Occupational Analysis of “Crown Princess”:

Number One: Promotion prospects are bleak, Crown Princess—Empress—Empress Dowager, the time between each is vast, and difficulty is extremely high.

Number Two: No guarantees of continuous labor, not to mention the lack of insurance, you can be dismissed at any time, furthermore you will no longer be able to start another career!

Number Three: The nature of the job is dangerous, at any time there is the danger of death, if the Crown Prince isn’t able to ascend as emperor, you will fall out of luck together with him, if the crown prince ascends as emperor, you have to be careful as to not unluckily fall alone.

Number Four: Moonlighting as a s*x worker, though the intensity of the job is unlikely to be very big, however, there is no power to select the service partner.

To summarize, the job of Crown Princess isn’t particularly a good job, no prospects, large stress, and the manual labor is intense……

Okay, in fact that was just a flood of words, a simple summary is:

This is a story about a “woman’s” struggles in the harem……

At the same time, it is also about a “man’s” sufferings in the harem……

I was cringing the whole time reading this (only few chapters out right now).

Wait, hear me out.

I've read a decent amount of historical Chinese novels, and something I've always been wondering about is: how do those who've transmigrated from the modern era rapidly adapt to the more ancient society's rigid etiquette?

Finally, we have here a novel that has bypassed this plot hole. This beautiful girl now has a male soul, naturally he knows nothing on how to act as a woman, even more so as a crown princess who's being... more>> watched very carefully as every action and every word is analyzed. Thus, it was hard to read because of how uncomfortable he made me feel -- because he's doing it wrong! And it's so refreshing. He's actually kinda cute, with his ignorance. I can't wait to see how our MC will actually become a princess in heart and in mind, or if he retains his male mindset and pe*verted tendencies. (4/5) <<less

Quite a fun novel about a guy who dies (?) and is placed into a body of a girl (Crown Princess). So far what I like the best is the attitude: he doesn't panic, rage, scream or do any of those things that would usually be people's normal reactions to suddenly switching genders. Instead, he laments not being able to enjoy the ''sweet flowers'' that suddenly surround him cause he also became one.

I believe that this novel has a drama adaptation (Go, Princess, Go!) which was released in 2015 if... more>> I am not mistaken. It is also very fun so if someone wants to enjoy and see how a similar story develops, you can also watch it. It is more of a comedy than historical drama. <<less

Truly hilarious! I was somehow expecting an elegant love story with the regular run of the mill political infighting of a crown prince's harem and throne. Instead, it's about a pervy guy that has transmigrated into the crown princess. Too bad there aren't more chapters yet, but I'll be eagerly reading this series as soon as the next chapter releases. The crown prince seems like a real jerk so far, so it'll be a treat to see how the MC will manipulate everyone around him with his sarcastic wit and... more>> blasé about love attitude. At this point I don't expect much in the romance department. Too bad it's not yaoi though, but it's similar enough because the MC's mind is still his old pervy self. <<less

Its interesting. Its disorienting at first because of the gender bender thing but it gets better later on. I've read other historical gender like chu wang fei, to be a virtuous wife, mistaken marriage novels and et al. And must say this is a first for its different start and cause of transmigration. I'm still holding back with the rating because I cant say for now if the plot is well established and if the characters' disposition and personality suit m taste. Well, I'll expect a lot in this WN... more>> please continue to translate this and thank you for your hardwork. :D <<less

This review will be long and mixed with comparison to drama.

It's the best in its way.

MC is smart and consistent to logic. I love how the author keep portraying MC male soul. It's funny when their (I'm sorry I can't choose between he/she so I use neutral term) playboy act is shown eventhough they are female now, kinda get GxG vibe here and there :D

... more>> It also has character development in MC. You can see later that their female side will be blended in.

So this novel portrays the struggle of gender change the best, but only in MC mind, as MC physical act is fluently portray soft ancient woman. Author avoided this plot hole by telling MC is training for several months to be a graceful elegant empress, but no detailed explanation. Why?

Because this novel is heavily political.

To the point romance will be put to the last here because it's also layered with betrayal.

