The Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

This is the story of a crazy lich who possesses an internal game system and brings catastrophe to the entire world.

“Let’s look at the daily quests today… it’s the damned choose one-of-two-options-type again. Destroy a town with a population of 30,000 people or above; reward: 10,000 evil points. Steal lollipops from 3 children; reward: 1 evil point. If neither of the quests is completed, then 2 points will be deducted.”

“Tsk! You think I’m s*upid? If I really destroyed a town, a crusade of Epic-ranked Holy Knights would definitely come hunting me down. Even if I earned the points, there wouldn’t be any life left in me to spend them. I better just go be a kindly lollipop bandit.”

I’ve already had enough of being a notorious lich. Who says that a lich can’t be a good person? I’m definitely going to beat this damned system and be an upright and dignified good man.

Interesting read. The main character originally just comes off as a mad villain that is making a half hearted effort to be 'good'. However, when you learn his actual role in the city, and the systems he has put into place, you come to understand how he used to be 'good', and he can logically understand 'good'.... but the system and his own bitterness force him into petty villainy.

-Dropped Chapter 335-

-Repeated comedy... first it was funny but with constant repetition of the same jokes but with small difference... it just became annoying

-The MC being the bu*t of every single joke

-The MC doesn't bother restore / improve his magic / soul-imprint / swordmanship / his physical attribute.... which always ends in him getting tr*shed in a fight & then suddenly he will improve or enlighten & level up & wins the fight..

I would love this novel if author didn't try to make everything as joke. After 100 chapters I'm tired with forced joke and all sort weird stuff he insert as joke. I know a novel like this that I stop reading too after author nonstop joke, cultivation chat group.

If you like novel without serious stuff then this novel and cultivation chat group probably your best deal.

But if you like to read novel with serious plot, this is not for you.

Another thing I don't like is the story often disconnected and... more>> I need to read few paragraph to know what exactly this chapter story about. Author often talk about skill explanation for whole chapter and only using it in 1 sentence when MC battle. After first few times repetition I know better to skip those explanation than using my neuron to store the information I wont need again. <<less

The Experimental Diary of a Crazy Lich is the series, I liked the most on novelupdates. And I read far over 70 different works. Instead of a fair review, it will propably be an opinion. Or like a guide, on what to expect.

Why should you, my friend (can I call you that?), read it?
It is unique. It is satire at its core, so you should not read it as your first work, but it has, if you are interested, a great story to tell, with many great and touching... more>> moments. It is quite smart. The story is well thought out, it starts quite far into the story, and it fills the gaps with time. If you are patient and careful in your reading, you will understand why some of the characters behave the way they do.

More importanly... What problems you, my friend, may have on your journey through the novel?
The novel likes to present information in monologues, they have some merit to them, that they are NOT plain infodumps! it gets even worse, they (at least some) are necessary (and you never know which), especially if you do not know and understand the complex power and lore system, the story utilises (you will propably recognise parts of DnD, maybe even more). Even then it might be hard for you, like it was for me. The reason for all this is, that the world is in fact very carefully crafted, and many mechanism need to be explained. The more you understand, the more references you get, the more enjoyable the novel will feel to you, otherwise you will propably feel the novel is too slow. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean it as "If you dont't like this novel, you are s*upid!", but the scale is epic (like what the word trully means, not the weekend stuff, which let us be honest to each other, can never be epic, aside from maybe sieging Troy with your buddies) and a big part of the action is implied, instead of shown. Much of the information interconnects over multiple chapters and even arcs. If you don't invest time, you will propably miss the small, detailed development, and the results may not impress you as much. One of the main questions, which should interest you on your way are: "Why is Roland like this?", "Why is he in this situation?", "What does he wants to do?", "Why like that?". You will get answer to most of the questions in due time, some as late as chapters 250+, and it is just the beginning. I will not spoil you and stay vague.

The second problem you may expect is: characters are over the point. Like, Beifang, lets go beat him up. You will understand why, I mean he is Beifang. But jokes aside, most characters are constructed with much effort, some characters can be even called beautiful (not as beautiful as you, of course ehem... ehem...). The story of Amelia is trully touching, and it is a shame if you can not enjoy it, and it is not the only one there.

The third problem is the writing, you may say it is just too silly. And it is like the first problem we faced. Yes it is silly, yes it is all jokes, but only at the surface. The story is actually quite serious, there are quite horrific scenes, which can drown in the slapstick comedy, if you don't read carefully. It is this apparently dichotomic style, which makes the read for me even more enjoyable.

So at the end, I wish for you to read this novel. You may like it, even if not, it will be too late. And you have to read it till the end, or I will tell your parents and friends about Beifang. Hahahahaha. Ehem. Yes.

