First couple of chapters were great up until

Spoiler

The servant girl was forced inducted into becoming a disciple due to finding out she had supreme spiritual roots. Some master cultivators outside of a root testing facility spotted them on their way to eat something and forced them to take the root test. I think it was implied that they could perceive one of them having a good spirit roots and that's why the MC and female lead were forced. The problem lies in that the MC parents having died and spent all their money trying to open the MC's mortal root only to fail. Why did no one notice the female leads spirit roots before which would have solved their problems. It feels like the future chapters are going to have the damsel in distress cliche and have the female leads get taken away from MC which will lead to power ups and the destroy sect to recover female lead only for this to repeat again. It sucks as the story started out interesting only for this happen on the first 4 chapters of the story with it coming out nowhere. It would have been fine if it happened more naturally like the MC earning enough to test the female lead's roots and then deciding to join a sect or self cultivate. Instead they went with a bad cliche at start of novel to create conflict/drama.

[collapse]

P.S.

I just saw that this is was from the author of gate of good fortune. If you see any reviews on that story, you will find that many call it the gate of misfortune for many reasons,

Spoiler

The female leads always get kidnapped and have really bad things happen to them. It happens frequently in the story and I think some said that r*pe/NTR or death occur to one or two of the leads. I think some people who followed the novel said that some weren't really part of the harem but still, the guy gets no breaks. The story is said to be really good but it's the female kidnap cliche that makes people have issues with the story.

[collapse]

His other work, strongest abandoned son, was pretty good story and enjoyable to read but it seems that this xianxia might end up like gate of misfortune. As I just saw that it might be following the same path as gate of misfortune I will have to stop at this point in the story. If anyone is going to read this story, I would suggest you read the reviews on people who have read or completed gate of good fortune before deciding to read this xianxia (to see whether you don't mind those cliches). It could follow a different direction than GOGF but I would wait for more chapters to release to see if the story will be different than GOGF. Like I said, the writing is good but it's the cliches and the way they are delivered that put me off from this story. <<less

Had a good start but seems to follow the same pattern as the gate of good fortune... MC goes somewhere -> some random guy suddenly gets offended to the point where he has to kill the MC at any cost ->MC flees somewhere -> Repeat. In short, the author tends to create drama over nothing

After reading up to 500 chapter I can say this really is a sexist novel. Every male out there are evil, selfish and unkind whereas every female character introduced to us are pure hearted, intelligent and kind. There were some females characters who tried to kill MC but guess what happened, he gave them his loot and helped them get even more powerful. We later find out they were forced to do it since ladies just can't be naturally evil in this novel. Up to where I have read author... more>> hasn't killed a single female character despite their action against MC. Btw every male character with slightest bad intention are slaughtered. <<less

I don't know what the previous reviewer was reading, but the MC in this novel DOES offend everyone. He literally never knows when to stop, even to people who have literally never done him wrong.

its incredibly annoying and repetetive.

For instance, there is a scene where he books the only remaining hotel room at a hotel. I was completely expecting an arrogant young master to pop out of nowhere needing a room and then trying to arrogantly rake it from him.

Sure enough, it happened.

It's always frustrating when people only read the 1st 20 chapters and had the gall to write an undermining review.

That being said, this novel is actually decent. For me, it is solid 4 but I'm giving it 5 to offset the low ratings.

The MC for one, is a likeable xianxia hero. While he is still hot blooded, rash, he still consider pro and cons in everything. He is also smart and scheming. Most often than not, Xianxia's MC would always be potrayed as cunning and intelligent etc. But their actions... more>> are no more mature than a 12 years old pre-pubescent boy. The MC is also dilligent amd hardworking. He might be the most decent MC among all the xianxias and wuxias that I have read.

The side characters are also good. They actually have personalities. The antagonists, while still being the same like every other novels, are actually provided with good story backgrounds. For romances, based on what I've read up till now, it is not a harem. Even if the author suddenly decided to make it a harem, it would not be lousily made considering how the girls actually would have legit reasons to be infatuated with the MC.

Those who enjoys reading about crafting and alchemy might like this novel, as the MC is also good in alchemy.

This novel still maintains the original recipe of a xianxia/wuxia novel (plot armour, cultivations, sects, revenges) but it is certainly unique. For me, definitely worth the read. <<less

I am glad I pick up this story.
It has all the makings for an epic journey.
Although still a tab bit to early to rate, it hints at all the right stuff.