So for you who watch the drama, and read this because of the romance in drama... Prepared to be disappointed, okay. Because the romance in drama, I can accept Qi Sheng (ML) reason, and somehow I can forgive him. But in novel... He is too bullshit, he is too jerk, to the point that I can't any reason author will be saying can save him, eventhough the reason might be the same in drama. Here is why:

Spoiler
  1. QS betrayed MC once. In a way that MC almost lost their life when MC is trying to trust him m for the first time. The betrayal is already bad start, but almost losing life is too fatal.
  2. If QS trying to seek forgiveness or trying get MC trust after that, or talking to MC, it might be okay. But NO. After that, QS move always dangerous to MC and MC's family. I know it's for political stability, for the sake of MC too (bcs he MIGHT be in love with MC and he wants MC is safe from any direction, MC own family included), but when you see it from MC point, it's too deadly, you can't help to fully distrust QS like MC did. That's why any QS romantic pursuing act is failed.
  3. After MC telling about his soul is a male, and MC (looks like) give up on against QS, he is still testing MC. It's understandable since MC not trusting him before. But... Hey. MC, with male pride in his soul, telling you about his gender change, then willing to be under you... Is it not enough? It might be illogical but if QS stitch the hints about his weird act, MC being male is believable. And you still not trust MC is on ur side and still testing them in dangerous way?
  4. Jiang Shi. QS took advantage of her to the fullest. I know Jiang Shi get benefit too, she can get close to QS, the man she loves. But QS as the one in upper hand, he can do anything other that that. And QS use her for MC... really... Too scum. At first I hate her, but QS is the one controlling her, so QS is the one that should be hated the most. Somehow I also felt sorry for her... She is fall in love with the wrong person...
  5. QS always subdue MC by force in bed. I know in ancient times it might be a common thing, but subdue MC by force, not long after MC gave birth and telling him about he is male in soul... And it seems like he is in love with MC no matter the gender of MC soul, but by force, even when he still didn't know that MC isn't fully woman... I can't see love at all.
  6. Also, if in later chapter QS pretend he almost dead like in drama... The more reason to hate him.
[collapse]

All that detail isn't portrayed much in drama, that's why I can forgive QI Sheng in drama. His jerk move isn't heavy in drama.

Even after I detailed of how much I hate the ML aka QI Sheng, I still love him and this novel. Idk why.......

Oh. I also disappointed that their child didn't get much screen time... This novel need some sweetness from cute baby...

PS:

For anyone who comment, hey MC just accept ML and be woman fully, you are already woman in body anyway, what's the use of going against it? Have some consideration and rethink about it please. Gender change is not easy. Even in our reality like transgender or anyone who feels different gender perspective from their body, is really difficult to accept. How about MC gender change by force like this? MC needs time. Like I said earlier, MC female and male soul will be blended. MC will still thinking with heavy logic from male view, but also from female view, also aware that they are now woman, plus trying using their feeling... :3 <<less

If you read this story expecting the typical c-romance-novel "domineering CEO type falls in love for the first time" plotline you will be sorely disappointed. The main character and the male character with the most screen time (the crown prince and later emperor Qi Sheng) are all but enemies. In the early chapters, there are some "wacky hijinks" where the MC runs around to a brothel and other, similar, things but don't be fooled by those few light-hearted chapters because at the end of the day the story is very... more>> much a serious palace drama and those chapters only serve to introduce us to the main political players in the dynasty the MC finds herself transmigrated to.

To know what kind of novel this is all you really have to do is look at the title. "The Promotion Record of a Crown Princess". Read those words and understand them if you don't want to feel disappointed by the direction the story goes in later chapters. For a crown princess in an imperial China setting to be promoted, what needs to happen? The current emperor needs to either die or be deposed and then the crown princess is "promoted" to the empress. Most people seem to be on board with that idea. But you have to look a little further to know what to expect from the story. How does an empress get "promoted" again after being lifted up from "crown princess"? Well, she has to have a male heir (not necessarily born by her but one has to exist) and then the current emperor (her nominal husband remember) has to either die or be deposed and in that way the empress will be "promoted" to empress dowager.

If you keep your eyes on the prize and read the story with those things in mind - it's an enjoyable palace drama. But if you read it expecting a typical vanilla romance between the main character and the ostensible male lead... you're gonna be disappointed.

edit: Having now read to chapter 111 I stand by the entirety of the review I wrote at c70 but I would like to add an addendum: All that stuff I said above is still true but
Spoiler

your disappointment will only have to last up to chapter 110. After that, the vanilla romance finally begins.

