In a distant future, the empires of mankind span the galaxy, and glorious Earth has devolved into a peripheral backwater.

In Shanjing city in the Asian region, Wang Zheng’s dreams of becoming a mech pilot are crushed when his college entrance exam genetic score turns out a pathetic twenty eight, barely above an animal.

To make things worse, people get the impression he attempted su*cide after being rejected by the campus beauty.

Then the closest thing to a family he has, the old man in the book store across the road, goes missing, leaving him only a mysterious birthday present.

4.5 Excellent novel so far. I don't know why people said it's a slow start; he's kicking ass and taking names a few chapters in. There are only a few annoying tropes occasionally, like random people praising MC post fight, or talking down to him just before he overturns their expectations + reactions. Only -.5 since it's much shorter than other novels, and it's not repeated several times in a row as per usual.

Also,
Spoiler

it's a little unbelievable how he deliberately sandbags all of his test scores throughout his education just on the words of a guy who feeds him. Obviously it is just a poor attempt full of plot holes by the author, so that the MC can later reveal his glory and surprise everyone.

[collapse]

But it's a minor plot hole that can be easily overlooked in an otherwise great Gary Stu webnovel. Excellent translation quality as well, I just wish it was a little more speedy. :)

This story is perfect for people who love mecha but prefer slice-of-life over war. The tags are extremely misleading: As of current volume there is no adventure and the "romance" more the typical chinese "beauties love heroes" type of thing. The martial arts, sci-fi, and xuanhuan elements are there, but there's not much focus on any of them - the majority of actual fighting and sci-fi exposition is in a game which could be made with current technology.

As of the latest translated chapter, there doesn't seem to be much conflict... more>> for the main character. He's basically able to do what he wants (despite his complaints otherwise), he can take his pick of the women he meets, he doesn't really have money problems... Well, he has to get stronger within a certain period of time or he'll be killed, but it doesn't seem to affect him since he never seemed to have an interest in anything other than getting stronger anyway.

Oh yeah, and the main character is typical "tr*sh" who gets a powerup and a teacher and becomes OP, but still gets called a tr*sh, etc. The comedic elements are mostly "There's no way he can win." *wins easily* "HE WON!" *laugh track*

Despite the main character being somewhat "perfect" the side characters are somewhat endearing, and it doesn't have the s*upid evil villains of most CNs: the game is actually treated as a game, and even when people treat him like tr*sh because of his gene score, they can accept their losses without automatically becoming his servants. <<less

The novel is an intriguing mix of school life, online games, technology mixed with a few xianxia elements like cultivation methods. The protagonist is cool headed and not swayed easily by insults etc. The writing is well paced and the translation is well done. Definitely worth a read!

Every positive point i'll list is only in comparation with other chinese novels:
1. Side characters are continuously developing, which is quite rare for chinese novels. Side stories are not bad as well.
2. The world - quite interesting system, with different political powers, quite organical.
3. General story developmens is not too chaotic as well, even every tournament arc has it's own sense and goal for MC.
4. MC - has quite likable character. Pretty realistic 16 years old guy personality.

Now goes what made me drop this novel:
1.... more>> VR world which became the biggest "secret weapon" for all powerhouses out of nowhere and was forgotten in 200 chapters.
2. MC as a person is developing much slower than his friends.
3. General MC character is so bizzare for me:
Spoiler

- Princess confessed to me. My country sold me to her empire. Her aunt with Lier organized assasination. I suffered but survived.
* Let's forget about it, my country is still good, her aunt is just caring about her empire, and Lier is just too week for me to care...
- Her aunt threatened my family (closest friends). I told her to f*ck off and decided to broke all relationships with their empire. Her daughter, my lover's sister (knowing all of this) says "sorry".
* "Ah, nevermind, don't care. It's not a problem that your mother tried to kill me, we'r friends again"

[collapse]
4. "there's a difference" moments:
Spoiler

1:
- My company (friend, friend's business, whatever) is not influental.
* "Everyone neglects or even betrays us. We don't need people like this as a friend, when we'r great again we'll ignore them"

2:
- My country (which I briught a lot of wame and benefits to) literally sold me, tried to ruin my future.
* "Ah, nevermind, there's a general who tried to speak fo me, so i'll forget the whole system"
- I was neglected by belittled by my lover's family
* I will do my best to receive their recognition.

