“With your own strength, prove the worth of your species.”

Without warning, every man, woman, and child was teleported off to fight an endless series of battles. Failure to clear every objective means that humanity shall be purged, or so the Operator claims.

But if that is true, why was K sent back in time?

Excellent novel, binge read it up to the current 75 chapters. Was initially put off by the negative reviews on shallow mindless plot but I'm glad I still went ahead to read it. Enough for me to provide some token support on Patreon. Imo, better than other similar reincarnator novels like Reincarnator and KOTB due to slightly more balance between OPness and shallow plot progression involving mowing through everything. No author reminding you in every chapter how amazing MC's skills are, no gaping audience providing reactions on how amazing he... more>> is all day and, laugh if you will, reasonable power creep. After reading many many of these titles, there are subtle differences between genuinely interesting OP skills/items that are utilised well in battles AND OP skills that end the battle by allowing you to obliterate things with one poke. What was also surprising was the existence of actual character development. Not very much but the author tries. Some self reflection on motives, how he accomplishes it, some POV changes occasionally. Character development in similar novels is just adding a few sentences every few chapters to reiterate how MC must right his wrongs / win the final battle / save the human race this time around and then ends there. I also liked the attempts at intelligent writing in the form of magic spell incantations, the hidden stuff every raid and the "history" lessons. Kudos to the translators for doing a great job with those. Bottom line: For this genre, reading any novel past the 1st tends to be make readers more jaded and less forgiving of the fast / mindless / OP plot. What makes this worth reading are the slight differences that make it less cliched. Great novel, definitely entertaining and worth a read. <<less

This one is extremely fast-paced, with few-to-no distractions from the MC and his path to beating the test system that is picking on humanity.

What is rather poorly explained at first (so I don't think it is a spoiler to explain) is that the MC is basically in a video game, with individual instances of a shopping district and inn available to each surviving player in between rounds. So things are clearly designed for solo play:

Spoiler

The MC teams up with people for each round, but the best strategy is to take as many points as possible for himself each time, leaving as few as possible for his teammates...

Well, that being said, it does seem like the MC will end up with a team of friends in the end (since when only 5 people are left, then they would end up always together each time).

[collapse]

The plot is basically a series of MMO video game raid instances, except the descriptions of the fights are pretty visceral and tend to be based on realism (ex: a sword cutting through a limb and incapacitating a monster), so the fights are more gripping than those in pure video-game-dynamics-based worlds.

In the end, say what you will about the simplistic plot and setting, but it does a good job of keeping the action going, with lots of loot and skills to relish gaining - basically like non-stop candy. <<less

I liked the story, partially because it resembled one of my favorite novels before, Reincarnator. However, I disliked the repetitive and boring setup. Temporarily dropped, may pick up again when it reached some sort of turning point.

This was either a 2 or a 3 for me but conceded the writing a point.

The writing (use of imagery, 'show not tell' and other writing techniques) and presentation were solid (comparatively to it's WN brothers).

But,

The story is nothing we haven't seen before, that's not a bad thing if it has an interesting world and characters. Unfortunately, the story does not lend itself to great character development because it's strictly a 90% solo story and any characters that do get introduced either get killed off or disappear just as... more>> fast as they appeared.
This wouldn't impact enjoyment so much if the MC wasn't so standard. He is relatable but his interactions with the world and the other characters are just barely better than flat.

The world isn't much better since it's in a constant state of rapid flux (except for the 'hub'). The novel describes much more what feels like a 'system' than an actual world.

All in all, it's a novel that was doomed before it started as the premise of the story does not lend itself to developing interesting side characters or a interesting deep fantasy world.

It's a shame because I feel the author has potential. <<less

'Master Hunter K' for me is one of the best Korean monster hunting novels second to 'Solo Leveling' and I have read more than 10 or at least tried to.
One of the best merits of this story is the detailed description of the locations, monsters and fights and even other hunters through out the story. Also the 'going back in time' element is used really well and it's not another plot device for the MC.

Unlike most Korean MC here the hunter Kei has an interesting characters and actually communicate... more>> with other, try to guide or help them and plans his actions. Crazy, right? I know. If you have read enough Korean novels you know what I mean.

The Story is full of interesting and actually important side characters. The raid system is both mysterious and well thought. The ending is also very good. I highly recommend reading it if you are tired of reading boring novels. <<less

Here to answer One Simple Question: Is it Shit?

