It's damn fun to read this shameful story. Zhang ye keeps getting in troubles with his boss and kept plagiarising other people's work. The shameful thing is that he is known as a genius.

he hate bad things but he think that what he does is a service to both worlds.

it's a shame that the novel is banned.

The selling point of this novel is being shameless. The shameless cheater protagonist is shamelessly overshaming all the most shameless bastards who are shameless enough to try to shame him. In the fillers the shameless protagonist is shamelessly being taken advantage of by all his shameless relatives and friends. That is it.

Why read it? The author is giving the MC different world masterpieces to shamelessly cheat on everybody shameless. And the translator/editor is corteous enough to give interesting footnotes with proper links. So eventually there's some entertaining compendium on chinese... more>> culture for us to read.

Why not read it? Sometimes it seems too shameless and base even for a chinese comedy. Too many peanut gallery chapters. And... it becomes boring at times. Though from the comments I see people love all the repetitive face-smacking. So the choice is yours. <<less

It was interesting how the things were set up but clearly the execution of the story and characters are very lacking this one star rating isn't even about the "China's great bow down & receive their righteous face smacking" It is deeply rooted in how shallow the villains are considering they can't even put up a fight against the MC. I guess this rating I gave is just to express my disappointment because of my high expectations, It felt good reading the earlier chapters but things went down hill considering... more>> the MC can't even improve his character or learn, can't blame him considering the author can't even make up something intelligent. <<less

A hilarious story. Not only is there great amount of humour to this story, but this story contains an immense amount of cultural references of China. Including, but not limited to: Chinese ancient literature, Chinese martial arts, Chinese Communist party, Chinese family hierarchy, Chinese nationalism (and patriotism), Chinese prejudices, stereotypes, and biases. It's all there, unaltered, and rich in quantity.

Now onto the humour. It's the type of story that is so rife with indignation, and sense of belonging that the reader cannot help be moved by the passion. There's an... more>> arc for literally every single microcosm within society. Which usually ends with Zhang Ye rallying the people against anyone, and anything. The selfishness of Zhang Ye, the casualness of his defiance, makes the humour Just all that better.

The greatest negative however has to be that Zhang Ye, is immensely single-minded, and most of his intelligence does come from his utilisation of the game mechanic. Which does also mean that he's manipulated very easily. Quite pathetic in many ways.

A recommended novel to change pace a little. <<less

This novel is good - it has it's charm, interesting idea, good characters, funny MC... but I rated it that low because of the overly repetitive plot - MC goes to some place; works hard using his otherwordly knowledge; someone powerful doesn't like his attitude or powerful person's relative/friend wants to take MC's place; MC gets kicked out; MC curses publicly that someone so much that he/she/they coughs up blood or gets into accident; if that doesn't happen, MC continues to destroy that person; and lastly - MC goes to... more>> another place and the same thing is happening again. At some point it starts to get boring.

Spoiler

Also - I didn't like that MC used his epic powers too rarely and it felt like it was very forced - In my opinion, he should do the lottery more frequently to get more interesting items - even if they are just for fun, not for story

I read this novel for three reasons... one, it's different from the other novels I read (modern setting), two it does convey a bit of contemporary chinese culture (poems, music, creative ads,...), three the sheer pace at which the translation is progressing. There just aren't that many complete translations out there, and the ones in mid translation often have you waiting for new chapters. This one has one chapter per day plus many bonus.

It's not the greatest novel out there but if you don't treat it seriously, it works despite... more>> its repetitiveness (which all other novels suffer from as well - it's always cultivate fight win cultivate fight...). There is no major plot, no bad guy to finally defeat, no dead parents to revive, so story being incomplete is not a problem. You can start reading at any time and stop at any time too. Just treat it as a light comedy and see how it goes.

As I understand it some of the juicier scenes were redacted by the author but ended up in the translation anyways. Just skip those parts where Zhang Ye starts feeling up his landlady, it basically has zero influence on the story / plot. <<less

Use it to increase your exposure to Chinese classics if you're interested in that sort of thing. You can learn the poems that get referenced in all the other Chinese novels. Most of the humor is wordplay, which does not translate well. The plot's repetitious and the characters (including protagonist) are very flat. The entire setting revolves around whatever is most convenient for the protagonist, and pretty much all the bad stuff that happens to him is his own fault for being such a jerk. The "romance" sections are creepy,... more>> too.

I read this far because I keep seeing a lot of these poems referenced in other chinese novels and this novel (and its translator team!) goes a bit more in-depth in explaining them. <<less

I'm start this because I start to bored of xianxia novel. That when I'm found something totally different.

