Its a carbon copy of stellar wars. Personally I would love everything about this and give it 5 stars but it's so similar to the authors previous work it's disappointing. Especially since I feel this author is really talented.

Spoilers (kinda)

Near perfect MC with a flaw turning into tr*sh - check

... more>> Teacher making him a genius - check

Play an online game with a handicap and making him famous - check

Business minded best friend - check

MC falling for and loving a single girl - check

If I hadn't already read stellar wars I'd fall in love with this series but now, I'll just stick to stellar wars since I think the author did just a little better with that story. <<less

Similar to the related series "Tempest of the stellar war" in the sense that the MC has some sort of special training from a powerful entity and becomes extremely skilled. What both series do well IMO is that the characters are interesting and the way the MC is OP yet underestimated often is quite satisfying to read. What BF does better is
1. Not Sci-Fi! This is great because, in the other "sci-fi" novels, people are still super-powered.. And this is not really scientific, personally I don't like the pseudo-science... more>> they use. I prefer plain fantasy. Additionally, the cultivation elements are always interesting for me.
2. The MC is actually weak in terms of "power", his skills are OP, but his actual power is low. This leaves room for progression and I enjoy reading weak to strong. <<less

This novel as various good features, but the best in my opinion is the MC. He is calm, cool, collected and a underdog but still wins his fights. Like the modern setting and love how the MC surprises the people who ridiculed him in the past. I also like how the romance is functioning. He right now has two potential love interests and it is proceeding fast, but I do not believe that it will be a harem.

I wanted to like this, and it's not bad when the MC's story is being told. But I seriously wonder who the main character is supposed to be sometimes. The MC seems to get 50% or less of the screen time.

There are many "episodes" (which span multiple chapters) about side characters, and these sometimes relate to the MC, but most often not. There's nothing wrong spending some time on side characters if they will eventually cross paths with the MC, but the amount of time spent on side characters is... more>> excessive.

In the last 40 or so chapters, the episodes went something like this: MC, side character, MC, side character, side character, MC, etc. It's starting to feel like the side character episodes outnumber the MC's.

As I trudged through the chapters (especially ones unrelated to the MC), I can't help but wonder if the author is just writing text for the sake of filling space to increase the word and chapter count. There is a lot of superfluous content and a good author knows to cut useless content and keep the story focused, but Battle Frenzy seems to be looking to be an example of what writers should NOT do.

If not for that, this would be okay read. But unfortunately that is not the case, and it doesn't look like it gets better from what other reviewers farther ahead have said. When the series moves along and the MC's story is being told, it's interesting enough. But when it drags on, my god does it drag. <<less

Very repetitive and boring. Though it would get better, so I read up to 200 chapters, and there is no end in sight. After hearing from other people that even in the raws it is the same, I decided to quit.

At chapter 61.

The novel is interesting in that it mixes sci-fi with cultivation. One of my favorite parts about this is the school setting. This novel reminds me of mahouka koukou no rettousei because the MC has a lot of hidden strengths. The story has a lot of world building and although it might seem like info dumps at times, I appreciate that the author goes out of his way to explain all the different parts of their world. The beginning of the novel can be a bit confusing and... more>> seemly random, but give it at least a few chapters before deciding. I think this novel is a uprising hidden gem for those that enjoy futuristic/sci-fi novels with action, comedy, and a touch of romance. <<less

Finished the book. Honestly, if you can skim through all of the annoyingly long tournament scenes, it transforms from a 3 star novel into a 5 star novel somewhere around chapter 700.
Spoiler

Right after he wins the tournament, he gets banished into this prison realm because the higher ups fear his talent. The story really picks up once he ascends to the Heroic Soul stage and enters the Holy Land.

[collapse]

You'll instantly recognize what I'm talking about when you reach the 'MC ascends to a new, more powerful world' part of the book, beyond Earth. It's like the author had the best kind of brain damage. It killed his hard-on for dragging on fight scenes and writing filler, and he started weaving together excellent world-building, character development, and intricate analyses of the power system.

