Mediocre. Sometimes I wish the authors would learn a thing or two about game design, before doing a virtual reality novel.

It makes 0 sense to deny old players the chance to play new classes, that would leave a bad after taste for old people that wanted to main a new class. Also would make new players that already have a gap in information, be even more misguided, because there wouldn't be any guides for new classes for them to follow.

Secondly, obviously this author never really played a MMO, where people... more>> minmax to the utmost, if people knew that resetting is such a op thing, more and more people would reset.

The taming process is also quite similar to LMS, torture, and somehow the author made it bland.

The author lacks the prowess to make the plot work. Also, I don't even understand the MC personality yet. At least LMS gave me a reason why he tortured the summons, here, it just dropped out of nowhere. <<less

Giving this a 1.5/5 and dropping it.

Reasons? Well, this completely fails as an MMORPG-based novel (just like plenty of others before it). Why? Because despite all the terms like "theorycrafting, " "pros, " "guild wars, " etc., it's evident that the author has almost no idea as to how MMORPGs actually work. Bad numbers, "hidden / secret classes", bullsh*t luck and the normal things which doom MMORPG-based novels. Honestly, I think this novel just tries to rip off some parts of LMS and fails badly at it.
1) Same type... more>> of character who can "summon".
2) Pretty much the same treatment of "summons". Weed's treatment is a lot more cruel but overall they still use the bribery of naive "summons" to control them.
3) Same use of a "hidden / secret class", the difference in which is that Weed's adventures are actually epic. You can completely remove the real life parts of LMS and it would still come out epic. This novel hasn't even had one moment which comes close to being described as epic. Also, what makes Weed's work is because nobody even bothered to look at his class. (Even he was just forced to play the class) They thought it was pointless and a joke. In this novel plenty of people tried it out, yet nobody bothered experimenting at all? Like I said, it's almost like most people in this novel is playing an MMORPG for the first time.
4) There are actually jokes / situations in LMS which I laughed, or at least chuckled at. While those jokes got old quickly in LMS (because the MC has no character development) at least it had those moments. Up to now there still hasn't been a single one of these moments in this novel for me.
5) Pretty much the same "dense" character when it comes to MC to female character interactions.
6) Honestly, I think it's just because the actual writing ability of LMS' author is just better compared to this novel's author.

There's a review which stated that LMS is currently worse than this novel. All I can ask him is - "How many chapters does LMS have?" Even I dropped that (look at my review for LMS) yet I dropped it AFTER reading tons of chapters. This one isn't even on the 50th chapter and already gotten stale.

Another review stated that having to reroll characters in normal. First of all, it works in real MMOs because YOU HAVE CHARACTER SLOTS and if there's a game where you only have 1 slot, you can simply make another account. You don't lose your main character trying to reroll a new one. In this novel, you pretty much have to erase your original character. I think the author made it this way on purpose though. Why? I'm not sure but maybe because if that "feature" didn't exist then plenty of other "pros" would also run summoners and figure out how to actually play the class, making the MC appear not special at all. <<less

I wish sometimes some who would critize a web novel should read a bit more before saying its bad (unless the beginning is too horrible to look at)

I just can't help commenting about someone saying the author have never played an MMO..

First most (as far as I know its ALL) MMO would not let you just change job I mean I've played a few MMO and i've been using priest class never had I chance that I could just suddenly change class without creating new char or rebirth.. So... more>> if there's a new job obviously you need to create a new char.. The old players just have a difficult decision to make, not denying them the chance and players make the guide though there will be official guides don't expect it to be too informative this is not a visual novel..

And speaking of min/max.. All I can say is your a sadist? The MC took about 4 months (i think) to raise his char to lvl 93 and its not even max level and the reincarnation item is even 5.2mil. For getting the best bonus and you expect people to abuse resetting? Just remember the MC has plot armor so the average player would take longer so only those who are rich and not interested in being in the top 10000 would do that..

And the this is not like LMS in the taming process, , he (not the MC) might not have played a lot of games since there are games where to capture a monster you have to reduce there HP and inflict stat debuffs to increase chance (DQ monsters), so the MC naturally a game addict will hit the monster first, and later when he gets his first permanent monster he will treat it kindly even feeding it delicious food. What is so LMS about that?

