Tbh the progression of the main character at the start was amazing at the start. The writer clearly showed us what his goal was and his drive to reach it but as the story continues on the writer focused more on the heroines and the villains and the side characters more. Which I can personally understand because the main character is just there to give a big ‘f*ck YOU’to those in the way of his goal or those who try to hurt his loved ones which grows in number later... more>> on (even if they were gods) and proceeds to either kill them or beat them up. Personally I find that the heroines and side character are more enjoyable to read (especially the ‘hero’ although he is frustrating) and I find it fun when the MC ruins his enemies plan head on and ruins it (lol) <<less

I read this because I saw the manga and I wanted to see where it's going. The first volume was decent but after he went to the surface the writing went downhill pretty fast and never went up. If you enjoyed the "getting stuck in a dungeon part" of this shit, read "Kumo ga nani desu ka".

Hi forgive me for being honest, had updated myself to latest on WN, LN, manga, before I make any comment to be fair. Seriously I was hoping/wishing that the MC can grow up at some point and have more mature mindset, but none still disappointed, I personally think this kind of story will have some bad influences to younger readers, as its telling that its ok for the strong to look down on the weak, and do whatever you want once you are strong. No need to respect or consideration... more>> to anyone or the society. Its kind of childish behaviour, imagine a kid who got hold of lots of high tech weapons and brings them to school, telling everyone they are the biggest shot around and they call the shot too, curb storm anything that irritate them disrespecting everyone. Well sorry its long, the only redeeming char is the grown up Kouki, defending the weak with his life, Aby is also cool. Thank you and have a nice day. <<less

After seeing all the extreme comments for this novel I wanted to check it out to sate my curiosity. I started with manga and not only was it not bad, but it was great ! It had a good start, showed promise and I personally liked the character designes very much. Then after I finished 16 chapters of it, I started reading the WN, and even the first few volumes which were adapted to manga were subpar compared to it. WN strengthened the impression of MC being bullied by his... more>> classmates which increased the readers dissafection towards them and ultimately wishing for revenge on them when MC becomes OP which wasn't fulfilled. Manga on the other hand didn't focus too much on bullying and bad aspects of MC's life before transport so even if MC doesn't take revenge it won't feel so underwhelming. But even with that, I can't say that first 4 volumes of it were bad, as they were still acceptable and relatively promising.

However then comes the bad part when Shia comes into picture... After she appears, I get the feeling that author decided to change and fk up everything. Plot goes on too fast - there isn't any breaks between storylines, MC's IQ drops too much as he casually reveals important secrets to strangers and even people that were hostile to him a moment ago, other characters are very dumb and irrelevant - they exist just to talk 1-2 sentences to the MC, there is too big of a transition of ''naive slice of life'' in 1 chapter and then in the next the cruel brutality of story is shown (author tries to depict people in the worst possible way with their greed, gluttony, lust, etc... but it just doesn't work as he very soon switches to slice of life of a 16-year old highschooler)
From then on it's basically a culmination of shitty wish-fullfilment and tons of stereotypes from shounen genre that makes people who were expecting something original from the prologue sick. Personally it was a total let down, because the beginning and the manga were so awesome, but thankfully I was already prepared for it and didn't have high expectations as most people already said it was gonna be bad.

MC in the first and second volume felt cool and very badass-like but after that he turned into a shitty tsundere which everyone could play with - he didn't have any dominance in relationships as when the girls ordered him to do something he always does it while grumbling and he lets off other people too easily which brings me to my next point - The ruthless protagonist tag is absolutely unecessary, as he is far away from it because he lets people talk sh*t about him and flirt with his girls in front of his eyes without punishing them severely (or some times at all) while before that he was killing everything for a slight griveance. After the first several volumes he's basically like a spineless shounen protag with a short temper.

For the side characters, the only one that helped MC in some way is the main girl. Everyone else feels like a hindrance, they exist only to lenghten the chapters, to enrage or to slow down the MC. But even the main girl becomes annoying later as she forces MC to do things he doesn't want and to be nice to other girls who are very annoying to him while she was being jelaous of how clingy they are to him just a second ago... But beside the main girl, others can also make him change his mindset very quickly which transforms him into the ''gonna save everyone'' type of guy which should be totally out of character for how he acted before that.