It's pretty obvious that the author has outlined and planned out the majority of the story.
- Less filler material
- Mystery interwoven into the plot, and desire to find out what happens next.
- Less jumping/missing scenes that ruin immersion
- Less blatant plot armor - more naturally written into the story.
The characters are really well... more>> done.
- Dialogue is above average, and meaningful.
- Characterization is colorful, and realistic
- MC uses logic and his reasoning is well explained... and fairly consistent.

There are some negatives:
- So far there hasn't really been much action.
- Author keeps mentioning technology, but finding excuses why it's never used. Its interesting, but also doesn't fit right. Unless the author has plans to use it more... until such time it feels like a poor gimic. <<less

Up until the couple finals chapters, this was a great read. Then the ending just threw everything into the tr*shcan. I wish I didn't waste 1230 chapters just to get that joke of an ending (if you can even call it that). Even if the author wanted to close out the story due to loss of interest, almost any random person could resolve the story better than that.

Due to that reason, I find it hard to recommend this novel to anyone. It's clear the author threw this into the gutter,... more>> and we as the readers should do the same. What a waste of time. "Open ended"? That's just the author being lazy tr*sh and coming up with an excuse for not being able to actually close out a story. <<less

Extremely boring and cliche start. At this point, I feel like I would beg the heavens just to read a story where the MC isn't forced to part with a girl who is close to him because he's 'tr*sh'.

How pathetic.

Even ignoring this, there's still nothing promising.

This has been a very enjoyable novel to read so far. It shows you how far you can get with a little bit of hard work and some common sense. The MC is smart or at least thinks like a normal person and has the "common sense" that other MC tend to lack in most of the web novels.

There is also no over powered cheat or anything that would suddenly make the MC super strong, rather its a gradual increase in strength (He does get a bit OP later on... more>> but there is always someone stronger then him). As for the story, its about the struggle that our MC who is just a mortal has to go through in order to become a immortal cultivator. To pursue his goals and to live up to his ideals he does everything he can and I really love that about this MC. He isnt rash and knows when to back out. He doesnt offend everyone he sees like other CN novels MC. He does start to get a bit more confident later on though but he is still very cautious with everything he does.

The story feels fleshed out, the world seems to be slowly growing and overall I really love the novel so far. Although I do admit that it has some holes here and there but for a web novel this has been a really nice read. Good enough to pass some time with. My rating for up to ch 144 would be something like.
Edit: ch 505

A refreshing novel which differentiates from all xiaxian novel. A quite realistic reincarnation story which does not make the MC seem like God with superhuman gifts but rather human specifically a scientist who got betrayed by his wife. In our current world we have wife/girlfriend who kill husband/ boyfriend for money (inheritance and vice versa), thus current plot still seem plausible. I believe Johnnycabra is wrong and bias to negative reviews mainly due to author's previous novel GOGF and here is why:

Spoiler

The previous reviewer seems too bias and easy to conclude in a negative way without fully understanding the circumstances that occur in the novel. His example in spoiler section did not mention that the individual who detected that the servant might have natural gifts was from a large sect and a elder and thus was more attuned and powerful enough to detect faintly her spirit quality in comparison to his father with no spiritual root (mortal root}. However, he still needed to get her tested. If it was that easy to detected spirit quality of humans, perhaps, there would not be any 'test'. Moreover, this is his servant not girlfriend or wife and definitely not the lead female character but his servant, to suggest his going go to destroy a sect because of a servant is absurd and ridiculous.

This a promising novel and I suggest all to read. 5 stars <<less

Disappointing to a point where it's depressing.

You will never get that feeling of awesomeness from this MC. Every end of an ARC and PLOT twist is disadvantageous towards the MC in the end. No satisfaction. Either in Romance or battle, MC always seems to lose.

Only a masochist would enjoy reading this. If you don't wanna feel bad about wasting your time, avoid at all cost.

I haven't read all the released chapters yet, but I feel like this is the time to write my review on this series as my opinion of it has taken a solid form.

First, I will start by saying that ratings on NU don't matter. The more you are caught into this the less you can enjoy the stories that maybe only 1 in 100 can understand. While some people have high expectations from each and every novel, others start reading them with a fresh mind accepting everything it delivers. And... more>> this novel delivers quite a lot.

The beginning of this novel brought a lot of new ideas to the table even though the formula it used had already been seen in more than 50% of the recent xianxia novels. A fresh protagonist with a calm mindset resembling the protagonist from Warlock Of The Magus World, with a decisiveness resembling the protagonist from Emperor Domination but with a fresh touch of mortality. This touch of mortality made every decision the protagonist took feel humane. Emotions that many other authors tend to discard like sympathy, loyalty or mercy have been present in this protagonist since the beginning, making him a person you can cheer on even if later on he starts changing as the world around him becomes more cruel.

