“Obtaining the topmost degree of talent in sword arts in the world requires giving up 72 years of lifespan, which leaves you with only five more years of your life. At the same time, you will never be able to feel love, kinship, and friendship, and you’ll end up leading a lonely life until your death, unable to procreate, or to have any descendants.

“From now onwards, everything related to happiness in the human world shall no longer be of your concern. Are you willing to accept this?”

“Hahahaha, I’m already alone bereft of all support, my hopes dashed to pieces, shouldering only absolutely irreconcilable grudge and hatred, why would I disagree? Why would I not want it? I couldn’t ask for anything better!!”

His sword sweeps across the Divine Continent for seven days and nights, moving 90,000 miles through the starry skies, unhindered.

He slays saints and buddhas in Heaven, slaughters demons and devils in Hell, sweeping away all the grievances in his heart!

The story started with tension and a decent pace, but now it has slowed down. The MC's mom is dead, and he does not know who is his father. His family/clan treat him worse than crap, especially his grandmother. The grandmother decides to make him a s*ave for his more talented cousin. Yet, the MC wants to become stronger to still be part of the clan. The same clan that treats him worse than a tool.

Also, the mc's fortuitous encounter is a joke:

Spoiler

The MC did not run into a fortuitous encounter, the fortuitous encounter ran into him (unless it turns out to be his dad, because the encounter made sense). The MC gave up 72 years of his life for a skill, but compared to 72 years of his life, the skill is not that great. I am sure in the future, the MC will probably extend his life, but at the moment he has about five years to live. With the speed the MC is going, he will probably die before he accomplishes his revenge. All the MC does is train and attend a martial arts school.

When the MC gave up 72 years of his life, he also gave up his positive emotions, like kinship and friendship. However, he still feels like he is part of his clan, which makes no sense if he lost kinship.
Also, MC was caught by a girl and her clan, and was tortured and left for dead. One of the henchmen asked the girl if she wanted him to cut the MC's head to ensure he dies, but guess what she says? The MC wants to revenge, but seems to forget how he ended being caught. His so-called friend sold him out, and up to chapter 64, he has not mentioned her once. His so-called friend took money from the girls' clan to give them information regarding the MC.

It is not a horrible novel, but it is too boring for me to continue reading. <<less

Honestly? Though it had potential, it's not very good, and it gets worse over time.

What's cool:
MC runs around at supersonic speeds kicking butt.

Major problems:
It's fun to see stats, and to be able to compare levels and measure growth, but they're poorly incorporated. The author has trouble making the system work sensibly, leading to a series of inconsistencies that are difficult to ignore. The stats aren't reliable, and they may douse realism and adrenaline when mentioned during a fight.

What starts out as an interesting revenge story of an antihero... more>> becomes an absurd, overly violent Good vs. Evil story for toddlers. The MC gets slapped with the decision to be righteous and mete out justice to all the evil he sees, and the author fails at balancing that with the MC's coldness and desire for power, turning MC and story into one big mess. The MC has no realistic personality to speak of, only an omnipresent mash of impulses: to act and snort coldly while showing off while cutting down his enemies while being full of himself while having either a measure of precognition or whatever esoteric insight the situation demands.

Meanwhile, to make it clear that the MC's actually, truly a good guy, the author makes each enemy out to be unreasonably jealous of the MC and/or all "Truth? Justice? Friendship? They're ruining our empire!" and "Muwahaha! I love selling kids into s*avery!" Every enemy is either an aristocrat who invariably thinks that commoners shouldn't dare to stand on their level, etc. Etc., or has been employed or threatened by such an aristocrat to do his bidding. It's quite painful to read. The MC's buddies are all kind and patient, the MC's enemies are all rabid, selfish, and shortsighted, making one wonder how the world made it to the MC's generation without getting torn apart. The author will, however, periodically make a character switch sides at the drop of a hat, which will cause the character to jump from one end of the personality/intelligence spectrum to the other, with little in-between, time, or rationale needed. I think the author got a kick out of doing it once, and developed something of a fetish for it. <<less

Began brilliant, but declined as the story progressed. This is the type of story that starts out in the rather uncommon format of 'revenge without moral inclinations'. As in, the protagonist will be willing to go to whatever extent in order to obtain his revenge. Which was all executed in such a manner as to leave the reader heavily sympathising with the protagonist. Sympathising with his sacrifice, his apathy, and his ruthlessness.

And then, around chapter 200. Something earth shattering occurs. The protagonist completely forgets all the injustices he had suffered.... more>> All the betrayals. EVERYTHING! And instead he creates his own code of conduct. Eliminate all evil. This essentially means that the protagonist does a complete 360 in personality, he becomes an ambiguous hero. Not at the level of an anti-hero, but close. Perhaps the term 'low-end anti-hero' would be apt. He decides that by killing all 'evil' people he can make the world a better place, he thinks that he can save all the innocents in the world from oppression by slicing the neck of any dissident. So many characters lecture him of the futility. Yet, he still goes on to conduct his idiocy anyway. As the story progresses further, he becomes a typical Chinese protagonist. Not very much different from any other Chinese protagonist. Righteous. Hypocritical.

