The first few chapters I nearly wanted to drop this: "Ah, the MC is gimping himself! What an idiot" Alas, the idiot was me. Mt. Tai was right before my eyes but I failed to recognize it.

This story takes our flawed protagonist through his path of becoming the ultimate orc warrior, with manly brotherhood, manly bonding, manly honor, and manly manliness this is a definite recommendation! Give it a read.

Finished the novel, only one thing to say: Bul'tar!

A typical Chinese theme flattened on a imitation level of a Korean plot.

Feels like walking in a muddy withered Forest for the sake of getting mud in your boots. With, dry trees in plain day light narrated as a menacing possibility that times get moved by a light wind, sitting in the view here and there labeled as plot.

The guide is the main character, amused by rocks, ie NPCs acting on conventional values that quickly turn into bromides. Tormented by the always to come, evil of the always to come... more>> and detestable Human race.

Long narrations about any uninteresting story about the NPCs, there was never given a reason to care about a trivial NPC to such extent that merits the constant and lengthy narration given by the author.

The theme of the Novel is : the heroic role of protecting your angelical and adult sister as a hopeless Target of human mischievousness; lust and Injustice.

The plot is :while discovering the advantages of role playing in virtual reality the MC slowly blurs reality in what easily becomes an adequate environment for escape and simultaneously unforeseen opportunity of treating his PTSD.

It's a stale adventure that started from an such meaningless idea as a poor developed little sister suffering an assgrab in a virtual world. I don't think that's a believable argument for a story about heroic actions.

To make the fear of his adult sister, suffering in a virtual world of potential foul encounters does not justifies becoming a obsessed undercover and uberpowered assgrab protector for his sister, nor defender of the metaphysical fictional characters or becoming a high level game player who's sole purpose and motivation is the likes of a military who doesn't distinguish the cons and pros of a technological enabled fantasy pastime from reality, a casual game addiction, no amount of conventional rationalization is enough to put an ex military dicipline to wasting his time worrying about what he probably think as "pretend games" going awry if he was really a soldier.

The story is not interesting enough and the parts that are well written show nothing in particular; the MC it's a normal soldier doing actions outside his believable spectrum most of the time, at the end of the day things happen to him, he doesn't actively seeks a grand goal. <<less

This is my first proper review so it's probably kinda ass, sorry. Contrary to how some of the other reviews describe it, this isn't at all another "typical VRMMO". The MC didn't reincarnate and know a bunch of secrets, he didn't unlock some OP class by chance, he didn't find some legendary item that trivializes progression or any other common trope. At the very least, there is absolutely nothing so far and I mean nothing, to even vaguely hint to this story following stereotypical VRMMO story plot progression. The story seems to be focused around the MC becoming emotionally involved with the world he has entered and instead of grinding experience and getting phat loot, he is experiencing genuine connections and relationships with the world, gaining allies and friends from both players and so called NPCS (each of which seem to have far more depth and personality than any players and supporting characters you tend to see in other VRMMO stories) and experiencing what can only be described as a genuine life within the game that is influencing himself in reality for the better, helping him to deal with his own mental issues which seem to be some kind of PTSD from previously being a professional soldier. Honestly, this novel so far is a very welcome breath of fresh air. If you're not hooked by the time he's

Silly plot, lots of plotholes, not much of a story here, just self fulfillment. I'm just going to list my gripes because this story is unbelievable. Go read BEM instead.

MC picks the worst class which apparently no plays because its a bug and/or they look ugly, out of the millions of players, the MC just happens to pick a class that everyone knows about but is not played, yeah no. MC has a sister complex because he was in the military (some sort of elite secret force) and wants to... more>> surprise her by showing up ingame as an orc (what kind of s*upid logic is that).