PRO
-MC have the same personality like those xianxia novel but what make this novel different is how author use modern day and using CN literature as selling point.
-When MC using some very well know piece that fun and make you anticipate in excite what he will use. For example Zen exchange is good and "whising we last forever" is one of the best song of teresa teng, the author make me... more>> waitng for more like Li Bai, Du fu. However, as a Chinese descendant who still live under sinosphere country, I may have a bias and more into the story
- The story is simple but fun. Repetitive is not wrong as long as it still interesting. At least untill this far the story still interesting.
-Some say Antagonist is flat and easy to read and MC is those type who follow CH doctrine of " better die than kneel" too much. But I guess that why many people like too read this kind of MC. RL is full of people like the antagonist MC encounter and we can't do anything but kneel then we acknowledge that as "common sense" though in our mind the picture of boss knock out by our punch is already played several time pop up.
Con
-Too much nationalism. Some part of story is okay but some arc is too much especially Spring gala and people say there are more. But I guess only Korea and Japan will be target because other countries around china tend to be bullied by china even nowadays, except those two.
-Romance is suck and I guess everybody who read this novel agree on this part. <<less

This novel is really good and hilarious. I know some people use Reviews to read novels I advice that you shouldn't You should have read it first and have your own opinion in the novel. 5/5. Best story ever. Not your usual "I kill your whole family" Chinese web novel. You can read the synopsis from the other reviews. I have to say that to appreciate this story fully you may need to know Chinese because a lot of the songs he writes, the people he refers to, the poems, advertis**ents, variety shows, etc etc are all from the actual world. Google and youtube helps a lot to hear that was what the song was about. I am not a Chinese from China and so I have problems struggling with some of the references but nothing google cant solve.

"It's so f**king racist!"
"Why is the MC always so petty? Grow up!"

Those are perfect examples of remarks I've come across when it comes to IRAS.

First of all, racist? There's a "nationalistic" tag above, what the freaking hell were you expecting? Now, this novel is definitely not something that will appeal to everyone, so if you can't take the whole racism heat, I suggest you be on your way.

Granted, the novel is repetitive: Zhang Ye being himself > people finding trouble > him challenging them > them cursing him >... more>> him face-smacking them.

Zhang Ye is a petty, average-looking, short-tempered, nationalistic and shameless to the core bastard.

But so what ? I've been through God knows how many arcs and 550 chapters, and I still crave my daily dose of him. PS: The novel is super well-written, and Legge and CK are doing an amazing job with the translation. <<less

This made me laugh multiple times. The main character does have many morale problems, and does things very recklessly and shamelessly. However, the comedy is pure gold, and this can be considered to be similar to a wuxia/xianxia novel, but at the same time, way different. As for plot: The main character wants to be famous. One day, he got transported to a game world, where everything is the same but all the famous works and famous stars are different. He starts his journey at a radio station, and keeps... more>> moving to different careers while face-slapping people at the same time. <<less

This novel is an amazing mixture of slapstick comedy and refined literature. It's fun to read the different aspects of Chinese literature and culture through Zhang Ye's exploits. But I have to say, this is a novel that you'll either love a lot or hate a lot. There's nothing in-between. Why? Well that's because this novel has pros and cons that sit on extreme sides. The MC plagiarizes the literature and knowledge from his world (our world) to gain fame. It might seem like he doesn't do anything by himself,... more>> as some of the earlier reviews mentioned, but I'd like to differ. If nothing else, then you'll have to commend the MC for his guts, patience, sense of justice (even though he's a plagiarist :P) and hardworking nature. Yes, he is childish and some parts of the novel seem to be too puerile but no novel can be perfect, right? And since this novel sort of follows the xianxia trope, you'll definitely find childish and pe*verted stuff in it. Well, if you want to read the novel, I'll give you a head's up about the negative points. The novel contains some elements that should not be in a novel based on modern times like improper s*xual behaviour (I haven't found r*pe yet, and I don't think it'll go so overboard), over-nationalistic ideas, racism, messed up idea of romance/love. The only romance I've seen upto ch 312 is based on the MC's teenager-like s*xual attraction for hot women and not any emotions. So that's a major turn-off for me and that's one of the biggest reasons I didn't rate it a 5. In the end I'd still recommend it for reading because it's an awesome read. :P <<less

It was really good and I was reading it really diligently until all the RACISM against black people, Americans, Europeans, Japanese and Korean people. Basically everyone not Chinese.