Also, about the translation -
Spoiler

before bakape*vert it's extremely bad, as there has to be at least one mistake in every sentence written, so I also won't recommend this novel for grammar nazis or people that get triggered when they see an amateur grammar mistake.

[collapse]

Thought about rating it 2 / 5 stars just because of the start, but I just can't...

Sorry for the rant, but I just had to take it off my chest, as I was very disappointed by how story went even after all the warnings... <<less

Thus, yet another great story falls into the depths of tr*shy harem light novels. Arifureta Skokugyou did well early within the story in developing the MC's psychological state of mind, and the romantic interest was equally enjoyable. Each has a unique backstory that captures the reader's interest; this is maintained as characters encounter stressful situations. There is a satisfying brutality to the novel as old side characters are reintroduced into the plot only to find the MC's persona significantly altered.

However, all of this changes after the Great Orca Dungeon arc.... more>> The author falls into a state of depravity and petty lust as characters lose their defining elements. The MC becomes a polygamist, powerful women flock to his side without rhyme or reason, and each traveling companion can be summarized by a singular stereotypical personality element. The seriousness of the novels lose their sense of gravity and seriousness only to be replaced by poorly executed romance comedy.

In conclusion, if you must, do not read past the MC's escape of the first dungeon. Consider such the end of the novel, and move on in ignorant bliss. The remaining text should be burnt in a dumpster fire. <<less

This web novel is really great, I agree to some of the opinions of others how it suddenly degraded after the first volume (especially the somewhat excessive lovecomedy going on), but then again this is a "web novel", as far as I know, there are no quality control like editors or something of that sort. (Not sure if I'm correct though). The LN version is probably more refined.

On the other hand. You can't really expect the MC to be completely fall to the "dark side". I understand the complaints, but... more>> then again, the MC transitioning from a good guy then to a "kill-everything-and-everyone" type of person and then to a somewhat hypocrital anti-hero tsundere, is not without proper reason. There are factors (people&stuff) which made him like that, in other words he still retained some of his sense of virtue, the only difference was he was more of a very practical kind of character. If some of you had read wuxia novels etc., you do know how practical the MC's are to the point of being frighteningly mature. The MC in this web novel in the other hand, is just an high school student in the first place, it would not make sense if he suddenly became a perfect person. He is still young, you can't expect him to be a wuxia novel MC then expund on the dao, can you?

Give this novel a chance, it's not that bad, the fact that it got this far is testament that it is not that "bad".

I kind of miscl**ked and rated five, but it's fine really, I mean it kinda deserves it for me, since I've read some of the really "disaster-like" stories. To me this is godsend. <<less

I'll keep this short and sweet.

Read "The Rising of the Shield Hero" instead of this novel. Shield Hero and Arifureta both have a protagonist that are innocent yet rejected by society (their peers) in the beginning. Both protagonist were involved in an incident that changes their personality to a more "darker one" and both become stronger. Also, both somehow become extremely overpowered. However, that's where the similarities end.

The protagonist from Shield Hero has a personality while the protagonist from Arifureta doesn't have one. Nagumo just became an edgy teenager and... more>> does whatever he wants (There's really no definite goal for the protagonist) while rejecting everyone around him expect his harem. Naofumi ends up with a defensive personality, yet tries to open up with the cast of characters.

I liked the first volume of the Arifureta's novel, but I couldn't stand the protagonist after that. It's unfortunate. <<less

The first arc or first dungeon was great.

It was really harsh and tragic, and set the mood for the entire series.... except that it doesn't. Almost immediately after the first dungeon, the series has a complete tone shift, and turns into a light hearted- harem-tr*sh- comedy.

Yeah, it really does, with its masochist dragon onee-sans, sadistic MC, useless tag-along girl, loli vampire, and constantly being beaten bunny girl.

... more>> Yeah, it turns terrible extremely fast.

If you were to read it, just read up to the end of the first dungeon, because it goes down hill exponentially fast, after that.

Basically, if you like tr*shy generic harem comedy, then you'll like it. But if you don't like that, then it will suck hard.