Kinda!
This novel reminds, why I hate novels Like this.
1. Characters don't train to gain power. It is given to the lunatics that either kill eachother or plow onwards mindlessly. The effort is completely negated in this setting.

2. Too many OP items

... more>> 3. Secondary characters change too fast, the only actual character that sticks for a couple of chapters is a summoned wolf

4. All-knowing MC / all-powerfull MC = skipping the entire journey of getting stronger while being in danger. Completely ruins the suspense.

5. Unbelievable interactions. Who the f*ck cares what nationality they are, when they're about to face monsters. <<less

"It was all just a dream" ending.

This was one of the rare novels that I can binge read for hours and not doze off halfway. It keeps the readers always on the edge of their seat and wanting to read more.

... That is, until the abominable ending.

It was not literally a "just a dream" ending but it very well may be seeing how the story ended. The ending felt rushed and the author did not tie up all the loose ends at the end of the story. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoyed the main part of the story. However, I just did not like the conclusion and wished that the author could explain to the readers what was the whole point of the story.

To people who don't mind spoilers:

Out of the entire world population, everyone except MC and his team lost their memories of the raids and only three seconds in the real world had passed. The MC continued to be a poor unemployed guy in Korea and no one would have known that humanity was saved by them. No explanations were given on why 'God' chose to impose this test on humanity as a species. The end.

Honestly, I think this was a reincarnator ripoff when I first started it, and it wasn't actually that bad at all. However, too generic for my tastes. And I don't see where the plot is going.

Still, 4/5. It has nice quality to it.

Generic but well done game-like RPGish wish fulfillment novel, I honestly think this is 3.5 stars since there is barely any plot or world building or impacting character interactions.

It's well written and enjoyable, good novel to read if you like OP characters getting even more OP in a game-RPG setting, but nothing to rave about.

A short but pretty decent read, although I'm not sure why the author made the decision to have such a quick ending. This novel could be made a lot better and leave things on a warmer note if there were a few slice of life chapters to follow up. I think it also could have been stretched to have another 20-30 chapters for the final few "chapters", but alas, I can't really complain with how things turned out.

I found it interesting that it shares elements of the story idea that... more>> Omniscient Reader and alludes to a larger premise but it seems the author didn't want to delve further down that path and leave it up to the reader's imagination

Anyways, considering how short the novel is, I would definitely recommend that everyone that likes this genre to give it a read. <<less

Although I get annoyed sometimes at the author for intentionally making the MC so dense and slow.. It's overall a good novel and I also enjoyed it. There's nothing much on the ending but I like how the author really made closure and gave an ending. Tho I wish there's more for the ending, at least one slice of life chapter would satisfy me.

Started fine, pretty good even. Ended worse than any other LN I have ever read. I recommend not reading this LN just because of how rushed and poorly done the ending is.

Here is a somewhat minor thing that bugged me (there are bigger issues discussed by other people)

Spoiler

Every day a new raid takes place. The whole story occurs in less than 23 days. The last person who dies is sent back to the beginning of the whole ordeal with all their memories. This (assumably) repeats until the raid is passed (it's "God's judgement"). The story mentions that 3000 years passed, which adds up to 140, 000 resets at least. Potentially over 3, 000, 000 resets. Even if the average resetter did it twice, there should be at least (absolute minimum) 70, 000 who know and understand everything that's happening from day 1. Despite this, there are only two characters confirmed to have reset. The cast seems to be dumbfounded by Hunter K's ability to know what will happen (implying they are unaware of the reset mechanism).

This story is decent but has a terrible ending and it doesn't deserve the rating it has. <<less

Master Hunter K is about a man named Sungjin who was the last person to die in the last raid and was sent "back in time" to do everything again from scratch.

The story slowly progresses to:

    1. Tell the reason why they failed the last raid
    2. Understanding why #1 happened
Of course, he becomes stronger too. The latest chapter (ch171) is about #2, the secret is about to be revealed.

They are currently in hiatus because they are, with the author's permission, changing the ending. They claim that the original ending seems rushed so I am hoping it ends well although I also want to read the original ending.

That being said, this story is good. There were just a few moments that I didn't like especially about the MC's way of thinking sometimes so I'm giving it a 4 star.

Edit: Why do I feel like the story has gone a bit soft?

