The Gate of Revelation, previously Gate of Apocalypse is one of the few CN novel in NU that does not get the attention it deserves, it is really really underestimated. All in all, GoR can be actually described as a "fun" read, yes, even if it has apocalyptic-game world theme. But it's the slightest bit of " dark ", instead it's very fun and this is very true as more time passes.

To rate this novel as a 4.0.. Is truly an underestimation to the greatness of this novel.

Beware of slight... more>> spoilers below ! Read at risk.

Theme : The theme of the novel is apocalypse in the real world, with game like elements appearing in the world. This, however, only affects certain people and very few people knew about it's existence. The earth they are living in is basically 'invaded' by people from higher realms who calls themselves ' players ' making the original habitants of earth NPCs. The players treat the world as a game and the NPCs fought to exist, they don't just battle in any place though, but instead a dungeon like place where there are mysteries and puzzles they need to overcome to beat the dungeon, so not only brawns but brains too. In addition to that, the dungeons doesn't mean it always has to be something like the original dungeon concept in dungeons & dragons. Anything can be a dungeon! From a secret location, an island, a mausoleum, all the way to an entire city! The scale of the ' dungeon ' is so big I wouldn't be surprised if t the end of the novel the entire Earth would be a dungeon.

Style : Actually, this novel practically improves at every part from style to story as the story goes on, so at the early phase you might not agree with me at all if I say that I like the author's style.

Also, it does not use the leveling system that game like world usually uses, there are distinctions, like A rated, B rated, etc. But the author doesn't focus on that at all so there is not much complications stats and all those things, in fact the battle scenes are not a strong point of this novel, it's strong points lies in it's mysteries, real-world knowledge use, fun read and excitement.

The translator is Podao and he translates 7 FREE Chapters a week at the time I am reading, so no need to worry about quality and speed either.

Story : The pace of the story is just right to me, not too fast nor too slow. It has it's own one-off jokes and when it does, it is very funny. At first, the story picks up very slowly. The mysteries and puzzles of the dungeons are very entertaining and it adds a premise to the story, if I were to say one of the things the novel is lacking, it's in it's battle scenes, because I myself does not feel too into it when the battle scenes occur, and compared to some other Master-class battle scenes writer, GoR's battle scenes indeed fell short, there is a bit of improvement after 150 chapters or so though.

As time pass, the story will reveal more and more secrets about the world they are living in, and the mysteries that it will reveal gave me chills everytime I read it, it is one of the best aspects I loved about GOR. This however, does not appear in the beginning chapters so to fellow readers out there, I beg you to stay with it for awhile before deciding to drop it because it gets more and more interesting as time goes on, especially when it reaches the 70s or something chapter, it only gets better and better.

Another aspect that this novel is falling short of is that the author doesn't really put too much attention for some small details, he is much more focused on the " bigger picture " of the novel, but this, also improves as time pass.

Tldr; Basically, Gate of Revelation is NOT a perfect novel, it has it's own perks and faults but the faults are few to mention (things like small plot holes in the system, C.X's unwillingness to remove garfield & his reasons, etc) and as time passes, GOR has evolved as a novel in the entirety and it tops my list as one of the best of NU. I can even say that this is my favorite Apocalypse novel. If you are willing to be a bit patient and is willing to ignore some small aspects, then you are up for an exciting, great read in a fresh take to the apocalypse genre.

Go try it out ! 9.0/10 <<less

At first, I wasn't too impressed by this, but then, I read the Chinese raw and I was throughly hooked on to this

It takes a long time to get the ball rolling (2nd dungeon is like chapter 100+) but it’s worth it. Even though it is long, all the fights doesn’t feel forced unlike other ones where random characters just jump in one after Another for no apparent reason. You can see the fights that are going to happen yet you will be surprised almost every time

I admit though... more>> the first dungeon is not that exciting, the others will grab your interest. Also it’s one of the rare wuxia where the MC manages to keep his pen*s in his pants despite having multiple chance. Its refreshing <<less

Overall it's a interesting read, however it feels unpolished at times as there are a lot of small kinks and nuances that the author has not fleshed out too well.

Here's a few issues just to illustrate:
Spoiler

1) The people who created/host this 'game' must have an incredibly high level of sophisticated knowledge/technology, however they fail to maintain their core AI and don't even notice that it has rebellious elements?
2) The 'anomaly' factor that the MC has become doesn't seem to be very difficult to reproduce in the first place, which begs the question: why weren't there more of them? Why is the MC the first?