The story is really good and I loved it so much. It's so hilarious and intense at the same time. The whole story is basically the emperor and empress trying to pit each other and the emperor coming out as the victor. lol......I totally understand why the empress didn't trust the emperor, I mean who can trust him when he uses her as part of his chess piece in his giant chess game??!! And I feel bad for the empress, I mean the guy/girl is sandwiched between the emperor and... more>> her family, and her actions were justified in order to save her own ass. She did everything for the greater good of both sides.

And I feel so bad for the 9th prince aka the bathroom lord. The dude has a crush on the empress but I guess partly because of her family power. But I don't really ship them, in the end, he was an a**hole.

My fav couple in the story is Yang Yan aka the tree climbing dude and the empress. Their bromance is the best!! The duo bickering and stabbing each other in the back but still harbors no ill sentiments for each other, I just absolutely love the relationship of those two.

And the empress herself, the guy inside was dumb at the beginning and a complete pe*vert at that, but he eventually grew up and I like his character development a lot.

tbh the beginning of the story is boring, funny but boring......I almost dropped it. But the story gets truly interesting from when he/she get's promoted to the empress and then the story starts to spice up. And Lu Li...I really hated her at the beginning tho, a maid going over the head of her boss and making decisions for her. daaaam I hate that so much but gladly her character was better at the end.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book.

This is one of my depressing feeling like novel I've ever read. I don't recommend this for you who like to see a fluffy romance, a good and doting ML. MC actually done a pretty good job, not being a jealous wife, and gradually accepting his new identity as a woman (in his previous life he is a man).

The main issue in this novel for me is the trust issue between the couple is pretty severe. ML choose to save another wife instead of MC, then ML plot and schemes... more>> a lot, which is one of them involve pushing MC to the river while ML subordinate wounded him in the chest. Even if in the end it explain the reason, but I think it can not be justified at all.

ML pretends to have been in love with his brother's wife just to deceive the emperor, his previous wife (the one that soul got switched with MC) supposed to know about that but she can't help getting jealous and ML gradually out of love with her because of he thought she is never try to understand him. Then the wife fell in to the pond with ML brother wife, got miscarriaged, and ML choose to save the fcking who*e first instead of her. What a good husband.

Then ML gradually discover the wife soul has changed, and his feeling came back and come to love MC, but he never explain clearly about reasons for everything but hope MC will trust him once more. He gradually change (or the author forcefully make his character to be more decent) but he is still scheming against the world.

Because of their misunderstanding or distrust toward each other, MC then plot to kill ML just so he can survive and be the Empress Dowager. ML knew, but because of his love (I am kinda doubtful of this until the end of the story in which ML actually let the MC be the Empress Dowager by pretend to be dead), he let her plot, but he crushed the plot by plotting MC, and in the end he even let MC go to survive, while he is being surrounded by enemy. I think it is already in the late chapters that he turns for the better, but still the hurt has been done and for me ML is a bastard, a jerk, and an incompetent husband who make his wife to never feel safe and afraid of his scheming.

Really not my favorite one, but translator done a good job translating thus. <<less

5/5 for me.

I loved the drama so came here as soon as the novel finished translating. For the people who are like me, you can read this novel without any hesitation. Actually the drama was more on the comediac side whereas the novel deals with some serious scheming/conspiracies especially in the 2nd half.

Someone here compared this novel with To Be A Virtuous Wife. While I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that statement I liked the ML from TBAVW more. For the ML here, idk why but I couldn't like him that... more>> much. I didn't see much character development from his side. I just don't get why he played with MC's trust every damn time and then expected her to trust him again, to give their relationship a chance like wtf is wrong with your mind, you s*distic b*tch?

But I liked the MC. I liked her very much. She was hilarious I seemed to agree with all of her decisions and she neither disappointed nor frustrated me like the MCs we usually see in C-Novel.

I would've given this novel a 4 star tbh but decided against it only because of the surprise I got at the end.😂 So don't be discouraged seeing the ratings/bad reviews and give this a go. I hope you guys will love this like I did. Happy reading! <<less

Fun transmigration story with a gender-bending twist, and a dash of Boys' Love.

I came across this novel after I watched the web series adaptation (Go Princess Go, 太子妃升职记) of it quite some time ago, probably two years back. The web series is absolutely delightful and most refreshing. I had so much fun and laughter watching it. That is what compels me to read the novel too.