Well enough about the rant.. The only lacking thing about this is the transition of the MC from using the bow to staff, from how the story goes I won't be expecting the MC becoming a frontliner, he was practically shoved into a support, unless he gets a sword for tamers which I think is weird <<less

Myononi translations did a legit good job on this translation before they shut down. Webnovel took over the translation and it went from being good to being s h I t. How difficult is it to allow a good translation group to do their thing and not license override them every g o d d a m time. F you quidian you guys with your tr*sh business model suck. Half of the novels you take over stop getting legit translated and start getting mtl slammed. Then you wonder why the... more>> average page view per chapter goes down by 90%. I love this type of terrible story, enough that I learned the language to be able to self translate previous novels. Thank you author for completing your story in a satisfying way but quidian should go die. <<less

I'm really enjoying the story so far. I like it because it feels a lot more laid back than other VR novels. Don't know about later, but currently there is no constant "let's make enemies over the littlest thing" trope, no over the top drama. Just a threat of getting a bad report card sent home (freakin tame). Doesn't seem to have any dark aspects too (as of now). Usually expect these types of stories that focus on saying "this game looks so real" to have some shady company background... more>> mixed in, but nopes, not touched.

The MC actually feels believable, he's not exactly OP, just a veteran player who comes off as OP since he restarted @lvl1, it doesn't completely wipe your personal skills or memory of you playing the game, so of course he'd do better than a real newbie. Which is pretty normal for a lot of gamers.

Don't know why some reviewers think having only access to 1 character slot is unbelievable and knocking off stars for that. Used to be freakin common, and just like in this novel, only way to get new class was to erase/remake character or use items to reset stats/class. It's like complaining when a game only has 1 save slot. Sure more save/character slots would be good, but not all games have it (or they later add option for another character slot, but for a price...).

edit: guess I spoke too soon (earlier review was when I read up to ch30), seems like PKing some would be PKers is hinted to cause trouble later, but not sure how the story will play out on that. On brightside, he immediately got 2 more familiars that can evolve so looking forward to see what happens. <<less

I got tricked by the reviews and postponed this novel for a long time.

First off, there isn't anything wrong about not making the new classes available to veteran players. Why? Because to log into their account, iris scan is required (so no using dummy account like other scummy vrmmo). Also, each account can only create 1 character, meaning, to use new class you have to restart from 0 (which is common in real life games too)

As for hidden maps, some of them were said to be summoner exclusive, so... more>> as the most summoner who rush to travel around maps to level, its natural for him to find them. Also, some of them are also unexplored due to being new contents so not strange if nobody stumbled onto them either.

Overall it is a pretty interesting novel as a protagonist who relies mainly on his summon and leadership (he does hold combat ability personally but it doesn't compare to other classes due to lack of combat skills) <<less

Interesting premise but with only a few chapters I can't really say how good the story is yet. MC seems like he's going to be the OP type but within reasonable limits. Translation quality is good and has helpful notes at the end of the chapter. Will update review once more chapters are released.

[UPDATE] Story is entertaining but not amazing. Chapters are mostly the MC monologuing basic game knowledge (what a tank is, how kiting works, stats, etc). Very little actually occurs in each chapter. While the story is light... more>> in substance it has a decent plot. Good casual read. <<less

Expect plot holes and offensively bad math. The author has an extreme inability to understand basic mathematical and economic principles such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and hyper-inflation. He also lacks any concepts related to good game design or profitable business practices.

If you're able to ignore all numbers within the story however, then you'll be left with a fairly generic story about someone becoming OP in a VRMMO using a hidden class. It does have the benefit of not having revenge chains (so far) though, and isn't really a bad series.... more>> Its just not really anything special either. Try it if you're bored. <<less

Very interesting and unique for sure.

Potential, stats, and personalities are all different even if its the same type of monster. No Animal Abuse unless you count hunting/capturing them as animal abuse. He treats his familiar pretty well - I mean he isn't stingy like Weed. Tbh I like it better than Moonlight Sculptor, for the plot is dying and weed is a terrible MC.

At the Moment, He has a beast familiar that he raised since lvl 1 and looking to get a ice golem :D

Wow, who knew a story about the Summoner class could be so entertaining? This is about taming, evolving and fighting with pets in VR, a very fun and unique concept! The closest thing IMO is the Charm of Soul Pets or Emperor of Solo Play, which says a lot.

