Suddenly, high school student Subaru Natsuki has been summoned to another world on the way back from the convenience store. With the biggest crisis of his life being summoned to another world, and with no sign of the one who summoned him, things become even worse when he is attacked.

But when he is saved by a mysterious, silver-haired girl with a fairy cat, Subaru attempts to return the favor by helping her track down something that was stolen from her. When they finally manage to get a clue, Subaru and the girl are attacked and killed by someone.

Subaru then awakens in the place he was summoned and notices he gained the ability “Returns by Death” and has become a helpless boy that only has the ability to rewind time to a certain point by dying.

Beyond the despair, can he save the girl from the fate of death?

Really good and unique isekai with an interesting power system and history that is slowly being revealed as the story goes on. It also has the most character progression that I’ve seen in an isekai; at first you cringe at him constantly, but eventually he grows and you learn more about him and his past. Some of the best writing I’ve seen in a WN so far

Well this novel is about a teenager who saves girls left right and center. The author is kind of talented but story is too romance driven. MC sucks so bad even though his character is fleshed out. He only thinks with his d*ck as expected of teenager. Not mature enough for me.

*sigh*

Where shall I begin.
First, what I like about this novel.
The characters are quite good. They're reasonable, realistic & likeable. Kudos to that.

The idea is great, and well executed.

... more>> The story line while slightly too convenient, is also quite good.
The art is again, really well made.

No qualms about translation either, 5/5.

What I dislike, is the MC.
I like realistic characters. I like flawed characters.
I dislike utterly dumb & incompetent character that even after being slapped in the face 3 times with the answer still somehow fail to understand it. He was literally told 3 times, in the same day what he should do differently, and he STILL doesn't learn.

He's got this idiotic infatuation with Emilia, which makes no sense. He hasn't had much interaction with her.
And she didn't treat him in any especially good way. He likes her cause she's the 1st girl he met. And she helped him out. That's it. That basically boils down their relationship.

He is quite bad with the thinky thinky part. He struggles with figuring out things around him.
He's horribly with thinking up plans.
Even incredibly obvious solutions to problems he misses.
He learns incredibly slowly.

The MC is so unlikable, that the characters surrounding him have to make the novel enjoyable.

And no, he is not realistic. Unless he's supposed to portray someone with the intelligence & logical capabilities of an 8 year old.
Despite clearly being lacking in every way shape or form, he does absolutely NOTHING to improve himself.

Learning swordsmanship, was forced on him.
Learning reading, was forced on him.

Sometimes, he has sparks of brilliance completely incompatible with his character.
He makes surprising leaps in judgement far beyond anything he normally shows.
He jumps from IQ of 60 to 140 sometimes. Which makes no sense.

Hopefully, the LN will be better.
As he clearly was FAR more reasonable on the Anime than in the web novel.

Wait for the LN. I assume they'll fix the MC till that time. <<less

Very good story, the good points others have mentioned is most likely true and if you like isekai stories, this is worth a read.

The side characters, puzzles and the plot keeps this novel good enough to read, IMO.

My only complaint about this series is the MC (-1 star). The MC's good intelligence gathering and negotiation skills are often clashing with his very low wisdom/common sense and impulsiveness, which is frustrating to read. The MC's biggest weakness is that he can't tolerate help from others and prefers taking the frontline, even... more>> though he's the weakest of them all... <<less

First things first: this is a really good and well-written story, at least in my opinion. BUT, if you hate tragedies, then don't read this.

The story is about a guy called Subaru Natsuki, who one day is suddenly transported to another world. Yes, it starts off like pretty much any isekai, but that's also where the similarities end (mostly). Instead of being like a game with stats with a harem that automatically pops up out of nowhere and where the MC gets a lot of help from some god, he... more>> has to figure out this new world by himself, with no magical or physical abilities whatsoever. Even as far as I am, he still does not have any ways to attack or defend himself, only his brain. The only ability he has (although I said he has none) is being able to resurrect to a certain spot at a certain time, referred to as savespots by Subaru himself. The problem is that he does not have any control over where and when they change, as they do throughout the story.

