One of the best reincarnation WNs out there for many reasons. It isn't perfect but it has numerous great qualities such as it's non-standard plot exploration and willingness to change.

Pros:

  1. Plot Variety- The story essentially has two main parts with both having their own charm and appeal. The first half is centered around the MC growing up as a spider and focuses on her own inner-monologue and description of what she experiences. The story also has breaks which explores and hints at the wider world and its characters, the parts are also extremely important in both establishing the non-linearity of the storytelling but also breaking up the level grind of our spider. The second half differs in that it is no longer a level grind and journal but rather a world adventure and interaction between our s*upidly strong MC and the world.
  2. Characterization- Kumo is hilarious, and all the characters have their own ecentricities that are both hilarious and at times extremely annoying.
  3. World Exploration- The world and how it operates is extremely well done and is a highlight of the novel. The story initially seems to be no different from any other reincarnate in another world story but as times goes on it increasingly becomes more then simply a fantasy but rather a sci-fi fantasy as the world and it's systems (laws) have a very clear cause and effect that is described in a very tech orientated manner.
Cons:

  1. The first half is certainly not to everyones tastes as it has very little character interactions and is driven primarily by the focus on leveling and the innermonologue of our MC. Also the story is non-linear is information is only discovered / unveiled in parcels meaning that those that want a more simple and more straightforward explanation may find it annoying.
  2. The Transistion into the second half felt rushed and the lead up to one of her major goals was poorly done and quickly lead into the aforementioned second half.

Could there be a more perfect novel out there? Perhaps, but Kumo definitely belongs at the very top ranks. The story is very complex and initially gives different point of views from different time lines but they all reach a cohesive whole where all story arcs converge. Very well done and there is a healthy dose of humor and cute moments from the main character. Definitely the best novel out there with a female main protagonist.

Three translators have taken a shot at this novel. You can start with Turbo... more>> and then switch over to Raising the dead (current translator). Turbo was fast paced and the translation quality was doable but not the best. However everyone owes Turbo big time for introducing us to this gem of a novel so don’t anyone dare show any disrespect for the stellar effort on Turbos end. Dead is currently doing a great job. Gonna give a shout out to the third translator Blastron. He’s further back than Dead but I still feel like his versions are the superior quality. There’s no way catching up with Dead though so I just peruse his new chapters when I’ve got free time to kill.

This novel is highly recommended for anyone looking for a good reincarnation novel with good plot and humor <<less

Spoiler

This novel is actually pretty cool, though at first its a tad bit boring as time passes and our beloved kumoko fights stronger enemies, win, level up, earn skills, earn titles, and evolve, it gradually starts getting more exciting every chapter, though sometimes the author needed to make Q/A chapter just to answer some questions, all is good. At first (especially at the great war side story) the timeline got super messy as the side story from the the future actually got released Before the actual thing happening you would absolutely get confused. But every once in a while the author will throw a mystery thing there then gradually reveal it after some chapters, it was quite amusing, though for some it might be annoying though.

I have to say that I really 'hate' this novel and wonder why the first isekai- type novel I have read was this. :≪It makes me hard to find any new novels of this type that is interesting to me.

Anyway, I have to say that Kumo is a very nice novel to read, but it's just for patient people. I think anyone want to fully judge this novel should read at least >300 chap or more (that is f****** st**** and waste of time- my opinion) because some mystery unexplained... more>> main past from the first 200 chap will be mostly explain when you read that far. So if you have read that far and you hate it, I don't have any arguments, but if you just read <200 chap and hate it because something is boring, unreasonable, I think that what the author want you to feel (hate this novel because of this but love it because I have passed that point :) Kumo is so cute!!!

About what are good and bad, I think there are already some reviews say everything I want to say like characters development, storyline, writing and translators etc, it is better than a lot of novels in the sea of garbage in the internet. But if you are new with this novel and read some reviews, I recommend you read the reviews of people who have read> 250 chap first or some long reviews.

ps You should find the manga first than read from chap 80 or higher because first 100 chap is quite long grinding act (I haven't the manga recently so I don't really remember about it :)

and this is my first review so sorry about my English :) <<less

A great story that made me experience various feelings. The beginning part bored me except from ss, because the main story is only about a spider vs monster. But as the story progress many unexpected things happened. If you are hesitating to read this because of the plot, please try it. This is very fun to read. 5/5 will recommend it to everyone.

Status: V15 LN
Well then, here I go, the first two paragraphs are just an introduction. I now edit this review after pretty much finishing the LN with exception of V16 that hasn't been released yet. Not much that one more volume can bring to the table especially since 15 is just a build up to 16, we already know pretty much how things will go.

