Good EFFING Lord, what a disaster.

Again, what's up with all these "Excellent Premise, but an absolute abortion of an execution" type stories coming out of GLORIOUS NIPPON???

Extremely frustrating read. MC is a hapless NEET with zero sense of self-preservation despite admitting to being a coward from a cowardly family of cowards. Dunno if this is something that Nipponese Otaku readily identify with, which enticed the author of this steaming pile to appeal to those same human failure sinks, or that it's part of this "Japanese Comedy" thing that other peoples... more>> and cultures find extremely repugnant and distasteful.

Perhaps the MC's many failures in both "business" and human (and elf) relations is supposed to be played for comedic effect, or the many unnecessary chapters involving him bragging about his "exploits" to his fellow Nipponese Otaku on the story's fictional version of 2chan are also supposed to be "funny" on some theoretical level, but even with what seems like a solid translation team (translator, editor, and proofreader), this alleged "comedy" fails to cross culture or language barriers.

I mean, it's so bad that TWO different translators have dropped this and J-Novel Club refused to pick up the license for the LN, which is supposed to be an improved version with less "Japanese Comedy."

I must have inadvertently picked up a case of extreme self-hatred to have subjected myself to 57 chapters of this rectal discharge before finally throwing in the towel, just like the two translators and J-Novel Club, but I have to admire the translation team's efforts in keeping up for as long as they did, but maybe they have an "M" streak or something and like punishing themselves. <<less

A very slow progression harem another-world story with an economics and online trade focus rather than the MC being the legendary hero. The MC seems be a ethically-bankrupt physically-weak non-op coward; however as a twist, he has high-morality and meticulous complex strategies to fight adversaries. In fact it’s so slow, the MC refrains from doing anything pe*verted or echii until chapter 30/31.

If you looking for the best harem hero or hero transported from another world story, then look elsewhere. If you looking for epic fights with evil demon lords... more>> or mythical beasts, then look elsewhere. But if you looking for something different in harem or fantasy genre... If you looking for something with a complex economic plot like Maou Yuusha, then look no further. You have found an economics fantasy masterpiece. <<less

Light spoiler about the story till chapter 17:

Spoiler

The boy finds a magical mirror that is connected to another world. The first chapters are about him going between the two world trying to take the chance to make money. Eventually, with the help of a native couple, he decides to become a merchant and he is introduced to the merchant guild. After asking around, he notices that the best way to protect himself is buying a s*ave. Then he meets a merchant that sells elves but the price is astronomical so the merchant ask him for a duel where he will need to win to get the s*ave for free. The duel is about making a political figure accepts a gift from the MC for her 50th birthday.

[collapse]
The world is an european middle age-like world with magic.

The first chapters are an introduction about the protagonist, how he understand that the mirror is a portal to another world, his first encounter with a native couple that eventually will help him build his new life in a town near the portal to his home.

It has a GDR feeling because the MC has various blessings and can get quests from the world (but those are not only his prerogative because even normal people can get a blessing and various quest).

He is trying to be a merchant, will he able to make that happen? Well at least he has various blessings that will help him along the way. <<less

It's not the usual harem/another world story/trading business you'd usually expect. This is basically like what neoshadow has said. Frankly speaking if what you're expecting is that then this is not something that you should be reading. It has slower story progression compared to the rest since unlike the other stories, this is more in-depth, day-to-day progress and how the MC grow in the other world. Unlike other stories where the time skipped quite far, this one actually goes day by day so you can't honestly expect someone to grow... more>> in terms of personality or profit in just 1-2 weeks.

As what neoshadow has said, if you're looking for the usual harem stories or OP hero defeating the demon lord story then this is not for you. What I've seen from all the bad ratings might be that due to the reason that they are looking for a run-of-the-mill transported to another world story. <<less

Reviewed at c40, rated 4.

Despite its business/economics tags above, Netooku Otoko up to c40 is just a light read about the days of an ex-NEET who gained an artifact that allowed him to go back-and-forth between two worlds. In the other world, the MC was a merchant with many supporting unique talents and he did do some trades between both worlds, but the story developed slowly as he was more a cliche safe-seeker than a creative risk-taker. Therefore, although we probably could expect more business and adventures to come in... more>> the future, it is wiser to take this novel with intention to "enjoy the ride" instead of "enjoy the thrill" or "enjoy the tricks".