He met a girl in rl that he oh so happens to save while he was on duty, who so happens to be the relative of the CEO of the game he's playing. Saves his sister from her "friends" that got her drunk, and thanked them for it by paying for their meal. Compared to other players, he's like some god ranked player, but to other npcs he's nothing but a newbie. The reason is because he was in the military and knows how to fight (then so does almost every male adult in Korea, because of military training). Many of the players he meets ingame, happens to be female, most fall for him, and seems to live near him in rl. <<less

sleed's review really sums it up for me.

This entire novel starts when the MC starts playing a video game so that he can prevent his sister from being assgrabbed in said video game. Really? You have nothing better to do than play the same video game that your sister plays so that she doesn't get assgrabbed?

If this entire story was about the MC protecting his sister in a video game, it would still be boring. But it isn't. Instead - get this - it derails into the MC protecting NPCs... more>> - orcs - in game. He is angry and upset that video game players want to kill NPCs in a video game.

This is a bit like playing World of Warcraft and getting angry and upset that people are forming raid parties to kill monsters. I WILL AVENGE THE AI CONTROLLED ORCS IN THIS VIDEO GAME! Literally what the f*ck.

Nothing that happens in this entire novel is of any consequence whatsoever. An NPC dying is pretty much just a few numbers changing in a database somewhere if you think about it. The one interesting aspect, the advanced NPC AI, is not explored at all.

One review rated this as better than Reincarnator. I do not know how one could come to that conclusion. Reincarnator is about a hero trying to save humanity, this novel is about a store owner protecting his kid sister's ass from being grabbed in a video game turned into a player becoming some sort of videogame NPC activist. They are not even remotely comparable. <<less

Update as of Extra 4: Wow, that was a sharp drop in translation quality. Pretty sure it's a different translator from the original taking over the extra chapters. It makes me happy that someone is doing them, but sad that the quality isn't the same.

Update as of Extra 1: BUL'TAR!!! 8 Extra Chapters for some relief. T_T Most likely there will be no sequel now.

Update as of Story Completion. It was beautiful. From start to finish, it was an epic tale. I can only hope that the story is continued... more>> at some later date by the author. I cannot express how moving this series is. It makes your blood boil, your stomach twist, and your hair stand on end at the sheer emotion wrapped into the words. If you haven't read this series, give it a try, you might be surprised. If you've read some of it but ended up stopping, pick it up again, remember what made it so great. If you finished this story, I share your grief that such a fantastic story came to an end. This is officially my favorite translated story as of January 13, 2018, easily beating its way to first place past Everyone Else is a Returnee.

Grammar: 3.9/5

Story: 4.2/5

Writing: 3.9/5

(That Spark: 7.2/5 formerly 5/5)

(Update as of Chapter 101: Well, heart breaking implications aside, the story is finally taking that Dark Turn. It's 'Effing Dark' as far as I'm concerned. I've got that acidic bottom-of-the-barrel feeling going on worrying about the possible future this story is going to force my feels through.)

(Update as of Chapter 92: Still holds previous ratings, including that Spark.)

(Update as of Chapter 79: Getting that high from this story that can only be attained from true badassery. This isn't that forced conclusion bullsh*t that you find in most stories made by amateur authors. This is that good-good, spine-tingling, watch-the-world-burn-for-its-own-good kinda badassery.)

This story is truly an emotional drama. Honor, betrayal, revenge, and day-to-day life blend to make a story eerily alive. Existentialism, morality, and the human condition applied in a virtual environment make for a very interesting conceptual baseline in this series. The grammar is quite decent, with very few instances of awkward word/phrasing. The story is excellent in my personal opinion, only missing a deeper development of the characters and some world building. The writing is quite nice, with a decent pace, and quite a few situations to make you chuckle, burn with passion, and feel that sour gut-wrenching distaste for the human condition.

A story that is more centered on what it means to live rather than the game that is Elder Lord.

I personally recommend this for anyone looking for a Knight against the Evil World type story. <<less

So far I am finding myself really s**ked into this. The characters remind me of bits and pieces of what I really liked about my earlier times with Anime in the 90's and 00's.

