to detail concerning the past: there's a real sense of historical continuity in this series. even very minor characters and events that appeared thousand chapters ago might be briefly referenced in passing far later. I don't mean that they become unrealistically relevant, merely that a thought of such a character or event might flit through the mc's mind when it seems appropriate. for example, some random qi condensation disciple that he exchanged a few lines with might be wistfully recollected when the MC passes through the area countless chapters later. this makes his lived experience feel real and rewards the reader for sticking with the MC on such a long journey. I have read other cultivation where it seems whole stretches of his life and everything they experience are never again mentioned again once he advances to a new area or realm.
  • Cons
    • Lack of antagonists inspiring reader detestation: one of the selling points of cultivation is the comeuppance that hateful enemies get once the MC becomes powerful enough. these people could have seriously persecuted or hunted the MC or his loved ones or plotted against them at every turn when he was weaker. in this series there's nothing like that, there was basically no enemies that I got a cathartic release from seeing eventually destroyed. the mc's conflicts are focused on benefits and costs and don't arouse any feelings from the reader. there isn't a single memorable villain besides maybe the one from the first 50 chapters...
    • Unfulfilling war arcs: this is related to the earlier point but there are a number of war arcs the MC is involved in that are boring and conclude unsatisfactorily. the MC never actually deeply harms or ends up destroying the opposing faction. instead, on several points, the trope of having a new, greater thread binds old enemies together. that isn't very fun to read. after reading countless chapters of a bitter conflict where numberless of mc's allies have died, suddenly, MC and his remaining allies join with the enemies to fight the new menace. this happens SEVERAL times. there's no sense of triumph for the MC as a result of these war arcs.
    • Pacing issues: the time it took before the MC ascends to the higher realm was simply far too long. everything felt a bit rushed near the end.
Overall, this is one of the most consistent cultivation novels I've read. There aren't any big dips and rises in quality.... more>> I mildly regret reading it because after having finished it there are no standout moments that will stick with me. But it was a fine reading experience. <<less

A somewhat slow-paced novel with an interesting take on the journey of a "struggling" cultivator, and quite the wasted potential.

As the title very accurately indicates, the novel narrates the journey to immortality of a young cultivator, "who was non-other than Han Li." The author sets the stage for a main character who, because of his lackluster talent, has to cut all ties to the secular world and avoid any distractions which might stray him from his ultimate goal, a premise that would have made for a very interesting story where... more>> it brought to fruition. Unfortunately, the struggle which should have been the focal point of the novel disappears early on, with the main character becoming the greatest talent the world has ever seen, making all his so-called "sacrifices" feel superfluous at best.

Whether it is his decision to focus solely on some "basic", passive techniques (which of course end up being overly powerful for some reason) or his extreme dependence on treasures to compensate for his "lack" of talent when cultivating advanced techniques, taking away the thrill of seeing the character improve himself; or his lack of commitment to any organization or people who might "tie him down" and distract him from his goal, completely detaching the reader from the world and almost all secondary characters, makes for an unsatisfactory resolution given there is no reason for any of it, and while some of these elements change during the second half of the novel, it is difficult to justify over a thousand chapters of blandness.

The Good:

  • An interesting take on the cultivation journey, with the main character being solely focused on his ultimate goal.
  • An expansive world that feels far more real than usual.
  • While fleeting, most characters have strong motivations and schemes of their own, avoiding the average "evil villain".
  • No underlying plot moving the events forward, just the main character's journey in a living, breathing world with its own problems.
The Bad:

  • Artificial detachment to most things and people in the novel because on a premise that isn't there.
  • Lack of development on secondary characters who are but fleeting in this novel.
  • The plot is quite forced at times with never-ending "chance" meetings with characters of his past, a lot of fortunate encounters, and piles of treasures presenting themselves at his doorstep.
  • No underlying plot moving the world forward
  • The lack of an underlying plot enhances the blandness of the first half of the novel.
  • Immortal arc in a different novel.
If you are looking for a long, slow-paced novel to sink into or some different take on the usual cultivation novel, give it a try, but be ready to invest a lot of time into it, without getting much of a reward from it. <<less

It became unbearably boring.

Most CON is : Lack of combat, there is no combat actually. All about shitty treasures and talismans. Everyone throws some talisman or treasure to other one. Very poor battle themes.
Other CONs: It becomes so repetitive, Run, time shift cultivation, run, boring fights, run etc.
Limited places, it doesnt give adventure feeling, poor man-woman relationships.

PROs : No dumb silver spoon young masters, no s*upid conversations, narrating is okay also.

Thats it.

I give 3 stars for 1000 chapter reading time

After reading RMJI, I couldn't help to look down on other xianxia novel.

Although it's slow-power-developing-journey,

BUT the cultivation technic, the pill concotation, magic tool refinement, formation skill and all other abilities, non the other MC of other wuxia/xianxia novel could beat this novel, which is more realistic then those 'Quack-op-mc'.

... more>> In those other stup*d novel, their cultivators mostly involve with Mortal-Mundan Poltical Faceslapping Drama along with Brainless Cannon Fonder who is so boring with their life, repetitively throw away their live.

Also, their MC who cultivating to become immortal, but they are still CORRUPTED with "Nomal Mortal Needs" like harem *eyeroll*

Seriously, if it was I to become like those MC, all I hv to do is to fcuk here and there, 'Breeding my lineage' and spread out allover 3relam, Then, all together go kill all cultivators/ immortal/ god and turn my clan to Rule all over 3relam including heaven*huahuahaa* (sarcastic laugh)

Ehem.. Ok.. Back to RMJI, I enjoy so much reading the MC journey. Although HanLi is strong, a but he never OP all the time. There's quite few his fighting filler turn out unpredictable. He never feel ashame to flee away from the fight. To value his life, to know his limit, and make a comeback after he strong enough, This what I call 'smart'.

Some might complain this 'journey' are to slow, but if to think logically, to cultivating to become an immortal never be easy, even for us, a Normal human common sense. <<less