[collapse]
5. No changes in the way MC solves his problems, even after he expirienced a whole load of shit
Spoiler

- Because of Aslan bit*h I was assasinated in a spaceship. It's a miracle that I survived.
- Because of the Aslan as*hole I got trappen in Abyss. IF not for my luck I would be dead.
- Aslan organized massacre on one of my planets, almost killed my best friend's wife, killed my helper.
- Aslan bit*h placed me as a target of hunt for all the competitors (arc I dropped reading).
- Aslan as*hole attacked you trying to kill you (announced it) in a 4vs1 battle.

* "Ah, you'r from Aslan? I'm friends with a princess, so I won't kill you"

[collapse]

3-5 could be fine if we speak about some 16 years teen who knows nothing about the world. But one moment. We'r speaking about SUPERSOLDIER AND EMPEROR! A person who must revive an Empire. Really?!
No wonder this empire is dead now with emperors like this) <<less

This can potentially be fun if you turn your brain off, but frankly, it's below average on everything.

The characters are interesting but the dialogue is too random and how everyone gets together and builds friendship feels forced instead of a natural progression.

When it comes to science it feels like the author is just throwing words together and trying to make it sound it authentic, it ends up taking away from the enjoyment of the novel.

The same thing happens with the combat. The game the main character likes to play has... more>> no base or foundation, the author tries to describe ranks and how rare and hard it is to reach the top ranks, but then throws all of that out of the window and suddenly there are experts everywhere.

He tries to paint every new battle as a step up from the previous one and starts throwing named techniques one after the other, also painting each one as a heaven-defying ability.

IF you can ignore all of that you might get a chuckle sometimes out of the novel, but I would only recommend this as a time waster when you absolutely don't have anything else to read. <<less

This is like a never ending pat on the back. The main character is so strong that he never has to struggle or fail at anything. It’s so boring. There’s no suspense or challenging journey, where the hero grows through overcoming adversity. The hero just wins.

Finished reading the whole thing and it was ok. It main story is not bad if you don't think too hard about it (way too many plot holes) but one thing that kills it for me it is drag. Oh man does the novel drag like no tomorrow at times.

This is big problem with the author's other novels, like so MC is part of a team in this competition. Most people author would drag out the fights the MC's team is in. Well this author will drag out the fights of EVEYRONE ELSE first so be prepared to read a lot of sh*t you don't remotely give a f*ck about and will be completely inconsequential.

Also there a lot of build up for stuff that get resolved in really anti climatic ways that make you wonder wtf is point of all this build up. Especially the ending like my god. When I reached the last 10 chapters I was like is there a sequel because there is no way this can end in 10 chapters with the current situation. Yet it does and while its not bad (my god CD ending still haunts me) but my god was it the most anti climatic thing ever. So much hype and mysterious that just goes meh its over.

Lot of repeating plots but few very good plot twist. Actually one of the big twist toward the end I thought was really really cool and could have went in some awesome direction but of course totally wasted by the direction author went.

Overall enjoyable mindless read. Don't expect too much.

For 12 chapters, the story has caught my interest. The MC did not quickly gained some OP item, skill, etc., he actually trained for two years (two days regular time), included with possible hidden potential. So far the story has focused on world, and character building, with comedy. There has been action, proving that the novel has a lot of potential. There is kind of a foreshadowing between the MC and his two friends that might accomplish a lot in the future. I already like the MC and his best... more>> brother, and the other brother seems cool but not much focused on him, yet.
Unfortunately, it seems it will not be picked up until May.

Update:I have been waiting for MC to pilot a real mech, but he has not. He has become strong to be able to play virtual mech battles, they were cool at first, but not anymore. I taught he joined the academy to become a real pilot, not a virtual pilot. Maybe a lot later in the story it may happen, but I am unable to contine reading because the story is not as entertaining as before. <<less

So far so good, The story seems quite a unique blending traditional xia-xia cultivation with all trappings of a sci-fi hit. It so far fondly reminds me of the underdog scenario of the books “Enders game” or “Ready Player One”; a kid looked down on society for being tr*sh going into virtual spaces and training to the point of machine perfection.

Not to mention, Rebel scientists, genetic testing replaces IQ scores, time-locked training where 2 years= 2 days, Epic VR Mecha combat, and saving a damsel from assassins.

And that’s just... more>> what I’ve seen in the teaser chapter parts Bagelson (Blue Silver Translations) has graciously teased us readers with. I’m hoping this plot will keep steering into an interesting course~ <<less

Fun read for the first couple hundred of chapters then it just devolves into endless academy and battle tournament arcs

Just like skeleton’s other works, it’s just a blue balls fest.

very wasted potential with the world building and plot line.