Later on, this novel brings to the table something that has rarely been done well, a love relationship that sparked in the right circumstances. At the same time, the one that was more of a shackle to this story had became a distant memory that stopped affecting the progress of the story. Even more, the blandness of the protagonist once again becomes one of the aces in the author's sleeve as the protagonist refuses to move onto the multiple relationships path. The well created spaces between who can be a friend, a brother, a lover or a mentor are so well created that unless you pay attention all the time you would feel like they are too normal to be considered important when so many novel have done this wrongly.

Lastly, this novel doesn't create a one man army out of the protagonist, no, instead the story slowly raises his potential in a logical manner until he becomes capable of surviving in the places where cultivation can be done at its fastest speed. The protagonist matures, becomes a mortal striving for immortality, but nevertheless, a mortal at the end of the day.

Cultivation, pills, arrays and smiting, in this story you will get your own share out of everything and you will not be disappointed in any of them.

Good luck to future readers, and I hope you will be able to enjoy it as much as I am. Cheers to the translator who brings out chapters ASAP, and cheers to Qidian for sharing it with us. <<less

It would've been good if MC would not act controversially.

Why would you needlessly aggravate people left and right when you don't even have means to defend yourself?

Author pose MC as smart, but he always end up doing rush decisions, also incessantly create troubles for both himself and those around him

The rating should not be 3+ but around 4+, this is really a good story, In the beginning you thought it was just a strong MC with really thick plot armor, but you are definitely wrong, This novel has more sense than ATG, MGA and other overbearing MC. It is slow but this is really worth to read.

This has a lot of bad reviews and they all typically come down to one part near beginning which is basically just a plot device to get the MC to do something different.

Overall, I rather like the story, and you may too if you get past the first couple dozen chapters. Probably helps if you havent read GOGF.

The pace of the story is really good; he slowly builds his power based on his own knowledge and experience. This is especially different from many other Xianxia stories where the MC meets with some fortuitous event which catapults him straight to success. This story illustrates the capabilities of human ingenuity and hard work. The MC shows how as long as a person works hard, success is possible. Definitely a good read, and looking forward to more creative ways the author shows how a mortal can become immortal, and would... more>> definitely like to see him fight against other cultivators. <<less

I rated this series rather highly initially, but I've come back to update my review as I've now abondoned this novel. The series starts out with the main character starting out from a very low level for a long time. I was ok with this, as the writing was good, and it was interesting to have the early "weak" period in a "weak to strong" story take a lot of effort on the MC's part.

The author doesn't seem to realize that the main reason we can be patient with the... more>> struggles of the main character is for those "moments of awesome", when the MC triumphs over a rival, saves the girl, has a plan come to fruition, etc...

This novel is the story of an emasculated main character that spends tons of time powering up only to remain weak, never gets the girl, loses the treasure before he can use it, and has even minor victories negated into irrevelance by dumb shifts of the plotline. <<less

Where are the guns?! There's cars, ships, aliens, aircrafts, BUT NO GUNS?! Why is everyone waving swords and shooting arrows? In one chapter the MC states that if an arrow (shot by a mortal) landed on his head, he would die, so clearly guns would be pretty useful. Man I don't get these pseudo-modern cultivation universes. Everything feels so forced

Oh yeah, around chapter 100 you learn (for the first time) that the MC has a mustache. So uh that's about the level of visual information you get

I think people are mistaken, I have been reading this novel from when it began, mind you I was infuriated when he got picked on by other or brought trouble on himself, but that’s the plot—otherwise it would not be interesting.

I advise people to finish at least 150 ch before coming to any conclusion. He is not overbearing and sure he has his op movements but not every time. He uses external means such has a weapon of mass destruction to destroy them, even then it has its limits (ammunition’s).

The... more>> female characters are great, depressing, enjoyable and sad (unless you read you would not understand). The problem or should I say I hate the most would be him cultivating quickly!! Overall a great novel thus far and with regular updates (3 a day). <<less

Read the entire novel and I'm regretting. One of the worst novel ever written. Lame and rushed ending.

Heck I could handle the ending as most Chinese authors are bad in writing the final part. The problem is that even the earlier parts of novel are terrible.

Each arc leaves you with bitterness. There is almost nothing likable about the series. Fight scenes are boring, protagonist has no unique trait or interesting personality, female characters are one dimensional... and the world building was more than disappointing.

Unless you want to cry... more>> tears of blood I don't recommend you this novel. <<less