Thank you very much for reading. Have an epic weekend! <<less

I loved the beginning of this novel the first 60 chapters have wonderful world building with marvelous characters and tragic and beautiful past. Yet when he leaves the starting city the jokes get so repetitive I want to gouge out my eyes. Almost everyone around him becomes a transvestite, child mol*ster, crossdresser, m*sturbation wizard, necrophiliac or a beastiality enthusiast.

Yet despite having almost no sympathy for the side characters the story of the main character is well fleshed out with wonderful world building and character development. The main characters personal story... more>> is great and shows his development over the years. He is constantly fighting a war that he knows he has no chance to win, but his cynical optimism is what often leads him to his greatest triumphs. The magical omnipotent system that is helping him is far more of a character than in most novels but the snide derisive comments always seem to be a way to ensure to goad the main character into choosing the correct (if not easy) path. The mocking nature of the quests and titles often to spur him into greater deeds, but this humor is often played way too much and leaves me wishing that they developed its character. <<less

I'm a fan of this crazy lich so read it okay!!!!!!!

Well, it is funny. The MC is COOL and his random antics are good in making people laugh. Though there are many exaggerations, this is fantasy so who cares. This story is good.

This book is great. Great story, great world-building, great characters. In short 5/5.

What bothers me however is the excessive use of "gay" humor, by that I mean making fun of homosexuals. By excessive, I mean EXCESSIVE. I've read my share of chinese novels and know that making a joke out of gay people is not rare there and I've come to ignore it. However here it's simply too much. They treat being gay as some kind of curse. There are a lot of gay characters and they are all treated... more>> as freaks of society. On one occasion the MC, when finding about a guy liking little boys, is more outraged about him being homos*xual than a pe*ophile.

I know this may seem exaggerated or that I'm oversensitive, but well, there really is a lot. And it pulls down my evaluation (namely by one star). Though this doesn't mean I'll stop reading. The story is simply that great. I think however that this is a fair disclaimer for people who don't appreciate this kind of humour, if you can even call it that.

A small edit: there are touches of transphobia as well, although not as overwhelming as the h*mophobia. <<less

This novel is such a chore to read. I really tried, but I couldn't see the appeal. Often times the direction of the story is difficult to follow as the setting changes repeatedly, particularly earlier on in the novel. Then there's the humor which may strike many as funny, but when used too much I quickly got tired of it. Everybody's personalities are seemingly skewed, and it's just one big mess. Especially don't like the MC all that much as he fools around too much. Can't take this novel even... more>> the tiniest bit serious. Maybe this novel gets better in the later stages, but if something unable to hook me with the first 100 chapters, then it isn't worth sticking around for. Any further is just a waste of time. <<less

The basic idea is pretty solid, and there's some great parts, but I just can't continue reading it. Not sure if this is the authors first writing or what, but the flow is absolutely terrible. While I understand it's all world building, the constant sidetracking to explain the setting or past history has become beyond irritating. It is literally just interjected throughout anywhere the author feels it might be relevant and breaks events and plot lines. And 9/10 of it is completely unneeded to the point where anything important is... more>> just buried in all the fluff.

Which is sad because I actually like the characters and the plot has some nice zigs and zags even if the author does occasionally lose track of himself or run on "fun" tangents mid event. But this war arc has killed my will to continue. With the characters all over the place and the MC now doing some s*upid singing trying to coax magical ice horses for several chapters now, I'm just done. <<less

Don't listen to a single person who hasn't read past chapter 61. There is a reason why this novel is so highly rated. It's not only interesting, but hilarious. It has it's serious moments and the schemes (because plans just doesn't give it the right depth) are interesting and well thought out. There is a reason why I picked chapter 61 as the final chapter to read if you can't stand the book. I consider it one of the best chapters in a book i've read in a while.

Definitely a good comedy novel with proper plot. It's really interesting and fun to read if you can ignore the info dump and filler that dominated the the whole story.
Yup, 80% consist of info dump, 20% plot = The Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich.

Even so, the author able to create a good laugh from the massive info dump in every chapter. What you need is willpower, maybe you will be able to stay sane, or end up as a crazy Leech.

The first ark that takes place in the underground world is quite good, worth a 4 star rating (though there are some minor plot holes and inconsistencies).

After the end of the first ark, the hero goes to the overworld. At this point, the novel takes a huge dive in quality. It felt like the author didn’t have a specific plan for the story and was just making events up randomly. The MC does have an overarching goal, but he doesn’t seem to have any plan to achieve it, and instead... more>> passively reacts to random events the author throws at him.

There is no direction, plot progression is unbearably slow and further hindered by pointless fillers, and the humor becomes repetitive and stale. In short, the novel becomes boring. <<less

Fun Read for the first half, world building was quite average, lots of characters and lots of nations. More politically detailed than most light novels. Humors are politically incorrect and can be offensive to some LGBT crowd. However it is still on the more juvenile rather than fully discriminatory.

