A necromancer as a class, nothing new but that's not important since I'm not reading this to compare it to other novels. I love both Ark and LMS, what's the reason for me not to love this too?

A decent and entertaining read, but the ending was disappointing. To not give too much away, the character development that I was looking for never happened, with most of the foreshadowing never coming to light. Oh, and there was literally no climax. It's like the author suddenly had to pack up and go so he finished the story in one chapter.

Overall, the writing and plot were OK but some deeper themes (e.g. Relationships, personality development, "moral of the story") were missing.

Started off pretty well, ending? COMPLETE AND UTTER BS!

And yes, I've read all the chapters of this series on Munpia, and I feel like it has a very rushed ending.

  1. It was never explained why he traveled back in time
  2. Spoiler

He actually doesn't exact revenge! And is even employed by the Thunder Queen!

    [collapse]

I've seen revenge VR with dark-attribute MC that was better than this.

2/5 increased to 3/5 cuz I'm biased to Korean novels

"An Jaehyun had no use for the history he knew. What he wanted was a new history centered around himself." (wow how noble clap clap)

"If it was impossible, he just had to make it possible!" (which no one could but hey story magicly made it happen)

First line describes the arrogant MC second describes how story handles some problems. If this dosen't sound like you could endure these then don't read this novel. I personnaly loath the MC to death but story is decent if bnot above average, it... more>> has nice translations and has a semi interesting world. 1/5 because I despise the MC. 3/5 without my bias. <<less

there was no big reveal in game, the people who betrayed him never even show up and his original goal to destroy the 30 guilds is never realized. In fact, he ends up partnering up with one at the end of the novel, which pissed me off, though not as much as the fact that NOTHING ever happens with the people who actually betrayed him. You would think, at the least, he would hunt them down and kill them once in the game just to feel better or at least keep an eye on them but they are never mentioned in this reality. And the whole guild thing, this was supposed to be revenge driven, not a lets hold hands with my enemy at the end novel. It negates his entire reason for going back in time, since his main motivation in the early chapters was revenge. I understand the notion of forgive and forget but there was never even a confrontation between them. Very disappointing ending

[collapse]

Up until the 130s it was a 4 for me but now I honestly want to give it a 2, because the ending pissed me off so much. I decided to compromise and give it a 3 after waiting a few months to let my mad calm down a little. Seriously, what is up with all the crappy/rushed endings for Korean novels?! <<less

Now I've read my share of light novels, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, but this was... this was something else.

One of the main reasons I read this despite the mixed reviews was because it was only 190 chapters, which is a pretty short story and the writing couldn't be that bad. After reading 1000 chapters of Martial God Asura I thought I was strong enough to handle bad writing, but God showed me how weak I was through this novel.

I'm not even sure if I want to call this a light... more>> novel just because it doesn't seem too much like a story at all. The character development is completely shot to hell, the setting outside the game is pretty much nonexistent, and the plot is so disgustingly bland that if I swallowed a rotten egg and vomited it back out on my computer it would still give me a better plot. There is no mention of any family or friends, like pretty much the only person outside of the game that's mentioned is some convenience store worker. Well then again, who would want to be this guy's friend? His personality is one dimensional and stubborn, kinda like a guy who adamantly supports racism. The morality of his actions is really dumb as well. It's not that I want to draw a moral line for him, but he draws it himself and it's different every time, but his morals still fall within being a dick.

The premise of the plot is really dumb in and of itself. Going back into time to play a video game? A million of those expensive ass V-Gears could not compare with the miracle of going back in f*cking time. He doesn't even question how it happened, he just goes with it like a prisoner in Plato's allegory of the cave. They don't even give an explanation of how it happened in the end, it's as if time travel was no big deal and we could just forget about it. "Ermagherd, why's this boi so op?" Asks every single f*cking character in the novel. Well, if I traveled back in time and went through kindergarten, I'd be the smartest kid in the f*cking school. If you want to incorporate time travel in your story, at least do it right.

