To talk about this novel simply, if you want to read a work of Chinese wuxia or xianxia in a well written literature formate, this is it. Some say it's boring or takes to long to develop action. It's true. Bodies don't fall starting from the sky. Plot is developed like a book, characters arnt one dimensional, and the MC has a dynamic development that makes sense. Most, if not all, Characters have meaning to them, the setting is explained, and sects conflicting with each other are given reasons. So... more>> it is a slow paced and boring work of fiction, if you don't expect something that's written like a good book.

You won't find simple, I'll kill you because I can. Clans don't think that the light sects should kill all dark sects simply because one type is evil. Even those characters in other Chinese web novels who are prideful and look down on the MC because he is a farmer are explained with reason. Their pride is justified to a point that it's not only tolerable but understandable for that characters backstory. <<less

Read this if you want to read a real novel with cultivation aspects.

By real, I mean believable characters with plausible personalities and styles. By real, I mean actual world building that takes time to build up. By real, I mean plot that isn't driven by face-slapping arrogant-templated second generation masters and their families.

I started reading this novel back in 2016 and sequently became a huge fan. We have an adorable MC that has a reasonable character development that is controlled by the events that happen around him (like... you know... more>> actual people). I know for fact that many people (same people who read ultimate face-slapping novels for fun) find the novel slow and thus boring. This is common for any believable book, with actual world building. This should be considered one of it's greatest strengths, however people who are after junkfood cannot always adjust to a fine cuisine. I can understand that, I just ask for everyone to give the novel a chance. I can tell you that even Harry Potter would be a lot less interesting if you would remove the intro and just start the book in Hogwarts.

Give it a chance

[Edit: 1/29/2019]

As most people can probably get by now based on comments, this novel isn't for everyone.

Period.

... more>> Due to the slow releases and diverted interests, almost 3+ years later, I decided to revisit this novel because it left a good impression on me and I was both surprised and annoyed at the level of negativity it receives simply for its slow pace.

To this, my previous remarks (that I have now removed in order to write a proper review) were scathing as I have seen and read countless works by CN authors that are of incredibly poor quality--pretty much near nonsensical storytelling, that is pretty much all fluff and no substance.

This story simply isn't one of those kinds.

The problem here is if one lacks patience, there will no doubt be a great deal of annoyance towards this story. Initially, I intended to wait for the translation to reach a sufficient mass considering the magnitude and pace of the novel, but now I decided to read ahead.

I still stand by what I said before. This novel is an gem. However, after reading over 300 chapters, I have a greater understanding as to why people feel the way they do about it, yet my appreciation for it is even higher. What I have come to realize is: it is immensely difficult to read this in bulk.

This story is like medicine. Its good for you, but its bitter and difficult to swallow. Also too much can be harmful. I think this was intended to be read on a chapter (s) per day basis with the author like how one would follow a soap opera for years. Its not boring if you watch it little by little. You wont even realize how long it is.

Unlike other novels the character interactions and how the author develops the MC is INCREDIBLY detailed. Virtually all characters play some roll one way or another, even behind the scenes. I feel a great deal of satisfaction of knowing why he is the way he is just by how the story develops. But it is agonizingly slow. Snail's pace in fact, in comparison to other novels.

In this novel, instead of a magical object falling out of the sky and knocking our MC over the head, giving him all the knowledge of an millennium year old grandpa and transforming his/her personality to conveniently suit the story (I.e super intelligent, cold, ruthless, calm a an autumn lake bla bla) our MC is a child that is the youngest son of a poor household so is very spoiled and terribly innocent. His personality and intelligence is slowly molded due to circumstances. Like breaking an arm allows him to learn how to read and write due to being on bed-rest unable to practice martial arts.

Everyone thinks of him as sweet, weak and helpless because he is just a cute little bean, and want the best for him, to the point of doting, but they also inadvertently whittle away his confidence as well. Not to mention, he knows zilch about martial arts so he believes everything the adults say because he doesn't know better. When he experiences things outside of what is norm by adults, he feel fear and confusion, thinking he is doing something wrong. Little by little, he feels he is very s*upid and inferior. So he lacks confidence to dispute other peoples words as they "know best" and blindly gropes on his own unless someone forces it out of him.

Therefore, for a period of time we see the MC seek acceptance, becoming stronger little by little, having to combat his feelings of disappointment over, and over... and over again. Hence why our MC takes so damn long to lvl up. But then, we rarely, if EVER see a main character reach the top without some external help or some bullsh*t inheritance. Plot armor for dayz, with everything just falling into place for him/her without really having to "struggle." To me, they pale in comparison to our little flower who trudges on step by step. I can totally see our MC being that Cultivation God overlooking millions of mortals with a steady and profound gaze with numerous vicissitudes that we see other typical MCs meet in the higher realms.