I reviewed this at 2017 for the WN version, where I had to drop it after reading a fair bit of chapters due to the bad writing... more>> and focus on side characters that didn't matter in my opinion. Part of it was so-so translations as well, though after reading the LN I know for sure that's just one of the issues. Know that the LN and WN are quite different after a few volumes, although the general direction and flow shouldn't be that different, merely wording and some different events and removing some fluff, edited but not completely changed. Though I do know there are some notable differences and the ending is supposedly different.

Okay, now on to the actual review and why I can't give this more than 2/5 stars despite all the often misguiding reviews you find on this site. Let's start with the pros, because this is going to be very heavy on the cons, no surprise given the rating.

The spider protagonist is quite amusing, I find myself fond of her as a character, specially the first several volumes before she leaves the labyrinth. The side stories aren't too bothersome... At the start of the LN, sadly this also change after leaving the labyrinth. The storytelling is unique with stories from different points in time and different characters, there are a classrooms worth of reincarnations and some focus is on them and other characters. The author isn't afraid to kill various people and having the protagonist be somewhat evil, though there are plenty of inconsistencies. Well, that's pretty much it.

Now on to the cons. Hang in there, this is going to be something of a rant. While the writing style was interesting at first and the side characters had some entertainment value given how ignorant they are compared to our dear spider, it quickly changes after leaving the labyrinth, instead showing different stories of completely irrelevant tr*sh characters and inner monologues, struggles and background stories. I swear, 90% of this is inner monologues and struggles, the action is very little and so is the actual communication and story progress. Time skips happen all the time and we can't follow any of the characters at all. A matter of failing at the idea of "show, don't tell". We can't even follow and appreciate the protagonist as she becomes something of a background character with minor snippets of story here and there, a guest in her own story. As an added pain in the arse, you can skip almost all side stories and still hardly miss out on anything, or just quickly skim most of the parts you don't feel like you enjoy, because they're truly not important, the author just wants to cover so many different characters perspectives and motivations that it feels like the embodiment of "jack of all trades, master of none" the storytelling version, so much focus goes to various stories that not a single one is told well or enough to be interesting, even including our nai wa spider girl. Hell, some volumes she doesn't really even appear, like one that was dedicated entirely to some useless prince who we already knew the fate of and not a single thing in that volume felt relevant or added anything noteworthy.

Spoiler

The story is essentially spoiled early on, though it appeared as if it wasn't supposed to be anything more than a mid-story war/battle. But nah, after 13 volumes, time finally syncs up and we're there, a mere 3 volumes until the story is finished, the battle happens in one volume and v15 is build up to volume 16, not a particularly interesting climax if you could even refer to it as that. The elf battle we get to know about very early on takes that long to finish, seriously. Especially the several volumes approaching it which was basically just to sync time between everyone ends up feeling useless and boring, then the story finally starts moving at volume 14 but nothing interesting happens for the rest of the volumes either and then it's done... I guess it was pretty interesting to see the reincarnations interacting but that's also cut short.

[collapse]

To top all of this off, the recurring changes in perspective just breaks any and all flow. This reads more like a collection of diaries from various people about their inner struggles and their important events. Whenever we change from one character to another, we break all flow. First we're reading about this fun thing the protagonist is doing and then, boom, we're suddenly reading about background character A's useless struggles, then switch to B and C and D before we're back to the main character. Well, honestly, at that point the protagonist is not really worthy of being referred to as such as even she becomes a mystery background figure later, we can't even keep up to track with her and her story is often told as an inner monologue reflecting on the past or so on as well.

Spoiler

I have rarely seen more uninteresting main antagonists and main characters. Ariel is kinda boring, so is her backstory. Dustin is boring as well, way too one-dimensional. When it comes to perhaps the main villain of the story, if we exclude something like D the ultimate god or whatever, he is so utterly, tiresomely uninteresting and boring. His motivations, his actions and his childish personality is nothing but a pain to read about, I don't even find him hateful, I just find him as lacking the worth to read about and as a very bad choice for an antagonist, this author has failed utterly in several of the most important characters. Although I do have to admit the last part of volume 14 when potimas gets owned and killed is very satisfying albeit anticlimactic, that'spretty much the end of the novel except for the v15 and 16 that is a build up followed by a little quest for the destiny of the world by D the evil god

[collapse]

This next spoiler bubble is a very concise summary of the entire story, well, the events, to show how short this story actually is and how few things happened before it was over. Read at your own risk, though it doesn't really spoil much since the novel does that job well itself with the disjointed timelines.