The Author's narrative was not really good, but there were strategically placed hooks that may string you along if this novel is your kind of thing. TL DR; this novel is not for everyone, but some of you who prefer Japanese slice-of-life might find it interesting. <<less

The plot may be slightly slow than an average world building or money making novels out there but it's actually a relaxing read. This novel might not be everyone's cup of tea but I found that the plot kinda string me along and makes me feel like reading it nonetheless.

Comedy? Not even funny.

Action, Adventure? Where?

Literally 1 whole volume was introducing girls for his harem. And it's still growing. If you take a look at vol 7 cover, you'll see it's not going to stop anytime soon.

One would think with Net Auction on title, it would focus more on trading and shit. Nope, this is a story about his harem. He doesn't need to work for anything, and constantly thinks with his dick. Everything is pretty much handed to him, including his harem.

  1. gets harem easy
  2. waits until 2nd volume to make a move
  3. runs away
This MC is one of those typical japanese dense ret*rded MC. And he's probably one of the worse one. Seriously what the fk.

  • in a fantasy world with swords and magic and monsters.
  • Magic exists
  • Has magician job
  • only uses female s*aves to fight
  • tried magic once for the first time... after weeks... for a split second
  • is talented
  • Never used again.

This is a nice slice of life novel if anyone's looking for a slow progression harem another-world story. The only thing that might be lacking from this is character interaction. (Which would make it a great novel if there are more conversations among the characters)

Overall still an enjoyable read, but based on the development of the recent chapters, I could expect something more now.

Story: 5/5
Character: 3/5
Translation: 4/5 (earlier chapters) , 4.5/5 (recent chapters)

So I stopped reading at 20 chapters in and yeah MC just gets screwed over and screwed over it was seriously starting to piss me off

Writing isn't that good doesn't flow at all moments that should be passionate like reading a love letter the author did horrible the MC is kinda dense and slow and yeah I can't continue this novel any longer.

don't suggest this novel unless you like seeing a MC get treated like a side character and getting tricked constantly

TL;DR: Yet an other of those boring novels from japan, even though the base idea had a lot of potential.

When a character supposed to be at least decent in trading, deception and cunning (in a story specifically about these) is let down severely by a poor writer.

The "plot" is so contrived that the author had to introduce "quests" given by the gods as the reason for people interacting with each others (and not in an interesting way either, sadly).

The characters are shallow at best (most don't even have a scrap... more>> of personality, even those that are part of the plot), with very basic dialogues not helping.

Overall, it feels like yet an other of those many light/web novels that have a concept that could be very interesting, but with a series of flaws that make them unremarkable at best.

Among those flaws, a very simplistic writing, with mostly basic sentences, simple words, detached sentences (rather than proper, connected paragraphs) and an inability to take advantage of the first/third person narration. Shallow/non-existent plot, removing any sense of progression through a constructed story (it doesn't need to be huge, but it's nice when you don't feel like you are reading a collection of side stories). Blank protagonist, that insists on hiding himself (because it's a cultural thing in japan, sadly) while still doing things that will definitely attract attention (be it those with power or those that introduce technology/items). Insistence on following what seems to be guide lines with "harem" (just to put various template women near the main character), "Japanese food/culture is the best" (understandable given that they are Japanese and write for that public, but why go for a European medieval setting?), "s*aves" (mostly to fill the harem easier and to fulfill the "hiding")...

If those authors spent a bit more time on making characters and plot, and made a better use of their language skills (they are writers, they are supposed to have at least a decent vocabulary, and readers are not that dumb to not be able to understand a proper sentence right?), we could be flooded with novels that are entertaining to read, and also worth paying for.

I mean it, there are so many of those novels that have an interesting idea behind it, and most of them could be significantly better with "just" that. <<less

The writing is not HORRIBLE, but is extremely, tiresomely repetitive. The MC is cowardly and horrible at making money and negotiating in a story about doing business... He gets a harem handed to him (because of the cliche setting, not because he does anything impressive), but as with so many of these cliche tsundere freefalls you can tell that he is not going to actually succeed with any of the women for an incredible amount of time.