Disappointing that the author decided to give in to what's popular to make more money/sales/readers then trying to do something unique. But this is Japan, and you can't attract readers without T and A and s*x fantasy fulfillment. Its understandable, because author needs money to live, but doesn't make the series any less tr*sh. <<less

To be honest. It started of as a really promising novel, which fills you with expectations... on the beginning at least. It turned out that this novel wasn't really, really, really my type and it disappointed me in almost every aspect.

It's practically an MC who got betrayed and swore revenge. Something like Dungeon seeker. I myself love this type of vibe... but then he suddenly gains power and finds a secret within the dungeon and heads out to complete all of them? What happened to the hatred towards his... more>> classmate?

He had an edgy makeover (he gets even more emo and edgy) and finds himself a vampire GF and meets other girls and makes them fall for him with cringiest and forced way possible... so what if he has a harem? That harem almost made me drop this novel... ALMOST! but that not the reason to why I dropped it.

Spoiler

I dropped it cause at one point, he decides to let his classmates also become OP and help them, like WTF? This is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I wanted

[collapse]

And after that, I decided to drop it. 1/5 one of the worst novels I had ever wasted my time on. <<less

Basically you start off with a weak MC that's very kind and does whatever he can to be useful.

Then stuff happens, and Hajime, the main character, changes drastically. The rest of the story is mostly action, adventure, comedy, and harem. However, the part that sets it above other novels, in my opinion, is that it also depicts the protagonist slowly regaining what he's lost.

Spoiler

Namely his emotions and humanity.

It was one of my favorite novels, but then it turned to crap! The MC was bullied, treated like air, and left for dead, and through surviving, he turned into a cold, ruthless MC. That is what I thought, but he was all talk, because he ended up helping some of his classmates that bullied him, or those that did nothing to help him during the bullying. To make matters worse, the novel started focusing only on the harem aspect of the novel.

The first volume for Arufureta is great, I was excessively happy about the turn of events and it had promising plots and character development.... Then everything changed with the introduction of needlessly annoying useless harem members. Now a foil can be good, but these? No characterization whatsoever. I read all the way up to volume eight in hopes it would get better. It did not. I recommend reading the first volume and then calling it quits while your ahead. The 'romance' seemed like it was taken out of a bad... more>> written harem anime filler episode. <<less

I like the story so far, and the MC's attitude. Although he is surrounded by beauties, he always regards one person, yue, as the only special one. Unlike some many MCs in other harem genre which cannot even understand or make decision of whom their special one. This one can make a clear decision and statement of whom he loves.

Arifureta is the most delightful web novel I've ever read. It'll make you smile for hours at a stretch, enjoying the shameless guilty pleasures you wish you had IRL. That's why people read web novels-for a neverending feeling of winning.

Let's start with the complaints, and then I'll give you an honest review of what to expect.
  1. The novel lacks substance: It's a web novel. Anyone looking for substance is delusional.
  2. There's a harem with a loli: well, shouldn't have read a novel with harem and loli tags right below the title.
  3. I agreed with the MC when he was starved, isolated, and crazed, declaring he'd kill everyone and everything like a broken record, but stopped once he talked to people: you should seek help.
  4. The first arc of the novel is good, but the rest s**ked because it's an isekai web novel: The MC is the weakest, beaten down by his classmates, then betrayed. He drops into a dungeon and gets comically OP compared to said classmates. What did people expect would happen? His classmates are there for reaction fulfillment. "Oh my god, he's so strong! He's riding a motorcycle!? No way! I was so wrong about you! Love me, Hajime!" That's the point.

  5. The character is an anti-hero but not an anti-hero: What do you think an anti-hero is? A villain that's not called a villain? You know those are called villains, right? The anti-hero character trope everyone's talking about has cold, callous hyper-rational MCs who are psychopathically unfazed about killing and apathetic to people's suffering and problems BUT get dragged into playing the hero. However, they play by their own rules. It's a reaction fulfillment trope. See above.
If you're here to love life and watch someone win at life, you're in the right place. This first-class dumpster fire will make you question why you're such a degenerate.

In other words, it's perfect.

The MC's the weakest, a non-combat blacksmith who creates modern weapons in a fantasy world. While people are riding horses, he's balling out on a hummer with advanced weaponry, which an otaku has absolutely no business knowing how to build.