[collapse]

Things I dislike:
- The pet system. Reminds me of Zhan Long's pet system which was somewhat boring and tedious to read about, especially when everyone can have one. Also, MC prefers keeping a weaker pet purely out of sentimentality when in fact his life could be determined by his pet choice... Hmmm idk about that.
-Skills. They're unreadable. MC has to just blindly guess what skills to invest in as the 'system' does not provide any description about their usages. What kind of design is this?
-Mc's skill. MC's skill is one of the worst, most garbage skills that i've ever seen. It's absolute shit. Supposedly it's a 'god' ranked skill, yet it's just so distastefully bad that I don't know what else to say.

If not for the above it probably would have been a 4.5/5 for me, but i'll doc a star. <<less

I went into this novel because of the cool new concept the story was based on and the fantasy/action/romance genre.

After 150 chapters (i forget when) ... more>>
Spoiler

The Macs girl friend gets kidknapped by her father for 250 mother f*cking chapters. This was the most annoying mother f*cking thing in the world to me. Once the gf was kidknapped the story went from amazing to absolute crap. It takes 200 chapters for the girl to even be mentioned and they still haven't met up. You can't have a romance and than take it away for the majority of the crappy story you are writing.

[collapse]

The plot became ridiculously boring and just completely made me lose my interest. It became the same fantasy action novel as everything else. Well this author is just as terrible as most writers out there who just can't write a novel that keeps you interested. Yes I'm bias because I want a good fantasy/action/romance novel but is it really that hard to write one? Why do you have a romance and than once everything starts getting good you write off the girlfriend for over 200 chapters. I caught up to the current translations.

Spoiler

Spoiler: THEY STILL HAVNT MET UP AND THE STORY IS STILL ABSOLUTE sh*t AND JUST DRAGGING ON.

[collapse]

Don't read this. I mean if you don't care about romance than read this I goes but tbh its actually boring af and I don't understand how other people actually like this. <<less

I give this novel a 2-star rating. Only 2 stars.

Now, let me make something clear. If I had stopped reading at around chapter 800 or so, I would still have awarded 4 stars to this novel.

When I first started reading this novel several years ago, it was my all-time favorite. The dungeons were interesting. Come on, who doesn't like the idea of powering up via live-action games? The characters were interesting. I liked the idea of NPCs being real people. I liked the pet system and the shop and I... more>> was always looking forward to the MC earning more points. I wanted to see what items or what skills he would purchase next to level up. When they got the
Spoiler

base, which was like a mini version of Zero City, I was ecstatic for them.

[collapse]

This novel also has an international feel to it, which appeals to me greatly. The MC and his team traveled all over the world and encountered interesting cultures. If you check out the London arc, you can tell that the author did his research into real world English history.

Honest. Over the years, I've grown to love the characters in the novel. Chen Xiaolian of course. Qiao Qiao and Su Su. Lun Tai and Bei Tai. Qimu Xi, Xia Xiaolei, Roddy. Nicole and Tianlei. I even liked the side characters like Yu Jiajia and Han Bi etc.

HOWEVER, I think the author got lazy despite the long hiatus and went for the Cop Out Ending of all cop out endings. There were simply too many loose ends left at the end. Here I will go through the loose ends one by one. By the way, they are all spoilers. Some of them will give away the Ending. So be warned.

Loose End #1. The Countess of the Norman family

Spoiler

Here, I am going to talk about both her soul and the replacement Countess the Development Team made to fill the gap.

During the London Arc, the Countess, exclusive account of Miao Yan, was killed by Bai Qi. And Mr. San (also known as Ambler) took out her soul and placed it in the Sword in the Stone. He then gave Chen Xiaolian a mission. The latter was to find a replacement body for the Countess (also known as Xian Yin at that time).

Later, when Dawn (Chen or Shen), the leader of the Thorned Flower Guild invaded Zero City, the Sword broke and the Countess's soul was released. The last time I saw the Countess' soul was when Dawn was talking to Adam, the AI in Zero City. The author simply described her soul as looking distressed and frightened and then left it at that. After that scene, nothing more was said about the Countess's soul. Did she get a new body? What did Dawn do to her? Why didn't Mr. San (or Mr. Umbrella) ask about her soul when he saw Chen Xiaolian again?

No explanation was ever given.

And then, there is also the matter regarding the replacement for the Countess in the real world. During the London Arc, her tragic backstory was revealed to the readers. So, at that time, I could not help but pray for a happy resolution with regards to the Countess. But the last time she was seen in the novel, she was in the midst of a mental breakdown because her body was still being used by Miao Yan.