None of the other characters have particularly great personalities either since the author is... more>> fairly poor at writing stimulating dialogue if not about the plot or general situations, so I really cannot see any way this is worth reading. <<less

This is one of the most irritating novels I've read. The MC is just too s*upid in life overall. First, why does he keep calling himself a NEET? He actually had several jobs. They might not have been a normal office jobs, but jobs nonetheless. He is also doing business reselling used stuff in the auctions and actually making a profit. Yet every darn chapter there is at least one line "I am just a 21-year-old virg*n NEET". I get it already, move on now!!

MC supposed to have experience... more>> in trading and some other jobs, yet he is utterly s*upid. One of the biggest complaints I have is that why the hell would you post on the web something along the lines "I have a mirror portal to another world" and even pictures!? Do you really want to get rid of it?? The logical ending of this novel should be as follows: some psychopath from the web reads his post and actually believes him. He then tracks down MC using his web data and kills his whole family at night and steals all of the mirrors. Then rampages in the other world in his house and gets killed by Rebecca (maybe). Why is that web sh*t even there? It is really irritating and s*upid.

The story progression... Overall for about 20 chapters, the author kept me somewhat interested, but as the story goes on, it becomes more and more boring and irritating. It is filled with the most irritating cliche and overall the writing is quite poor. The author has a tendency to state something at the very end of the chapter, and then he would just not talk about it in the next chapter, or at least half of the chapter. This jumping between different scenes is just so annoying. Another side of this problem is that the author tends to jump in a middle of some event like MC last chapter was in the hunter's house and then he is suddenly in the middle of the town giving him a dagger. And then after a while, the author writes: "the story went as follows..." and would recite the past events. This kind of situation happens quite often is also quite annoying after a while.

The author doesn't seem to know what he wants this novel to be. It appeared that it should be about trading, but there is very little trading. In the first 50 chapters the MC

    • Bought s*aves
    • Had one time sale from a stall
    • Bought a place for a regular stall
I mean almost nothing really happened for a freaking 50 chapters. Harem? He has plenty of girls, yes, but there is very little interaction with them honestly. Even less something that resembles romantic interaction. Oh, and the tropes... The princess appears to be tsundere, but she is not in reality? The MC is getting c*ckblocked multiple times by different girls... He cowers at the thought of s*x with the girls even though he b*tches every freaking chapter that he is a 21-year-old virg*n. So yea, this is very very slow paced... What did they do in the 50 chapters? Well... it took 20 chapters to get the s*aves, 20 more chapters to by clothes for the s*aves. It took about 10 chapters to get to the first town and about 40 chapters to start doing any sort of trade and training... I mean he bought the s*ave for the purpose of being his bodyguard (because her b**bs are big) and then for the next 20 chapters he goes with her to the restaurants to eat, to the market, to the performance... And yes, turned out the girl can't do anything, so it's not like she can protect him from anything. So yea, for about 50 chapters all he did was go shopping.. Only after about 40 chapters he started to actually train and learn things a little bit. And got the useless girl to train as well. Oh, and he was leeching off someone else to get his house up and running and buy all kinds of stuff... I mean seriously, he didn't do anything noteworthy for 50 chapters... And he is supposed to be smart?

Then magic... he saw how a magician in the performance showed off water and fire magic, then he was able to produce fire himself. And then he went and called his s*ave-princess magic a cheat skill because she could light a fire using magic... Even though he himself could do the same...

Now about his skills... Well, he gets some interesting skills and then.. never uses any of them... Why did he never use appraisal on any of his s*aves? Why does he not try the other skills he has? Because he failed once? It's just s*upid...

And the most useless thing ever in this novel, the tool made for the purpose of moving the plot because MC is just too s*upid to move the plot himself: the guidance of the spirit. The spirit apparently gives out quests that a mandatory to complete... MC currently has like 5 of them and yet he does not even try to achieve them... I can't wait for something to happen and yet, MC just dicks around in the first city and can't even manage a single stall properly. He has 2 quests to go to different cities and one more to hut monsters. Yet he does nothing...