So far the MC reminds me a bit of Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop. So far there is also some of the writing of the goofy/misadventuring side kick has a touch of that formulaic in a way I can appreciate.

I may be getting old, but the grit feels good and at the same time this pulls together... more>> a pretty compelling story. A differing part is that the MC feels like he has lived an actual life up to the point we jump in, not just pieces to get you to the story as it is today. <<less

Majority of those who rate below 2.5/5 does not have the right to rate this masterpiece.

Ignore those idiots.

They haven't even read more than 25 chapters, more or less and they think they know the quality of this, masterpiece.

I agreed that the Praise the Orc! have weak beginning, cliche story, somewhat edgy backstory and so on, but if you were to keep reading till, I really dunno, cause I'm already at chapter 196, you know that this a f*cking MASTERPIECE, alright maybe I'm exaggerating a bit but it so freaking sugoi~,... more>> in fact, Praise the Orc! can almost if not, it can be compared with the Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, except with better translation, not some half-assed google translate, it also depends on the reader taste.

The greatest part of this novel is that the feel, I cannot talk more about it without giving possibly a major spoiler to you all.

But I promise you one thing when you read the chapter where it catches up with the prologue, I promise you that it will be the greatest chapter that you will ever read, like holy shit, the hype, the feels is real. When you read that one f*cking chapter, that one.... f*cking... chapter, it feels like you reading Weed adventure but this MC had one thing that Weed didn't.

Honour.

***

"I am an orc, a warrior."

"A warrior doesn't forsake faith."

"A warrior doesn't persecute the weak."

"A warrior doesn't attack unarmed people."

"A warrior doesn't yield to injustice."

"A warrior doesn't shame the gods."

"A warrior pays back any favors or vengeance."

"A warrior protects the powerless."

"I swear to the gods, I will abide by these laws as a warrior."

***

I have three words for those who rated below 2.5 when they haven't even read past 30 chapters.

Are you alive?

and one more thing-

Bul'tar.

Only those who have read past 26 chapter will know the meaning of those 4 words. <<less

I wanted to like this. The concept is nice - the main character taking the side of the NPCs vs other players - but there are too many suspicious things about the game itself that I wonder why the hell the publishers actually released it for sale when they can't even check game logs (for example). Main character prefers being a loner despite women throwing themselves at him (and guys also wanting to be friends!), which is annoying, and the recurring theme of "people are awful" is something I already... more>> know. I don't need to read a novel about it.

Obviously, my problems with it are subjective. The writing and translation are decent so give it a shot if you read my complaints and thought "that doesn't sound so bad". <<less

This is the best Korean novel I have encountered. This is an incredibly moving journey and if you're looking for something completely different from what you've read before then I strongly recommend this novel. It deals with Virtual Reality in a way that surpasses what I've read in LMS which was primarily comedy and Ark which was more focused on action and I think the novel is better executed than Reincarnator. When I read Praise the Orc, I feel like I'm actually consuming something meaningful, but at the same time,... more>> every step of the way, I'm still enjoying it to the extreme and there's a lot of hype. The latest chapter even made me tear up.

Anyway, I don't want to sound overeager, but so far this novel is turning out to be unexpectedly amazing (and even the weird name gets cool after you understand its true meaning). The setting, the plot, the characters, the character development, the themes, and the wide range of perspectives and experiences that this novel seems to encapsulate makes it into something that I hope will end up as a true masterpiece. If you want to read something pragmatic that is also idealistic, something dark that is also measured in its philosophical views and themes then look no further!

5/5 stars

Edit: (7 chapters later)

The writing quality is actually still going way up. I underestimated how good this novel is. 5.5/5 stars. <<less

A good new addition to VRMMO genre... Plus, it is pick by goddess Turtle!!

The story is quite different cause of the MC where he is a retired soldier (YAY no highschoolers!) MC goal is not similar to most Korean MC with money grubber (cause of Weed sensation). Rather is just an overprotective siscon lol.