The only way to resolve this sh*t would be for Miao Yan to get a new exclusive account. And, somewhere during the last five chapters of the novel, Chen Xiaolian got his hands on an empty body used by the Development Team. That would have served as a more-than-adequate body for Miao Yan. But, alas, the author got tired and went for a Cop Out Ending. At the end, Miao Yan got totally cut off from Chen Xiaolian's world so there was little point to the empty body after all.

[collapse]

Loose End #2. Founding members of Blade Mountain Flame Sea Guild

Spoiler

After telling Chen Xiaolian to take care of his Guild, Bluesea died a permanent death. Nothing more needed to be said.

Skyblade was revived as an ordinary person and his son, the Fatty, went to look for him. The last time he appeared in the novel, he was just lying unconscious in Thunderflame's car. The author did not tell us what happened to him afterward. Did Thunderflame try to revive him with a metal orb? Nobody knows.

As for Qiao Yifeng, he went along with Thunderflame for his own protection. After that, the author did not tell us what happened to him and his daughter.

As for Thunderflame, when she last appeared in the novel, she still had her powers as an Awakened, but the author did not tell us if she ever returned to Zero City.

Around chapter 830, Chen Xiaolian was starting to rebuilt Zero City and trying to get all the Awakened to move in. But the author did not tell us if Thunderflame and the two other founding members of the guild went along with the plan.

So did Skyblade get revived as an Irregularity? Did Qiao Yifeng get revived? Nobody knows.

[collapse]

Loose End #3. Yu Jiajia

Spoiler

When Yu Jiajia first appeared in the novel, I thought that she was meant to play some important role later on. After all, she was related to three other important side characters. She was Qiao Yifeng's illegitimate daughter and Qiao Qiao's half sister. She was also one of the few people to show kindness to Da Gang (Tian Lie) and was kidnapped along with him.

Later on, after Qiao Qiao's death in the Jerusalem's dungeon, the world forgot about her and Jiajia became Qiao Yifeng's only daughter. And according to Jiajia's new memories, she was also Chen Xiaolian's girlfriend and Su Su's stepsister.

But of course, Chen Xiaolian harshly rejected her and, later on, her "loving" stepsister, Su Su, also tried to kill her.

When we last saw her, she went away with her father and Thunderflame. Nothing more was said about her afterward.

Which was a shame imo. I mean, she wasn't one of those shallow and materialistic girls. She was one of the few people who had shown kindness to Da Gang (Tian Lie) and was probably partially responsible for Tian Lie turning into a kinder and less mu*derous person. So I just can't accept that her fate was to live the rest of her life as a love-sick puppy.

I was looking forward to her growing stronger and becoming a power in her own right. She had the right people (Thunderflame, Skyblade and her father) with her after all.

[collapse]

Loose End #4. Phoenix & Han Bi

Spoiler

After receiving the metal orbs from Chen Xiaolian, she was supposed to go find her former team members and revive them. But after her departure from Zero City, nothing more was said about her. The novel ended abruptly before we could find out if she was successful in finding her team members.

Chen Xiaolian was also supposed to go find Han Bi, so that he could revive his brother. But the novel ended abruptly before that could happen. What sort of life had he been living since parting ways from Chen Xiaolian in the Romanian dungeon? Nobody knows.

[collapse]

Loose End #5. Yang Yi and Tina

Spoiler

Both were formerly residents of Zero City. During the merman dungeon in chapter 844, they made up their minds to return to Zero City. At that time, Yang Yi was so excited to find the survivors of the Blade Mountain Flame Sea Guild but, unfortunately, the novel ended before we could even see him returning to Zero City.

[collapse]

Loose End #6. Lin Leyan

Spoiler

The Taiwanese NGO worker Chen Xiaolian met in Africa. She fell in love with Chen Xiaolian but lost her memories after leaving the dungeon in Africa. Afterward, she made a reappearance in London and was picked up by Tian Lie and Nicole. At that time, when she saw Chen Xiaolian's photo, she started to remember seeing him.

Later on, Tian Lie and Nicole took her along to the dungeon in Romania where she was reunited with Chen Xiaolian. But afterward, she vanished abruptly from the narrative. Nothing was said about her life after the parting of ways in Romania.

[collapse]

Loose End #7 Takashimoto Shizuka

Spoiler

The Japanese air stewardess who survived the first dungeon with Chen Xiaolian and Su Su.