Spoiler

He goes into a dungeon, comes out super strong, and then shows off to his classmates. #Classic He collects a harem of overpowered people like all novels with the overpowered and harem novel tags while conquering more dungeons, the entire point of the novel.

[collapse]

What separates this tr*sh novel with all the same cliches as the others is that it's well done and makes you feel good. That's all that matters.

If you want a wish-fulfillment feel-good novel, just read it and enjoy the journey. If you're not looking for that, stay away. It's not that complicated.

Novel defended.

This was my first ever light/web novel I've ever read. And maybe that's why I think I feel it deserves 3.5 stars but looking at it objectively, I'll say it deserves 2.5 stars, 3 stars at best.

Certainly, this novel is a great book for starters before you truly read more refined and outstanding books. Because after getting a taste of those, you'll never be able to read your run-of-the-mill Seinen Fantasy books like this one. If you look at other average Isekai novels, there won't be much difference besides minor... more>> details.

It certainly had a decent start, one that doesn't seem too bad compared to others. The cliche Isekai aspects were tolerable up till the 3rd book.

One of the major criticisms I had was the harem. Now that I think about it the first girl joining was understandable, the second girl joining was barely tolerable, the third girl joining was suffocation, and for some of the rest, it just didn't make any sense. The bar to join the harem kept being lowered and lowered until basically, if a female had a strong interest in the MC, they were able to join. Heck, it was even told that even the single female classmates had interests even though they were not in his harem. Oh and the afterstory that focuses on the MC is either about his adoptive daughter or doing some le*d things.

Spoiler

This is the situations with how the girls become part of the harem

First Girl : She's sealed away in the depths of a labyrinth where she meets the MC who initially rejects helping her but in the end, helps out.

Second Girl : She meets the MC after he leaves the end of the labyrinth after completing it and becomes extremely clingy just so the MC can save her tribe.

Third Girl : After rampaging due to being mind control, the MC sticks a metal stake into her rear end and becomes a masochist.

Fourth Girl : She's the teacher of the MC and after being hurt in battle, the MC does a mouth to mouth to feed a potion. She starts acting like half her age after learning about it.

Fifth Girl : She fell in love back on Earth when she witnessed the MC persistently apologizes to some bullies while getting abused in order to get forgiveness for some stranger. It was stated that she fell in love because he was the only one with enough courage to act on the scene but in reality, it was anything but courageous, it was more of foolishness. Oh and the bullies left the scene because they didn't want to be caught by the police, the MC's actions didn't contribute towards them leaving the scene.

Sixth Girl : After the MC delivers a kidnapped child back to the mother, the mother instantly displays interests and states she's a widow. And from my memory, I don't believe there was a reason stated why she fell in love immediately (including the action of saving her daughter).

Seventh Girl : She falls in love due to the MC saving the Fifth Girl.

Eight Girl : A princess who contributed nothing that falls in love with absolutely no reason stated. Side Note : Loli
[collapse]

Another thing I found intolerable was the contradictions the MC keeps creating. Consistently stating that he has no interest in affairs unrelated to him, he somehow is forced to deal with it. And these situations keep occurring until he starts actively participating without anyone's begging.

The side characters also seem quite lacking. Though there might be some backstory to their actions, the general gist of it isn't any different from the countless Isekai novels out there. There's the naive and justice loving hero, the two faced god, the beta male turned into alpha male (MC), and so forth. Beyond the MC and his harem, nobody gets character development and are flat characters throughout the entire story. Nothing about them stands out which makes the story less interesting. <<less

I only read the main story!!!

I think its an really good novel with harem and op MC. But in the second half of the story there are more ecchi and sometimes that makes me disappointing because in the beginiing of the story Hajime is an totally chad and alpha male with a harem despite of his character (I mean he always said what in his heart, sometimes protective but sometimes bully his harem a little bit.) Unfortunely in the second half there are more harem, ecchi and other scenes... more>> and less chad alpha scenes.

All in all my opinion is really subjective and maybe I love too much this novel (it was my first novel more than a year ago) so I think if you want an ap MC with guns and firearms, rocket lunchers and other modern wapons an the classic middlle aged fantasy world then you foun the best novel

Okay here's why I gave it 5 stars (it should be 4.5 stars really).

