Boring, and slightly disappointing. The premise of the story, that the main character is a reincarnated martial arts expert in the body of an ordinary teenager, is fine - but after 70 chapters, the author has yet to do anything interesting with it. The main problem with the story is that the main character lacks any kind of agency - everything that happens to him, happens because of a string of implausible coincidences rather than as a result of any decisions on the protagonist's part. Similarly, there's very little conflict... more>> in the story; confusingly so, as there are several good opportunities for both internal and external conflict that are apparently passed up. If the author had put more pressure on the MC by having people from his past life come back to haunt the new character, or by giving the MC an uncompleted task from his past life that he felt compelled to carry out, or even by having the MC be dedicated to a normal, peaceful life and having that life be disrupted by the aforementioned ridiculous circumstances, it would have given this story a feeling of plot or direction that it currently lacks. Instead the story winds up reading like "The saga of self-insert-man, whose poorly defined abilities allow him to make a variety of attractive women emotionally dependent upon him!"

Aside from the structural problems with the story, the author also has the obnoxious tendency to skip over periods of time without any warning, resulting in a disjointed and cumbersome narrative. Definitely a series worth skipping. <<less

The story has no real conflict, there's nothing to drive the plot - MC has more money than he can spend in multiple lifetimes, he is unrivaled in martial arts, he has so outgrown everyone else there is zero chance of him being romantically involved with anyone, he envies no one, he has no rivals - and he has no real goals. As a result, all the conflicts feel forced and pulled out of thin air.

Awakening is an entertaining read as of c42.

If I were to hold something against the story at this point it would be two things. The characters aren't amazing so far, they are decently executed but fairly flat despite clearly having their own backstories. It remains to be seen if the author will do anything interesting with them or if they do whether what they do will be worth reading. Aside from that there are times when I go to read the chapter and have to check on the previous one... more>> because I'm not positive I'm reading the same story. I guess I would call that jarring or poor transitions. <<less

Impressions as of ch.30.

It tells the story of a martial artist who had reincarnated/transmigrated multiple times, this time into the body of a bullied Japanese student. What makes the story interesting is that the MC retained the contacts of his previous life, who are now of course older since the last time they met. Instead of the usual "I discovered a treasure with an immortal inside that teaches me", in this story the MC himself is the teacher and his previous students are now major players in the criminal underworld.

In... more>> the 30 chapters thus far the story is more about the everyday life of the MC as he blends into his new Japanese family and school.

Each chapter is relatively short, the text and the dialogue are relatively simple and to the point with little characterization. As another reviewer noted, the story reads more like a narration. It's like someone read a manga that is drawn with huge panels (eg: Bleach) and tries to convert it into text format, ending up with short descriptions as there are too little details to expand on. Not that it's a bad thing, as the story proceeds quickly without the boring details and yet still interesting enough. Though the pacing might be awkward at times (one character suddenly went away all of a sudden without any notice after some relationship build-up).

Good enough for me to read more. <<less

Review up to chap 27~

This... I really don’t know what to say... is this chinese or japanese? Probably chinese since it’s from qidian, but as you indulge in the story for a while, you’ll probably confused if this one chinese or jap novel...

The MC is likeable, he already lives when the Song dinasty founded, and it’s different from our usual xianxia, and this story doesn’t contain fantasy thing like godlike item, cultivation method, or magic thing like, just a normal person who transmigrated to another dead body (no reincarnation... more>> here, the reincarnation tag is a lie) He deal with his problem swiftly and fast without making the problem that revolve around the MC bigger, a smart and wise type...

Also, this is like a japanese novel, where he spend a time in the high school with a bit of slice of life, what a nice change...

Also, this story have a fast paced plot (in a nice way), the narrative is really different from usual chinese narrative where it is a bit descriptive when describing of something like object, skill, environment, beauty, etc or japanese narrative where the story sometime describe in 1st pov, this one look like a western narrative, it goes to the point without beating around the bush or needing to describe much about something, just let our imagination roam freely (and this one is plus to me)

The story only have 2-3k word per chapter, so you don’t have to spend some times to read this one to understand of what is happening and why it happen since the problem fits around the chapter, no useless word here

The character is interesting, they have their own problem, not just a flat side character where they want MC to help them or making a ruckus with him...