Great read, I recommend it as a second chance story. It's way better than what the summary made me think it would be.

Pro

  • Fast paced but not rushed.
  • Main character is a genuinely good guy, but also strong and mature.
  • In fact the story shows that selfish and arrogant characters are actually sub-par in terms of reaching goals.
  • Side characters are well developed.
  • Long and fulfilling chapters.
Con

  • Only 182 chapters, I wish it would be longer. : (
  • I would have preferred a tad more romance.

This novel is based around repeated battles where 5 people have to kill the boss of an arena with a time limit of around half an hour. The MC is the last human to die from the repeated battles and his consciousness is sent back in time to when the battles first began. The premise sounds like a fusion between Resurrection and Terror Infinity, but the actual novel fails to compare. I rate Resurrection as 4/5 and Terror Infinity as 3/5, by the way. Reading the novel can be summarized... more>> as superman beating up a bunch of fantasy creatures while watching his meaningless stats rise.

The world building is atrocious. The arenas each have 5 party members who are randomly selected from every human participating. After the second mission this is only 0.1% of the original human population, but that's still 7 million people. This means there is a less than a 1 million chance of meeting someone in both the second and third mission, so it's not expected for any repeats to happen until there's less than 1000 people left (and that's still very unlikely). The world gives humans special abilities with an rpg-style. The stats are immediately inflated out of the milky way galaxy when the MC earns more than 10x his starting stats after the first battle. Even with a team of 5 who split their earning evenly would have each of them tripling their stats. And this happens EVERY BATTLE. The mc's stats soon become an exponential function. He also immediately gets a title with +30% to every stat. Despite being op in every way the MC has some trouble fighting bosses and hidden bosses. How could a normal person ever survive. They get maybe 1/5 of the xp and money that the MC does, their titles are weaker, and the need to buy consumables which the MC never buys. After the second mission, the MC is at least 100x stronger and faster than a normal human, but he's only described as really strong and fast. The first boss gives a drop that is super rare, but if you think about even the smallest bit makes 0 sense. One in 5 people who pass the first mission gets one, so there are more of the SUPER RARE items than people after the second mission.

The worst part of the novel is the character (s). There's only one character so far and that's the MC, and since it's almost impossible for repeat side characters to show up, the MC better be pretty damn good. Sadly, he has absolutely no character traits besides being good at fighting. The only explanation about anything that happened before being transported back through time is:

  1. He was the last human to die, so it's safe to say he's good at fighting.
  2. He was an orphan. The only people he ever felt fondly of were the employees at the orphanage, and it's only at the level of acquaintances.
  3. He wasn't accomplished as a fighter when the arena battles started the first time, which is a HUGE plot hole. He wasn't able to hoard all of the xp and money (his groups were competent and worked to succeed together) which means he's way behind in the meta-game that proceeds at an exponential rate. He didn't start off strong and was also the strongest, what? Is everyone else a ret*rded toddler? Even someone who did nothing then back-stabbed the other remaining hunters would be better off than him.
The only other people he meets are the four other people in his party during each battle. In the first time he meets three a**holes and a good-guy cop. The second time he meets three a**holes and a crazy old guy. I didn't really mind this much because a novel should usually start off introducing the world if it isn't placed in a normal modern society.

Spoiler

The third battle starts off with him meeting a c*cky samurai, a well-intentioned north european, a timid nepalese, and a quiet but competent african. Finally people that qualify as actual characters. The MC proceeds to apologize for hoarding the loot, then ignores them. He has a small interaction with the samurai, but it only involves the samurai praising him repeatedly.

[collapse]

Finally, the MC uses a katana. It annoys me so much how the internet gushes about katanas like they're forged by god. The MC also finds an op katana during the third mission (how convenient). It's ret*rded.

Here's some ways the novel could have been good. I'm not a writer and if these do happen, then don't blame me for not making it. The author should have at least hinted at something interesting in the first 20 chapters, instead it was too bland to continue.