I could definitely go on, but please just don't waste your time on this novel and continue with your day. This book ruined light novels for me. <<less

I really liked this novel in the beginning, however, towards the end it got pretty repetitive. Always repeating how he couldn't afford anything or how horrible his situation is to the point where it gets pretty annoying. It also got a bit boring towards the end and I wish it could have come back to some of the characters he met in the beginning.

However all these things I can deal with, yet the ending is what really ruined it for me ... more>>
Spoiler

The ending was wayyyy to rushed, it does not even go into detail how he ends the game with the last boss, or even how the game "Warlord" ends. The main reveal where he reveals his identity is also cut which I had been looking forward to since the early chapters. I was looking forward to what would happen once he took off his mask and revealed himself but instead of at least one chapter or even a paragraph dedicated to it, it gives absolutely nothing! Furthermore, he does not end up defeating the 30 guilds like he set out to do from chapter 1, instead he ends up partnering with his sworn enemy for the game sequel of Warlord. This leads to another big disappointment, which was the lack of interaction between the protagonist and antagonist. I thought at the very least Hyrkan and Shir would have a battle or at least talk more towards the end but Noooo, none of that happened, leading to an ending that leaves a bitter taste and makes you think that there has to be another chapter or something to tie it all together.

[collapse]
Overall, I found the stories concept interesting and Hyrkans character was strong and intriguing at the beginning. The novel definitely had parts where I could not stop reading or where I would feel bad for the MC. If I had not read the ending I would have definitely given this novel 4-5 stars but because the ending was just so damn bad I'm giving it 3 stars, which I consider to be very generous considering all the time I spent reading this only to get the worst ending I've ever read on one of these novels! <<less

Some people said this novel is worst than LMS, others said they are on par. Some others said it's better than LMS. Everyone have their own opinion. I do too.

I agree with the last group in which ESP is better than LMS. For one, its pacing is faster (LMS is too draggy and too repetitive, the only reason I keep reading until now is because of my desire to finish everything I've started reading). For another, the MC is not put out as the worst guy on Earth. He's not... more>> a good guy but the author at least didn't insist that he is an evil guy. (I still remember LMS's MC kept saying he's evil because he struck first in the Jagolath-something when obviously it's the correct decision to do, not to mention he's the victim in the situation. If he says something along the line of 'don't blame me. You're the one with evil intention' then yeah, I can relate. But then he said 'I attacked you first so I'm evil', like wtf? Is he trying to gain sympathy? Because it only made me angry.)

Back to ESP, I really like the MC. He sticks to his goal, that is to become the best in the game by playing solo. He'll try his hardest to solve his problem in game (related with monsters, of course) and only reach for others if he truly is unable to do so. Even so, he still strictly treats the cooperation as business, no touchy feely, either with a popular guy from the past or his enemies the 30 Great Guilds. In fact, I think he mostly took advantage of the guilds lol.

I enjoy his development in game. I especially love the reaction from the world and the development of his videos. The MC is truly OP but people misunderstood that he was born with silver spoon in his mouth (he's actually dirt poor he needs to eat ramen most of the time).

I'm looking forward for more adventures. I find the game Warlord actually quite interesting with its fixed story line, though I'm not into MMO so I can't tell if it's actually good or not.

Truly recommend it for others to read. <<less

After the VR train wrecks that were LMS and Zhan Long, EoSP comes as a refreshing breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant genre. So far it's fantastic, really looking forward to where the story is going. The MC has a comfortable level of OPness and he hasn't become completely broken yet. The mixture between his past experiences and his present discoveries makes for a good blend that keeps the story interesting without it feeling like the MC is just cherry picking his way through the game. It's also... more>> got a nice level of humor to it that has made for some enjoyable moments. No romance yet, but I hope it comes at some point. It's a decent story, if you ignore its eye-roll-inducing holes and illogicalities. The scope is small—the virtual world's almost entirely limited to sparse descriptions of what the MC experiences, and there's little sense of a greater design outside of his path. On the other hand, the lack of tedious description helps keep the story moving at a good pace. Aside from that, it's entertaining, and decently justifies the MC's choices: basically, he's a dumb guy for the most part, so readers shouldn't expect optimization. 3.5 stars. 4 for the casual... more>> entertainment it provides, 3 for the writing level and effort. <<less

This is it. This is the novel that made me register an account. This is for all you people who rate it 5 stars.