Although she was said to have lost her memories after the first dungeon, she made several reappearances in the novel. During those times, the author hinted that she was regaining memories of the time she had spent with Chen Xiaolian. By the way, she was the first woman Chen Xiaolian kissed in the novel. It wasn't Qiao Qiao, but Shizuka.

The last time she appeared in the novel was when she first started working for Dawn (Chen or Shen), the leader of the Thorned Flower Guild. Dawn himself said he was planning to use her to lure Chen Xiaolian over, so one would have thought that she had some important role to play later on. Plus, you know, the memories of Chen Xiaolian kept popping up in her mind.

But immediately afterward, Dawn invaded Zero City and nearly killed Chen Xiaolian. So what the heck point was there in giving a job to Shizuka?? Even after Dawn's disappearance and the dissolution of the Thorned Flower Guild, nothing was mentioned about her. She just vanished into thin air. So she only had the job as Dawn's PA for one freaking day? What the hell, man...

[collapse]

Loose End #8. Nagase Komi and the Japanese guild

Spoiler

She's the baldie Japanese girl who received a portion of Tian Lie's power. Nothing more was mentioned about her after the Kyoto dungeon arc. And it was not known whether Chen Xiaolian succeeded in inviting her and the Japanese guild to his Zero City.

[collapse]

Loose End #9. Miao Yan

Spoiler

Several chapters before the last chapter, the Development Team summoned ALL the players from the upper world, gave them the right to use the angelic bodies and ordered them to clear all the dungeons. They did all that because they wanted to refresh/renew the world where the Awakened lived.

By right, Miao Yan should have been summoned too but that was not mentioned. In fact, nothing was mentioned about her after she had parted ways with Chen Xiaolian in that secret mini-world. Nobody knows what she did with the secrets she had learned in that world or how those secrets affected her life in the players' Upper World.

[collapse]

Loose End #10. Qimu Dong

Spoiler

Qimu Xi had a brother, Qimu Dong. He was an Awakened but died in a dungeon.

Now, he's a mystery figure. Because being an Awakened, he ought to have been revived after his death. And since Qimu Xi knew about the secret of the metal orbs, reviving him would have been possible. But somehow, Qimu Xi never did that. Nor did she bring him over to the Meteor Rock Guild. Although it was said that the two had been really close before his death, Qimu Xi made no attempt at all to seek him out.

And bear in mind that the Qimu siblings were beggars and orphans in the real world. So after his "reset, " his new life as a non-Awakened should have been a terrible one. So why did Qimu Xi leave him alone?

I suspect that the author might have wanted to include him as an Irregularity but got too lazy to do so.

[collapse]

Loose End #11. Zhao Yun's kid from the Netherworld

Spoiler

The kid whom Zhao Yun was taking care of in the Netherworld (the world Awakened and Irregularities go to after their deaths). Zhao Yun was taking care of him because he looked like Liu Bei's son and she used to Liu Bei's subordinate. Anyway, during the Netherworld arc, he got sent back to the world of the living. And Chen Xiaolian arranged for him to go to school via Qiao Yifeng's connections.

He's an interesting character and more ought to be written about him. But after briefly mentioning that he would be attending school, nothing more was mentioned about him.

[collapse]

Loose End #12. That kid in the Jerusalem dungeon

Spoiler

He was a quest NPC in the Jerusalem dungeon. The MC and his party were supposed to retrieve him and then kill him. In the second stage of the dungeon, he was supposed to turn into a demon and then the players on the Side of Light were supposed to kill him. MC and his party automatically became players on the Side of Darkness after saving the kid.

Now, the thing is the MC's team actually had the option to choose from 3 or 4 available choices. They were all NPCs with the same name.

Later, after saving the kid, the MC went to visit one of the NPCs, an elderly man in the hospital. When the old man saw the MC, he appeared to recognize the latter and called out "guild leader" before dying.

And "guild leader" happened to be the form of address the kid NPC was using for the MC. Because everyone else was doing that, so the kid copied the adults. That's an interesting story right there.

But even after the Jerusalem arc ended, the author did not explain anything about the time slip that had happened in the dungeon.

[collapse]

And now, I will explain why the ending is the cop out ending of all cop out endings and why it is so damn freaking vile.

Spoiler

Guess what happened in the end? Well, the Development Team managed to get the Players to clear all the existing dungeons and that enabled them to go ahead with refreshing/renewing the world where the Awakened lived.