Spoiler
  1. Have a character who, despite the pretty much impossible odds, is placed in the same party as the MC repeatedly. This could mean they're placed together by fate or that the robot-like system that governs the arenas actually has intelligent creatures pulling the strings in the background
  2. Punish people from killing each other when not threatened. The MC doesn't do it, but he mentions that he would if he was bothered to. No mention of consequences at all. A coward could back-stab all of his allies after the bosses are killed and reap all of the benefits. The stats increase exponentially, so this is pretty much an optimal strategy.
  3. Relatedly, make the MC feel something when he chooses to hoard all of the loot during every battle. The third mission set this up nocely, but then failed to deliver. The MC just excused it as a necessary evil and the other 4 people don't even think about it. The samurai even implied he understood the battles are zero-sum games, but then forgets I guess.
  4. Replace the MC with literally anyone else. I would actually like to read a novel from the point of view of someone other than the person thrown back through time. It could actually be interesting and unique (but this is a complete tangent).
  5. The magic system should be introduced earlier. Literally no one puts points into magic stats or buys magic tomes. An MC from the future is either ret*rded (this is probably the case),

A pretty general resurrection/game/survival light novel. MC gets to start over so he naturally knows all the aspects of the game and shoots ahead of everyone else.

Each mini arc consists of fighting mobs in that current "chapter (what they call levels) ", killing the boss, and killing the hidden boss. Some of the arcs are splatted with "trolls" (people who attack other players during the chapter) which gives the MC a chance to butcher them.

After the "Chapter" we another mini arc (2 chapters or so worth) of MC buying,... more>> auctioning, looking at equipment, pretty much preparing for next fight.

That is it really so far, there are so hints at Minor Spoiler:
Spoiler

him becoming a ruler due to that ring that allows people pledge to him, which makes them earn 10% less, but he gets a white coin that can be used to buy some special potion (we don't know the full affects of it yet as it hasn't been given to anyone yet).

I should note to people who want to read it, he hasn't do any group building or anything you would think a ruler might do yet. I think it might happen in the future though.

[collapse]

Other than that we have met 3 characters that MC likes and they only get a few appearances out of the 88 chapters so far, so they are very 1D.

My biggest complaint is that the Author started out the stats claiming that 10 of each attribute is what a normal person's stats are and soon MC is getting 3000, then 5000, then 9000 ect... This removes any idea of how powerful these players are and honestly makes it less interesting as we can't relate to the points as much and they are given so quickly.

Also MC isn't really an antihero, he kills those who attack and mostly keeps to himself. <<less

A simple read, it seems. Maybe a little hypnotic, even claustrophobic... One level after each other, like doing only the main quest in a single player game because there is nothing more. It might be a little better in the next chapters?

Some potentially interesting side characters, but the MC is kind of generic, although not too difficult to relate.

I cannot give it a 4 at this time, but it may deserves more in the future. I just don't know if I will give the story a chance, since I am... more>> sending it to the 'pause/let's decide later' shelve. <<less

It's a nice story. More than good enough for me to finish the book, which has been hard recently since I feel I've read all the good ones already (before you judge me, I've probably read around 100-200 light novels not counting manga and anime) so it's been nice getting into a book.

As for the story itself, I liked both the MC and the side characters (granted the SC don't get a lot of screen time/evolution). The fantasy elements are good, the power dynamics felt nice (I like OP MC),... more>> the writing is a solid 8/10 for light novels, and the plot is well-developed.

If I had to say one complaint, the ending is ever so slightly rushed. But I believe this is the second ending the author wrote, so I can understand since he already made the huge compromise of changing his book for the readers.

Overall, 4/5. I would recommend it, and if I could stomach it today it means it's a relatively good book, but I will probably forget most of the plot next year. <<less

Fairly decent novel.

It's a LitRPG novel centred around a sword-wielding protagonist. After failing in his first attempt, the protagonist regresses in time to save humanity. As a result, he ends up being absurdly strong even from chapter 1, but the power creep doesn't make the novel unenjoyable to read.

The action scenes were reasonably well depicted, and I liked the small bits of world-building scattered around, though minimal. The references to Romance of the Three Kingdoms were enjoyable, and the translators explaining the context behind the excerpts from the story elevated... more>> the experience.

However, it was definitely very obvious the author started rushing the story near the end. Fairly typical of web novels, but it still lowers the rating. While the overall storyline was fine, the author started skipping over minute details such as fight scenes, character interaction, or even just tying up some minor loose ends. It's a bit of a shame, but I guess it was also a good thing that the novel ended right as the plot was getting a bit repetitive. Overall, a pretty good experience, and it didn't take long to read either. If you like action novels revolving around a "second chance" with minimal romance and drama, this novel is for you. <<less