This novel doesn't deserve 5 stars, hell I don't even think it deserves 3. I won't list its pros because you'd probably be sick of the same few talking points if you read other people's reviews. I also don't think that its pros matter when weighed against its egregious sins.

Simply put, this novel has terrible world building and shallow characters in a god-awful game.

... more>> Characters:

I sincerely cannot find any other fleshed-out character aside from MC, which is surprising since whole chapters are dedicated to other POVs. MC also feels one-dimensional and only exists in the game. I don't find any character interesting, including MC.

Game:

I can't believe that there are millions of players paying for a poorly made game: blood sprays out but also monsters melt to ice cream, crafting is just players putting materials on a cube and shaking, the game feels empty (probably due to poor world-building).

World-building (worst sin for any vrrpg/fantasy novel) :

Aside from that nothing is seriously explained in the whole novel. No context on what kind of world the game is set on. Places don't exist until they're immediately relevant to the plot. No basic rundown of available classes, tiers, stats, items and item slots. Nothing about the MC's past or life outside the game. The economy is built like sh*t (I don't think I'll ever be able to elaborate enough on this because theres just so much that's wrong and everything revolves around money) : gold to real money can be converted directly vice versa, cash flow in the novel isn't really realistic/feasible.

Spoiler

Enemies to lovers really obvious from the start. I haven't gotten there yet but I don't think I'll like how it plays happens based on how author writes developments.

[collapse]

In short, I'll be dropping this novel. I really tried to appreciate its charms, and hoped it could be more but it's not. <<less

Overall, this is a fairly engaging novel with an OP MC, interesting game scenarios, and consistent level-ups so the MC isn't suddenly jumping from level 1 to 100. Though the basic plot is quite generic, this story distinguishes itself from the rest of the game reincarnation novels by including a surprising amount of guild politics and alternate perspectives from a wide range of support characters, especially in the mid to latter half of the story. The majority of the fight scenes are well written, and the world-building is incredibly detailed.... more>> It is decently distinct from the overused reincarnation trope that it's worth an extra look.

However, the story contains several major drawbacks. There is very little character development, and what little there is seems forced and inserted merely for the sake of plot progression. Furthermore, the relationships between the characters and the MC are nearly all antagonistic in some way - until the end, the MC has only has a single friend who isn't even mentioned for the majority of the novel. For those looking for romance or even basic bromance, please be forewarned that there is none at all. Certain details also seem to be exaggerated, such as the game economics and the MC's character strength, but for the most part these can be taken as inherently necessary plot devices and tolerated for the sake of the overarching storyline.

The most significant weakness of this novel is inarguably its ending. The author takes a long time to build up what appears to be the final battle, yet abruptly glosses over the major event. The aftermath is delivered in the space of a few paragraphs, and the epilogue seems to perpetuate the MC's problems without offering any real resolution. Much of the underlying subplots are left unfinished, and many supporting characters are simply unmentioned. It feels as if the author cut out what was supposed to be the last 30-40 chapters and replaced it all with a single inadequate summary of events.

The story is not bad, and the plot is reasonably appealing. It is only a few major weaknesses that make what would've been a good novel into one that is simply mediocre. I would only recommend reading this novel in full if you have sufficient time to waste - otherwise, it really isn't worth the disappointment. <<less

Hey,

Honestly, this series is pretty good (solid 7/10).

It's well written (even if the author sometimes goes way too much into detail about grinding and random fights), the pacing is OK (could be a little better, but it's a novel about a VRMMO, so grinding is inevitable) and the MC has some (not much, but some) actual character development!

Most of the support characters don't really get much "screen time", but with a name like Emperor of Solo Play I didn't really expect anything different. Still, what little we see of... more>> them is generally pretty well written (Whistling Pitbull is my personal favorite) and does add to the story.

Having said all that, this story has one large flaw in my opinion - the lack of good antagonists. Throughout the story we get several people/organizations that get built up as antagonists for the MC only to get most of the situations resolved quickly and pretty easily by the protagonist. This is even more evident towards the end of the novel. Honestly, it's not a critical flaw of the story, but it does mean that there's really almost no suspense. From start to finish you don't really worry about the MC succeeding at any point. Having proper antagonists could have given the story a lot more depth because doing quests and grinding does get a little boring at times...