Spoiler

In this entire novel, hardly anything happens. It can be summed up as a 1/3 being in the labyrinth where things actually feel like they somewhat progress and was interesting, then they get out, fight a tiny bit and meet ariel the demon lord, stop at the town with reincarnation vampy sophia and save her from the "ewhil" clutches of, then they go on a journey that we can't really follow and stop in a few towns, mainly time skips, kill off an UFO they somehow found on the way filled with tech from the childish antagonist that he provided the schematics of but didn't build, the MC becomes a god suddenly by swallowing a bomb and loses her powers for a while, they travel forth, find a s*upid oni and get a bit roughed up, then they're at the demon territory where we don't get to see much more than some very short meetings and them living in a mansion for a while and apparently getting a bit stronger, the MC gets drunk and suddenly can use magic again though she has to train to get stronger, which we don't really see, then they do a little battle between the demon and human army in one volume where the MC isn't truly involved, suddenly they're at the elves forest and finishes him off and then they deal with the reincarnations for an entire volume and prepare for the last battle that won't be that interesting either and one volume is too short to wrap everything up properly. There you go, entire novel summarized, that's ALL THAT HAPPENS and we barely even get to see the story happen, 80-90% of the story focuses on inner monologues after all, stuff that actually happens isn't much at all. Of course we get some side stories explaining the same thing from different perspectives of characters that we don't care about and that are killed off or never important in any way and some background stories. It just makes things "better" (sarcasm) that we just find out various things and abilities of the protagonist far after she gained them, we never gets to see any of the process after she leaves the labyrinth and becomes a god, it just happens and is told to us during the battles that she has this or that power or resource

[collapse]

Read the manga instead, it focuses almost solely on the protagonist's story and reads way better and wastes less of your time. The anime is just a copy-paste of the LN with some very minor differences due to time constraints and them removing or changing some parts they don't want to animate, but the first season covers the pretty decent parts, the manga and anime made me want to see more but I was sorely disappointed in the rest of the story. Wasting time on this novel is, as the protagonist would say, nai waaaa, totally nai waaa. I bet most people giving this high ratings haven't read all of it or have special tastes or perhaps just haven't read that much yet. I personally can't enjoy a story where the protagonist becomes a side character and most of it is just inner monologues of both the main character and other irrelevant characters that bring nothing to the table except for word padding.

Kinda long review, but that's my take on it. I might or might not read the last volume once it's released in a few months, part of me don't think it's worth it since it's not interesting yet another part says it's just 1 volume that'll take a few hours to read at most, so why not finish the story and leave it behind forever.

Very good story. This is like rough gem, a specially at beginning, with almost annoing cicle, where our heroine is doing nothing but fighting monsters and chomping them. I belive, if this story will someday go through good editing and maybe a bit rewriting of some of the first chapters and published after this - the story would become an amazing work. Its still very good though and deserve to give it a try.

To me, it feels like all these s*upidly good stories that escalate quickly.

The beginning is a bit slow, farming and farming so to say, but I really like the MC's way of thinking. I mean, I REALLY like this little spider.

By the way I'm a big fan of slice of life, and no good with cliffhanger and those things, but I think this one is really worth reading, even if I sometime need to wait patiently.

Kumo Desu ka Nani ga? Is, without doubt the cutest story about a spider ever created in human history. The story follows Kumoko, who reincarnated into spider like monster in RPG game like world. That means there will be a lot of status update (level, skill, resistance, drop item), but it didn’t really disturb my reading experience. There are several points to be noted in this series:

– there are a lot of side stories. They might be boring at first, but yes, they are important to the story. The change... more>> in perspective actually really useful in explaining how the world and system works, and also serve as a foreshadowing. We really need those, considering Kumoko is stuck in the labyrinth for a long time. The side story become more interesting as more perspective is introduced, and it really build the connection between Komoko and the rest of class member.

– It actually have a plot. Unlike other reincarnated series which only consist of the MC getting stronger, gathering harem, and revenge without solid plot, Kumoko has general direction that the story is heading toward. This means that our Kumoko won’t stay as the cute little spider forever.

I had fun reading this up until the side stories became a thing.

It is nice to read how a spider survives and grow into a very powerful being. The hardships that accompanied her idiotic actions and overall it is funny.

The thing that did destroy the immersion I had was that the side stories got more and more focus as the chapters rolled. It gets very confusing and distracting to follow at times because it is also set in another timeline. Each side stories are just POV on side characters which... more>> is really unnecessary. We could have just followed the spider and get the same info instead of dragging it on these side stories which really just poorly executed.