Don't try to read this guys its quite a pitfall novel its just a repetition of tempest of the battlefield heck the title of this novel should be tempest of "stellar school competition" at the first 400 chapters is quite an exciting part later on you will realized that the author just repeat it again but with a small tweak. The only good side of this novel is the MC is quite smart as well as decisive. The romance part is your typical princess-commoner love story quite a common scene.... more>> If you really want an exciting sci-fi wuxia/xianxia novel better read forty millennium of cultivation. <<less

Spoiler

Randomly saves a girl running and pays for her food despite being broke himself for no good reason. Also takes her home for some reason????????

He is promised to be able to enter Mech class as well as the Physics class. But when he goes to register for the Mech class, apparently his name is not on the list. No academy does things like that. No things don't work like that, even if a professor "likes him" or so

Training for 2 years in that time chamber actually let him be above all those players that hit high ranked apparently. No it doesn't make sense. Yeah he'll be good but it's not like these people did nothing in real life and are all young like him.

Already disappointed by the first 20 chapters. Definitely not going to stay around to look any further. <<less

2/5 star rating

World building is interesting, but there are still too many plot holes. This is quite expected since the novel is quite long, so many characters, and twists. Scientific jargons are not that important for me since its only "fiction."

The main reason for my low rating is because of the romantic plot/subplot. The MC is very s*upid in terms of romance. His dealings with his other female "harem" are really dog sh*t. I just don't really like how he treats his other female "harem."

The harem tagged should not be... more>> included since the MC still got together with only "one" female. I also don't like their pairing, there is 0 character development between the MC and female lead. <<less

Evaluating this novel:

Chapter 31,

The plot is good atm, decent progression. But I'm thinking the MC is a bit childish? I can't think he's in his 20's+ where he thinks everything he wants is a must ex. How he fcking hates to study physics?

... more>> And also how the fvck is he easy to decieve in a moment like the principal saying he is a god damn 'hidden weapon' HAHA

•c53

The pacing is still good, even though the story throws those mumbo jumbo physics which I don't understand it still makes me want to continue reading.

So far I can't see MC noticing that he was LIKED by someone by 4 years and how the MMA girl has sprouted feelings for him... <<less

(Warning some Spoliers)

This is one of those novels which have a really strong start but then just goes no where and it also has so many filler chapters crammed into the story that after a few 100 or so chapters you start to see a pattern.

The MC himself at the start was very intersting the Author decided to make the character low-key, Very weak at the start, Looked down upon and underestimated. Now that is good for the first 200 or so chapters but then the author doesnt... more>> change this sure he makes the MC grow more powerful but he still has the same traits as the story develops.

Another annoying thing is this is called tempest of the stellar war. Great title for any novel but where is the war? From where I have read up to there isnt any Just schools fight, Millitary training, Cultivation and romance rolled into it.

In conclusion if you want to read a novel with an MC that grows alongside the story read something else. Also this is one of those story that desperatly need a time skip of say 15 years to freshen things up just changing the location which this story does alot of by the way doesnt do this. <<less

I am actually entertained.

So contrary to some negative reviews. Keep these points in mind. Before you decide on reading or not.

  1. Mecha tech is cool. It kind of makes sense. Because science fiction.
  2. The science is on par with Star Trek or Star Wars mumbo jumbo. Sounds good on print. BECAUSE its fiction. (keep in mind this is science FICTION, not science FACT.) In the end we all love / hate Star Trek / Star Wars because it all SOUNDS cool and the special PEW PEW PEW.... zooowwwweeee (R2 D2) sounds. And oh yeah, Jedi powers are sweet.
  3. There will be a harem. kind of. you will see. But a well tailored one.
  4. Powers. Yes, it seems like it's wuxia, or xianxia, but honestly, it's more like superpowers. Our MC is maybe on par with Captain America level abilities. Ok, maybe more the baby of Tony Stark/Iron Man was blended with the baby of Captain America = Brawns + Brains. So if you like powers + mecha. This may be for you.
  5. Character really doesn't start off OP, he builds up to it. Which is always nice. Nothing like a learning curve to show the power level creep.
  6. Mecha battles are always nice. Translators did a swell job showing those scenes. Which is a reflection of the writer as well. So if you good mecha battles. You will like this.
In the end, it's up to you if those points are good enough to start reading. I'd wish someone had told me about some of these points. I might have read it earlier. Now I anxiously await the next chapter. To go where no one has gone before! To infinity and beyond!!