It is excellent read cause it not a copy to LMS like *cough cough ark. The story is unique and then rather game depended it displayed a world with VRMMO that has lot of possibilities in story.... more>> There is also psychological aspect (my faves) that represents a person with PSTD and how he cope with it using the game. It has a nice new aspect in VRMMO world using assimilation or how you're into the world.

Still at 8 chapters but It updates frequently so waiting if it keep up the good vibes

EDIT: DAMN IT"S TOO GOOD!! JUST READ IT!!

Want to see a person immerse in a world so beautiful all NPS seems alive. ORC are the MANLINESS BEINGS EVER MADE!!! BUL'TAR!!! A story with all rollercoster feelings, that shows what TRUE is HONOR!! <<less

I didn't have high hopes for this novel. I probably wouldn't have read it if it wasn't translated by rainbowturtle.

But since I trust in rainbowturtle, I started the novel. And I'm glad I did.

The VRMMO thing is pretty overused but in this novel I think both the real life and the game bits add to the story. It's really good so far.

Dropping it after reading about 30 chapters... Its like a much lesser version of LMS. same elements a broken class thought to be useless but starts becoming popular due to MC, a hard working lead with combat skills, bland male lead with of talks about honor in his head. Lead having orc as class, a loving younger sister, etc... Atleast lms had some comedy amd a proper goal. The MC is described as a former SF op but acts like a man addicted to vr for no apparent reason... more>> other than protecting <<less

Do you like upfront VRMMO game light novels?

If yes this is NOT for you.

This novel uses the game as a tool only, to unravel the concepts of psychology, the philosophy of being, and morality in general. The game is not the core of the novel.

If you are looking for OP one dimensional characters or weak to strong stories,

This is not for you.

The MC started as a War Veteran IRL hence some of his virtues and values have crystallized. Which ones? Thats the journey... what makes or breaks a character?

Praise the Orc.

I don't like korean novels cause they too short but that doesn't mean I don't read it. It's a fact korean novels are highly rated for some reasons. Some say the story is genuine or unique. Yeah! The story. Also, korean stories has no romance. Why! I mean how they're going to do that within 200 chapters! Yeah! Korean novels are just around 200 chapters, just SHORT! It's like I'm watching a documentary with monotone color. Some like it. Me? I guess I don't.

Now, praise the orc is... more>> indeed a korean novel. A VR MMORPG with orc! I like Orcs. I read the Masterpiece Legendary moonlight sculpture and thought these will be somewhat like it considering the tags. Well, frankly it was a total let down.

The story starts with IAN a former soldier now a cafe owner lives more or less to protect his sister. Now, there is this hotshot MMORPG popular and he doesn't play it. Despite people encouraging him to play it, he doesn't. Now, one day he hears that someone is picking on his sister in the game. So, he joins it to protect his sister. Wow, beautiful concept. He chooses upopular ORC as class and people call it creator's mistake!? Why? No one knows. Author even forgot that. This game is a reality where lvl 115 can lose to lvl 50 if that lvl 50 guy is a real life strong character meaning in real life he understand swordsmanship or martial artist or etc. And our MC is a former agent who killed in middle east. Good for him. So, he has a smooth starting because he understands fighting. He starts to think everything is real in the game like NPC and starts to idolize the NPCs. He learns life lessons from NPCs, goes on a strike because other users kills his idols and has his revenge for them. He goes on a journey with npcs not caring about users. He has his adventures with NPCs and the users are the losers! And he has a fan club cause he fights for NPCs against the users!? Then he learns that the game is a conspiracy theory as we all predicted and the game world is also real somehow. They he becomes the Hero in the game world and after defeating the last boss the 2 world merges and other world characters come to the real world to take over. And the loser users somehow get the power then be the heroes of this world. The End. I call it bullshit!

What happened to his sister? He never met his sister in the game not even for once. Why? The game is hard and his sister died to a rabbit and she got picked on by some users. And she quit. Then what's the point of MC starting the game in the first place. The MC went and rehabilitate those bully users! Fine. But, the sister already stopped. WOW!