So basically the author just keeps trying to do so many things, yet, he can do none... The story overall is somewhat interesting, but because MC is s*upid it's just too irritating and stagnant... I am even willing to overlook undeveloped side characters because MC alone spoils the whole novel... <<less

This is actually not bad. But it clearly does not deserve 5 stars!
-Typical virg*n Otaku with elf fetish
-Everything to easy for MC
-There's hardly any story development at all

Don't forget this WN is 164 Chapters. Its very short and makes no progress. I had a lot of high expectations too since the summary was genius. The romance is pretty terrible too

The girls fall in love to easily. It feels like he took advantage of the Dark Elf since she's poor, desperate and with no other option. She blindly obeys his every wish since the beginning. The Princess was ok at first. I loved that she has like a "princess role" where she delusionals herself of being someone high and mighty but then she turns annoying. If there's anything that had development, it's Rebecca! She was there since the beginning and slowly fell in love with MC. But it doesn't seem she will end up with him looking at the illustrations. There was a part were the MC felt used because she only helped him for "spirit stone". Man I felt so sad but in the end MC got over it like nothing the next chapter WTF. You had so much to work with there..

[collapse]

It just feels like a lot of wasted potential. If Rebecca doesn't end up in his Harem then this story is not worth reading! <<less

It's okay.

It takes a bit to pick up, but the characters are mostly enjoyable and the writing isn't bad. If you're looking for a story where the MC battles monsters and becomes the strongest in two volumes, this isn't it. It also isn't a story where the MC runs back and forth between worlds and becomes instantly rich. This is the adventures of MC-san and his elves.

My favorite segments have been the Internet Forum parts, which are pretty funny if you're familiar with 2ch. This novel is certainly more enjoyable... more>> than the battle harem tr*sh that gets 5 stars on this site. <<less

Wile the concept is okay it's riddled with issues, the main one is that there is no conflict or issue that needs resolving and if there is he gets the answer by it falling into his hands, meaning we don't learn anything about the characters because they never have to interact with anything they just "float" along the current.

I don't really mind wish fullfillment stories but this one was dreadfully boring due to the characters not having any well... character.

it's not offensive, just so effortless and bland i'd never recommend... more>> it to anyone <<less

I never do reviews but this novel really pissed me off forcing me to write one. The writing is repetitive, tedious and very unentertaining. I fell asleep a lot of times with this which never happened with other slice of life novels that I'm reading.

I don't know if it's the writing style or the prose used but getting through each chapter is a slog.

Don't waste your time reading this. There's a ton of other novels that you can read instead.

-Bragging on the Internet. "I can connect to other world!!" "Post it on the forum as an anonymous!" "Share photos on the Internet!" That's quite a dumb thing to do. And the forum took up an entire chapter. So far, 3 chapters were wasted.
-Parasite. He is a NEET in the real word, relying on his parents wealth to take care of him. In the other world, he asked someone to pay for his s*ave, repairs his mansion and buy him horses.

Despite my 3-star rating, I found it enjoyable for a while. I thought the side-story chapters about the web forum were good comedy reliefs, if a bit padded, and the characters were likable enough to keep me interested. The world-building was okay, and it introduced magic, which seemed like something neat to explore.

That said, I do recognize it has many faults. It feels like the story has no direction. It never developed the plot points it set up. Maybe it's because the story develops so slowly, but I want something... more>> to happen within a reasonable amount of time. Within the first 15, he had some conflict that let him get his s*aves, but the next 50 have just been him getting ready to live in the town. It just hasn't been particularly interesting.

It has the feel of "Something might happen eventually, so I should read one more chapter to see if it does." For example, finally get a confession? Interrupted and author deus-ex's it so that MC doesn't understand. Trololol just read the next 50 chapters to maybe actually have them *gasp* hold hands.

Maybe it is the TRUE slow-life, and the others (Slow life frontier, A ranked slow-living, death march, Jikuu Mahou, etc) aren't. I'd put it slightly below Jikuu Mahou perhaps, which I consider to be a below average time killer. <<less
