Skyfire Avenue

Description

Skyfire Avenue is a street that is 2048 meters long. There are 168 stores here, and each of the store owners is an extremely powerful adept. The Avenue does not permit any vehicles or any robots to pass through it, much less mecha. Even the patrolling police must move about on foot. This is because this is a street for pedestrians, a lane for nobles, hidden away within this high technology world. Lan Jue, the greatest of the mercenaries, code-named ‘Zeus’, has secluded himself here in Skyfire Avenue after the death of his wife. The name of his shop is “Zeus’ Jewelry Store”, and here in Skyfire Avenue, he has been given the title, Jewel Master.

So I tried out this novel because of the romance aspect of this action novel... I honestly didn't like it. Sure, I only read a little of the beginning, but seriously...

SPOILER ON THE ROMANCE! (from what I read so far)

Spoiler

the MC gets with his dead wife's sister... to me, that is just messed up. Plus, the story keeps emphasizing this depression of losing her, so I feel like he is just with her because of guilt and to satisfy his own needs with the same face as his lover. Granted, he will most likely eventually come to realize that they are different people, but that still isn't right for me for him to be with his sister. In the beginning the MC was talking about all this love for her so I at least hoped that the author would reveal her to at least have lost her memory or she has gone missing but is still alive... and not go for a random sister of hers.

as a result, I dropped this <<less

At first, I didnt really wanna read this. I was very skeptical. In fact, up till now, I still have read the first 50 (?) or so chapters. But I gotta say, I love this! The only downside is there are so many awesome women who seem to love him, but theres NO HAREM!! Oh well. Love it anyway.

The storyline and is great and apart from the MCs lack of assertiveness with women due to his 'gentlemanly' and 'noble' nature, I find the characters quite endearing as well. Definitely recommended.

My second review, couldn't hold myself. This is a hidden gem. Screw Doulou Daluo or however it is written. This one is the best one he has produced.

First of all, to all wine tasting scene haters, sod off. I loved those chapters, including the first ones. For better or worse, the writer seemed to have some real literary ambition with this novel, something most xuanhuan/xianxia writers lack entirely. Well, a little at least. Those chapters give a nice backdrop to the rest of the novel and sketch the environment the... more>> main character lives in. No, this novel does not have the dry "Hello I am Lin Ming and I live in this sect this powerlevel and look what item I found o my god im going to cultivate so fast" start.

It has a red and tasty start ;-).

Rich characterization, the most and best focus on the life stories of other characters who play a big (or smaller) role in the story. Well-executed romance (thank god for that, most Chinese novels suck at this, especially in cultivation type novels), great humor through character interactions. Realistic and interesting interactions between fleshed out characters, in a Chinese webnovel? That cannot be true! And the way it is written... well, of course it's translated so I don't know how the Chinese holds up, but the English translation is of high quality (with very occasionally a missing point or "cuz" instead of "because") and the writing style is one of the best I've seen in a Chinese novel. Really, of all translations I've read, this is one of the only ones that make me enjoy the reading not because of what the words mean, but also a bit because of how they are written, how scene after scene is portrayed and how events play out.

Possible bad points: some unrealistic scenes or situations (like at the very beginning, after the wedding, you'll know what I mean), and for the first 150 or so chapters I didn't feel drawn in by the main character. I don't exactly know why, possibly because the main character gets less attention than in other Chinese webnovels. All the above good points kept me reading however, and I'm glad I did. Last possible bad point: the ranks, levels, disciplines,... (cultivation and such) don't get much explanation.

To be honest, I did not think a lot about the plot. It's probably excellent for the most part. Oh, whatever, I was enjoying all other aspects like the character interactions too much.

Edit: later on, plotwise... I do not like the "final enemy" "hurrdurr aliens" direction the plot went into. Still rate it 5/5, but that is on NU, where everything gets higher ratings than deserved. For real, probably 4.3, points subtracted for plot and some small things. <<less

So, TJSS is my favorite xanxia author. And this novel, may be my favorite so far. Incredible character development. Wish the romance was less suspenseful and a little more fulfilling, but other than that. I'm completely at peace with it. This book actually teaches you a ton too. I've never wanted to go on a wine tasting expedition as much as I do now. Or wear a crisp, handsome suit with complementing colors, lol. It's also probably the only Mecha related fantasy I've really gotten into and wished to live... more>> in. Mecha stories that I enjoy are one in a few. But by far, as with so many of TJSS's MC's, he is one of my favorites. Read this novel, and please take the time to enjoy it. It can get long and dragged out. But it all has a purpose, I promise. <<less