Finally, the biggest problem that most reviewers seemed to have is with the ending.

Spoiler

Honestly, the ending wasn't bad. We had the MC getting over his problems from dying and coming back and his resentment for the people he considers responsible (a lot of reviewers seem to have problems with this for some reason). We also had him getting the acclaim he was looking for. The subtle romance that was hinted at during the novel wasn't really resolved, but I don't agree that it was buried by the author. It's still there if you look for it, just even more subtle (this story was never about romance anyway). The only thing which was unnecessary, in my opinion, is the whole him being poor again thing. I know the author did it to be humorous and continue the whole idea of the MC having no luck with money, but it just felt pointless. Overall, the ending wasn't that great, but it also wasn't the major disappointment most reviewers say it is (at least to me). It doesn't resolve every little thing about the story and I think the author did this on purpose to let readers fill in the blanks the way they want to.

[collapse]

Hope this is useful.

Cheers,

The premise is cool, being betrayed and seeking revenge by dying and coming to the past. He hates the betrayal so this time he does all group activities solo. A swordsman can't do this so he switches classes to something no one has tried before a strength build necromancer.

The main problem this story has, at least for me, is how the author describes the game. The mechanics behind the game dont make sense. If the author wouldn't throw random info dumps that describes a horrible game, and just shows the... more>> characters actions, this is a good story. First, is how the game cost so much money but has 1 million players at the start and in three years it becomes 10 million active players. That sounds small but the game Costs more than $10k per year to play the game, without in game bought items. If you don't buy in game items you'll be a noob. Potions for hp and mp are only decent when bought with cash. Rather than eating a healthy meal the MC chooses Raman so he can chew ingame gum, one time use, to regain mp. The game unit itself is as expensive as a car, and that's for the lowest tier version. If you want to play with the best technology it's like buying a house for the unit. So basically a game for the rich. The game cost so much money each second is important but players can't even stop newb killing or pking to steal items, while the MC levels to like 60 in just a few months and ends up more powerful than those riffraff. Children of millionaires are wasting their parents money to kill steal random pk other rich children. But the game isn't even that good. Well, that's what the author keeps saying. Info dumps like how The battles are so complex and confusing we wonder why we play, so expensive and exhausting but we still play. The author writes that There are other games that us vr and hints that they aren't as expensive or even free to play. Even though the game is so expensive and wasting minutes costs the players dollars, you can't play the whole time. It takes days of walking to get to towns and cities from hunting grounds. Even when you get to hunting grounds you can't hunt anything because of over population. There are to many players killing all the monsters. The author writes about how wasting time costs players hundreds of dollars because of upkeep to play the game but when in the game players are bored watching YouTube videos of other players hunting because all the monsters were killed and hadn't respawned.

Some mechanics are dumb just to make luck more important, and allows the author to show how lucky or unlucky the MC is. To craft items you need to put items in a special craft box, then shake the box with random monster material, makes people want to rage quit when the put it dragon bones and might get tr*sh back. Even the tutorial is so gruesome it makes newbies decide to quit. Lastly, the game that only rich people can play is so popular that the game company limited the number of tv programs that can display the game. There are 20. The 20 guilds are basically tv sponsored guilds with their own channel, but if any other guild becomes better than one of the 20 they tv channel will sponsor the new guild and drop the old. Not like the tv channel can show anything besides these 20 guilds or just random players. For those videos only YouTube will show them, or pay per view internet streaming sites.

The author could have never wrote these descriptions that pop up more often than you want and the story would be perfect.

Actually if the translator left these parts out the game and story would make more sense and be more interesting. <<less

Spoiler

Like in the beginning he spends a lottt of money on a Necromancer guide... when all that he learns is "One can teach the AI's"... such common knowledge lol. Almost gave up reading the novel after that, haha.

[collapse]

It gets better after the first few chapters in my opinion. In a nutshell, it's a relaxing, chill, comedic version of a "virtual reality game reincarnation revenge" type of setting.