Even the MC's Zero City was not spared. The rest of the world was also getting deleted and refreshed. So, in the end, Dawn sacrificed himself and went up into the Upper World of the players to deal with the Development Team. And down here on Earth, Bai Qi stabbed the Source (Qi Dian), the energy source that was part of the world's source code and something that enabled them to build Zero City in the first place. And after stabbing the Source, Bai Qi himself got deleted and the refreshing of the world was reversed.

Time was reversed and then Chen Xiaolian woke up on the same plane that he had boarded back in the first chapter. Time was reversed but things did not go back to the way they were. For starters, because Bai Qi and Dawn had already cut off the connection between the Development Team and the world, it meant that Chen Xiaolian never had the chance to go into the first dungeon. It was as if dungeons had never existed in Xiaolian's world.

And so, he also did not have his powers anymore. Nor his system. Nor his pet war cat.

Because Xiaolian was protected by Dawn's power at the end, right up to the point when Bai Qi stabbed the Source, he retained his memories. But everyone else had already forgotten about all the awesome adventures that they had together. Qiao Qiao, Su Su, Roddy and the rest.

So the novel ended with Chen Xiaolian trying to woo back Qiao Qiao again. And that's that. The end.

And now let me tell you why this ending is so freaking vile. Because it negated all the hard work the MC and his team had put in! It made all their adventures redundant! And now, even his team members did not remember the times they had gone through together!

Throughout the story, characters like Xia Xiaolei, Nagase Komi and Qimu Xi had done their best to better themselves and to gain strength in order to stand up for themselves. Well, all their efforts had just been negated after the reset. Without dungeons and Awakened Ones, they would never get the chance to become stronger. Xia Xiaolei would still be a country bumpkin, Qimu Xi would still be a homeless orphan and Nagase Komi would still be a weakass delinquent girl.

And Tian Lie, one of the most powerful Awakened person in the game? He would still be Da Gang and probably end up crippled (or dead) after enduring severe bullying. At the very least, he would never have the chance to meet and fall in love with Nicole, since the real world Nicole was an American NSA agent and Da Gang was this malnutritioned school janitor in China.

It is sad to think that all the adventures Tian Lie had with Nicole had been for nothing...

Ah yeah. Finally, the loose end of all loose ends. What happened to Mr. San, Zhao Yun and the rest of the Old-time Irregularities? They were all from ancient times and if their world never had dungeons in the first place, then it was possible that all of them would have died in their own time. They would still have memories of their times as Irregularities, since they were protected until the very end, but they would have none of their original powers... So did they die in their own times? Or what?

I think that this novel is underrated, here's why:

*Characters have more depth than your average Xuanhuan or Xianxia.
*Plot is original, not your standard xianxia rehash
*Modern day is a plus because most novels here are historical or pure fantasy
*Villains aren't generic evil dudes. They all have their reasons and motivations to act like they do which are believable.
*Party/guild management - not many novels has this or not as well done as here.
*Superb translation

Now there are several problems with this novel. Here are some of them:

Spoiler

*Skill system is not that interesting
*Pet system is not great either
*The little girl could be written better, it's hard to like her at this point because she turns sociopathic whenever danger strikes.
*Some aspects require a serious suspension of disbelief like the girl's split personality.
*Novel lacks downtime, shit's happening all the time and it's difficult to binge read it.

But even with the problems it has the rating should be higher. <<less

Temporary stop at ch.80. (Current Tl'ed at 95). As raw is ongoing, the 80th of 450 chapters is almost nothing. Good plot with NEW idea, good dialogue, good fighting scene. Good Translation. No nonsense characters, No boring copied idea/copy (as in all those generic xianxia).

Worth reading (though I stop, waiting for more chapters).

In order to ensure your readers actually continue to read your novel, you have to have an attention gathering beginning. This novel only had what seemed to be a bad opening to a cheesy survival show with game elements. Also, the fourth wall breaks in conversations during this part only helped to disconnect the reader from the story.

The writing style of the author is that of injecting comedic elements into serious situations, which personally infuriates me. Using s*upid phrases like "**** your mother".

All of the above has left a very... more>> bad first impression of this novel on me.

I most likely will not come back to this novel either because I am not going to force myself to read the author's bad writing style just because some reviews say that "this novel is underrated" and "it gets better later on". <<less

Mmm.. It an refreshing story. Definitely the first one (for me) that bring an "anti transmigration" genre.