He also ends up dying a lot in the story. And by the way, those deaths are not just written like: "he was shot and then died", the author describes pretty much almost every single death from the first wound to the point where he is losing consciousness and dying, without excluding how much it hurts and what each wound looks like with great detail.

I must say that the uniqueness of the story and how it is written is what made me interested and dragged me into it. The first 3 arcs are pretty cringy, simply because the MC is plain s*upid and does not realize how much of a pain in the ass he really is for the others around him. But once he does realize, and decides to start from zero (yes, almost title drop), the story becomes great.

All in all I love the story in general. I began watching the anime a while after it was done (anime ends almost at the same point in time as arc 3), and found myself loving the story the more I got into it.

In the end I also got to thank TranslationChicken for translating this story, with great quality translation done by hand. Thank you. <<less

This novel is really frustrating. I will only say that you have to have a very masochistic spirit to read it. This is the first review I've done on this site, and I'm doing it only because I feel like I have to do it, you'll see... the novel, as such, speaking of interest, yes, it can be considered interesting. A rather strange but curious plot for an Isekai, but, just the carefully of the novel, that is, the enormous stagnation that he has, is the protagonist Practically, the protagonist... more>> is not favored by the author. He just goes through extremely irrational situations, and while one would expect his psyche to improve after so much hardship, well it doesn't. Not only does he not do it, he doesn't show to do it. The novel has many volumes, more than 20 I think, and are you telling me that it is 20 volumes of personal growth and development of the protagonist? NO! Not f*cking! So the thing is, it's very frustrating to read for some people, no, for most people. In fact, the anime is more passable because at least when you watch it you feel that the plot is advancing, but the novel? Of course no, In any case, it is shown that the growth shown is not directly proportional to what it should have with so much suffering. We don't want it to be the OP lead that all the girls have, but at least, it is expected that in some situation the protagonist will emerge victorious without having to do something embarrassing both for the direct audience and for others. and there are many people who think that because the protagonist fails, and makes mistakes, this is a realistic novel, and let me tell you this in advance as an old reader, it is not so. Rezero is a novel by fantasy, and not only because the setting is fantasy or otherworldly, but also because the protagonist's reactions, thoughts, development, and capacity to it are fanciful and unrealistic. throughout the entire novel. Sorry if this has spelling mistakes, it turns out that I am writing it in Spanish with Google Translate so that it comes out in English. Oh, lastly, I read a review of a friend talking about how great this novel was, and the truth is that I do not take away his ideas or thoughts, nor do I despise them, but I admit that by saying that one loses his life reading Arifureta it shows that both his reason and his judgment is a big ball of shit. Arifureta may be a light novel full of plot holes, which I'm not even aware of, and may be a cliché of Isekai from protagonist OP who gets the girls, as well as having a disastrous anime adaptation, but... at least for me and Thousands of others, it's a Light Novel 500, 000 times better than Rezero, more readable, more enjoyable, and more entertaining. And I don't even want to touch you with the second part, Arifureta After, which is practically something that no novel has ever done. Isekai's lightest so far. Anyway, Rezero is good to watch, and he entertains you, but he frustrates you more than he entertains you. And Arifureta, as well as Arifureta After, are a masterpiece and highly entertaining. That's all. <<less

I may be biased as Re:zero was the first web novel I had ever read, but it is by far my favorite out of the ~170 I've read so far.

It's a fun novel. The translators and author are really great. Story's pretty long too (apparently only half way done, author said something about 12 or 14 volumes) and I really love the writing style of the author and translators. Arc 7 is going in an interesting direction.

For me, the storyline and the world the story takes place is interesting, not... more>> necessarily well written. The characters seem unique (compared to the usual Isekai at least). For once in an Isekai novel, I actually have no idea of know what's going to happen. Despite "return to death" the antagonists feel threatening. Antagonists aren't just killed off after a couple chapters. The places he visits actually feel important and unique. (in some other Isekai novels, MC visits, I think of some generic town/scenery, another couple chapters, and he/she's leaving for another place never to visit again.