Orcs are creator's mistake! Highlighted in the promo. Why? Orcs are hard? No, nothing said about that. Orcs don't lvl up? No, nothing said about that. NOTHING. Author just forgot about it totally

When you play a game you play with other users or a lone wolf! Right? Our MC tangles with NPCs and stay away from users if he can! This author sure is hikikimori or neet whatever the term is.

So with just NPCs MC goes to conquer humans, then warlords, then kings, then gods then Parallel world. All within 228 chapters. No build ups, no backstory. Just adventure, fights and climax.

MC is former soldier! What happened to him in the real world!? Nothing. Real world has no stories whatsoever and the total words count can be worth 5-6 chapters of nothing.

This VR MMORPG is conspiracy theory like SAO and the world ending is like Shura's wrath. Ripoffs. I have nothing against ripoffs but at least make it good. This was garbage.

MC is a character which remains hidden throughout the story. Only a smart one or two figures out the real identity of MC. Bullshit. Then no need to make it a VR MMORPG just make it a straight fantasy story.

The only thing that was good about this story was the word called HONOR. MC even though kills left and right he has bottom limits and fights for the good. Thats that. Had to scroll latter half. Bullsh*t waste of time. I don't recommend this to anyone and maybe I have to stop korean SHORT stories

PS: I judged this story unbiased. If the story is a masterpiece but not my type I will still rate it 10/10. And this story is my type but nothing but BS <<less

I couldn't sing more praises to this.

This is NOT not not like Legendary Moonlight Sculptor! Even if the start appears similar, the path it takes is just not like it! The way the characters develope makes this an entirely different story.

Of course there will be people who won't like it, but if you're fine with the usual 'OP protagonist rescues the world' plot, this one is a gem! (But be warned it isn't a casual, comedic read like LMS!)

I've read lots of novels with the MC getting arrogant and... more>> killing people left and right, but I actually really liked this one, just because he doesn't. I feel like the synopsis doesn't give it justice.

Our MC actually has a conscience, and I can tell why people follow him. If that were an actual person? I'd do the same. I don't want to spoil anything here, but you should try reading past the first few chapters. The beginning might drag, yes, but it just gets better. It's honestly one of my favourite stories.

An important point is that this story deals with a strong undercurrent about what morality is. When is it alright to kill someone? When is it alright to say you stand above others? Don't stop if you haven't even reached 50 chapters, is my suggestion. It's not the story itself that takes you, it's the characters.

We got an MC who is suppose to be a veteran soldier who is not really acting like he is at all; as a cafe owner instead of being a bartender that tropes go for. Who decides to enter a popular vr game after knowing that his sister could get harassed on this game by those who are strong, which should basically be obvious since the game was supposed to be rated 19+. Instead of stopping his sister from playing, he decides to stop his peaceful life to protect his... more>> sister from possible future ass grabs.

As a player he would pick the discriminated orc as an avatar just to surprise her sister. His battle mindedness and will, helped him conquer the challenges of the supposed hell path of that of an orc.

What really is a disappointment of this novel is the absence of warfreaks that should have exists which will obviously pick the orcs as their avatar. It might be bacause korean people are mostly wusses compared to other countries? But there should be others that should be like the MC or even better, and we know many of such people exists.

Also the advertis**ent of an orc with the vegetable and his other merchant jargons was clearly unrealistic. It was supposed to be funny, but readers who will really think would find such events a turn off.

Verdict: 3 (temporary)

I will temporarily end with as I am still early on and this novel could still redeem itself. <<less

Has a lot of similarities to LMS, making it fell partly inspired by it but I like it a lot. The characters so far appear to have depth and the game world is just level grinding it appears to be pretty interesting. The NU page doesn't currently have romance tagged but there seems to be a budding one within the first ten chapters and it's being done nicely. Based off the title I thought it would be something s*upid but so far I'm very impressed.