Spoiler

You can see I hated how the author wrote the skill, it was never thought out pretty well like most of the WN out there.

The skills also don't follow any rules and the author just makes them like there is no tomorrow, I mean you could say Physical Resistance can have Blunt, Slash, and Pierce at level 1-3 respectively. And at level 10 you get total Physical Immunity instead there is another skill for it. As said the rules are nonexistent which made me cringe every time we get status reports that takes up half the chapter. The skill can upgrade to even better version but why? Its pointless if you have levels 1-10.

I would say this as part of the world building. And it is Weak.

[collapse]

In the end she becomes a tiring to watch especially in the later chapters because.

Spoiler

I will guess the author also got tired of writing in a perspective of the spider and just pull out a Deus Ex Machina plot twist to make her into something else.

She becomes a god and can transform into a humanoid form gets drunk (a lot and craves alcohol) and you will get subjected to her disgusting drunkard state which I question the relevance to the whole story.

After this the whole point of the story is basically ruined. It would have been best that it ended when she was still a spider to begin with. Totally disappointing.

[collapse]

In the end I didn't like it. I would recommend it to others though just don't expect that it will get better, but I guess that will be a matter of perspective. This after all became a guilty pleasure at this point. <<less

Lets see...

– Amusing uncommon MC.

– Great worldbuilding (really, its the first time I've read the story with the “game” world that totally makes sense).

... more>> – 2-3 parralel stories|timelines seamlessly converge into one, making it a good novel for re-reading. They are easy to follow but the way the intervine between themselves makes it more intersting to read.

– A few of the WHAT A TWEEST moments.

– Wide variety of characters with some (mental!) growth and proper personalities, they never say something out-of-character – quite rare for WNs.

– And well-written battle scenes with little to no luck involved.

Yep, its a well-deserved 5* for game-elements world WN,

a good read.

@charioles it began as a doungeon crawling backlog, then main plotline was carefully introduced in special\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\side chapters, by 150~ish chapters everything starts to get together beautifully.

@bom12826 it started focusing on side characters only when MC had nowhere to grow anymore. Side character stories are somewhat simillar to Overlord novell but, unlike OL, they are always closely tied to main story and MC’s previous actions have huge influence on them. <<less

Ok so this novel is what bought me to the wonderful world of web novels and I absolutely loved it. Re-read both the web novel and the light novel multiple times but the ending of the web novel was a little... rushed I would say. It wasn't perfect, it has its flaws, but overall it maintained excellent quality throughout its journey.

Spoiler

Except the ending.

How much did it cost the autor after more than 300 chapters to make 2 or 3 or 4 chapters for the epilogue?.

It could have had the ending that it has, but with more things, all the drama of the last battle, the life of a bunch of secondary, summed up in "and now they'll manage as best they can."

What happened to the teacher and the reincarnated extras, what happened to the hero, what happened to sophia.

Everything stayed in "and now they'll manage as best they can."

The first seven volumes were pretty good. Action-packed and exciting, it was pretty hard to put down the novel even for a moment. The MC was also likeable, so no issues there. Everything was pretty good. Up until volume 8, that is.

Volume 8 brought about a very big change to the novel's pace, drastically slowing it down. There was still a lot of action scenes, don't get me wrong, but the progress of the story slowed down tremendously compared to the first seven novels. I think it's fine to slow... more>> down the pace a bit, but then from volume 11 up until the most recent one, volume 13, there was almost no progress to the story.

Volume 9 and 10 were still pretty good, although they don't compare to the first seven novels, but volume 11 onwards was a slog to read. Volume 11 was absolutely unnecessary, and I daresay one can even skip it altogether and you won't even miss any significant plot point. I guess you could say there were a few significant plot points, but that leads us to another problem I saw in the later novels.

The author loves repeating themselves. Events or objects that already happened or that were already mentioned is explained again and again every time it's brought up. That's why I think volume 11 is pretty unnecessary, because any significant plot point mentioned in that volume is explained repeatedly in the later novels anyway.

Another reason why I think volume 11 is unnecessary:

Spoiler

I don't see a single reason why a character that already died in volume 2 deserves a volume dedicated only for him, even for character development. I mean, an entire volume just for a character that already died 9 volumes ago???

[collapse]

As for volume 12 and 13, it's so full of fillers and repeated explanations I swear the story could be narrated in half the page count. Sometimes, there's so much explanation that goes on a tangent that it detracts from the story. There would be action scenes, but I couldn't immerse myself in it because every time a character makes a move, there would be an accompanying explanation for that move that would explain: a) how it was done, b) why it was done, c) how it applies to situations that is entirely unrelated to the current situation, and a bunch of other stuff. I understand explaining action scenes, but it would have been better if it did not destroy the reader's immersion.