Another awesome thing is that our MC actually makes smart decisions. The plot isn't defined by long quest chains that bring him to OPness, he works for it by going to the right places (from veteran knowledge), skilful micro-management of summons, and...... more>> theorycrafting! Not to mention this guy gives pro tips to his fans ;)

I don't understand why people say this is like LMS at all. One is a summoner and the other is a sculptor/blade master, playing styles are totally different. Weed is a cold, hardworking machine, Ian is much more "human". Weed has a bunch of people that follow him for no apparent reason, while TM actually has realistic character interactions?

People with a bone to pick can go back to their sword and magic novels, but I will enjoy this light-hearted story for what it is.

Edit: The arc at chapter 200 is a bit dull so far, so I'll update my rating accordingly. For now, it's still 5 stars~ <<less

Mediocre. Forgettable. Uninspired.

These three words describe Taning Master perfectly. Every aspect of this novel is generic. The characters, world-building, and plot are extremely basic. In fact, it feels more like a slice-of-life than an action novel. If this is your first VRMMO novel, you might enjoy it. But if you've read LMS, Ark, Emperor of Solo Play, etc, you'll notice that Taming Master lacks quality.

Pretty generic. I mean, yes, the tamer thing sounds nice at first, but as time goes on... not really. MC just gets more and more OP tames, and unlike the 'tamer' genre, he doesn't have much interactions with the ones he tamed, all he sees is money.

I've read a lot further than the translations, and honestly I don't think TL will be able to finish this (since it's still ongoing), I'm not going to spoil anything, but I'll say this. I don't see where the novel is going plotwise. MC... more>> just gets stronger and stronger, and new elements are added into the mix every few arcs, but that's just it. It gets pretty boring later, and author can't even keep track of the skills he wrote in the novels. (Like forgetting title effects, skill cooldowns, etc)

But still good if you enjoy reading generic VR fantasy, or as a nice pass-time between releases, I guess <<less

The guy just likes to game, so much he ignores school. Go to college, get a good job, and make money is what society wants from him. Actually he makes a ton of money in game, so who needs school anyways. Well that's his thoughts, but when threatened by his professor to send a report card to his parents the MC panics a little. Most likely his parents might make him come back home to farm. That's the general synobsis of what's been translated, minus the cool gaming system and... more>> up the MCs playing style. The vr world for this web novel is trying to be realistic as possible. So far no development on any character besides the MC and his dog. Npcs don't look like they'll play a big part. The MC tries to analyze every aspect of the game. That's what he enjoys doing. Let's catch, a thousand wolves to see if there are any differences between them. He does this with a class that's losing popularity because leveling is harder than most others. He finds out how to play this new class and breaks the game because of how he analyzes things and exploits advantages. <<less

13 chapters out, although the story is only in it's beginning phase, there is something in Tama that might differ it from other ordinary vr novels.

There is no vr-drama here so far which is another reason why I enjoyed it, the MC is known to be a great gamer, but is not in any case overpowered, he had a personality that is willing to put down into research and all but not to the point of being crazed.

A slight problem so far I notice is the usual " class is... more>> deemed to be sh*t but actually a gem " problem, it is actually, to be honest, a bit annoying with that trope. However, it is still within the early stages so I look forward to see the author's decision in whether or not he would choose to develop the trope, which of course, I would rather he not to, although doing it in moderation is fine. <<less

Initially this is quite an enjoyable Monster Tamer novel.

However, the more you read, the more the quality declines - until it drops off a cliff as a substandard translator takes it up. It's mostly generic monster tamer stuff, with the most interesting thing being 'Bbookbbook' the useless big headed turtle who I really like.

Unfortunately the author has no attention span. So many game changing skills just get forgotten, for no reason. For example

Spoiler
    • Early on MC gets a skill that raises potential and allows him to evolve pets. He only uses it on 2 pets total. Such an OP skill wasted
    • He gets a skill that can replace familiar skills with a random one for a cost of 20 potential. Could be game breaking to min max, he only uses it once.
    • MC gets a class that produces OP equipment for his pets. Does a few, and is barely mentioned again
    • MC gets unlimited familiar storing space quite early, and never does anything with it
    • MC doesn't EVER complete his class skills.
    • MC has access to a ranch that will evolve pets automatically. Never uses it
    • MC has up to 25 retainers (NPC servants). Could hire 20+ high level summoners and give them OP pets in very little time. Never does it.
    • MC has a skill that boosts stats by channelling them in his body. Huge boost even at low level. Uses it a couple of times, then never again.
    • Gets a devil fusion skill, similar to Persona or SMT games. Not used.
[collapse]

That's not even all of them. I could keep going.