I haven't found any noticeable fault so far, so I give it 5 star. If you like to read story that has a 'game like' feeling, you should try this one.

update: there's one fault I found after 67chs. MC sometimes acts like veteran, cool, calm and smart, but sometimes he acts like a newbie.

Overly popular low-quality novel.

The plot has good potential but author isn't skillful enough to release it. Sometimes I've got the feeling that he himself doesn't know what he wants to write about.

At the start it was mostly about survival, later on the focus completely changed to the world building whereas survival element became a dull background.

It could be fine but there are too many plot holes and illogical matters for it to be enjoyable. Maybe author thinks that he is very clever and keeps the readers in suspense but sadly... more>> he is not.

At the beginning there was a clear power system divided by ranks from F to S. To power up you need to earn points and exchange them for attributes/skills/equipment. Strangely this system has been completely forgotten at some point in time.

All the fights later on are completely illogical. MC has low attributes, no skills from exchange, zero weapon mastery yet somehow he kills [A+] ranked experts with years of experience. Everything MC has was either given at the beginning by the system/given by others for free or picked by the road. Why even bother with this system then?

There are a lot of similar situations but I don't think I should describe more of them here.

Now let's talk about MC's development and "depths" of side characters.

Basically there is nothing at this department. At the start MC was portrayed as smart and kind-hearted fellow and he is still the same later on. Going around helping everyone he can help and saving everybody he can. It doesn't matter that it's a burden for him and his guild mates. Plot armor saves them all in critical moments. It's just that strong here.

For side characters there is nothing but drama here. Drama, drama and one more time drama. By the end of 570th chapter there are no happy characters. Not even 1. You will have to read how pitiful they all are. And you will have to do it a lot because there are tons of them here. All poor and pitiful. I guess some people call this character development but I can't agree with this, it's nothing but a low level backstory. And if the character isn't pitiful enough in the beginning don't worry the author will fix this soon.

Btw the more into the story the more screen time side characters have. But dont get me wrong, it's mostly always someone new. Author tends to add more and more of them for the sake of his clumsy world building which only makes the story more dull and add holes in the plot. Meanwhile all the side characters have no influence on the plot whatsoever. MC is the only one who decides how the story goes. The whole world spins around him. They all have this urge to help or listen to him no matter how great they are. Sometimes they help openly sometimes secretly. It's not like they owe him something. It's just because our MC is a good guy or his identity as irregularity.

You can try to read this novel for the sake of reading something but I would advise you not to. <<less

The rating for this novel is way too low. I just finished catching up to the novel and man it has been an awesome journey. The author really knows how to write his characters. This is without a doubt one of the top novels that has a really fleshed out side characters, superb flow of story, and amazing plot twists at every turn. This novel is like the combinations of Terror infinity, Arena, and matrix put into one novel. The author took all the good from all three and put... more>> it into one novel. Its amazing.

Don't get me wrong there are some parts which are really not very interesting or fun to read but the other 90% of the novel is superb. The story does get stale from time to time but I advise people to keep reading. The story as a whole is really worth every word you read.

Somethings which I found really hard to digest would be the power levels. Most of the power levels arent explained properly, the author often smudges the power levels. The power level goes from D>C>B>A>S. We never see anyone who is less then B+, most of the time we arent even told the power levels. Sometimes "A" level is strong other times our MC easily beats them. Most of the time we dont even know the power level of MC. Till the current chapter we arent even shown the power level of MC, we just have to assume how strong he is.

Overall my rating for this novel would be:

Story: 10/10

Character:10/10

Power levels: 6/10 (Its not explained properly how strong someone is, we just have to assume how strong they are most of the time)

Translator:10/10

Grammar:10/10

Non the less, I would advise everyone to try and read the novel. It has awesome characters and story. Its really worth a shot. <<less

This is something similar to both Matrix and Terror Infinity. While MC is weak and softhearted for now, he will get stronger and more ruthless with more experience (this is how it usually happens in such novels). Pacing is not fast but not unbearably slow either...I really like it and it s quit addictive.

it's an okay story so far. One thing it has in it's favor is that the characters feel a little bit more real than most of the other stories listed on NU. Thankfully, the needless ruthlessness, cruelty, and sexism that so permeates Xuanhuan web novels is absent for the most part. The bad: a lot of missing detail and description about the mechanics of the world. Nothing in depth at all. The system is barely explored, so far. The background history/mythology that the MC just happens to know is pretty... more>> unbelievable and a lot of it is badly explained, if it is at all. Bloody boring repetitions. Everything seems to be repeated. Sigh.