This lasts all the way up to the point where he 'ascends to a new, more powerful world' once more, and the story drops down to a 4 star novel. Still commendable world-building, exposition, and development of the power system, and I really enjoyed reading it. But you will feel like you no longer have any sense of understanding in regards to Wang Zhong's power. Honestly, I enjoyed it regardless because I'm a sucker for stories where humanity has to overcome an assault from more powerful civilizations to eventually reign supreme, and that's exactly what happened.

I truly appreciate the vast creativity shown throughout all the fight scenes because they all boast new and exquisitely described techniques, but when every fight boils down to another variation on the side/main character overcoming some limit to triumph, it kind of kills any success the creativity might have generated. Still, I think it's worth it to slog through the tournament and get to the good stuff.

TLDR: I genuinely believe the arcs after the tournament are worth skimming through the 700 ish chapters of constant, drawn-out fight scenes. As in, it matches the sense of awe and pleasure I felt while reading Desolate Era and other elite CN. But 4 stars, not 5, because before those wonderful arcs are long, repetitive chapters.

I liked this novel. It has great fights and funny moments for sure. However, after the first big arc it just keeps repeating the exact same situations and ends up being kind of boring.

I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't expecting a big plot and likes to read good fight sequences.

Where to begin. this novel had some hope. But in the end, it petered out. Got repetitive and it feels like it plagiarized ISSTH at the end. Characters with 30+ chapters of story are dropped. Romance, a big sub-plot, dropped. Every cliche. A 400+ chapter tournament, that ultimately was forgotten and ignored in 7 chapters.

if you have never read a novel like ISSTH, CD or BTTH give this a try, but I suggest the others.

if you have read those and want more, read something else. Or maybe read to the... more>> tournament, read the first and last fight. Save yourself 300+ chapters of repetition. This story of 1200+ chapters could have been told in 400.

Also this has the worst ending of anything I have ever read. As it dosnt end. The final chapter is set up for more... except the series ended. <<less

This is a really interesting novel. I really like how the different realms are portrayed but there is one part that I find unlikeable. This is purely personal preference and I understand that others may like this form of writing but I don't like how many girls are interested in the MC. He claims to love Caroline at first sight but he has so many other girls chasing after him and he doesn't dissuade them at all because he has a "low EQ". But the fight scenes are written amazingly... more>> and the characters are very interesting. They each have their own intricate background that I'm finding more about every chapter. It's a great novel! <<less

A lot of the comments about this book always complain that the author drags out the plot and then tries to suddenly quicken the pace after the tournament. I think what people are missing is that this book gets you attached to the side characters, Barran being my personal favorite; I don’t mind at all when the author uses a couple chapters to detail the fights of these side characters, especially with the format used for tournament fights. The character growth of these side characters is all directly linked to... more>> the main character, but in a way where he doesn’t just solve their problems for them. The main character himself also shows great character growth, but in a subtle way. The first love interest he gets shows that he isn’t immediately the most mature person in the book to the point where adults act like children. His character development is genuine and his combat growth is driven by his increasing maturity.

The tournament arc of this book is very long, and feels drawn out to some, but I didn’t mind it personally considering how hyped up it was being in the book prior to its beginning. The tournament arc can be said to be an example of where the side characters start to become the most appealing they can be. The descriptions of the combat are very interesting imo because it shows off more of the magical/fantasy aspect of the book as the tournament progresses. In fact, I feel as if it’s the perfect compliment to the main character’s adventures in a place so far out of his league with mysterious allies in previous chapters as it shows the arduous journey to strength, or at least what strength appears to be for the time. Another thing I like about this book is that it doesn’t introduce BS skill ceilings that will only be torn down later in the book (cough cough DBZ cough cough God Slayer cough cough). The progress made by each character feels genuinely satisfying, yet insignificant (in a good way).