Another thing that made no sense is that it's established that summoners level up slowly, because exp is split evenly between the Summoner and his pets. Yet when in a party MC still levels up just as fast as others. Based on the rules he should be going up one level to every 5 or 6 of anyone with him.

Truly sub par

The world is even more unrealistic as pretty much every other KN I've read with a game system. Every other KN I've read has systems that are unbalanced one way or another; but this one takes the cake. It'll break your immersion like nothing you've ever read before. It makes xianxia seem like a genre revolving around logic.

A good story can still come out from unrealistic worlds... but I found the writing to be pretty average in every other respect, too, unlike in LMS where things get really s*upid sometimes,... more>> but I still found it fun to read. It might also be because of the difference in my age when I read the two, but eh... who knows?

_____
"First most (as far as I know its ALL) MMO would not let you just change job I mean I've played a few MMO and i've been using priest class never had I chance that I could just suddenly change class without creating new char or rebirth.. So if there's a new job obviously you need to create a new char.. "

**"Once you created a character, through iris recognition, the game was set up so that the same person could not make another character."
This is the issue. Having to delete your maxed out character to create a new one... Having to grind multiple characters is not.

"And speaking of min/max.. All I can say is your a sadist? the MC took about 4 months (i think) to raise his char to lvl 93 and its not even max level and the reincarnation item is even 5.2mil."

**Once upon a time, MapleStory took more than a year to powerlevel to max. Take note, 'powerlevel', not regular levelling... The number of players that hit 200 was probably in the top 0.1% or maybe even less. Most people quit way before that. Yet still, people had multiple characters.

An actual good example of people doing rebirths on a game that takes significant time and cost to 'rebirth' characters is Nodiatis; and many people play multiple characters, too! I didn't use this as my primary example as it's a pretty niche title - not too famous. Look it up if you're interested. The feature I'm referring to is called 'pilgrimage'.

Min/maxing is something people do... Not many people do it to an extreme degree, but you'd be surprised. People even do it for non-competitive single-player offline games.

____
I won't get too much into the various aspects of it, but I believe it's pretty evident that Korean novels that feature gaming or game-like systems typically have their games be quite unrealistic... Why would a company disallow multiple characters? Why would they lock their top-level content behind an amount of grinding that even many gaming addicts cannot reasonably achieve? MMOs are in its current form (mostly reducing grinding character levels and skills; but making top-level content be locked behind gear and technical skill) to its current stage for a reason... unless the author provides a good reason why their fictional game is so successful despite being so different from what we see in reality, I think its a reasonable criticism to say its unrealistic. For people who are very familiar with MMOs, it can break immersion.

They can still make it a good story, sure, but you can't deny the lack of realism...

As for whether the author pulled off a good story... well, to each his own, I guess. <<less

This novel has a lot of potential, but it's wasted on a very idiotic MC.

The MC is said to play the game for money and he does things with this goal in mind. He has to level up fast to catch up with everyone else and start farming gold. He is lucky and gets a special, hidden class. He is also the first to do many things, things that are the talk of the internet. Yet for some weird reason, he decides to hide it all. Now if he played... more>> because he enjoyed playing I wouldn't mind it. However, a money-driven MC doesn't know that interviews, advertis**ent, fame, etc. Would bring him more money and opportunities than being an unknown gold farming loner? Geez. And why is still going to school anyway? Make up your mind on what you want to do, MC.

Also, a game in which you have to reset entirely if you want to try a different class? Each person is only allowed to have one character (iris locked) at a time? Yeah that's how you get people NOT to play your game, buddy. I feel like the author doesn't know how the world operates, and only has a little bit of experience playing Pokemon. <<less

Finally a taming/summoner story, and so far so good, I really hope it will continue that way. I really wanted to find a good one to read since LLS ended up having a piece of sh*t MC and the one with the slime summoner using his slimes as... washing machines...

The fact that it is a VR novel is good too it will help avoiding the annoying slice of life elements of most "reincarnation as a game character" type of stories.

Had potential but somewhere down the lane, the quality of writing and translation just dropped. MC is given so many skills that a lot of the good ones (like talisman making) become forgotten and barely used at all. The 'romance' part of the novel feels redundant when MC spends likes 18-20 hours a day gaming and FL is reduced to a background character with minimal development (appears once in a while and that's about it). I feel that the author tried to introduce so many things in the stories that... more>> he ended up neglecting a lot of aspects. <<less