If you liked Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, you'll really like this. This MC is similar yet different to Tatsuya, lol.

Have a read. Perfect MC in study and combat skills while being in a peaceful school setting and enjoying daily student life, also occasionally plays VR games to satisfy his Mech nerd before he pilot the real thing,

All these in a few volumes... until the "Fire Nation" attacked. (unknown threat, but is foreshadowed)

It got funny moments, serious moment, simple but cool battle moments and decent romance (no... more>> harem, just a MC who got his heart set to one female lead). Good read if you want to just enjoy a laid back story but has a late game plot in plan for the readers. Like Mahouka really, can't find a better similarity.
Spoiler

It's all enjoyable school stuff till some terrorist decided to blow stuff up.

[collapse]

On to some of the cons

Spoiler

Perfect MC, duh. If you don't like it... toooooo bad. It's here.

Not too much of a 'show', more 'tell'. At least, it's enjoyable if you don't think or care too much about details. It's the imagined future. So the topics are more of THEORIES instead of FACTS that is the norm in 2017. Gundam stuff.

Slightly messy relationships. Well for the moment anyways. He aims for one but that's quite a problem cause she's a... princessssss. Yep, it's that Gundam like plot. And then there's 2 more side female char that wants the MC.

[collapse]

Anyways. This is a perfect fix to read as a substitute for Mahouka, Knight n Magic, etc if you want another like it.

Also for future plot story after all the school stuff if you want to spoil yourself (and for me to remind myself)

Spoiler

MC is meant to be a god of war at first by the (AI) Bonehead in the Rubik Cube. The AI belong from another place/empire/not Earth, but detects that its empire is attacked. So that plan changed to training the MC to become a King of a new nation and rebuild the AI'S nation. The AI is still in planning phase, MC is still in training phase.

Ho. I hope this turns out to be a better version of Aldnoah Zero. We will see.

This is entertaining, but not that inspired. The best part of sci if is the world building. I'm still waiting for some decent world building, but so far this series has not delivered.

The main question that I hope will be answered satisfactory is the following:
Why does this society have such a large focus on their military? Based on the current setting it seems things are mostly peaceful. Humans aren't really at war with each other since the whole Milky Way seems to be in alliance. The extreme focus on... more>> military matters seems to imply at ongoing large scale warfare, but all of the characters seem to be too carefree for that.

The main character also seems a bit too Mary sueish. His only weakness seems to be that the world is incapable of measuring him effectively. Other than that, he is literally flawless. This feels pretty boring.

I think the main reason I read through this is because I hoped that world building would happen soon. So far, this seems more like modern world with mechs and the story is pretty generic.

I would honestly just read To The Stars instead. <<less

This is a story of a Mary Sue main character, he's basically Shiba Tatsuya from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei but with a personality.

The plot is good, but I love the worldbuilding more, so I wished the author would end the whole school theme thing and make the MC experience the outside world. So far that's why I can't rate this high, I hate school themes.

It's entertaining, but ultimately frustrating; I stopped reading about 80% through.

The good things include (generally) good characters, even the females and villains have some depths.

Interesting political complexity.

... more>> The things that were a challenge:

1) A lot of the book is takes with video games and school challenges. While exciting, it's hard to relate as to how they matter in "real life".

2) Combination of cultivation and personal combat (including with swords, etc.) is really hard to merge with SF-level worldbuilding. Mecha do not really make viable threats in a modern warfare environment, and far less in the theoretical far future. The author's scientific background seems weak, so world-building in general is weak.

3) The author switches viewpoints a lot, showing various characters rather than MC. Some of it adds complexity to the world, but it is disappointing in a cultivation novel -- I expected to read how the MC deals with challenges and grows, not how the rest of the universes behaves. Also, there is a main adversary, who is an interesting character, but we spend far too much time on him. Not quite a c*ckroach, but he tries to stab MC in the back multiple times and continues to survive until the very end (I skimmed ahead).

4) In fact, MC's cultivation/growth is very slow, most characters in the beginning are still with him in the end. On one hand, it's good not to discard interesting side characters, but on the other, it sort if devalues the MC.

5) "Harem" -- there are a lot of well-drawn interesting women attracted to the MC, but he is stuck on his first crush. That's okay, but instead of either forming some sort of poly relationship (harem) or making a clean break, they are kept lingering and hoping for thousands of pages. After a while, I keep thinking "fish or cut bait!" To be clear, there is no harem.

Overall, entertaining but ultimately frustrating. <<less