The main character doesn't always make the right choices, in fact he makes the wrong choice almost all of the time, but this is explained by one simple fact (that he himself knows) -- he isn't the brightest of apples. This being the case, he easily gives in to all of his desires: excessively testing his luck with RNG, being pennywise pound foolish, not saving up money in the real world, etc. He seems to embody some of the worst traits... but at the same time this is something many can relate to just a little bit inside.

Some may find it painful that the MC takes such s*upid paths after reincarnation, but that is how he is meant to be, a dumb character. For me, most of the LN on here have the main character portrayed as smart and cunning so this is a nice change of pace. The question now is-- How far will he go, with this great handicap, his s*upidity? <<less

I was compelled to write a review because most of the people reviewing this novel are teenagers who just want the same concoction in every novel they read. When they do not find it, they come out blaming the novel and spam it with 2-3 stars.

So here's my review, from someone who has read 500+ novels

First off, This is not an MMORPG story. This is a story of a person going to fight his own demons, and the setting happens to be in an MMORPG.
What I am trying to... more>> imply here is that all the criticism about the game mechanics and what not are kind of irrelevant. This novel does not spam the character profile with xyz numbers and abc skills after every level and at least 3 times a chapter. No, it does not do that, and it seems to kind of piss off some readers. I, for one, was glad, I did not have to worry about scrolling over character window.

That being said, The novel is named "EMPEROR OF SOLO PLAY", so why are people expecting teams, romance, etc from this novel? It is not trying to be something it is not. It is brutally honest with what it is going to be, a journey of a guy who went back in time.

Secondly, regarding the ending,
Spoiler

No, he did not join the guild in this game. And, what he did was his character growth. In his first life, he died like a dog on the street. This time around, he joined them on his own terms, coming to terms with the fact that his life got boring after he became the best. It was his happy ending, finding what he wanted.

[collapse]

Finally, don't go in expecting a revolutionary plot. Despite me praising the novel, there are some obvious loops here and there, but the novel remains enjoyable and keeps you on the edge of the seat. 190 chapters means that there are no fillers and the story moves at a stead pace until its end.

The novel is a solid 4/5. It is a healing novel of sorts. A betrayed man finds peace in his life, he learns to forgive, move forward and accept himself for who he is. He learns about life, makes friends and heals. <<less

Overall I really liked reading this. The MC is understandable enough and has a nice personality. He doesn't absolutely hate anyone and everything but just wants to beat the people on top that dragged him down because he was a threat.

I particularly like that his guild never actually appears in his second chance since that would feel forced thinking about it.

with them being ridiculously poor and basically relying on the MC when they started

[collapse]

The ending is also surprisingly good for a Korean novel and consolidated the fact that I like the MC with how

Spoiler

He isn't going crazy with revenge. He just has high pride and wants to be known to be on top. Once he does that he is willing to be with his enemy. Kind of wanted to know what happened afterwards since Shir was obsessive. Also hilarious that the "impossible Ai" uses the mc's skeletons as a base.

Some people may say its horrible since he basically gave himself over. But

  1. It is made clear he solos the final boss and is well known to be one of the best players outshining the 30 guilds and basically fulfilling his goals
  2. MC is still poor and horrible at taxes (?) so he needs income and wouldn't have anything to do. He knew he was going to quit Warlord and leave everything behind -revenge included.

I really enjoyed tthe novel, how the MC became a Fighter Necromancer to compensate for the Solo Play and how it really worked due to the System amazing AI, every fight was well described and how his fan base increases over time so he get more funds to keep geting stronger and really threat the top powers is well developed, but in the end, don't know exactly why, but the Author rushed too much to end the novel and gave, in my opinion, a crude ending with a saltless final... more>> battle without atleast any personal development in the real world to give the MC a better after life after all his hard work. So it's more or less the following:

Novel until before the last arc: 5 Stars

Novel during it: 2 Stars

The average I'll keep at 4 Stars since it was really just the end that was this bad, like 5 chapters, and because I hope that if there's a new novel continuing this story it'll develop beyond the game since he gave room for a next game with team play xD <<less