Regarding common complaints...
Spoiler

When people complain about the first love interest, they’re complaining that the MC doesn’t immediately get over her, which again imo is incredibly unrealistic. A lot of his high expectations for the tournament arc are generated by his desire to see her again, so of course in the face of rejection the MC isn’t gonna give up immediately and act like he doesn’t care. His eventual getting-over her leads into a kind of reluctance to get into a romantic relationship again later in the novel (but don’t worry, he eventually gets over it due to a certain event)

[collapse]

I’m also really satisfied with the conclusion to the tournament arc because it perfectly translates the MC and main side-characters into the next arc in an appropriate and realistic way. I won’t lie, it takes a long time to get to it, but it is incredibly worth it. My one complaint about the book was finally resolved when the MC’s childhood mentor was given his importance back, but only relatively recently. Overall, this book is one of my current favorites and is a breath of fresh air compared to the countless apocalyptic-fantasy novels. The only note I have regarding this book is DO NOT READ THE MANGA. It personally ruins the self-created images you make for each introduced character by replacing them with generic anime designs you can find in any cheap manga publication.

Really love this novel and look forward to future chapters! <<less

I love Modern day Apocalypse setting and also love tournament arc. I don't even mind if the author wrote the tournament arc for 200++ chapter.

But I feel like the writing is kinda redundant. To many times where I just skimp all the chapter in few second and sometimes I just skipped the whole chapter. All I really cared about in this novel is MC fight, I don't need your long repetitive information.

I think I'm a bit generous with the rating, should just give lower 2.0. I can give 4-Star for... more>> the whole tournament arc even if the writing is redundant, but after that it gives the feeling of Cultivation novel instead of the Modern Apocalypse novel.

I still have fun reading till 900 chapter but the next arc just kinda killed it for me and I just stop reading. <<less

Filler filled and completely directionless.

This author clearly has no real outline to his plot points, character arcs, nor for perhaps the most important part of a modern wuxia, his power system.

Countless times you’ll notice direct contradictions between some mechanic or system that he painstakingly uses an entire chapter (or more) to explain in one part of the story, only for him to completely forget about and directly contradict or change in another.

This is also a significant problem with a lot of his side and throwaway characters. You’ll get entire mini-story... more>> arcs devoted to explaining or powering up characters that ultimately do absolutely nothing with it—be it the short or long term. They get built up as if there was going to be some payoff in later chapters, but then the author gets distracted and the MC ends up having so many plot armor power ups that by the time that would normally be relevant, the power scale has already completely shifted and that character is completely forgotten despite having invested so many chapters in them.

An example is the countless chapters that were spent explaining how awesome and strategically brilliant the main character is because he comes up with some number based squad command system that was going to revolutionize 5v5 school tournaments, as well as the countless more chapters about how individuals on that same team are undergoing specialized training, to the point where their lives are even in danger. Except, when the tournament actually starts, that command system is used NOT EVEN ONE SINGLE TIME, and by the end of the tournament the main character is literally 1 vs 5’ing with every other chapter, including the ones with entire mini arcs devoted to them, being relegated to being cheer leaders and cannon fodder.

In the 200+ chapter filler filled tournament arc You’ll also frequently get 3-7+ chapters in a row centered around describing throwaway characters, and then a further 3-10+ about their round of battles, only for them to ultimately get eliminated before they ever get to fight the main character...

I frequently found myself skipping 5-10 chapters at a time because I’d already learned how rambling this author could be. At points, it’s worse than watching an old school DBZ power up scene, because at least in DBZ you were paying attention to the main character for the most part, not spending entire episodes narrating the “intense” match between generic fighter A and fighter B, who ultimately get just eliminated in the next round, long before Goku gets to one shot them, let alone spend episodes charging up to launch a spirit bomb at. In DBZ character terms, this author treats every single side character like they’re Freeza, except the vast majority basically turn out to be Yajirobe/Ox King. <<less

This novel could've been better if the author didn't focus too much on fights between essentially fellow students, 200 chapters in and the f*cking plot still stuck on "Tournament" arc, This novel has a huge world, with monster lurking around, and then that spiritual plane or whatever, and how about the other civilization that was mentioned like 1-2 chapters?, this novel have such a huge world for a plot so small -> Have a lucky encounter -> get strong -> win tournaments???, damn where is the adventure??, the MC is... more>> stuck in such a small world either in his school, virtual space for fighting matches and real match ring. Oh there is some adventure when he fought against monster, but its only like 5-8 chapters what a waste. And don't get me started with the dragging down on something not important, like top 10 Assassins, soldier and all other bullshit, do we care about these clowns who will only be mentioned in these "Tournament" arc? Of course no.