Lore and setting is great but it centers around romance. I don't get it. It bad for a romance especially with the main characters. I don't get why its so hard to people to do romance maybe because... Light novels, anime, manga, etc writers have a common flaw. Its funny in other light novels with evil or crazy low moral characters seem to not try to f*** the girl who is family with some one the love or use to, but somehow this so called perfect noble high of all... more>> men will r*pe (I understand its a mistake) her, but after will try to pursue and use her as a replacement. Even the evil monarch and other novels with low moral main characters will never do this. Instead of saying ur my late wife's lil sis, so I will be ur older bro. Nooo he's perfect but ignores that a basic thing that humans do a least loyal and good ones. He completely act like they isn't related.

The lore and setting in the light novel is amazing, but like others say the contradiction with being perfect and doing something that's shameful is dumb, the dialog is weak, and the details of the battles leave much to be desired. I gave up on it because the whole story is based and mainly focus on romance between perfect him and his wife's lil sis. Also in the story its easy to see what the MC is doing but when it comes to the two of them is horrible just horrible I don't know what the writer was thinking. Don't believe the excuse about people only drop because its slow. the real reason is because that. If the story is focus on the interaction of the two and its horrible and annoying it will feel like your reading longer than what it is. <<less

Really recommended this novel, dont mistaken by slow pace on early chapter. Because after a bit the plot and pace became better and better, and not only this genre bit different because it has mecha, superpower (like flame, lightning etc), and this book teaching like moral, knowledge too. And MC on this novel not that OP because he still have enemy on higher level even until end on the novel. And as I already finish read this novel, I really-really recommended this novel because it has few unexpected event/plot, not... more>> boring, and this novel not really long because it is only around 900 chapter. And from what I see this very well ending without prolong or unnecessary chapter, it just like from very begining of this novel created the author already set the whole story with ending. <<less

People don't seem to like the noble parts of the story and I think that's sad. Most of those parts are integrated into the story very well and shows off the best of TJSS's writing style which is my favourite of the famous chinese authors (second maybe to Er Gen). It just seems childish that you could read a well written part and label it useless when it is filled with the author's intention to reveal the knowledge and nobility of the characters compared to other characters.

Another novel done! This is my second novel by TJSS, the first was Doluo Dalu. It's quite the awesome piece. I'll break the review into several points, every points are rated between 1-5 stars, every novel start at 3 stars and goes up or down depending on the pro/con. TLDR at the end

    1. Story (The numbering system is messing up my paragraph...) (5 stars)
This novel is not your typical Chinese novel where the MC grows from weak to strong. The MC here is already strong and living his life as part of the upper echelons of the society. This is very rare, usually found on Japanese or western novel more often and it comes as a positive influence on this novel.

This kind of perspective give a fresh approach to a cultivation novel, there's no "big clan hunting you down for treasures" because MC is the big clan, nor there is "Young master got offended, die!" because MC is the young master.

Add this with a modern world background that depicts our civilization in a star-faring era, mecha combat, and even some gourmet experiences, wow, I'm quite taken by the story, especially when there are almost no good Chinese mecha novel.

If there are some things that can be a minus for this novel is how frustrating the romance is. How the relation goes between men and women on this novel makes me want to scream "What are you doing?!" several times. That also goes with how idealistic the MC can be sometimes, frustrating. I can see how it helps propel the story forward and with how the story interestingly unfold, the frustration kinda vanish into the background, still it really lacks that bit of finesse from the author.

All in all though, the pros outweigh the cons, it's a full 5 stars from me

2. Main character (5 stars)

Simply put, Lan Jue is an apex cultivator, living in a community where the top gathers, Skyfire Avenue. His background is a spoiler, so i'd keep quiet about it. I can't say I like the MC, but not for the writing, but for how he wants to keep everything under his wings, it made for a frustrating moment sometimes. He's your typical "good-side" MC from any novel.

There is not much cultivation going on in this novel since the MC barely needs it, that gives more highlight to the MC. In the novel the MC will run around doing things that people with time will do, it really gives quite a flavor to the MC.

The writing is quite consistent and there is no big flaw. I got no complaint for the MC, 5 stars

3. Side characters (4 stars)

The fact that the MC is surrounded by strong people made the side characters have a bigger room to grow. While in most novels those people got left in the dust, the side characters here stays for quite some time. Just like most western novels where power level barely exist, the side characters here are fleshed out and take some of the spotlights even until the end of the novel.