Now, Just imagine reading about how he for there.

You really cant just say it in a few words. <<less

You need a lot of patience for this one. I could deal with the slow pace, but the novel does not even follow MC. And the martial arts introduced seem rather weak compared to other novels.

Currently at chapter 31...I'm freaking pulling my hair out because the story is just so damn slow-paced! It can't get any slower. It is just for the sake of character development. So far, it switches point of views between the MC and his family and Piaomiao sect.

This novel is extremely slow paced. At Chapter 50 but the MC has yet to start his path of cultivation nor martial arts. It leads more towards the daily life styles of the characters around the MC. There are not much actions nor fights up till now. I read to pass time and wait for other novel chapter releases. But I look forward to what happen later in the novel.

I have mixed feelings about this series. There are times that I feel like dropping the series, but there are few times that make want to continue reading. Read up to chapter 20, and I still do not know who the MC is, maybe there are multiple MC’s? I do not know. As of now, the title seems like a misnomer, with some many characters introduced, not one character has cultivated. Until further notice, I would tag the series as a slice-of-life.

This is the best xianxia novel that I have ever read. Nothing came close to this novel. Seriously!

It's not slow-paced. It is simply a detailed narative. Every character has its importance, masterfully interwoven to each another and foreshadowed to every incoming event. Every movement of a character is put to a function in the story and thread to some future development.

The cultivation and martial arts are depicted vividly. The existence of qi energy and the mechanic to abuse it is properly depicted and set to some advantage and limitation on... more>> story. The fighting scenes are writen with a great detail of movement and choreography. Even some encounter with bandit or assailant could get me thrilled by the suspense.

Read it! I almost learn mandarin just to read the continuation..... <<less

Long time lurker, first time posting! I actually wrote out a long review but it was deleted when I alt-tabbed...

This story is centered around our young hero Xiahua and his family. Many call this story far too slow paced, but I find this series extremely well written. Especially considering the usual tr*sh we all sift through... For starters, I actually care about each character on an individual basis, each of my opinions is formed from countless interactions and steady plot progression. The only gimmick is the ever present legendary... more>> artifact; however, this treasure is really quite low key. Xiahua still has no idea what it does lol.

I hope more people start reading this novel and garner more attention to the complete lack of any new chapters translated. I would really love this novel to be completely translated. Even more so than my current favorite Desolate Era. <<less

I like how this is being written in no hurry. It's developing the world and people around the MC organically. Some reviewers are right that this seems to be written like a western novel. I'm happy to read this, it's quite refreshing. I haven't read much but it's showing signs of brilliance.

Update: I was not disappointed.

To sum things up, this story is like a restaurant while the other novels are like fast-food.
You know you're gonna have to wait but you know it's gonna be better.
Fast-food are good guilty pleasure but only eating that is not good. It's slow cause the general plot is advancing without the MC during 60-70 chapters and you'll have in parallel the story of the MC which is pretty normal life and the story of his future sect. From then it gets more interesting because he begins to train... more>> martial arts although he doesn't begin to cultivate inner energy for a while but it stays entertaining and well developed. <<less

I'm completely in love with this novel!

The story starts slow - as in 'it takes the MC a very long time to get somewhat powerful' - but as previously mentioned that only makes the foundation and character building soo much better. If you want a powerful MC from the start this story is not for you, but for anyone else this might be the gem they've been looking for.

The story is still very mysterious, but the way the author lets us peek behind some secrets is very rewarding on an... more>> emotional level! <<less

4.5/5

Pretty solid story, easily a tier above your average "Xianxia" imho (that's not really that hard).

Now if you want to read it, you should know what to expect, this is not your typical "Xianxia" or Chinese web novel to be more precise, it's more closer to an actual Wuxia book. The part of "Xianxia" has not been very clear so far, is more like stuff of legends, that being said there are mortal martial schools and there exist the famous Jianghu.

The story is ok pretty simple for now, slow paced... more>> and the pov (between the MC and his family and some important occurrences in the jianghu) changes from time to time, but it all will be connected eventually.

The strong point for me are its characters, very fleshed out and realistic, the MC is a child, that actually acts like a child with some touches of maturity from time to time, he's drives by his pure desire to protect his family from bullies and has a truly righteous heart, he might not be specially clever, but he's definitely not an idiot, just a somehow naive child that worries to much about his loved ones. Which is understandable considering that he comes from a family of farmers, humble people with low education, but big hearts.

Most of the characters that interact with him are pretty ok, as in every novel and (of course) even in the real world there's some young master or gangster that believe that they can do whatever they want, but there's actually also good and chivalrous people (in some novels it seems everyone apart from the mc's clique is a big a**hole), the social situation of the mc's world is pretty close to some wuxia novels theres is big, medium and low martial sects, that constantly struggle with each other for power in the cruel jianghu. But it is a vast world, I'm pretty sure the MC is in a very backwater place.