chapters dragging down telling other things not related to the MC or other things that won't impact MC life whatsoever, why would the author write about someone's power or awesomeness when the reader couldn't give a rat's ass about him/her (like "oh this young master/miss is so powerful, he/she came from xxxx family, and ranked 2nd/1st on this xxxx list) why would the reader care how strong they are, how influential they are when the MC only knows them from his common knowledge maybe we would care more if the MC have some connection to their bigwigs or this particular person/families have secret ties to the MC but these things are not related to the MC its only told to us so when the MC stomp these powerful young master/miss the audience will go "WOW SO GOOD" why bother wasting time telling the reader about some unrelated things to the MC or to the plot when its only purpose its just to become a "hey did you know?" or just stepping stone so MC can step on them to glory (write about how awesome a rock is before someone step on it and crush it, yeah thats good storytelling there) I won't mind these types of storytelling but if you keep telling me how awesome or special every rock I'm gonna step on the way then you're just obnoxious.

the MC can get stronger by fighting strong opponents and gain some energy, which he used to spin a fortune wheel? And upgrade himself???, if by fighting stronger opponents gave the MC the energy he needed why would he only seeking opponents from his peers?, outside the safezone there's lots of strong opponent he could fight but he didn't do it because either he's too scared to leave his home or the author just didn't want to bother expanding about the MC homeland. I even didn't know the mc's background, like what kind of family he has. How about the city where the mc's academy located?, what is there in the city?, is there anything else other than the academy and those aristocratic families?.

there's no sense of power progression for the MC as well, like we the reader knows he got stronger but by how much?, what can he do now that he can't do earlier?, there is but these are few and far between.

And how about the mc's teammates?, their relationship is pretty shallow, not much maybe only that 1 love interest but that romance feels kinda forced or cliched, how about mc's personality? Determined, diligent and kindhearted your typical good/nice guy protagonist. This novel is pretty forgettable you know the only thing I remember about this novel after 500 chapters? Only when the MC have to fight against monster at ch 141-150 when one of his teammate got f*cked up pretty bad, another part is where MC discover he can enter spiritual space and met other person from other civilization and their short adventure later.

This is mostly what happens, MC has a lucky encounter > get strong > test strength against other student > grow strong again > filler >fight student again >filler> get strong again >filler> enter small tournament to qualify bigger tournament >filler> win small tournament >filler about other things> fight in big tournament >filler> win in big tournament > filler> enter bigger tournament>filler

so much potential lost for this novel with such a big world but the author insist to stay in such a small pond. Might as well never mentioned the monsters, the spiritual space, the other civilization, and just mention about other student from another school we never cared about or some aristocratic families we don't give a sh*t about.

this novel could've been better if the MC secretly travels outside the safezone to increase his strength, finding relics, fight against dangerous monster and barely escapes, finding about the hidden history of his homeland, helping exiled humans, finding hidden civilization, basically adventure and story outside the school/academy fighting arc. Like dude, humanity in this story is hella weak compared to the monsters, the MC motivation is to become the strongest yeah alright but become the strongest for what? He barely have any experience fighting monsters, i'll tell you this their humanity strongest is still hella weak compared to the monster residing in the spiritual plane. The school/academy exist to nurture young talent to one day become humanity's hope of survival against outside threat, but did these schools/academies prepare them to fight against anything other than human?, did they have any activity that can give the students experience in facing the threat facing humanity? What would you do if you met this monster?, what would you do if you meet this supernatural phenomenon?, what would you do if you stranded far outside the safezone?. In the end the school/academy only exist so the institution or the city they're in gain prestige, no more than that.

i bet this entire plot about "Tournament" will be over at chapter 650-700 and when the "Tournament" is over and the MC have to go adventuring he's gonna get his ass kicked by monsters and need help from some other dude from different civilization. For someone like the MC who only have good battle experience against a person to get his ass kicked by monsters seems logical enough.

if you like a never ending tournament arc, filler, and school/academy settings then read this stuff.

if you want some fighting other things than other humans, adventure across the novel's world, balanced filler, and no dragging down chapters I suggest you read something else other than this hot garbage.