And lastly my rating : 5/5, so if you like something like martial art in modern day (like GSI), please give it a try <<less

It's a pretty decent modern day novel. I like the MC personality and the slice of life kinda feel in the story. Plot does move a little slow and most is about his daily life but the story is still enjoyable. Compare to all the modern day novels I read so far, this one at least is decent. It doesn't have too much cliche settings like the others and horrible tr*sh mobs. At least in this one MC take care of things without dragging it out or make any s*upid... more>> mistakes. It had a few intense moment and I think author wanted to make it into a action novel, but somewhere along the way the MC starting to take it easy and enjoy life. Only problem is the author kinda rush it with the ending and it feel to me there is still so much unanswered and stuff left to explored.

Trust me, while this is not a awesome or great novel full of action, it is at least a hundred times better than all the modern day novels that has been translated so far concerning reincarnation and MC having a second change in life. Also not like all those who suddenly had a weird system giving them power, but this one at least has decent fighting styles and having great power also bring side effects. <<less

I can't honestly say I hate it, which is why I gave it a 2. I at least didn't drop it with the first few chapters, no matter how odd it read. I thought I was reading summaries at first, not the full chapters.

in this book, it's as if every girl is to be protected by the MC, and every guy is his enemy. This is all well and good, but when he sees a transfer student getting bullied and decided to do nothing, my feelings changed. ... more>>
Spoiler

he only turned back because one of the bullies called the kid a Chinese pig, though he's blond, so the guy turned around and beat them up, then threatened the kid because he didn't try to fight back. much like the body he's currently using. This is not okay with me.

[collapse]

It's okay for a woman to cower behind him, and there are a LOT of them, ranging from old to even a little girl, but not another guy getting ganged up on? so if the poor kid tried to fight back and got beaten up worse for it, it would have been okay?

Just... no. There's more, but this was the biggest thing for me. <<less

Actually better than a lot of high ranked chinese novels, at least it doesnt have the standard plot of:

-enter a sect/new area, get stronger, find new genius to defeat, defeat great mastermind.

-rinse and repeat at a different location, usually a higher plane.

Althought there are a lot of cliches, most are bearable. The only reason this is not 5 stars is because the ocasional japanese racism, but since he usually gives a historical explanation (that most of the time I didnt know) I cant let it pass.

Though the translation isn't great, overall it's well paced and a great read for those who like this genre. Similar to My wife is a beautiful CEO,..

Can be rated a 4.5 if not for the fact that the storyline becomes mangled around ch200 and slightly broken..

Just my kind of thing. No harem tag there. I like this kind of plot, where the MC is OP from the start but not flirty, harem-seeking despite the author made the MC not like that, and stay true to his principles.

Well the rating is not that high, I can sort understand that, well for me it is still worth your everything to read it.

Was just finished reading this till the last chapter (227 right now)

I'd said, it is not that bad as other would said,

It has a great potential, with the main character keeps his cool tho females just flocking at him (I like how he keeps being loyal to his girlfriend). It was almost a harem but fortunately this is not your mainstream novel

alas, I got the gist of the plot that a case will show up - then he tried to solve it - solution of the case -... more>> normal living again - case again and keeps repeating that

Hope that Desolate will translate this till the last <<less

I honestly don't see what's so good about this novel to warrant 4 stars. Granted I've only read 21 chapters so it could get better but so far we have an old man taking over the body of a dislikable teen and easily solving all problems that pop up. It got old fast and and I found myself falling asleep. Plus the girl who was being built up as a love interest just up and left for no reason and instantly replaced like she was a mistake the author wanted... more>> to replace and forget. As if it's that easy. For the most part I found this boring and lacking in depth both in character and story. Even finding out about the sister seemed lackluster and more like a small side project than actual development for the sister <<less

I just can't keep reading it anymore. The story kinda jumps here and there with no strong plot, as if the author simply writes what ever pops up in his mind.

The story doesn't really evolves in MC's abilities, I mean how he grow his character and such instead he is just OP, doing mind boggling stuffs in modern day. I know its under FANTASY, SUPERNATURAL category but at least try to make the story more consistent. Maybe some readers would find this kind of LN enjoyable/likable but to me its... more>> rather bullsh*t to cope with. <<less

At the start I feel like this is a very interesting wuxia novel. However, later in the story, on the part where the fur monster came to light the first thing came into my mind is that 'oh right, the author can't think of anything to add to the novel so he just dumped info from the internet and add a beast which is on a totally different world from this novel's type'. Imagine, you are reading a martial artist in the modern era, yes it is interesting, reincarnation and... more>> stuff. But later on it became a really out of this world fantasy mixed in the modern era with a reincarnated martial artist from decades ago. It will make you go 'WOW wtf is this?' Adding a policewoman character in the middle of the story just to make an arc is somewhat annoying, adding the fact that her conversation with other people is too bland and her personal life's story is boring. <<less

I love this story so far as of chapter 166. Everyone has different taste, my just happen to be an OP MC who can do almost whatever he want because he can handle all the consequences of his actions. The romance is one of the best (in my opinion) that I have read so far and I have read a lot. Although I don't really like the Slice of Life genre, the story is progressing steadily with positive results (there are times in the story so far that could have... more>> ended in a tragedy but the MC always handled it perfectly). Overall this is a story that I am waiting to read everyday. <<less

Slice-of-life at first but then on actions more and more. In fact, even early on, during the slice-of-life moments, hidden between them is plots and actions.