The web series and the novel has many differences, but the core remains the same. The protagonist was a young guy transmigrated into a different... more>> body. Only, the body is of a beautiful woman with bountiful bosom and super hot body—just the type he desires. This new identity created lots of mishaps and pain for the protagonist. Not only did he have to suffer gender slash identity crisis, but he also the wife of the Crown Prince, on top of that, an unwanted wife.

Thus begins his tumultuous life as the Crown Princess in the palace with hidden dangers lurking in every corner. He also spends his time lamenting his lack of the right 'equipment' to enjoy all those beauties that surrounds him in the palace. Not that he did stops trying to mol*st these beauties mentally and physically at every chance he gets.

The thing is, if you are expecting romance, you might be a little disappointed here. The dude is very much a typical guy. He is all about practicality and forever in the survival mode. He is just too clear-headed to be fooled by any sweet talkings or romances—a tough to please character when it comes to romancing. All the guys in the story are most of the times frustrated with the protagonist as 'she' is not the regular female type. Then again, this is the protagonist's unique trait that interest the guys oh so very much.

I did have fun reading this novel, and it did make me laughed out loud quite a number of times. It was an entertaining read. Still, some parts are a tad bit repetitive and boring, like the lengthy political plotline. Aside from that, the protagonist's conflict with the antagonist (his husband, the Crown Prince) is long-drawn-out, and it gets on my nerves at times. Even right till the end, I am kind of questioning if the protagonist really loves the Crown Prince and how much?

Enough on the analysis. The most important thing is that I am pretty happy with the novel, and it was a unique story that I wouldn't forget anytime soon. I am giving this a solid four stars out of five.

I'm going to be honest, this novel was so bad. I watched Mr queen and thought it was great and wasn't very happy with the ending since the MC had to go back to his original body. I heard in the novel he stays so I had great hopes coming in to read it.

Such a dissapointment. The ML sucks and the MC character is lowkey misogynistic. It doesn't feel like they loved each other by the end.

I’m a terribly picky person, and it’s rare that I find a novel that I would actually not get bored or frustrated halfway through and drop. But this. This is my top tier. One of my favorite stories on this site. There are not enough words to describe how amazing this is. I can only hope I do it a bit of justice in this review.

Our MC is extremely silly, given that he was a male that became a female. Unlike many other stories, actually adjusting to that reality was... more>> extremely difficult for her, and I love the author so much for doing that. Like, for many people, if you would switch genders for the rest of your life unwillingly and randomly, you wouldn’t be able to calmly accept it and would have internal if not external resistance to your gender! Our MC had it especially difficult, as she had to act as the magnanimous Princess to a rather fickle and cunning Prince. But our MC is such a perfect person (not in a Mary Sue like way) that just wants to have peace and not fight anyone, an extremely difficult task when she’s the daughter of a powerful family her husband wants to overthrow, concubines wanting to throw down at any given chance, an annoying side piece that keeps popping up, and worst of all, a really ambitious husband that will do anything to get the throne. At least our dear MC has a loyal sidekick in the ever funny Lv Li!

Speaking of the ML, I swear we spent more than half the time wondering what Qui Sheng was thinking. It was a bit frustrating with him, as you never know what he’s planning until he’s actually done it, and he rarely tells the MC anything, leaving her to flounder and try to counter with her own moves. It’s clear that he loves the MC later on, but that’s tempered with the fact that he would not hesitate to put her in a dangerous situation to reach his own goals (aka throwing her into a raging river to escape his own guards posing to kill her). He’s a brilliant tactician, and a dangerous force to be reckoned with, which the MC bravely tries to meet head on to try to protect herself and those she cares for. I wouldn’t want this man as my enemy. He’s also definitely not the stereotypical black hearted, lover-obsessed but perfect boring Gary Stus we see so often with Chinese romance novels. He definitely works against our MC many times, and he’s calculating ALL THE TIME. Who’s your enemy and who’s your friend? They both work for the ML you have no friends here.

The plot is amazing, and is never boring. There was never a point where I was like ‘Please hurry the heck up’, or that I got so uninterested in that it was a pain to slog through. I throughly enjoyed every bit of this novel, and I HIGHLY recommend you read it! <<less

It’s a satisfying gender bender historical story for me.

The story started quite abrupt with the way we suddenly were presented with a guy soul flying with Heavenly Lord to find him a new body to occupy.