I'll admit, I got a bit tired of some of the parts that just feel a bit too long, but thinking about it, the author might be going for a feeling of 'he finally did it!'

One thing I don't understand is why the hell BlackMazino's review has so many likes. I mean, maybe he/she wrote it as a joke and people liked it as a joke. It really looks like the writing of a 10 year old. Seriously though

"Why don't MC find powerful people... Make contract with devil/demon, find good weapon, make weapon using 'Japan knowledge's, learn blah blah blah, gather info on enemy weakness."

Let's see, he's already pretty friendly with the f*ckING SWORD SAINT, powerful people have their own problems, what demon/devil? (I mean, there is Ram and some others) but what about a contract, they're not always going to be f*cking helpful or permanent for that matter, he does find the enemy's weakness eventually or find some other way to get out of it.

And the "Japan knowledge" really ticks me off. Yup, modern weaponry is only in Japan, not anywhere else on Earth, Subaru the NEET and highschool dropout definitely knows how weapons work and are made, and the magical medieval style world he's in has the technology to manufacture or create weapons. <<less

It is such an vivid world, love the characters especially the main characters. The main character is very much human and this story is excellent in portraying determination, courage and despair. Admist the hardship there are also many heartwarming moments that makes you love the characters. An ranking that is not at least 4.4 blows my mind as I consider this an masterpiece easily in my top 5.

One of the best isekais I've known. One of the reasons is that the protagonists actually has to WORK hard for something, instead of waving his fingers and pressing buttons and get insanely power-ups, as consolation for being hit by a truck. Natsuki might be annoying at times, and extremely unbearable at other times, but what I really love about the protagonist is that he is still able to give kindness to those who'd hurt him and grinded him to dust in the previous loops, and received their support in... more>> return. Some of the comments I've read about the series seemed to think he should be able to do more as a transmigrator, but Natsuki was just a normal shut-in high school student, and it would be really hard to expect an ordinary out-of their-field-of-expert (other than being an extraordinary genius) person to accomplish all that without having brought the internet with him/her. And others said his ability is a cheat, which I might've agreed if pain was not involved, including that loop when he was nibbled to death by rabbits. And he braces the pain in order to save those who he loves <<less

The best isekai with dark fantasy but sometimes annoying MC (mostly until arc 3, but not a single character ever stops growing). It also has the best translation you can make out of any difficult to handle and philosophical literature/light novel. Totally unique and sophisticated work with a very unpredictable storyline that you'll never ever figure out for once. Don't believe me, try it if you can prove me wrong. The story revolves around Subaru's totally out of the world experiences even for an isekai and most of his interactions... more>> are with characters with more unique a background than the other. THIS IS AS UNTRADITIONAL AS AN ISEKAI COULD GET. Those who have hated themselves once but is honest with themselves can emphasize with the story the most, but don't get sick of his attitude because he constantly develops and you can almost taste this development with all the buds of your tongue. <<less

I'm laughing at all these people who dislike MC. I like his personality, it's unique. He's a hopeless NEET, who tries too hard to be like his dad. His take on charisma becomes annoying and sounds narcissistic, he's love for Emilia is shallow, but he goes on to love her genuinely. His so called wimpiness is a sign that he's still normal, it depicts his personality and enforces his self deprecation from the previous world. This has nice pacing, and the mere fact that many people are getting mad yet... more>> love Subaru's unique personality is proof of the author's brilliance. I've been investing a lot of time in this. Just showing a normal NEET, with no excelling abilities, randomly teleported to another world where violence is in every corner. I find a lot of his actions disagreeable and dumb, but seriously why are people HATING on it? It just shows a side of the MC, a personality, showing he is naive especially since as he was a kid he already developed insecurity, he's still stuck in that phase. I'm just gonna read and see more of this interesting dude, I don't know bout you people, but for me to feel a lot of emotions just reading one novel is awesome, I don't need to read a revenge, a tragedy, a shounen, a comedy, a romance, a harem, or any isekai with OP sh*t MC with bland personalities. <<less