It's so called "nationalism" in th book but I don't think all Chinese people feel the same.

Honestly, think about the situation reversed:

Would Chinese people happily continue to read a Korean novel that bashes Chinese people? I don't think so. If black people called Chinese people names and said "that s*upid Chinese", would the Chinese readers continue to read it with eagerness? I don't... more>> think so. Other than the blatant racism, it was a good novel. I thought I could ignore it and just continue reading it but as a Canadian that values diversity, I can't continue. Dropped. <<less

Brother, o brother!! I finished this novel to the latest chapters in 3 days straight day to night.

This is just so darn good, shameless, comedic, cheat in real modern life, ripping off ideas of his original world and making use of them to reach great heights. Haii.. Not going to lie, I don't normally read this type of novel but it comes so critically acclaimed and I was running out of things to read. As others mentioned, this series is just too hilarious with too much epic win and OPness. The ring mechanic grants the main character the power he needs to go from ordinary to extraordinary and that's what makes things so great. The sense of righteousness and justice, the over the top absurdities, and the pure humor is reminiscent of the early volumes of Golden... more>> Boy, as well as Great Teacher Onizuka. 5/5 definitely read <<less

It's nice to read something that's set in the modern era in chinese novels. More of these types of chinese novels should get translated instead of the same old xianxia ones. The comedy is great in IRAS. The best part about it is the reaction chapters. Zhang Ye is a host and also has more professions than you can count in one breath. He even earned the title of "the most unprofessional host" because of how many professions he's involved with in the entertainment business. He's a badass with how... more>> he loses his temper every time a superior pisses him off and then he retaliates with a poem to insult them. People even said to avoid giving him a mic lol. He also can be a troll and derpy sometimes but it makes him lovable among the readers and his fans in the novel.

The novel can get pretty repetitive sometimes since it's just rinse and repeat but it's still fun to read when Zhang Ye keep causing trouble. Some readers say Zhang Ye just plagiarizes literary works from his old world but no one cares since those people are not around to complain. If I was Zhang Ye, I would do the same since you have the resources so you might as well use them or it'll just be a waste. I recommend reading the raws if you know Chinese since many meanings can get lost in translation because of cultural differences and some things only can be understood clearly in the original language. Examples are the poems and Weibo slangs. <<less

It's an enjoyable, humorous slice-of-life novel with regular moments of tension. The MC's a belligerent guy with a high opinion of himself, but he's nonetheless priceless to humanity. If he weren't concerned with becoming an all-around renowned celebrity during his lifetime, he'd have no trouble with undeservedly becoming history's most praised writer or poet as the mouthpiece of another world's thinkers.

Besides occasional unrealistic situations, there are a few other unlikable things:

First, the beginning sets the story up as a game world. Though that was one way to make things fly,... more>> I feel that it makes everything matter less than if it were set in an alternate reality or something of that sort. Instead, the MC's living a single-player RPG that exists for his sake, and who knows whether the other characters are real people or what.

Second, the increasingly common lecherous scenes are unnecessary and uncomfortable to read. I prefer to skip them. The MC's bouts of perversion are tacky at best, and they often cross far into mol*station. Their presence lowers the novel's merit.

Third, the MC's an utter idiot about saving money and using his special lottery power. I guess he's supposed to be impulsive, but it's vexing that it doesn't matter how many yuan he earns or points he accumulates, because he'll just waste them all and require luck/the plot to continue going forward. It keeps him as an underdog, which is understandable but irritating and lazy writing.

Finally, the MC's character hasn't truly been developed. He's settled into being pe*verted, brash, and vengeful. His moments of kindness and unexciting industriousness are supposed to make him more likable. But he's missing the innards that would flesh out his character and tie behavior and motivations together. Or maybe I just don't want to accept how much of a bastard he is.

Still, when it doesn't try to be a dating/nudity game, the story's powerful charisma drives it forward. It's an interesting journey. <<less

This novel is definitely one of my favorites. I was recommended this some time ago and always skipped it thinking it wouldn't suit my usual novel tastes; however, I couldn't be any more wrong. This novel combines both a modern world setting with a game element layout, as well as a delightful MC who I believe emcompasses the good and bad within all humans; but finds the most amusing ways to showcase them. One of my favorite things about this novel is that each and every action of the MC... more>> provides an equal reaction which can appear at any time later in the story. As in, there are no pointless fillers even though this novel could be considered a comedy. I can't wait for more chapters, and I will also update this Review as soon as I return from vacation. <<less