He himself didn’t realize that the Lord meant to give him a women body. He feels so miserable since he is surrounded with beauties in a harem but he can’t do anything about it cause he is one himself being a Crown Princess.

Not to mention he is caught in awkward situation as her husband, the... more>> Crown Prince loves a woman who is the wife of his fifth brother (Prince). The woman loves the Crown Prince too. The fifth Prince loves the woman too. So it’s a love square. Crown Princess loves the Crown Prince. Crown Prince and fifth Prince love the same woman. The woman loves the Crown Prince. And she is the wife of the fifth Prince. Yea so mess up.

The story has a good amount of comedies mix in it which I like so we don’t get bored with the heavy politics stories. Through out the story the comedy is kept up good to lighten the mood a bit surrounding the real story of the novel.

It reminds me a lot of To Be Virtuous Wife but add a touch of comedy in it and the original soul is a guy.

Definitely worth to read for people who likes historical female transmigration/reincarnation story. <<less

The characters are interesting and the drama is deep.

Read this if you like to be tortured with unknown character motivations and bet on who actually has sincere feelings.

The main character is not s*upid, but will struggle to understand the other characters alongside the reader. At least the main character has sufficient reason to not trust people enough to just be honest with each other.

EDIT: This might be outdated because I dropped it!

The MC in this is AMAZING. So cunning and strong! Lu Li, the MC's maid, is also absolutely amazing. Lu Li is ranked as one of my favourite characters not just in this novel, but in c-novels in general.

The ML is a scumbag, but I like scumbags so I was fine with that for a long time - UNTIL NOW.

The first half of the novel is hilarious and also very interesting, a good read in general. In later chapters it has... more>> gotten a bit darker, though, at least for the characters I care about.

So, about the ML and why I'll probably drop this:

Spoiler

He is very scheming and selfish, and several times he has betrayed the MC in horrific ways. When he learnt the MC was a "fake" it seemed like they were going to become partners in crime. This is not what happens, and WARNING: the other times it seems like it will happen, it also won't.

I actually didn't care much about all the sh*t he does because my focus is the MC. Also, the ML/MC interactions were funny anyway, they made good enemies.

This all changed when he came came for Lu Li.

First off, at around this point in time he realized the MC was a male in a female body. He forces the MC to say "I am woman" on an absolutely horrifying scenes where he threatens them with what you'd imagine :| The MC cries for the first time in the novel (and they have suffered a lot throughout) and the one scene honestly made me want to barf, it was horrifying.

Immediately after, he tried to kill Lu Li. I stopped "not caring" about him and he honestly became one of my most hated characters ever. His actions after that were worse and worse - trying to r*pe the MC to humiliate them taking the cake.

The MC has also clearly begun to sink further into despair after Lu Li left; partly because of having to succumb and say that they were a woman, but also because they are now alone with no one they can trust.

At this point she is very alone and losing it and it can be seen in numerous ways. Without Lu Li here it's also way harder to look past it. This isolation of the MC turned the comedy into a horror story in the span of a chapter.

Anyway the ML is dead to me.

Callback to when the ML and the MC slept together for the first time and the MC called out Lu Li's name! Gosh, I wish it really had been Lu Li!

[collapse]

In summary, soon to be dropped but Lu Li is still a queen. <<less

Usually I don`t write reviews, I just find someone with the same basic opinion as mine and give them a like. But this time i`ve found nothing like what I thought and in some cases I felt I`ve read a different novel altogether.

This novel was not exactly funny to me, but it did put a smile on my face sometimes.

Imho, this novel is

Spoiler

a love story between two really crooked people in a awful environment. And I loved it. Please, don`t get me wrong. I don`t agree with highly disfunctional relationships. But this fictional one kind of moved my heart.

[collapse]

I dare say the focus was not exactly the politics because the politics were not too complicated really. It`s just that at times the author was clever and made it seem so, in other occasions we need to be patient because we as readers don`t have enough information and sometimes we should overlook little plot holes (which I don`t mind at all). To me the politics were there to enhance the tension and the stakes of the relationships.

I love how the transition from male to female is felt in that sense of powerlessness.

Spoiler

It makes sense since no matter how smart MC is, she/he has less information, less influence, less advantages to offer to possible allies, less mobility, less physical strength and so on.

[collapse]

I really liked this novel. <<less