Now what can cause some to be extremely annoyed is
Spoiler

That the MC just starts training after like 70 chapters and his training is "apparently futile" and he just have his first fight in like 120 chapters, besides he haven't learned a proper inner energy method, tho his about to enter the sect (of mortals btw), nonetheless he has made a lot of progress just that it isn't apparent.

There's also a lot of chapters dedicated to his grandma and eldest brother marriage, which I personally like it, it helps to care more about the MC and his family.

[collapse]

If you're gonna read this, you should come with the mindset to read an actual book, not a webnovel, which strong points are fast paced action packed chapters, where the adventure starts from chapter 1, which is ok. Be patient the first book (till chap 146) have a lot of slice of life, the second book (>146) I believe (heven't read) is gonna be his rise to prominence in the jianghu. And the MC of course has his weird item cheat xD <<less

Legend of the Cultivation God is a slow paced story what is actually quite refreshing, because most other novels in the “Action-Xianxia” genre are really fast paced and have shallow storylines.

Also “Novels Ground” do a good job with there translation, so its nice to read!

The author seems to take his time and develops the characters deeper than other novels of the genre. He not only deepens the characters but also there background – the world around them.

There are quite some scene changes through which the reader can learn... more>> more about other side characters and some other matters. But actually in this novel I find the scene changes not anoying as in other stories, props to the author!

If you don’t need a fast paced storyline in which it seems that the character is already after 2 Chapters at the end of the story and gets for the remaining 200-400 chapters glory hymns written by the author, then LotCG could be something for you.

For now I’ll give it a 4/5 after I’ve read more I will consider to give it maybe a 5/5.

SD.

EDIT:

I have to give all of you a little warning, because I'm right now at chapter 82 and the MC seems not just a little bit dumb... <<less

Slower than most Chinese novels. But the story is much better. The characters are fleshed out just the right amount and it uses the different POVs properly. There are no glaring problems and is much better than most novels I've come across. If you don't like slow pacing, you likely won't like this. But give it a try, as it's quality is really good and may just hook you. Also, The translation quality is really good so far so that's also a plus point.

I read the raw, the story is good, however I don't like some part where the author makes the MC have female fall for him in the latter arc... is like he save a girl the girl like him, he enter a inner disciple test but some how hijack some inner disciples test which is only for females inner disciples which is to decide on the next sect head and show some illusion that is caused by their heart demon but some how got two female heart devil or demon is the MC so from illusion become the real things, He enter a treasure trove saves a girl once again... is unintentionally but then... read the story yourself to know.

current love interest is the girl that fished MC years ago, name meng/ dream in English but currently called Zi Xia, girls that like MC but MC did not like back, Nie Xiao Yu< MC hold some feelings for her but not comfrim, Zhang Ping Er< was saved by MC in the treasure trove then give MC inner disciple spot but then saw Meng/ Zi Xia then MC literally forgot that he was talking to her went to talk to Zi Xia legit friend-zoned, Kong Que, Chen Chen< this is not the chen chen that follow his brother love interest as of where I read

The story is slow. Don't bother reading it if you have little/medium patience, or if you like novels like BTTH, WQDK, Emperor's Domination etc. If you still want to read it, start from 80th chapter because believe it or not, the MC starts learning martial arts around 80th for the FIRST TIME.

After 80th chapter, story becomes faster, and a lot more interesting. MC's aptitude for martial arts is so bad, it is hilarious, lot of new characters are introduced, including some interesting ones.

Pros & Cons:
Spoiler

Pros:
Much better writing than most Xianxia. Certainly much better than crap like BTTH, Emperor's Domination, WQDK, MGA, Renegade Immortal etc.

Cons:
Story is slow, and doesn't seem to contain Cultivators, only Martial Artists.
Writer is not able to focus on the important, and there is a lot of irrelevant fluff in the story. 3600 Chapters already and still ONGOING, so maybe it will finish when I am 80 Yrs old.

Recommendation:
Try it when you are bored, maybe you will be even more bored, maybe it will hold your interest till you get to chapter 80. <<less

Incredibly good!! What more is there to say, the novel is indeed slow to the point I even thought of leaving it for a while, but I couldn't cause the story got me, it has a great development of the character and everyone feels really. I actually prefered the main story to the martial arts POV, if you want action this may not be for you but if you like a well structured novel with excellent character development, you should give this a try

This is a great novel with a lot of world-building. Unlike other novels the MC doesn't start cultivating right away. He starts with martial arts. No idea why some reviewers say that it is bad. The POVs change so that the reader can get a better understanding of the characters as well as the world. The characters seem alive unlike in other novels.

I hope everyone can appreciate this novel.