Villains are not exactly villains. Most encounters are about power struggle and politics, which is understandable because MC is part of an apex organization, so I never really felt that the villains are evil or anything like that.

Even so, toward the end things got a bit out of hand. Enemy will pop out of nowhere in droves, which is a typical mistake an author made to dramatize things. It's illogical and I have to take out one star from the score

4 stars

4. Battle (4 stars)

This also includes cultivation, techniques, treasures, etc

I like the battle in this novel, TJSS can make an interesting battle flow so I never felt that the battle is long winded for the sake of word count.

But I hate how the moves are barely explained, since the novel doesn't highlight cultivation, the moves do not have a special meaning to it, it's just names with varying scope, speed, and sometimes power to jump level. Basically it comes down to cultivation level.

Treasures are also almost non-existent. Well, there are some, but it's also just names, the difference in power mostly comes down to having it or not having it.

What comes out special for this novel is the Mecha and insterstellar combat. It's not exactly what I'll get from a military novel, but it's quite decent. The mechas are interlinked with the cultivation so you can see some actions by the MC from behind the c*ckpit. The interstellar ships got more actions toward the last quarter of the novel.

So despite of the simple side of the cultivation this novel does bring a good amount of action, 4 stars

5. Ending (3 stars)

The ending is a bit abrupt. I knew it was going to happen, but I didn't expect that it'd be solved that way.

There is one cool-down chapter and one epilogue chapter. not super satisfying but it's okay.

Well... It's okay, 3 stars.

TLDR

4 stars.

It's a very good novel, it has a great fresh story, great characters, and battle scenes that entertain you. It's the kind of novel that you don't see often in the Wuxia scene with its integration of mecha and starships.

The story starts at the upper part of a cultivation, not the bottom like most novels. And while it gives readers the chance to see what it's like to be "the big clan young master", it also lacks the deep exploration of the cultivation world. It's not that big of a minus because it got covered by the more modern combat form like that of mecha and starships. It's not a superb military nor cultivation novels, but it's a jack of all trades.

I wish it got a better exploration of both the modern and cultivation world. Also a better, more satisfying ending. But at the end, it's entertaining, and only 900 chapters long. Do give it a try.

The good:

  • wine connoisseur chads enjoying each other's company & looking down on pleps
  • mecha's are fun
The bad:

  • reading on an empty stomache
  • plot & narrative gets predictable and kind of silly towards the end
  • I'm not a fan of misunderstanding type bits of humor, where the protagonist gets harassed by a certain woman until over halfway through the series. Protag could've resolved it whenever he wanted but deigned not to.
  • female lead is boring

This series was good up until the current and probably final arc. It captivated me at the beginning of the series when it talked about food, wine, and whatnot. It becomes less interesting as it shifts to action and war. Like most other wars that happen in mainstream manga (Naruto, Bleach, Magi, etc.) no one important can die (as of chapter 847) or probably will die because it's what mainstream is. There's also plenty of bias in here. Where is the bias? Being a Chinese author, Tang Jia San Shao... more>> divides factions into the East, North, and West, being China, Europe, and USA respectively. If you read just a bit into the novel, the latter two factions just deteriorate while everyone from the East literally suffers from nothing. No corruption, no casualties, nothing bad essentially. It's where my interest starts deteriorating until this current final arc where it just drops off. I'm only skimming it to finish it, because there's no suspense and the author already has established that the East wins in the end and everyone lives happily ever after. <<less

Review of Ch.143.

I’ll give new readers a heads-up. Unlike the author’s other works (eg: Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Douluo Dalu etc), imagine a futuristic setting, crammed with all sorts of luxurious trivia that you can get from glossy, premium magazines whose target audience is the rich and famous (there are some magazines/journals in the world that are only distributed to high end card members, or even by invitation only. You can only get their publication if they invited you to get it). Minutia about cigars, wines, food, architecture among others,... more>> and paragraphs of historical and technical descriptions abound; instead of reading about cultivation techniques, skill characteristics or weapon descriptions that you commonly associate with other Chinese novels listed in this site.

It gives me the feeling of reading about a super spy or Bruce Wayne/Batman-like person who is mingling with the rich and powerful, a super-spy/assassin-like figure who hides his myriad skills and background behind a facade of a classy, suave upper-crust society man. Every scene is constructed to give you the impression that we’re reading about about beautiful people who dress, eat and drink well.