Recommended to avoid this story at all costs. Read at your own peril. High on deception this one. <<less

It's hard to say anything definitive about this, but it seems interesting. I'll edit this as more chapters are released (probably after the initial promised 30 chapters). Not much has happened so far, but the writing is certainly of high quality, and the characters are at least believable.

[edit]
Okay, now around 40 chapters in. It's kind of nice to have a main character that isn't always trying to keep their abilities under total wraps, and also to have someone who doesn't just kill with impunity. All in all, the MC has become rather matured. I am starting to become rather curious though as to how his revenge will finish. I just hope the author doesn't suddenly give him a

(This isn't an actual spoiler, it's just discussing something that DID happen in the book, and something I hope WON'T happen in the book.) Life extensions, since the MC is only supposed to have a few years to live, and that would take away the pressure from the story.

MC was the usual "thrash" at the start, but was hated by his grandmother because of some reason with his parents (maybe he was a bastard?) and she decides to ens*ave him to his genius cousin. MC tries to escape and in the end gets tortured by another group (after being betrayed by a friend) and left for dead. He sacrifices his lifespan to becomes able to train sword skills super fast.

I usually like game like settings + revenge and so far, I am enjoying this. The world building seems to be good, too early to talk about characters. Waiting for more chapters to update rating. My only concern is that he might end up forgiving his as*hole grandma due to "filial piety" Confucius ideas almost every Chinese story has, and if that happens, I will be super pissed.

Edit: It's everything I wanted it to be and has a great TL. Worthy of 5stars.

It's a decent novel, well written and it's good to finally see an MC paying a price for his talent, unlike Yun Che/Linley or pretty much any MC you can think of. The stats screen and job transition talk don't really pull you out of the story so that's good. Not sure how long it'll stay interesting as often promising novels revert to type but so far so good.

I've given 5 stars mainly because of how refreshing it is to see the price paid, otherwise it's probably a 4-4.5

Synopsis sounds rather generic but I was having high hopes as few Chinese translators were really hyping it.

But sadly it doesn't lives up to its expectations. Perhaps the translators wanted to sell the novel so they called it legendary in Chinese market. It just gets messed up in the generic pool. I guess it would be unique if MC actually dies and pay the price for the power instead of some random bullsh*t (not a spoiler as its stated fairly early on).

One of the few novels that could make me still interested after 500+ chapters. This novel reads like a Hollywood TV series.

FXJ is still racing against the time and his shortening lifespan. He still keep his no nonsense, not much chatter style. Several of his fight opponents became the series gag, distinguish ing this novel from other cultivation styled novel.

Update after chapter 900:
This novel is very deep in comparison with another cultivation novels. Up to this point, we have not been informed with who our MC is,... more>> who his parents are, why was he born, who killed her mother, or perhaps if our MC is really the good guy...? Perhaps he is one of the evil race?

The further e read, the more it get interesting, even the evil grandmother from the beginning of the story is kinda pitiful and not what she seems to be on the start of the story... Rather, there are reason why...

Even the way of upper level cultivation is very unique, MC not only focused on closing up, but he need to be involved in some mini game like adventure. <<less

Update: I'm now on chapter 564... this novel's now officially not worth reading. Go read more recent reviews to see why.

One thing I appreciate about this novel is the focus and the time-restriction. The MC is out to gain power for revenge against specific people for specific actions, and he has five years to accomplish it. He makes a Faustian bargain (or what seems like one) in order to gain the talent it will take to accomplish that revenge, but still has to gain the knowledge and skill required to... more>> take his revenge within the five year period of the bargain. The MC has a cold personality, is completely focused on sword mastery, and is on a time limit, so his actions are all focused entirely on his goal of achieving the power necessary to take his revenge. There are no friends, no romantic interests, and no cute comedic moments. Just grueling training and fighting his enemies all while under a constant sense of running out of time.

In terms of cultivation, there seems to be a dual system of magic and sword mastery. So far, magic hasn't played a role, but it may in the future. The MC's chosen path is sword mastery, and so far he has demonstrated a heaven-defying amount of talent in this area (this talent is due to the deal he made). Of course, this has led to enemies who are jealous and disbelieving of his talent and worth; other than the enemies who led to him making the bargain, who it seems are out of the picture until at least after his training arc, these jealous people are his main enemies.