Second half was harder to read, reason being the author seems to pad his word count by repeating explanations every few chapters, this part not so great. Honestly I feel like the novel could have been 100 - 200 chapters shorter without... more>> the padding. I don't know if the author is intentionally being "shameless" like his novel MC.

The ending was not the worst from all the light novels but also isn't that creative.

Overall, fun casual read but not really the best out there. <<less

This novel is one of the very best Chinese web-novels you can find on this site.

So far this is one of the only novels I have read to be worthy of the Beyond SSS+ ranking.

Some things that are good to know when reading this novel:

  • When reading this novel, abandon your common sense, it will be of no use here.
  • The writer makes a joke of any commonly used Fantasy/Web-novel tropes, and when they are used in this novel, they get warped in a way that you wouldn't expect of them.
  • The MC talks in monologues a LOT, and its pretty necessarily to read them since it will be relevant to the plot somehow.
The author has done very well in writing this novel, the writing is of a high quality, the plot is... more>> well thought out.

so far I have seen, the gags for each character actually do develop instead of being stale.

The comedy in this novel is top-notch and yet is also perfectly balanced with action and epic moments. The world-building is excellent and makes you actually wonder about how the world and the plot will develop, the characters are well fleshed out, especially the gentlemen (all of them are weird) The main character (the Crazy Lich) is a absolute expert at shooting himself in the foot, he sees everyone else but himself as weird in some way, but he is the weirdest of them all (Also the way his system trolls him so badly).

There are LOTS of references to other stuff in this novel, try to catch them all if you can, there are often multiple references in a chapter.

The first 60 chapters can be boring for some people to get through since there is no clear goal for those chapters and those chapters are also mainly comedy focused, but beyond that, it improves a LOT, the novel becomes more serious while also keeping its comedy. Some parts of the translation can be annoying to get adjusted to since they are a bit hard to read.

If you are looking for something to read, give this a try. <<less

The finest piece of chinese fusion novel I've ever read on the site. An easy sense of humor that can always lighten up the serious moments yet never cheapen nor dilute it. Okay-ish plot, but somehow are full of surprises and makes you wonder how much times you've spent reading. EPIC character portrayal, the author rarely went out of his way to describe, opting to make full use the long series and building them up by impression to impression. The game elements are realistic and polished. You'd get the sense... more>> that there are mutiple heights when it comes to power and the MC is a 300 yo badass veteran both in his thoughts and conducts. (And how much 300 years of experience shaped him)

The first few chapters might feel weird but give it some time. I guarantee you won't be able to go back to stale jokes where there is a need for obvious punchline after you get a taste of this. <<less

A great and very funny novel to read. The change of pov's quite confusing sometimes but all in all it's one of those novel that you want to read from the beginning to end in one go.
Well Roland is quite the schemer and humorous MC that you will really love let's also add the system that always help (?) him.

Really great novel. During the first few chapters, it seems it's all about comedy but later in the story, get ready for the feels. I would have never thought that this kind of work where it had me laughing so much would also make me feel melancholic at the same time. Despite the silliness and seemingly "evil" side of the MC, he really cares a lot about the people around him. This is definitely a must read.

Story have amazing world build, It one of if not the best one, from a web novel. There are a lot of amazing points.

But I want to talk about the bad point since most people already talk about the good one.

MC actually tell other about his system.

MC always get abuse by potential love interest, and what I hate is that, since it is harem, it include his brother descendant, and she is like 14-16 years old (he and his twin brother is like 300 years old already). And somehow he never hate it when those potential love interest do something that might mess with his plan at all. 2 of the potential love interest got convert into demon because they want enough power to forcefully tie him to them,... more>> and you know what? It harem, so the plot is harem. And the problem is, it isn't the Chinese harem where MC get laid and abandon them, NO, it the Japanese harem type where all girl will try from the start till the end to get MC attention but will never get any because plot require them to be like that till the end. It feel like the girl will always try to do something dangerous just to get MC attention wo never get any, and you even get the childhood friend type, mysterious past love interest type, Loli younger sister type (the descendant), office lady type.

At this point it a Chinese novel, about sword and magic, and Japanese harem plot romance.

We only see little Chinese element in calling friend as brother, and some people pleasing backer the Chinese way.

Sword and Magic is the theme of the story and it did it job very well.

Japanese harem plot romance as I describe.

And another point I hate is that, MC background and MC in the story is like 2 completely different person,

It feel like when you see one of the isekai clickbait story where they show MC background is something interesting but we only get the same old dense harem MC who always said he a bad person, while his action is just "dense harem MC" action.

5 star in background

5 star in side character design

1 star in romance plot

1 star in MC mindset. <<less