I really liked the first half of the novel, but the successing volumes just wore down my excitement for this novel bit by bit until I was only slogging through the novel. I hope volumes 14 until 16 would be better because I really don't want to drop one of the first webnovels I've read and liked. <<less

Not rating as I am waiting for this series to be completed. I read the light novel and parts of the webnovel.

The story only picks up after cave and I like the twist that is revealed regarding a certain character. Even though the MC is OP, there is an acceptable explanation for why she ends up where she starts at and why she gains power so quickly. The author never breaks their in-universe rules. However, the light novel is really quite long winded at times, and the beginning is really... more>> a chore to get through. In a way, the light novel expound far too much from the webnovel. Although this isn't the best I have read of this genre, it is still enjoyable. <<less

This story has an interesting premise, reincarnated as a spider she gains dragon-rending powers while she struggles to survive a fantasy world. I wanted to like it, but I couldn't...

    • The drama and plot is underwhelming. The first 100 chapters is all about MC's silly thoughts and random abilities, as she fights-or-flights monsters to escape a dangerous cave. I thought the start was best, a survival story with character growth, but there is barely any plot here, the world and characters are unaffected by her. The real plotline is that the world is dying and war is endless, the elves and her class are caught up in it, but it's horribly written. After escaping the MC is only motivated for food, she doesn't care, it's boring.
    • The perspective gets lazy. At first the MC is weak and scared, she struggles which makes the story interesting, you experience her problems in a relatable way. Later the focus becomes about how powerful and quirky the characters are, like a cheap action series, I couldn't get into it.
    • The themes are strange and unimmersive. The MC is a human in a spider, but she becomes much more, splitting her personality many times, getting involved with gods that transcend the worlds petty problems, it got so silly that it didn't make sense and just wrecked my immersion.
Conclusion: Kumo is a unique take on a big action story about an overpowered MC. It's silly and fun, enjoyable for imaginative folks who want an easy read. It's not for people who want a mature novel with fleshed out plot and solid themes.

I would give this story a 3.5 if I could but Ill round it up to a 4. The story starts out strong, the MC is interesting, the fights and strategy are fun to read, and pacing and story building are good. Overall first part of the story is great a 4.5-5/5 in my opinion. The side stories peppered around the main story are alright, not great not terrible, I would give them 3-4/5 on average. However after the first main part of the story things started going downhill.

Spoiler

After leaving the labyrinth the action and fight scenes slow down a bit and even more so after she becomes a god. Some people disiked this part of the story however I still found it fun to read though less so then the labyrinth arc, a solid 4/5 from me.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The part I really think the story started to get worse was around the time of the elf village arc, the arc itself was alright still fun and interesting to read, about as good as the previous segment. My main issue was that around this time the frequency of side story chapters significantly increased and the story started to focus more on the side charachters while the MC just hung around in the background. The side stories arent bad but are far less interesting then the main story, I would give them a 3.5/5 in general for the wrath and Sofia side stories.

My main gripe with the side stories is with the Shun side stories, I find them to the the most annoying and least interesting part of the entire story. Shun is one of the reincarnators like the MC and can be fully described with 3 adjectives. He's a fanboy, hes indecisive, and hes pravtically useless. Half of the time hes just talkinng about his older brother who was a badass hero who ended up dieing. The other half of the time hes just doubting himself and everything he does. His only reason for existing is to eventually be a major part of the story due not to his own abilities but due to plot convenience. Hes surrounded by other interesting reincarnators such as his friend who got genderbent, or the guy who saw the world as a game and went power crazy, or his sister who was not a reincarnator but just a natural born genius who could have been a great character is the author dident drag her down the yandere brocon path, or just any of the other reincarnators doing cool shit. However instead of following any of those interesting characters the author forces chapter after chapter of this lame and boring character. If I wanted to read about a loser being dragged around by the events around him and doing nothing I would just write a journal and read that. While I would give the side stories of the other non Wrath and Sofia characters a 3/5, I wouldent give the Shun side stories above a 2.5/5 in the early parts or a 1.5/5 in the later parts. In the current arc after chapter 330 in the next 30 chapters the MC barely even shows up once with every chapter being a ss and nearly half of those being Shun POVs

Overall a good story that I would recommend reading, however it is dragged down particlarly in the 6th and 7th volumes by the author focusing on the least interesting character in the story. Still, a good story that I would recommend reading. <<less