The MC is Baddass. While it's true that it skipped scenes and don't explain much during those times, but when you read it, it doesn't feel too bad and it's still tolerable.

The plots involve the MC later on are really good. The fun fact is that the MC wanted to have a normal life in this rebirth but those plots keep come across him, either... more>> by coincidences or fates.

I thought that it would be bad from other reviews but when you read it, you won't be disappointed. Although, in here the translator didn't put who talking in bracket but you still can easily figure it out who. If you can past the skipping scenes and behind-the-plot scenes then this novel won't disappointed you. And even if you don't want slice-of-life then this is Xianxia, slice-of-life in this novel is still just secondary. Though you won't get those cultivation methods or God-like power since this is set in modern times, but more like Surpreme Martial Artist MC with Badassery skills/abilities. <<less

The start was great but somewhere along the line the novel fell flat because I feel no tension and worry for the MC. He's so overpowered and every time a villain or problem pops up you just know it's going to be solved in a couple chapters. Awakening is good for a light read. I'd recommend reading the first good part of the series and then eventually stop when you get bored.

The story is not bad but its a huge mess. After each Arc it feels like I'm reading a different Novel all the time. The Author is very confusing and he is not clear with us (The Reader).
Its like the Author feels like he has to have a purpose for every Character! And it just drags a lot of stalling. There's no plot.

-The Main Character talks like an old man
-He had a sudden power up so fast wtf >.>
The Romance is... more>> just terrible. Just when I thought the annoying Teacher was gone for good she "conveniently" comes back. I have no idea how she's the Main Girl in the story! She's brainless and a boring character who would obey the MC every word.
Rumi has had the most scenes and a lot of moe! So why couldn't she be the main heroine?! Its all F'd up man. Character with the most potential. While the Teacher is gone most the series!
Spoiler

The only good heroines are Rumi and the Teacher little sister.. Both have had the most scenes and very interesting Arcs. However later they become so obsessed with the MC that they just feel plain. Fyi they don't stop loving him even when they got rejected.

Also when the MC mourns for his dead wife "Suddenly" he meets a little girl who he helps for no reason but easy to predict that she's the Reincarnation of his dead wife! See?! The Author feels like he has to have a reason for anything. I hate that. Make up your dam mind. Lol.

[collapse]

Don't get me wrong. The ideas the Author comes up with are very good. But there's no right Balance in the story. Alas I can only be disappointed in the Author. The story is like scrambled eggs!

Spoiler

I do love the fact that he has a powerful background so not even the rich people can mess with him. I also like how he is calm. But things are also very exaggerated.

[collapse]

Read this only if you want to read small Adventures. Because that's all the MC does. Goes on small adventures every arc. Its fun but it would feel like reading a complete different story again and again. <<less

This is actually good IMO. It all boils down to if you like the MC or not, because the setting and story is somehow generic and there ain't really a connection between the events that happen through the novel, they use "convenient" plot devices to move on the story (kidnapping, offending young masters, h**ny psychos and some more kidnapping).

But overall I quite enjoy the story, the MC has the wisdom of an old man (he has had a long life), so no h**ny hot headed brat (this a big plus... more>> for me) and you know he will resolve every problem easily, yep Sakamoto Desu Ga style (just his appearance is average), he's slowly building an harem (just girls falling in love with him) but he really just see them as brats for now (it's quite logic, considering his age), there's some touching family moments, the guy knows how to take care of his love ones.

There's this scene that made ROFL so hard.

Spoiler

He gives some aphrodisiac to these rapist guys and he locks them in a classroom, hehehe you can imagine what happened, and then the Principal of the school walks in, they tried to r*pe him and some teachers had to intervene to separate them, the poor principal needed counselling to overcome this trauma.

I like this novel but to be honest I think it's a bit overrated. I'm currently at chapter 65 and the author keeps using the "damsel in distress" stuff where the heroines keep getting kidnap so the MC can save the day. There isn't any actual plot going on, however there are a lot of foreshadowing and the world keeps building up. I guess it has a slow start but will bloom later on.

So for now 3.5/5