I'm interested to see how long the author sticks to the current framework: will the MC suddenly no longer have to worry about accomplishing everything in the 5 year deadline? Will he start making friends and exploring romance? I'm really hoping the answer to these questions are no... <<less

A really enjoyable, straight-forward kind of novel. Cultivation makes sense, the MC is true to character, the MC is driven, focused and hard-working, and power-ups come with a price (the most refreshing thing I've seen in a while). I like the MC's personality and motivation, and I'm a big fan of his master, too. In terms of my hopes for the future:
Spoiler

I'm hoping the MC doesn't forgive his Grandmother. So far this is a solid revenge story, so if the ending to all of this turns out to be half-hearted I'd be dissapointed. That aside, I'm also hoping the MC's time remains limited for the sake of tension, and that at the end he asks himself if trading his life and half his emotions for talent was worth it. That would just add some nice depth to his character for me.

[collapse]

There isn't that much in terms of romance, and the comedy isn't exaggerated either, but the action is pretty good and you can really feel the desire for revenge that drives the story. If I have to give a flaw, I'd say the tone can be slightly dry? Something like that. Considering the emotional state of the MC, and the relatively shorter (or shorter feeling) chapters, I'm willing to let that one slide for now.

All in all, it's a story I can't put down, and I'm really looking forward to more chapters. I HIGHLY recommend this novel. Although I don't have many complaints right now, since the story is still in the early stages I'll go ahead and put this as a 4.5/5 stars, rather than giving it an outright 5/5.

Awesome novel, a true gem, and not the raw type. It is very polished, maybe even to well. Because only 201 chapters have been translated at the moment I wrote this review, I can't say for sure if the plot will remain as fragmented in the later stages, but at this point I can say for sure that there are many doors that have been opened but only a few closed. The good part is that all doors are well connected to each other without using some s*upid cliches. The... more>> bad part is that they all are very complex and require quite a long time to be closed completely for the plot to move on the next stage. Most of these doors have been opened because enemies act against the protagonist, yet the protagonist is not looking for problems, so the cause for these conflicts is by no means his arrogant attitude (even though he has it). The reason is, figuratively speaking, that he has refused all olive branches extended by any faction that require him to obey someone. But, once again, that is not without reason.

This novel manages to rise itself at the level of Ze Tian Ji when it comes to the high amount of information regarding a specific aspect of the cultivation world. In this novel the Dao of Swords is presented in it's all splendor through a well developed system that connects the body, the mind and the heart. Instead of relying on sudden enlightenment raising his power at an increasing pace, the author relies on experience and training to increase the protagonist's power at a steady pace. And this is, well, rare, as Xianxia has mostly defined what a protagonist using a sword should be capable of. The unrealistic expectations that many will feel towards the development of the MC may decrease the degree of enjoyment by a whole lot.

Another good, yet bad thing for some is represented by the intermissions between some important parts of the story. In a sense, the difference between reading this novel and a general xuanhuan can be represented as driving inside a city and on a highway. A general xuanhuan will increase its pace and never stop until the story reaches its climax, this is like driving on a highway. This novel instead will make sudden breaks to increase the MC's power and to help him resolve other problems that are like some side quests, this is like driving through the city and having to deal with traffic lights. If you don't have patience then you will never be able to enjoy this story.

At least, I don't think that there is someone who can't see how hard the author tries to make the personalities of every side character believable. Even the most moronic antagonist has some depth, and will not act without reason. As for the MC's personality, the author managed to simplify everything through the prologue. Like this we get an enjoyable protagonist that won't mingle too much with other people's problems unless he has something to gain. Still, this personality always creates tension even between allies, which may annoy some people.

Lastly, to not bore the sh*t out of you, I can tell you at least that there is a sudden twist for the protagonist's progress that I haven't seen in a long time. And for what it looks like, the author will not shy away from delving deeper in this twist instead of eliminating it swiftly.

At this point, I will repeat myself, the only true problem of this story is the MC's personality which understandably creates more and more enemies. And now I will repeat myself a second time and say that there is reason for him being like. If you don't repeat this to yourself, even though you will understand the reason for his actions after reading the story, it's going to slowly tire you seeing how nothing seems to be solved and problems still keep on appearing.

My advice to anyone who enjoys a heavy story that relies on logic instead of fantasy breakthroughs is to read this story as it is a very well written novel. <<less

Really enjoying this so far. Very excited to see what happens to the MC in the future after he made his deal, and whether or not it will become as crippling as it seems on the surface. A true revenge novel with an ironwilled MC, there are questions of conspiracy in the background as he pursues the pinnacle of power.

So far it's been a very good read, and the translation is done very well. Hoping the translation frequency continues at this extremely satisfying pace!