Overall, it's an okay read for what it is, one just has to remember it is a translated chinese web novel, and not to expect too much. <<less

Have you ever seen "The Matrix?"

In it, when Neo first met Morpheus, he was offered a choice of blue or red pill. Choose Blue, and he would end up back in bed, to believe what he'd choose to believe. Red, and he sees how deep the rabbit hole goes.

This novel starts out with a similar precept, except that our MC, named Chen Xiaolian, wasn't given a choice of pills. Instead, he tripped, stumbled and fell into the rabbit hole. It's difficult to explain the plot of the novel without spoiling... more>> it, so I will only tell you that this is a very clever and creative spin on the Simulation Theory. It does start out a little slow and a little confusing, but it soon turns into a good ride.

First, I cannot tell you how good this novel is. You have to read it for yourself! But, I can tell you some of the good things about it:

1). The MC really is a proxy for the reader. He's truly an 'everyman, ' in the beginning of the story. He doesn't have the benefit of 'having played this game before in his past life, ' or an old man's spirit living inside of his space ring, or a supercomputer system that helps him level up faster than anyone can imagine. The usual 'goldfinger' cheat system that most of the MC's of CN novels have, is not present in this novel. The MC's only advantage here is his job, which is an online novel writer, which gives him a more active imagination than most people, and enables him to think clearly, in crises.

2). Everything of and around him is at-risk. The MC can be hurt, and he can be killed. Same goes for his friends and allies. This isn't like a novel about some guy playing a video game, where the most risk he takes is he has to start from zero again, which for Chinese people apparently is worth committing su*cide over.

3). The MC makes free choices. In this novel, he thinks through problems, instead of plowing through it with OP disposition all the way. He makes choices. Freely. He's not following some pre-destined path like most other CN novel MC's, but rather deciding himself as he goes. Sometimes he makes the wrong choices. When he does, bad things happen, and people around him die. There is a sense of crisis, in which the plot armor only protects him so far, in this novel.

4). The element of figurative face-slapping as main plotline is absent. This most annoying element of most CN novels is decidedly absent here. The novel has an actual plot overarc, with mini-arcs along the way, and there's enough tension and danger, so there's no repetitive Chinese-style figurative face-slapping. In fact, the phrase "YOU'RE COURTING DEATH!" or something like it appears very, very infrequently.

5). Worldbuilding in this novel is very strong.

6). The plot moves. There's not much fillers between the stories.

7). MC does not have continuously miraculous luck. He doesn't power-up like most CN novel characters, where he finds good fortune whenever he turns his head. The good fortune he has happens infrequently, and they could as well have been claimed by other people, if not for his observational and thinking abilities.

8). The MC is not perfect. He has fears and worries. He's not some all-powerful xuanhuan character that can overturn mountains and drain oceans. In fact, the best thing about this novel is that the MC is not all that exceptional. When he wins, you'll get to see that he actually put in some effort. Nothing comes easy to him, and victory is always a result of strategic thinking and a courage under fire. And like real life, he doesn't always win.

Having said that, I also understand that this isn't the kind of novel that would appeal to everyone. I've noticed that this isn't a very highly-rated novel, on this site. Understandably so.

To fully appreciate this novel, you'll need to command a certain degree of intelligence and emotional maturity. If you are a 12-to-14-year-old boy, you'll think the novel is to slow and is too 'talkie.' This novel is more a dramatic adventure than an action piece. It's deep, introspective and sometimes philosophical. This is the anti-CN-novel of all the CN novels.

The MC's journey down the rabbit hole is not a freefall. He has to slow down at some point, and speed up at others. The mystery unfolds one layer at a time, and in fact, every 100 chapters or so, you'll discover that what you believe you know about the rabbit hole is wrong, and with another revelation you find that the hole is something else, entirely.

If you want something 'different, ' read the first 100 chapters of this novel in one sitting. If you like the first 100, the rest will blow your mind. If not, I recommend you read something called "Tranxending Vision, " since you'll likely find that novel life-changing.

Just a side note, but this has to be the crown jewel in the author's body of work. Most of his other novels are decidedly mediocre with a serious tilt towards utter crap. If you're trying to gauge the novel by who wrote it, don't. I assure you, this is very different than his other novels.

Enjoy! <<less

UNDER RATED NOVEL!

My God, this a good novel! Why it is not even placed in top 10?