The MC also reminds me of Tony Leung’s character from the Hong Kong movies Tokyo Raiders and Seoul Raiders, wherein he plays a know-it-all, problem-solver, trouble-shooter for hire who assembles a bevy of gorgeous and loyal women as part of his team.

While some might get turned off by the pretentious descriptions of luxury, others might enjoy the attention to detail. The bizarre first meeting of the MC with the leading heroine might also be disturbing to some, as well as the ease she had brushed aside his transgression seems unbelievable.

The sheer jumbled setting can be daunting: esper-like powers, mecha, angels and demons, space ships, simulator/virtual combat training, a academy/university teaching environment, various women from the entire spectrum interested in the MC, factions, organizations and space governments... it’s like a Chinese version of the various Tenchi Muyo series: a mish-mash of unique individuals who are Super Awesome Friends with each other.

Now, if you ever wish that Tenchi showed a bit more decisiveness regularly and more of the bad-assery than just in the pivotal moments of that anime, you’ll find it here. <<less

MC kidnaps someone who 'looks' like his wife, r*pe her while she's suffering by aphrodisiacs, doesn't realize she freaking isn't her wife or that she's virg*n until she points it out? And their reaction to all of this feel like a prank was done to her at most, with 'glaring' this or 'glaring that'.

[collapse]

Spoiler

As someone who loves romance, tragedies, despair, drama and similar things, I'm maddest about MC seriously mistaking someone for his wife. It makes me so mad. It's not like she was the wife's twin, her reincarnated soul or a clone or similar, it was her bloody younger sister. I'm seriously indignated by him not realizing it wasn't his wife until she had to point it out... by showing him she was a virg*n prior the r*pe. This means he wouldn't have realized if not for that? Haaah?

It flows all so... natural I had to reread it just in case I misunderstood. Like, is this common occurrence? Like picking up flowers on the road? Is my common sense dead? Nevertheless, I felt revolted by it. <<less

Gay friend who loved the MC knew his shitty fiancee planned to kill the mc's lover, does nothing to stop it and acts like he's a victim, and begs him to forgive the killer. MC forgives him because of muh brotherhood. One of the girls that loved him since childhood helped plan his lover's death and acted like a sympathetic friend the ENTIRE novel, just to think she can redeem her disgusting self by sacrificing herself in the end. MC literally only felt attracted to the FML because she's the "sister" of his dead lover (clone of sorts).

Ya, this novel is a prime example of a decent start, an okay middle and horrendous end that ruins the overall novel. I really don't recommend reading this garbage. <<less

Took a while to get into this world of sci-fi and nobility. Felt like jumping into a story that was mostly done. With the MC already near the peak of cultivation, yet suffered a huge loss along the way. Now sequestered from his hero's journey and settling down as a noble mentor. A pleasant surprise, as it is nothing like a typical Xianxia WN full of: trials, lucky chances & some sacred treasure that speeds up cultivation.

Nonetheless it kept my interest in the earlier chapters, when there's barely a plot... more>> to speak of and in the later chapters once the plot arrives. Although it would have been nicer for the Alien threat introduced later into the story to not be so 1-dimensional. With there being a fair amount of romantic relationships in the story, it also would have been nice if the female characters came in more than 2 flavours (Jade Beauty & Hot-Tempered). <<less

Short but very entertaining novel. This is the type of novel I will totally recommend to my friends. Overall, the story is good and not too predictable. It doesn't just revolve about one person just like most novels. No harem but MC has a lot of pursuers, a big plus for anti-harem community, and most of most, MC is not too overpowered.

I've had a good experience with this author's previous works such as DD and was looking for something nice to read while I go through withdrawal from only having 2-3 chaps a day from my daily reads, and here I find this little gem in my to read list. After glancing at a few reviews saying to stick with it, I start reading it, and yes, it starts very [painfully] slow but it does it for a very good reason. Rather than saying MC is this and that the author... more>> spends the first 6-8 chaps showing you how the character acts and reacts to events, treating you like an intellectual rather than a side-glance who's here for a quick show. I'm only 50 chaps in, and I can say stick with it, I didn't know what I was getting into but I feel like I just got caught with my pants off in public by how surprised I am by the quality of this writing! I'm only 50 chaps in and I've already been moved to tears by the MC's speech (you'll know what I mean when you get there) and words cannot explain my admiration for this author's eloquent way of putting things.

;tldr; to anyone who is hesitant about this work, stick with it for id say 15-20 chaps to have a really good feel of how things are, chaps 1-8 are setup and it only gets better from there ;) <<less