What appeals to me about this novel is the MC's character set up where he has his lifespan reduced and all sentiments not related to revenge were stripped away. This means that the readers all know how this novel will end:- At the end of the 5-year period, the MC will channel Chu Feng as he sweeps his sword across the Divine Continent for seven days and nights, moving 90, 000 miles through the starry skies, unhindered. He will slay saints and buddhas in Heaven, slaughters demons and devils in... more>> Hell, sweeping away all the grievances in his heart, before fading away like a firefly. Therefore what is left in this novel is MC's journey to that end, and from what I have seen so far, the author have not screwed up yet. I don't care really what path the author will take to the ending, it should be OK. What the author must do is to resist the urge to modify the MC's current character setup. No lifespan extension, no restoration of feelings of love, kinship, and friendship; even the ability to procreate. With the perfect MC's character setup, which results in a small world to work with, all the author need to do is to write a moderate-quality storyline to fill them up and it will keep my 5-star rating.

edit March 2018: It seems that many other reviewers has a lot of complaints about MC's character setup. Apparently they forget that that the MC become just like that because of the obtained 'cheat'. I have read somewhere that the MC did not change at all even at the end of the novel. Which is a good thing. This MC is crueler than Chu Feng, which is another good thing. And of course, this MC CAN'T r*pe even if he wanted to. This is worth a ? By iiself. The story kinda sucks though, therefore I put this novel in hiatus until only 100 chapters or so left untranslated. <<less

If you're looking for a story where the only romance is between a man and his sword... wait... something doesn't sound quite right with that statement... ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯

Xingjian has given up all of his “good” emotions for revenge, which makes it sound like he will be very 1 dimensional, but he is definitely more complex than that. It has plenty of well written and translated fight scenes, courtroom dramas and delicious sounding food. I think that the cultivation system is much easier to understand then some other stories and... more>> the plots that he is encountering when he is powering up are interesting and lots of fun.

Anyway, this is one of my favourite translations due to the quality of the translation and the story in general ? it is one of the few that I have to get my fix of everyday! <<less

The best word for this story is engrossing. It has the usual setting of hated by your family for being weak. Getting a lucky opportunity and becoming a talented super genius. But it comes at a price that is rather extreme and is surprising. He gets to live for 5 years and loses a majority of his positive emotions. This doesn't make him evil, he just treats people as pawns. He fights for a chance at revenge that consumed his very being.

The training system is incredibly well built and well... more>> imagined. The abilities are logical and the training isn't about herbs or special abilities. It is about a slow and well built foundation of power using purely talent. He has no cheat items, jade beauty, or master in a box. All he has is a sword and an undying hatred that inundated his very being.

Now onto the other points, the characters are shallow but mostly because the MC doesn't care about getting to know them. The politics are very well developed and have many angles. The MC is one of the best ruthless MCs out there nearly at the level of leylin or wang lin. The mystery is well placed and very interesting. Also the greatest point is that the author is willing to take risks. Even if that means ending his book early, or losing readers.

Spoiler

The book ended and surprisingly the author decided to kill of the MC. Like he said he had 5 years to live and not a single moment more. The mystery was concluded very well and the story is absolutely amazing.

Cool story with a generic plot with a race against time trope added in. The MC gets op real quick after getting his cheat. What's different about this novel is, I guess, the MC himself. In a world governed by power, he, being devoid of emotions, is realistic and in some ways materialistic, with only one set goal in mind and with a limited amount of time to do it. At first I was a bit skeptical after reading the synopsis. I don't really like to read most chinese novels in general because of their fast pacing, going on-in-on about cultivation, no world building, and the shallowness of most of their characters. But, after reading this one, you should really not judge the book by its cover. The story has a nice pacing and sorts of give you an urgency feel because of his life time limit. Interesting. A protagonist who doesn't give a sh*t about immortality and won't be stumbling into a harem.

As a side thing, one thing I find interesting is that you don't know which characters are going to grow to respect the MC, and which are going to go drop him like a hot potato when trouble comes.

Edit: Also, I guess I like how, even though he is incapable of feeling love, he's developed a sense of morality beyond "Geez, the world's a shitty place, with all this strong people oppressing the weak... more>> thing. The beginning of the novel shows the struggles of emotion and how facing them is what makes us human. And throughout the whole beginning I ask myself this question "if one day you are pushed to hopelessness. Will it be human to calmly face it? Or will it be human to make mistakes?"

This novel is nothing short of a suicidal person with only the thought of revenge left in his mind. And there's where I find the beauty in this novel's concept. After the protagonist traded everything, from his... more>> ability to love to shortening his lifespan. You immediately understand there will be no happy ending. There will be no damsel to pull him out of the darkness or living as a God and ruling the world. He is living for his revenge and only revenge. It doesn't matter how long his lifespan is. The moment he completes it, he will have no ability or purpose left to live for. "Is it okay for people to su*cide, when they no longer are able to have a purpose?"

While it will be sad, I really hope the author carries this Haunting but beautiful ideal to the very end. <<less