Review:

... more>> SCORE: I will base my standards according to the ff. Light novels

10 - the novel's extra, rebirth of the malicious empress

1 - martial god asura, peerless martial god, etc.

Plot: 9/10 (NO REPETITIVE EVENTS SUCH AS TOURNAMENTS, although there's a cliche and plot holes, it is still a good read; MC is op but not that op; MC is calm and smart, not hot blooded barbarian like yun che-atg)

Romance: 6/10 (NO HAREM!!! dont worry girls have roles in here and not just a ona hole/stress reliever for the MC like cough... martial god asura, etc... cough)

...

Overall rating: 9/10

Still in doubt? Just read it and you'll see~ <<less

Reactions are unrealistic on so many levels.

Trust a guy who you just met with a dead body in his bathtub, but doubt the girl with crazy 6 senses after she tells you he is a bad guy, even though the girl constantly saves you!!
Spoiler

OR - Lines like "I'll do anything to save my little sister"... Or situations such as, you escape a magical fantasy world and then continuously try to run from an omnipresent being.

[collapse]

Coincidences are everywhere-
1. Blood just happens to fall on spherical metal balls activating powers on 3+ separate occasions with different people in the knick of time.
2. You run into a person you saved the previous day in a city the size LA... This seems to happen all the time.
3. Super powerful being takes over your body but you have just enough power to resist. The MC is smart one moment, but absolutely dumb the next. etc.

Lastly, something that I usually don't care enough to point out but there are too many plot holes galore. I can't even list them all. I'm all for just enjoying the ride, but this novel is a wooden raft on a stormy ocean. <<less

Fun once you get to the explanations of what the heck is happening. That takes a little while so I imagine a lot of readers will quit early on. I had to put it down and come back to it like 3 times before I finally managed to get to the explanations. Then I enjoyed it. Consistent translations, and since it's on WuxiaWorld, if it ever gets dropped one of their translators can pick it up like what happened with The Great Ruler.

Someone kindly recommended this to me and though I don't usually prefer a modern setting, I found myself rather enthralled by this novel and its unique premise. It's not perfect yeah, but I think it's interesting enough to keep me going, and most importantly, speculating.

It starts out kind of slow, admittedly, the first dungeon was a little boring... but that's because we don't really know what exactly is going on. We are kind of like the MC who is confused but trying his best to survive. Once we are... more>> told (through some info dumps, honestly) what on "earth" is going on (get it?!) it makes so much sense and it becomes very interesting. The world building steadily moves forward and opens up many possibilities.

Character wise... it's definitely diverse. I must say that I do not like the two female companions of our MC; the loli is especially creepy with that anti-social, yandere-like personality and her sister seems like a carbon copy of all useless female sidekick. The sister started off a little better but ended up a common trope. I must say however, that all the other male characters are quite well written. Each has a distinct flair and personality appropriate for their character making them seem more relatable. Our MC is the smart, almost a walking library type of guy who isn't afraid to use his fist. He is quite realistic in that while he does want to "free" his world, he is quite the pragmatist.

There are gaming elements, and more modern weapons, down to the sci-fi mechas but it doesn't overshadow the world that he lives in. While others might dislike the author's Gundam or LoL references, I think it instead solidifies the world that our MC lives in which is technically our world. If this was a fantasy series based in Imperial China, then yes, Garen or Jarvan from Demacia jokes would certainly be out of place.

The translation is done well, I have no noticeable complaints and it is consistent enough. The story is fresh and unique in its premise for me personally where the closest novels I could think of that has this admin vs the world or bug fixing would be Kumo Desu Ga and My Disciple Died Yet Again respectively. Worth a shot if you are looking for a good read! <<less

A surprisingly smart sci-fi action/adventure with some heavy fantasy & video game elements thrown in as a mash-up. There's a lot of speculation on the nature of consciousness and reality next to some pretty darn decent action scenes, with a wide variety of genre shifting going on as well.

More than anything else, though, it's a character drama, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. A lot of the xianxia and xuanhuan stories coming through the site focus very heavily on a single character that can and... more>> does do everything themselves, smashing everyone and everything in their way, et cetera et cetera. While this story does feature a strong main character, he's just the leader of a larger ensemble cast, a person with friends, rivals, enemies, and other people to interact with, fight, protect, be protected by, and all of it on a more personally meaningful level than is common in many xuanhuan stories.

Some people will be turned off by the weird genre mashupness of it all, and some people prefer stories about lone heroes to stories with so much focus on secondary characters, but I really do think that most people will find this story to be worth the effort. <<less