THE AUTHOR SHOULD'VE NAMED THIS sh*t "TOURNAMENT FRENZY" OR "FILLER FRENZY"
WHAT A WASTE OF POTENTIAL THIS NOVEL IS. <<less

This story had so much potential and if you remove all the nonsense, then it is still a good story. But, the author writes so much bull that it's freaking annoying to read. Most of the novel is about fights, which is fine, but 90% of any fight is about the audience/commentators opinions. And, the audience/commentators are portrayed as borderline ret*rded - absolutely everyone. It's not fun to read, and it grates my nerves. A single fight ends up being 3-4 chapters when the content could instead be written in... more>> maybe 3-4 paragraphs.

I only keep reading in the hopes of it getting better but the author seems as annoying as the audience he portrays.

Edit: Just stopped reading this nonsense. It's a waste of time to read the drivel this author writes. <<less

So far the novel is alright.

I get randomly excited at times for some scenes but other than that its sorta boring with lots of explanations of the runes and lots of rich and noble face slapping and rudeness. I enjoy some of the characters and the main character is not so bad but not that interesting either. The fights in the online simulator drags out a lot due to the reactions of side characters (usually powerful young masters/ladies from noble families), hosts, and his fan club.

Just your typical academy novel... more>> involving tournaments and face slapping of the rich. The female lead appears then disappears like she isn't important, but what is new? LOL The female lead is some fancy rich lady from an noble family and she somehow is infatuated with Wang Zhong and Wang Zhong is like proclaiming she's like his everything but barely mentions her. Lots of girls around him but apparently it isn't a harem? So they just there haha.

tl;dr: Lots of stuff u can skip imo and takes forever to finish one fight in the simulator thing.

I would give it a 3.5/5. Would continue reading because its still alright as of current chapter. <<less

The story has a very likable MC and the world is incredible. I really enjoy reading each chapter.

As many have already said, the pace is slow and there is a frequent appearance of filler paragraphs or even chapters. Honestly, I don't really mind the fillers. Even when the author repeats some stuff, one can easily quick read (skip) the paragraph and just concentrate on the actual story.

Definitely one of the best worlds I've ever seen. Monsters, powers, semi-sci-fi. It has everything, but the world is as such they don't actually... more>> negate each other, which is my opinion is an incredible thing. <<less

I find Battle Frenzy to be highly entertaining. Very solid world-building, a MC who has balls but isn't particularly overly c*cky, and a light romance that is believable in it's shallowness. Also, there are plenty of threads showing how the story will continue, while avoiding common issues in xianxia novels of forgetting past details as the MC powers up.

The battles are well-written and well-paced and the more ridiculous genre conventions are routinely avoided. Power-ups aren't random, lucky events occur but don't dominate the story, and MC has a s*x drive... more>> without pursuing every girl that crosses his path, and the MC doesn't hold on to his secret identity to the point of utter ridiculousness.

People are a little ridiculous in the xianxia way, but it's not particularly extreme, and it's more sane when the fighting is training or virtual reality and they're all basically teenagers rather than supposedly virtually immortal experts being ret*rded over and over again - the adults in the story are fairly level-headed and practical as you would expect them to be compared to the teenage main characters. Which is another strength of the series; characters aren't all the same. Most of the main characters are fairly layered instead of being one-note caricatures. Side characters and antagonists and allies are presented with consistent motivations that drives them, even if they're fairly simple like "support my friends who are like my family" or "near-mad scientist researcher" or "high-class girl looking to take her assigned place in society." <<less

I just started this, but I'm really loving it. There are glaring similarities to Tempest of the Battlefield plot-wise, but the characters couldn't be more different! Wang Tong drove me insane; 60 chapters in and I still like Wang Zhong. I'm surprised myself at how fine I am with Wang Zhong and Carolyn, considering how abrupt it was. Hopefully this doesn't become a harem. Thanks to whoever's translating

It's probably more of a 4, but a good, new CN is rare enough that I'll give it 5