  • The main character stays true to his nature.
    Spoiler

He deemed that he would eliminate all his enemies without mercy and even sticks to that policy after returning to Japan.

    [collapse]
  • He's also eccentric in a sense. He gets worked up about certain things and it adds to the story in a comedic, more light-hearted tone.
  • The main character's harem is actually quite entertaining and interactive. They are all each their own individuals who have grown and become adapted to the environment they live in over time whether it be the fantasy world or Japan/the real world. It's interesting to see their interactions, their little quirks, and light-hearted conflicts.
  • We always hate it when the main character lets a villain go because he thinks they'll have a change of heart down the road. I'm not too sure if it's because of the main character being an otaku and his parents also teaching him the ways of the otaku but he definitely learned quite a bit from the normal, naive male protagonists of most isekai genre novels. He certainly acts like the alpha-male type of character we want to see without being too edgy and his coincidentally chuunibyou-based moves, weapons, and fight scenes are all entertaining contradictions I enjoyed reading.
  • The antagonists and temporary antagonists in this story all have substance and depth. They aren't two-dimensional stepping stones for the main character to trample over with ease with a fancy magic spell or an overpowered weapon but rather with diligence and thorough effort. There's actual meanings behind why certain antagonists came to be or why they continue to act that way; there's also revealed information and some major plot twists to the story that allow for it to be enjoyed and a good read. The antagonists balance the almost anti-hero-like protagonist and it allows for the story to be full of action throughout the chapters.
  • Overall, I would say that this is a 9/10 read. It's enjoyable, comedic, interesting, overall unique, and has a meaningful harem (although some people despise harems which I understand as well I suppose). The translators for the actual main story are great as well as the translators for the after-story and side-stories that come after the ending of the main story. I particularly enjoyed the side stories just as much as the main stories since they're an adventure of their own and also has really entertaining plot and action. To put it in simpler words, if you like a revenge-like plot with an alpha-male-like main character, a good harem, quite a bit of romance development, action, and comedy all combined together into one solid story with good plot, this is a must-read.

Decent first volume, downhill from there... unless you enjoy the tags themselves, after all the novel follows the harem, comedy and OP MC ones pretty well...

I continued this with expectations of it getting back some of its glory from the first volume and because I found some of the situations funny/interesting (I liked how the MC didn't care about not showing his OPness unlike other novels), but had to drop it after a certain event that made me think the author wasn't even trying to justify things anymore. He just... more>> wants to tell a story of harem and badassery, no matter how forced that may be without solid basis (which he HAD from volume 1 but got away from for some reason)

Spoiler

I'm referring to when, during a fight, the MC thinks "This is easy to doge since I can doge shots from my own rail gun" referring to... Doing literal light beams... Honestly, I smiled, chuckled and dropped it. The sadness for the time wasted came later

There are a lot of harsh reviews I think are really unfair; however, it's not like I can't see their point.

You see, the first part of the first vol. Has a different momentum compared to the rest of the story: Hajime is in a unreasonable position, struggling to do his best, and was ultimately betrayed; he then falls from grace, and went through hell to climb back, changing permanently.

That said, if nothing else had happened, he'd had abandoned his humanity; but the people he met and ended up caring for... more>> or already cared about, specially Yue, kept him from this, intentionally or unintentionally. It was also no-one's design, a number of (seemly) random events had to align for that to happen.

Spoiler

In the end, a huge part of his story arc is about retaining his humanity, even when he never becomes a hero.

[collapse]

So if you don't like the fact that he didn't become a full-time revenge-hungry edgelord incapable of forgiving nor having human interactions, or that he has a (unwanted) harem (read: family, friends & things allowing him to think straight), some with quirky personalities, this story is not for you. <<less

Like everyone agrees the start was way better than everything else. The main character slowly goes from cool to just annoying in his s*upid adventure of picking up harem members and having long dragged fights. The comedy and fantasy element isnt really that great as well so there isnt much to stick for except the reactions of other characters after he gets strong. A lot of people were happy and pumped to see it but that happiness didnt really last long since it was stretched between multiple shitty arcs nobody... more>> remembers

In the end I think the reason this is just a hated series is because its simply the authors chuuni dream (which he has admitted to) that people dont really think is that cool or fun to read. I wish the
